Ik heb dezelfde top 4 in iets andere volgorde (Rubber soul staat bij mij op dit moment ook nr. 4 en Abbey Road nr. 2).

White Album bij mij op 1, soms ook Revolver. Daarna Rubber, Abbey en Pepper.

Ik heb een zwak voor A Hard Day's Night. Een half uur knallen met het ene liedje nog beter dan het andere. Maar uiteindelijk bij mij ook Abbey Road op 1 denk ik. White Album niet op 1, maar wel de meest interessante/intrigerende.

Een - relatief - agressieve Cat Stevens maar naast de titel en tekst vallen ook de originele arrangementen op.

Heerlijke bluesy single van Jimi Hendrix, energiek en agressief met een inventief gitaarspel die zelden geëvenaard is.

Niet zin bekendste nummer - het zal met de titel te maken hebben en ook niet zijn beste, neigt teveel naar Engelbert Humperdinck maar Tom klinkt oprechter en niet zo stroperig.

35. Ro-D-Ys - Take Her Home
Garagerocknummer van Nederlandse bodem waarbij de tempowisselingen opvallen. Leuk het nog eens te horen.

Nieuw op 4. Mijn lievelings nummer van The Kinks. De zoete sfeer geeft je een gevoel van melancholie en maakt dit liedje briljant in al zijn eenvoud.
'Groovin' haalde bij mij niet eens de eerste plaats. 'Waterloo Sunset' en volgende week 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' moeten ook nog maar zien of zij de eerste plaats halen. De één na de andere voor mij 'alltime favourites' werd in deze periode uitgebracht. Het is vaak gezegd, maar ook wat mij betreft is 1967 inderdaad het beste singles jaar aller tijden.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience met 'The Wind Cries Mary' is nog zo'n nummer dat met gemak de eerste plaats had kunnen halen als het in een andere periode was uitgebracht.
Dit is één van zijn beste. Alles klopt, zijn gitaarspel is zoals altijd prachtig en zijn stem ook.

Ik kan niet zeggen welke ik beter vind; 'Then I Kissed Her' van The Beach Boys of 'de originele versie 'Then He Kissed Me' van The Chrystels. Ze zijn allebei geweldig dus daarom hoog binnen op 20.

Over Frankie Valli en zijn band The Four Seasons zijn de meningen verdeeld. Ook ik worstel soms met hun hitsingles. Ze gaan van soms over de top gaande falsettogeluiden in de vroege jaren zestig naar
zeer genietbare samenzang in de tweede helft van de jaren zestig. 'Beggin' en 'C'Mon Marianne' zijn daar voorbeelden van.
Franki Valli solo was overigens met 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' meteen top of the bill dankzij de ijzersterke compositie van Four Seasons bandlid Bob Gaudio en eind jaren zeventig had hij dankzij The Bee Gees weer succes met 'Grease'. En alsof 20 jaar roem niet genoeg was groeide vanaf 2005 de belangstelling voor hem en zijn Four Seasons opnieuw uit tot een wereldpodium dankzij de zeer geslaagde musical 'Jersey Boys'.
Het zondagskind Franki Valli, de niet eens zo heel talentvolle zanger met die alleraardigste stem heeft het heel ver geschopt.

Ook al zijn het niet eens de beste nummers van het Bob Dylan album 'Blonde on Blonde', de tracks van deze EP van zijn zo sterk dat het met gemak mijn top 40 haalt. De grote Bob Dylan mag je gewoonweg niet negeren.

Leuk, een re-entry.
In de top 40 gebeurde dat ook met bepaalde singles. Zoals de reeds voor volgende week aangekondigde "A whiter shade of pale" (1967-72).

Andere beroemde sixties re-entries zijn:
"How can we hang on to a dream". (1967-1987)
"You've got your troubles". (1965-1974)
"La danse de Zorba" (1965-1974)
En er volgen er de komende tijd nog veel meer.

Er zitten, hoewel ze enorm verschillen, ook een paar merkwaardige overeenkomsten tussen Larry Williams en Els Molenaar. Allebei rebels in hun muziek, allebei erg onderschat in 1967 (mede omdat ze vanwege het rebelse onvoldoende gedraaid werden op de radio) en allebei veel te vroeg als veertigers overleden. Ook Watson overleed veel te jong overigens.
Larry en Watson gaan bij mij met de single rond 20 mei nog binnenkomen in mijn top 40.
Fantastische single en ook een fantastisch album (Larry Williams & Johnny Watson - Two for the Price of One). Zou hier de uitdrukking onbekend maakt onbemind gelden?
Of Els Molenaar mijn top 40 gaat halen weet ik niet, de concurrentie is moordend, maar ze zal zeker mijn Nederlandstalige top 20 over 1967 gaan halen.

