Ik hoorde Hold the line vandaag toevallig nog. Een nummer dat door dit topic voor mij absoluut meerwaarde heeft gekregen. En mooi dat Promises een verdiende nummer 1 in de gezamenlijke lijst heeft behaald!

Laat ik dan maar eens mijn top 100 over het afgelopen jaar posten. De nummers die schuingedrukt staan, staan nog genoteerd.

Uiteraard veel ontdekkingen gedaan, uit mijn top 20 waren mijn nummer 6, 13 en 19 volstrekt nieuwe ontdekkingen. Veel andere nummers kende ik wel, maar presteerden veel beter dan ik op voorhand had verwacht. Sylvester zelfs op de 1e plek. Nu houd ik wel van allerlei disco, maar dit nummer was me nooit enorm positie opgevallen tot dit jaar. Ook Oh Daddy van Fleetwood Mac scoorde veel hoger dan verwacht, alleen op Rumours heb (had?) ik al 4 nummers die ik liever hoor. En in het jaar van Grease bleek het titelnummer voor mij veruit het beste nummer van die film.

Dit jaar geen artiest die er bovenuit springt. Wel was het het jaar dat punk langzaam overging in new wave en post-punk. Joy Division, Siouxsie, Public Image Ltd. en The Cure zijn zomaar wat nieuwe namen. Ook was er disco: Supercharge bleek een waanzinnige ontdekking en ook grote namen Giorgio Moroder en Chic lieten van zich horen.

Zoekend naar andere talen dan Engels verslaat de Italiaanse Patty Pravo met een fraaie 13e plek o.a. Brusselaar Jacques Brel (28, Orly) en Berlinette Nina Hagen (29, TV Glotzer). Que Tal America is Spaans, maar Two Man Sound zijn toch echt drie (!) Belgische heren. Heel wat verder weg stond de wieg van Faramarz Aslani (53, Age Ye Rooz), namelijk in Teheran. Op de valreep komen we dan toch nog een Nederlander tegen, want Ramses Shaffy (86, Laat Me) heeft de eer het enige Nederlandstalige nummer in de top 100 te scoren. Dat hij werd geboren in Parijs zien we dan maar even door de vingers.

Ik ben benieuwd wat 1979 gaat brengen!

Met als duidelijke A-kant The Unconventional en als B-kant Adolescent Sex.
De Engelsen hebben Adolescent sex nooit als A-kant gehad.

Adolescent sex werd in november wel uitgebracht in Duitsland. Toen volgde er geen notering in onze lijsten, behalve in die van mij (nu nog steeds).

Ik heb geen idee wie waarom van mening is dat er sprake is (geweest) van een dubbele A-kant. Ik heb vanaf het begin aangegeven dat het alleen kon gaan om The Unconventional, als A-kant dus uitgegeven in het VK.
Heb je nu het idee dat Adolescent sex je grote hit in de lijst was of The Unconventional?

Het lijkt, ook nu, er op dat je een dubbele A-kant in de eindlijst hebt genoteerd maar dat idee is echt nergens op gebaseerd. En het zou jammer zijn als je vanwege dat idee daarom nu Adolescent sex als hit zou missen.

Maar het origineel is schitterend. Misschien wel het beste Stones nummer van de laatste 45 jaar.

Het ging mij hier wel om Adolescent Sex. Als ik een b-kant beter vind dan de a-kant dan vermeld ik die er altijd bij. De a-kant hier vind ik een stuk minder interessant en had mijn lijst op eigen kracht niet gehaald.

Ik weet niet waarom er niet even kon worden gewacht op het verschijnen van Adolescent Sex voor de gezamenlijke lijst.
Alle punten zijn naar The Unconventional gegaan en Adolescent sex presteert nu helemaal niks. Terecht stel je dat The Unconventional je lijst niet zou hebben gehaald (die van mij ook niet).

Nu werd het een hele grote hit.

Zeker als je weet dat de A-kant nog als single moet verschijnen lijkt mij een paar weken of desnoods wat maanden geduld in de regel toch wel tot de mogelijkheden behoren! Een favoriete B-kant leidt in onze gezamenlijke lijst nooit tot een notering, hoe goed ook.

