Een simpel en erg vrolijk deuntje die ik sindsdien niet meer gehoord heb. Ik vind het nog steeds leuk ook door de baslijn.

11. Darts - Come Back My Love
Retrorock dat ook in de jaren '50 gebracht kon worden. Ik hou erg van deze ouderwetse en gezellige doowop, toen al in 1978 en nu nog steeds. Heel leuke stemmen en saxofoon.

16. Genesis - Follow You Follow Me
De eerste hit van Genesis, toen al met Phil Collins die een innemende en charmante zanger is. Erg sfeervol nummer en beter dan wat er nadien gaat volgen.

28. Richard Myhill - It Takes Two To Tango
Dit heb ik nog op single gehad geloof ik. Werd geen grote hit maar een degelijk en aanstekelijk nummer van ééndagsvlieg.

29. Marian Noble - Secret Love
Kende ik niet een cover van Doris Day (geloof ik) dat in een eigentijdse maar standaard disco vorm is gegoten.

30. Daniel Sahuleka - Long Distance Highway
Kende ik ook niet, werd blijkbaar in 1981 heruitgebracht. Toen verscheen er veel goede reggae maar dit nummer reken ik er niet bij met matige zang.

Als je er echt heel erg op gaat letten, blijven zaken bijzonder. Zoals vier nummers met 39 punten en drie met 34.
Patti Smith slaat deze week hard toe, in haar kielzog de smooth soul rock achtige Robert Palmer. Muzikale kameleon van beroep maar toch heel vaak geweldige songs van gemaakt. Niet echt punk maar ik kan mij herinneren dat zijn bewierrookte album Clues uit 1980 wel eens voor new wave werd versleten. Waarvan dan in ieder geval acte.

Een voorzichtige entree voor Paul McCartney en zijn band Wings. Inmiddels behoren zij tot de groten der aarde, voor de tweede keer voor Sir Paul en gaan de albums als de bekende warme broodjes over de toonbank. Ik zat mij opeens te bedenken, dat Wings een echte jaren '70 band is geweest. Onvervalst. Want vreemd genoeg, verscheen in 1979 nog Back to the egg en was het opeens met de band gedaan. Maar ten tijde van London Town wisten we dat allemaal nog niet.

Volgens mij zie ik ook een allereerste top 10 hit van Warren Zevon in onze lijst. En dan heb je natuurlijk een klassieker gemaakt!

Ik vond het toen wel aardig 'punky', Hey Lord don't ask me questions van Graham Parker & The Rumour. Het zal hem in de tekst hebben gezeten. Gewoon een sterke rocksong.

Ik heb wel ook het debuut van Chris Rea. Dat wil zeggen, Fool is overal de eerste single van Rea geweest alleen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk werd in 1974 het obscure So much love uitgebracht. Niet eens vergezeld van een album en nauwelijks als fatsoenlijke track te vinden. En dus mag van mij Fool als het debuut worden gezien.
De toon voor Chris Rea singles is daarmee gelijk gezet. Daarnaast zou Rea tot in lengte van jaren met singles bij ons blijven. En werd dus een grootheid, eerlijk is eerlijk.

In het alternatieve circuit zou dat gaan gelden voor Japan en hun frontman David Sylvian. Ik ben een groot liefhebber van beide. Als in ieder geval dit eerste Don't rain on my parade aan ons voorbij zou zijn gegaan. Een echte mispeer van jewelste van een band die blijkbaar nog behoorlijk zoekende is naar het kenmerkende, toonaangevende en alternatieve geluid van Japan. Om mee te beginnen. En ik denk dat David Sylvian 44 jaar na dato ook niet liever meer herinnerd wil worden aan dit debuut.

En ik schat 1 weekje in voor Boney M. Ja, het is uiteindelijk de nummer 3 van het jaar geworden. En ja, het was heel lang een hit in Nederland totdat je er eng van werd. En ja, Boney M heeft leukere platen gemaakt. Maar goed, het uitbrengen van de song kan voor nu even als excuus worden gebruikt voor een notering.