En ik vind de single van Els van internationale allure.
Enerzijds moet ik aan België denken waar 50 jaar geleden het rijbewijs werd ingevoerd. Je kon er in 1967 examen doen maar dat maakte niet uit want het Belgische rijbewijs kreeg je toch wel als je minstens 21 jaar was:
Gezakt of geslaagd. Het kan me niks meer bommen. Zonder dat papiertje kan ik toch wel overal kommen. Gezakt of geslaagd. Ik zit er niet meer mee. Werken voor dat papiertje, ik kom toch van A naar B.
Ja, zo zit er ongeveer net zoveel tijd tussen de invoering van het Nederlandse rijbewijs in de jaren 20 en de invoering bij de Zuiderburen als tussen de beoordelingen van LucM en de top 40 van 1967. Overigens weet ik nog dat mijn ouders vroeger Belgie probeerden te mijden want het was er veel te verkeersgevaarlijk en het zou je zo dichter bij God kunnen brengen.

Maar het gaat mij (anderzijds) om deze Duitse singleliefhebber (klik) die een lofzang op Els Molenaar geeft met diverse details over deze single (vooral over de cover van deze single).
"Els, where are you today?" vraagt hij zich af. Mij valt ook op dat Els op de singlehoes een sigaret tussen de vingers heeft en ik weet dat ze in 1994 aan longkanker is overleden.

En dan is het des te opmerkelijker dat deze Duitse blogger ook met een opmerkelijk vroeg sixties anti-rook singletje komt.
Ook geen slecht plaatje trouwens maar ik moet nog wel 2 jaar wachten voordat deze krautrock (Heart of Blues - Smoking takes you faster to God) de lijstjes in kan. Het enige wat mij niet zo bevalt aan deze single is de stem van de zanger. Daar ontbreekt wat aan, een rauwig randje.

Als ik mijn muziektijdschriften van vroeger doorlees dan is het opmerkelijk hoeveel rookreclame er in stond. Tegenwoordig verboden materiaal maar ik vraag mij ook af hoe mijn artiesten hadden geklonken als ze helemaal nooit gerookt hadden. Van Morrison (mijn huidige nr. 10), Bob Dylan (mijn nr. 15) en vooral ook Aretha (mijn nr. 1). Ik moet er eigenlijk niet aan denken.
En toch zijn ze minder dicht bij God dan Els.

Op nr. 39 heb ik een unguilty pleasure van Serge Gainsbourg. Op nr. 48 staat deze week trouwens L'Idole (je n'en peux plus) van Jacques Dutronc . Ook de moeite waard.

Eindelijk komt deze binnen op nr. 30 en deze doet het vooral bij herman goed. Wat vindt herman van deze?: dat is mijn huidige nr. 46.

The Kinks: niemand kan om Waterloo Sunset heen denk ik. Prachtig nummer, ik denk zelfs wel hun signature song, al is het zeker niet mijn favoriet van de band (wel een geliefd nummer). Bijna een jaar geleden organiseerde ik op een ander deel van dit forum 'The Greatest Hits of The Kinks' en daar won Waterloo Sunset met overmacht (top 20 vanaf hier te lezen. Ik verwacht hem in onze weeklijst ook wel snel bovenaan te zien.

The Bee Gees is niet zeker geen favoriete band me, al hebben ze wel een handvol nummers die ik leuk vind. Dit nummer voegt zich daarbij. Mooie tekst, mooi dramatisch liedje. Stukken beter dan het vreselijke Spicks and Spens van een paar maanden terug.

The Elois' By My Side is de b-kant van I'm A Man (idd. een cover van), maar neem ik toch op (de Billboard doet immers ook aan b-sides). Echt een fantastische energieke proto-punk uit Australië.

The Beaux Jens brachten enkel deze single uit, daarna was de koek alweer op. Niet echt een bekend nummer met 10.000 YouTube-views en voornamelijk familieleden van de band in de commentaren, maar ik vind het er niet minder om. Lekker bluesy garagerock nummer met een prominente rol voor het orgel.

Met The Who heb ik nooit veel gehad, maar Pictures of Lily is wel een leuk nummer. Maar over de balk genomen blijft mijn liefde voor deze band toch ver achter bij de gemiddelde consensus, het is voor mij lang geen Stones/Beatles/Kinks/Byrds/VU/Doors, etc.

Phyllis Dillon komt met een typische rocksteady-plaat. Desalniettemin weet dit nummer toch op te vallen in de meestal wat eenvormige releases in dit genre. Waarschijnlijk door haar stem en de smachtende tekst.