Klopt, maar dat moet je dan ook maar net weten. Bij Japan had ik dat niet zo paraat. Maar alsnog zou ik dan nog niet hebben gewacht. Ik probeer mijn lijst te maken op basis van de 'kennis van toen', met singles die ik toen had kunnen kennen via charts en radio. Dus dan heb je geen idee dat een b-kant een jaar later alsnog een a-kant wordt.

Een heel enkele keer wijk ik hier wel van af wanneer een artiest meerdere singles tegelijk uitbrengt en ik ze wat meer wil spreiden. Blondie is zo'n geval, met Heart of Glass wacht ik nu even omdat er al 3 of 4 Blondie-nummers in mijn lijst staan, terwijl het in Frankrijk al een hit is.

En zo wordt het een heel dansbaar weekje, met Bohannon, Donna Summer en de Three Degrees. Ze kwamen zomaar boven drijven.

Dat met die Three Degrees heeft nog een apart verhaal. De Nederlandse versie van Giving up, giving in had op de b-kant nogmaals Giving up Giving in staan maar dan de langere versie. De Duitse single had Falling in love again als b-kant maar de Amerikaanse versie had Woman in love als b-kant.

Ik heb dat singletje, ik kocht het destijds toen het nog in de top 40 stond bij V&D. Vraag me niet hoe we aan die Amerikaanse versie kwamen. Feit was wel, dat de liefhebbers plotseling een tweede A-kant kregen toen Woman in love dus in Engeland als single en opvolger van Giving up giving in werd uitgebracht. (Amerikanen hebben altijd van dat rare vinyl, je denkt altijd dat het kan breken in tegenstelling tot Europees vinyl).

Zowel in Duitsland kregen we The Runner en niet Woman in Love. Maar de Duitsers hadden dan weer wel Woman in love als b-kant van The Runner. Voor wie het nog kan volgen. In Nederland hadden we Falling in love again als de flipside van The Runner.
En zo werd er door platenmaatschappij Ariola heel wat afgerommeld. Waarom, is dan natuurlijk altijd de vraag.

Voor de liefhebbers van de Three Degrees een mooie tijd, alles kan naar keuze in de eigen lijst worden geplaatst.

Mijn op punten gebaseerde top 100 van het jaar 1978!
Het blijft, met dat opnieuw maken van de lijst, elke week toch weer een mengeling van jeugdsentiment, opgeteld bij wat je in de loop van de jaren na 1978 over dat jaar hebt opgepikt en wat er dit jaar aan nog onbekend werk is bijgekomen. Meer compleet kun je haast niet zijn.

Het is niet echt te zeggen wie de winnaar van het jaar is geworden. Het is natuurlijk de opkomst gebleken van The Police. Een band waar we in Nederland in 1978 nog nooit van hadden gehoord, dat moest duren tot 1979.
Robert Palmer had veel succes met singles van zijn album Double Fun. Ian Dury, Blondie, er was het debuut van The Cure. Maar ook "oudjes" als Styx en Genesis konden van sterke albums fraaie nummers halen.

Sterk jaar. Kijken of 1979 dat kan benaderen!

Eerst maar even het jaar afronden met lijst 52. Deze week had ik meerdere dagen het gevoel dat we de restjes van de kerst aan het opeten waren. Niks mis mee, maar heel spannend werd het niet. Dat geldt ook voor deze lijst. Restjes, nummers die al weken (of zelfs maanden) op mijn playlist staan maar het steeds net niet halen. Nu dan even wel. Behalve Rush, maar daar gaat dan weer van alles "mis" mee. Het nummer wordt in verschillende landen met afwisselende A- en B-kant uitgebracht. Ook hier weer veel verschillende release data. In Nederland komt het nummer pas in de zomer uit met (terecht) The Trees als A-kant. Het bijbehorende album, en Rush is vooral een album band, is van oktober 1978. In Nederland wordt de single waarschijnlijk uitgebracht met het oog op PinkPop waar ze optraden. Dit optreden is terug te vinden op de 40th Anniversary Edition uit 2018 van het album Hemphisphere. Ze speelde wel The Trees maar niet Circumstances die dag.

Overigens had PinkPop in 1979 een mooie dwarsdoorsnede van onze lijstjes op de poster staan: Dire Straits; The Police; Elvis Costello; Rush en Peter Tosh. Dat jaar werd PinkPop gepresenteerd door John Peel. Zijn lijstjes hebben via herman ook hier voor de nodige aanvoer gezorgd. Overigens vind ik You And Your Sister van Chris Bell ook veel beter dan A-kant I Am The Cosmos.
Die haalde mijn lijst wel dus ik ga deze niet opnieuw opnemen maar als ik dat van de B-kant had geweten had de single zeker mijn Top10 gehaald.