En dan vind ik persoonlijk dat Elton John met Ego weer eens een aardig single heeft gemaakt. 1977 was al niet het jaar van Elton. Maar dit Ego is weer eens een goede poging mee te doen aan de hitlijsten.

Een totaal vergeten band, doet mij een beetje denken aan Queen en klinkt nu wat gedateerd door de productie maar in zijn geheel een redelijke song.

"It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing" zingt Chic en ze voegen de daad bij het woord, want Everybody Dance swingt langs alle kanten de pan uit. De zang, de piano, de briljante gitaarlijntjes, het waanzinnige baswerk, de handclaps, het klopt allemaal. Zeker in de 12" versie is het ronduit genieten.

Wat ik wel aardig vind aan dit topic is dat ik voor het eerst met aandacht naar oude pophits luister en ze als het ware zelf ontdek, al heb ik ze vroeger regelmatig gehoord. Every Kinda People heb ik als kind wel meegekregen, in de jaren '80/'90 kwam dit nog regelmatig op de radio. Maar toen ik hem een paar weken terug weer hoorde vond ik het toch een wat suf deuntje eerlijk. Inmiddels moet ik daar op terugkomen, want dit is toch wel een heerlijke oorwurm. Opvallend vind ik de steeldrums, waardoor het nummer een wat Caribische sfeer heeft. Sowieso is de instrumentatie rijk, want ik hoor ook strijkers en blazers. En dan heb ik de fijne stem van Palmer nog niet eens benoemd. Mooi om nu te ontdekken wat mensen hier destijds en al jaren in hoorden.

Aerosmith draait al een poosje mee in mijn tiplijst en haalt nu eindelijk de top 20. Onderhand vind ik Kings and Queens wel het beste Aerosmith-nummer dat ik ken (beter dan Dream On en Janie's Got A Gun), wat een geweldige opbouw en dramatiek zit hierin.

Dan ga ik hem ook maar meenemen. Origineel in 1977 uitgebracht door James Last en in de singleversie met Zamfir in de Top 40 binnengekomen volgens mij in 1979. Vind het een prachtnummer. Maar een heel abum vol panfluit...overdaad schaadt. Maar dit is een prima lengte voor zo'n nummer.

musician, dit is de weeklijst van deze week (die mag je aanhouden).

Opvallend veel covers van hits uit het pre-1965 tijdperk. Oh heideroosje was in 1954 een enorme hit in Nederland. Die ligt mij ook niet, vooral door de matige tekst.

Qua compositie verdient de Tiroler Holzhacker Bub'n van mij een 8. De uitvoering van Boemerang vind ik net wat te frivool maar een 5 krijgt die wel van mij.

Bij deze compositie weet ik nog dat ik in 1978 naar de bibliotheek ging om de componist Wagner op te zoeken. Het zal toch niet Richard zijn, dacht ik nog. Er stonden enorme rijen met tientallen delen van encyclopedieën in de kast: The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians en Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Van dat mooie dikke papier waar ze wel een aardig boompje voor om hebben gehakt.
Na lang zoeken kwam ik erachter dat het niet Richard maar zijn Oostenrijkse naamgenoot Josef Franz bleek te zijn. Er stond slechts 1 regeltje over deze Tiroler Holzhacker Bub'n en drie regeltjes over de componist die rond 1900 enorm populair moet zijn geweest in Oostenrijk.

Ik hoopte dat ik later ooit nog eens in een nog grotere encyclopedie mocht kijken voor nog meer informatie over deze compositie.

Klopt, origineel heet het dan nog in 1977 Einsamer Hirte.
Het lukte mij een paar weken geleden om Kill Bill 1 uit te kijken op de TV. Inclusief aftiteling. En toen dacht ik, na een overdaad aan bloed en wraak, lekker nummertje.

Ik heb deze helemaal over het hoofd gezien bij jou als nieuwe binnenkomer. Maar wat een fijne track van John. Wist niet dat hij die ook in de 70s al had. Ga me nu toch maar eens meer in zijn werk verdiepen.