Die van Dutronc had ik al in het vizier, maar die van Gainsbourg nog niet. Toch een beetje een lastige discografie met al die soundtracks en samenwerkingen in deze jaren. Klinkt ook goed.


Leuk nummer dat wel ontspannen aanvoelt, fijne groove. Die gaat de komende weken nog wel wat meer gedraaid worden, zou bij mij toch hoger dan 46 moeten kunnen halen over een paar weken.

Wel nee joh. Ik was straal vergeten dat deze single al in 1965 was uitgebracht. Volgende week verdwijnt hij weer, want twee keer in mijn lijst vind ik nergens op slaan.

Met Mr. Pleasant hebben we een nieuwe nummer 1, maar voor hoe lang? De concurrentie is aantocht met twee enorme klassiekers voorop. Verder valt op dat Pink Floyd bij iedereen flink daalt en daardoor vanaf plek 3 buiten de lijst valt.

Aretha Franklin timmert dit jaar flink aan de weg. Respect is de tweede single van haar doorbraakalbum I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You en een van de hoogst aangeschreven songs van dit jaar. Hoewel het al in 1965 werd geschreven en uitgebracht door Otis Redding, is de versie van Aretha de definitieve en haar signature song. Het staat ook op 5 in de beroemde Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time van Rolling Stone magazine.

Waterloo Sunset van The Kinks doet met een 42ste plaats op die lijst daar nauwelijks voor onder. Waarschijnlijk ook hun signature song en in ieder geval een buitengewoon mooi liedje.

Het gezegde 'The First Cut is the Deepest' kende ik eerder dan het liedje. P.P. Arnold is een Amerikaanse zangeres die deel uitmaakte van de Ikettes, de dames die Ike & Tina Turner vocaal ondersteunden. In 1966 bleef zij hangen in Engeland, waar het goed beviel. Dit is haar eerste (en grootste) solohit, later dit jaar duikt ze nog op bij de Small Faces' Itchycoo Park en Tin Soldier.

Over Tim Hardin las ik toevallig vandaag dat hij nog eventjes zanger van Can is geweest in de jaren '70. Dat vond ik wel opvallend, want ik associeer hem toch vooral van ingetogen folkliedjes zoals Black Sheep Boy waar hij bij ons mee scoort. Dit nummer ken ik nog niet zo goed, maar zal vanzelf wel op zijn plaats vallen als ik het eenmaal vaker gehoord heb. Zijn stem is in ieder geval prachtig.

Bob Dylan scoort met het bluesy Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, ik meen alweer de vijfde single van Blonde on Blonde. Ik lees dat de tekst en melodie geïnspireerd zouden zijn op Lightnin' Hopkins' Automobile Blues en dat hoor ik wel een beetje, al kleed Dylan het nummer veel meer aan.

Ro-D-Ys komt uit Oude Pekela, dus we hebben weer eens een nieuwe binnenkomer van Nederlandse makelij. Take Her Home is een simpel, maar bijzonder aanstekelijk liedje. Echt een oorwurm. Overigens geproduceerd door Hans van Hemert, iemand die nog wel vaker zou opduiken in de Nederlandse popgeschiedenis en in de jaren '60 ook Zen, Group 1850, Q65 en The Motions produceerde.

35. The Move - I Can Hear The Grass Grow
Zonet toevallig het gras gemaaid, ik kan ze weer horen groeien. Prima nummer mede door de psychedelische insteek met briljante vocalen.

38. Rob Hoeke Rhythm & Blues Group - What Is Soul
Inderdaad soulvolle zang en ook hier een licht psychedelisch tintje en bovendien prima gitaarsolo in het midden. Blijkt een Nederlandse band te zijn en dat hoor ik er niet dadelijk aan. Knap!

Het is natuurlijk geen verrassing dat Procol Harum met 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' hoog binnenkomt.
De band overdonderde de hele wereld met dat majestueuze geluid uit de hammondorgel van
Matthew Fisher. Op dat moment was de band uniek met hun sound en vijftig jaar na dato heeft dit nummer nog steeds niet aan kracht ingeboet.

Ik was blij verrast er achter te komen dat het 'oudje 'The Story of Them' ook op single verscheen.
'The Story of Them' is 7.17 minuten genieten op de relaxte groove van de band en de pratende Van Morrison. Het nummer gaat over de eerste maanden van de band in de Rhythm and Blues Club van het Maritime Hotel in Belfast, Noord-Ierland. Het klinkt ouderwets en dat is het ook en het is puur.
De opname is denk ik van 1964.
Ik heb het zelf ook nog meegemaakt, rond 1970. Discotheeks waren er nog nauwelijks. In het weekend gingen wij naar dancings waar bandjes live optraden. Op de rockende liedjes dansten de meisjes met elkaar en stonden de jongens stoer aan de bar te kijken naar al dat schoons. Maar zodra de eerste accoorden van een 'slijp' liedje zoals 'The Story of Them' werd aangeslagen kwamen wij in aktie. Op de dansvloer met een mooie meid in je armen was hét ultieme moment van de avond.