Ik heb geen weeklijst 52 (ik was al met het uitrekenen van hierboven begonnen na week 51)


De eindlijst met een (voor mezelf) niet verwachte nummer 1, en dan te bedenken dat ik FM niet eens kende voor dit jaar!!!
Het was een mooie start met hier instappen, omdat het puurder voelt dan bij 1997 (daar kun je nu meer de diepte in gaan omdat je het heel bewust hebt meegemaakt), hier was het echt ontdekken en leren, uiteraard zijn er veel nummers geweest die ik wel kende, maar er moest toch meer tijd in gestoken worden.
Verdere opvallende dingen in het kort: blijkbaar ligt Robert Palmer mij heel goed, er waren toch flink wat punky tracks die mij goed zijn bevallen net zoals wat (prog) rock waar ik niet van had verwacht dat het zou aanslaan en juist Blondie/The Police/Grease gingen veel aan mij voorbij (die eerste meer door de betreffende singles want Blondie is verder niks mis mee) en Queen hoeft bij mij ook niets te verwachten.
En er was een handvol electronische nummers die mij verrast heeft (Supermax en Cerrone bijvoorbeeld)
En nog verbaast dat Runnin' with the devil uit 1978 komt, ik had echt 1983/1984 verwacht.

Ik wens iedereen een fijne jaarwisseling en tot 1979.

Allemaal alvast een toffe en fijne jaarwissel en een muzikaal en gezond 2023 gewenst.

Deze hebben jullie bij mij gemist omdat Peter al in november 1976 naar Rio ging. Maar ik ontbrak sowieso toen in dit topic.
Het nummer werd op 12-12-1976 in Nederland uitgebracht. Dat had beter 11-11-1976 kunnen zijn geweest. Ik vind het namelijk één van de betere carnavalsnummers.
Het is zeker geen misser om deze in 1978 te plaatsen want het werd op 12-12-1977 opnieuw in Nederland uitgebracht onder een ander labelnummer. En toen werd het pas een hit tijdens het carnaval van 1978.

Hansje Ravesteijn was voor mij in 1978 niet te missen. Haar verschijning zal daar zeker aan hebben bijgedragen. Ze kreeg voor mijn gevoel aardig wat publiciteit met haar schijnbaar naar de Sex Pistols refererende plaat op tv, radio en in tijdschriften.

Ik miste inderdaad de titel van het tijdschrift. Dat blad is onmisbaar om diverse muziek van de 20e eeuw te analyseren. Zeker ook voor de jaren 60 en 70 een aanrader.

De mooiste titel van vorige week was voor mij “Lick a Smurp For Christmas”. Maar die moet de top 20 bij Justus nog halen en dat zal niet eenvoudig worden want kerst is al weer voorbij.
Ik zie bij Justus allerlei fantasiefiguren die al dan door een waterkraan kunnen of gelikt worden. Smurfen, smurpen, etc. Maar ik mis tot nog toe bij Justus deze klassieker: Om misverstanden te voorkomen. Een misser hoeft bij mij geen flater te zijn. Ik bedoel hier onder missers datgene wat ik gemist heb.

Ik heb bij 50tracks de door mij zeer gerespecteerde analyse van 1978-nummers van de top 2000 gemist. Ik wil hem natuurlijk niet nodeloos aan het werk zetten en bovendien is die top 2000 van dit jaar al nagenoeg voorbij. Maar als hij het niet van plan is / was dan plaats ik ze alsnog.

Ik heb de neiging niks te willen missen. Dus beoordeel ik de volledige single. A en B-kant. En soms ga ik naar exotische oorden om een single virtueel mee te nemen. In het verleden ging ik vaak naar de Filipijnen omdat ze daar singles uitbrachten die ik in andere landen mistte. Het werden grote hits in mijn de top 40's van begin 70-er jaren: Across The Universe (klik), Sea Of Madness (klik), Stairway To Heaven (klik)..

Ik miste ze veelal bij de andere deelnemers, dat kan aan de afstand gelegen hebben of aan het gebrek aan single-gevoel of aan verschil van smaak of aan de B-kantjes. Zelf had ik ook nog de Filipijnse release van 1973 hier gemist van Love Lies Bleeding (klik) (die werd pas in 1978 in andere landen op EP uitgebracht). Dat was wel een beetje flater van mij.

Nu komt aan het eind van dit jaar een echte Filipijnse artiest bij mij als hoogste binnen. Een mooi nummer over een gemiste zoon die thuiskomt bij zijn vader nadat hij jarenlang in zonde heeft geleefd. How you gonna see me now is de vraag die de zoon stelt maar dan in het Tagalog. Ik heb het Engelstalige equivalent in mijn lijst alsnog als laagste binnenkomer opgenomen. Ik geef toe dat het voor mij nog een restje uit mijn speellijst was.

Anak (betekent kind) draaien ze veel bij mijn favoriete Chinese afhaalrestaurant. Het nummer komt op mijn lijst overeen met mijn favoriete gerecht: nasi goring met garnalen: nr. 26. Ik eet vanavond het restje op wat ik gisteren heb meegenomen.
Eigenlijk dateert Anak al van juli 1978 want toen werd die op de Filipijnen al uitgebracht. Nummer 29, mijn één na hoogste past eigenlijk beter bij Pinksteren maar ik ga hier geen half jaar mee wachten. Deze staat nu al in de diverse kerstlijstjes. Voor mij is dit geen restje. Net als Pointed Sticks, Sister Sledge, X-Ray specs en Nick Lowe.

Bruce komt ook weer binnen zodat ik bijna geen enkele track van het album Darkness at the edge of town hoef te missen.
Tenslotte nummer 38. Een single met exact dezelfde A- als B-kant. Geen promo of bug maar twee keer lady bug. Zo mis je zeker niks.

Een mooie jaarwisseling toegewenst en voorzichtig met vuurwerk. Ik wil niemand missen volgend jaar.

Hoewel ik het bij de Nederlandstalige liedjes regelmatig oneens ben met LucM, slaat hij hier de spijker op zijn kop.

Mijn top 40 bestaat uit volledige singles. Mijn jaar top 100 bestaat traditiegetrouw in tegenstelling tot mijn top 40 uit tracks, dus A- en B-kanten.
Verder is deze, eveneens conform traditie, sinds 1966 aangevuld met LP-tracks (A) die veel later of nooit single worden.

Het is mijn zevende top 100 op musicmeter op deze wijze.

Eindelijk staat er in al die jaren voor het eerst een vrouw op nummer 1. Dezelfde als bij LucM en Ranboy. Maar het blijft behelpen met zangeressen bij mij. In de top 60 slechts three times a lady. Die vinden we ook op nr. 70.

Wat verder opvalt is dat er heel weinig LP tracks in de top 100 van 1978 staan. Three times an album track (op 52, 66 en 91). Dat betekent dat 1978 het beste singlejaar is van de hele serie.
Nadeel is wel dat de lijst van 1978 hierdoor wat korter is dan andere jaren. Daarom heb ik de lijst deze keer aangevuld tot en met een top 120 zodat blijkt dat er net nog 4 andere album tracks buiten de 100 vielen.

Alle 7 tot nog toe beoordeelde jaren waren fantastisch. Er zat geen minder jaar tussen. 1978 deed niet onder voor de door mij zo bewonderde sixties.

In de top 2000 van dit jaar staan 50 nummers die volgens de Top 2000 uit 1978 komen. Overigens ga ik daarbij uit van de datering die de TOP 2000 toekent. Soms loopt dat niet helemaal parallel met onze datering. Deze komen allemaal ook in ten minste 1 van onze lijstjes voor (denk ik). Twee keer heeft dat nog niet plaatsgevonden, maar ik durf wel te voorspellen dat Doobie Brothers en Billy Joel bij ons ook wel ergens voorbij gaan komen.

Vijf keer kwam het nummer bij ons in 1977 al voorbij. Ook ijf keer krijgt een nummer dat bij ons in 1978 al voorbij kwam 1979 als jaar.

In totaal hebben er sinds de eerste Top 2000 in 1999 133 verschillende nummers uit 1978 in de Top 2000 gestaan (volgens datering van Top 2000). Exact evenveel als uit 1977. Uit 1979 zijn er 130 noteringen geweest en daarna zakt het hard naar 107 voor 1980 en slechts 88 voor 1981. Mindere jaren?