Als er één liedje doet denken aan de flower powertijd dan is het Scott McKenzie's 'San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair') wel. John Phillips van The Mamas and The Papas schreef dit als het officieuze volkslied voor het Monterey Pop Festival dat in de buurt van San Francisco ligt.

De nummers voor de titels corresponderen met een uniek nummer. Pyramid is Groot-Brittanië, Beverley is Jamaica.
Misschien kan Rude boy train ook nog juni zijn, maar dan is die eerder voor Beverley dan voor Pyramid.

Wauw, mooi werk. En leuk ook om het via de producer te sorteren. Hier boven staat een heerlijke Lesley Kong verzamelaar voor de zomer.

Mijn insteek is om het aantal releases per label evenredig te verdelen over het jaar. Stel label x brengt in 1967 24 releases uit, dan is dat gemiddeld 2 per maand. Maar dan kun je er dus wel eens naast zitten. Soms brengen labels ook wel eens 1 of 2 maanden niets uit en dan ineens een paar tegelijk.

Het valt me op dat ik op deze manier in ieder geval wel vaker 1 of 2 maanden vooruit loop.

The Kinks pakken de eerste en tweede plek, erg netjes. En ook Bob Dylan schiet als een speer omhoog. Mooie ontwikkelingen.

Jimi Hendrix scoort met The Wind Cries Mary zijn derde grote hit na Hey Joe en Purple Haze. Inmiddels is ook zijn debuutalbum Are You Experienced verschenen (op 12 mei '67), dus we kunnen wel zeggen dat Jimi Hendrix gearriveerd is. De Mary in de titel is zijn vriendin, voor wie hij het nummer schreef.

Strawberry Alarm Clock bracht eerder Incense and Peppermints uit als b-kant van hun vierde single over de naam Thee Sixpence. Toen dit nummer ineens werd opgepikt door de radiostations, werd er een nieuwe single uitgebracht waarop de a- en b-kanten werden omgedraaid. Daarnaast moest er een door een rechtenkwestie een nieuwe bandnaam worden bedacht. Uiteindelijk werd dit een Amerikaanse nummer 1 hit en sowieso de grote hit van SAC, hierna zouden enkel nog wat kleinere hits volgen.

Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade Of Pale zou zomaar het eerste nummer uit dit jaar kunnen zijn dat ik heb leren kennen. Als jong jongetje putte ik al mijn jaren '60 kennis uit Veronica's Top 100 Allertijden en de eerste editie die ik daarvan was luisterde was waarschijnlijk die van 1990. En daarin is dit het op 2 na hoogst genoteerde nummer uit de jaren '60 en de hoogste uit 1967. Voor mij is dit dus een gigantische klassieker en het helpt ook wel dat dit nummer erg 'oud' aanvoelt. Wellicht komt het door de diverse stukken van Bach waaruit blijkbaar losjes geciteerd wordt (zoals deze). Opvallend dat een stel begin-twintigers met zo'n bijzondere single debuteert.

Ook Franki Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off You heb ik al vroeg leren kennen, zij het door de cover van Gerard Joling en Tatjana van begin jaren '90. Deze versie is uiteraard veel beter. Na Beggin' weer een heel goed liedje van Franki Valli, al is deze geschreven door Bob Crewe (in 1967 ook o.a. verantwoordelijk voor Silence is Golden van The Tremeloes en Music to Watch Girls By van Andy Williams).

Top-40: week 20 van 1967.

29. The Shoes - Peace And Privacy
Toen kwamen er opvallend veel goede Nederlandse rockbands in de top-40 (nu blijkt enkel Kensington daar welkom te zijn). De soulvolle zang van Theo Van Es is hier nog de grootste troef.

30. Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music
Yes, I like sweet soul music en zeker zoals die hier wordt gebracht door Arthur Conley. Swingend tot en met met rauwe zang en vette blazers.

34. Pictures Of Lily - The Who
Wederom een sterke single van The Who, wanneer brengen ze eens een slecht nummer uit? Prima riff en samenzang, opwindend drumwerk en even intelligente als meezingbare tekst.
Cijfer: 8,5

36. The Searchers - Western Union / Five Americans - Western Union
Beide mooie versies die bovendien niet zoveel van elkaar verschillen. Een groots nummer vind ik dat niet maar de stemmen zijn verrukkelijk.
