Met vertraging de weeklijst van week 32. Keith West pakt de koppositie, maar een nieuwe Beach Boys-single van hoge kwaliteit ligt al op de loer om deze snel over te nemen. Heroes and Villains was bedoeld als een van de stukken op Smile, het album dat Brian Wilson na Pet Sounds wilde uitbrengen, maar dat hem uiteindelijk teveel werd. Uiteindelijk werd deze versie uitgebracht en het doet wat mij betreft niet onder voor de betere songs van Pet Sounds.

Verder nieuwe binnenkomers voor Jackie Wilson (wellicht zijn signature song), Michel Polnareff en Small Faces met de eerste uit een reeks van ijzersterke singles.

The Beach Boys pakken de koppositie deze week, al bleek door een kleine vertelling dat ze hier eigenlijk vorige week ook al (samen met Keith West) recht op hadden. Maar deze week kan er geen twijfel over bestaan, al zitten de Box Tops ze op de hielen.

Hoogste nieuwe is From the Underworld van The Herd, waarin we een 17-jarige Peter Frampton horen zingen. Een naam die nog lang rond zou gaan in de muziekwereld... De titel verwijst naar het verhaal van Orpheus en Eurydice uit de Griekse mythologie, waarin Eurydice voorgoed verdwijnt. Dit zou in dit lied symbool staan voor het verdwijnen van de modsubcultuur... Het is in ieder geval een tof psychedelisch nummer en dat vond Mojo ook, want die publiceerde ooit een lijst met de beste Britse psychedelica en daar stond dit nummer ook tussen.

Dan een Frans blokje met Brel en Hardy. Jacques Brel's Le Chanson des Vieux Amants is in Nederland bekend geworden via de versie van Herman van Veen, die ik ook erg mooi vind. Maar Brel zingt het liefdeslied nog net even hartverscheurender. Francoise Hardy's Voila is gewoon een rustig slepend liedje zoals we dat van haar kennen, hoewel de thematiek (een onbeantwoorde liefde) het hoofd wel bezighoudt ("Oh, pourquoi ne puis-je pas te dire: Je t'aime, je t'aime, je t'aime").

The Creation is vooral bekend van Painter Man uit 1966, maar If I Stay Too Long is meer een soort blues-achtige ballad. In de verte doet het me wel wat aan de rustiger nummers van bijvoorbeeld The Animals denken.

Ik ben de laatste tijd wat aan het knoeien, excuses. Dit zou de aanduiding (RE) moeten hebben.

Geeft niks. Ik pas het nog even aan!

Geen foutjes maken lijkt onmogelijk. Ook Marzi knoeit mee.

Neem de Index 1967-3 daar stond "Love makes sweet music" van The Soft machine maar die was ook in de index 1967-4 opgenomen.

Deze index behoort nog bij 13 augustus. Die van 20 augustus (index-6 maart 1967) probeer ik de komende dagen te leveren.
Er volgen steeds 2 indexen per maand (totaal 24) en daarna nog eens per kwartaal een index met restjes van 3 maanden (totaal 4) en we sluiten het jaar af met nog eens 2 indexen met restjes over het jaar waarmee we in totaal op minstens 30 indexen met 2010 singletracks uitkomen.
Op dit moment zitten we op 335 singletracks.

Dit keer wil ik n.a.v. nr. 5 "Arnold Layne" jullie het boek White Bicycles van Joe Boyd van harte aanbevelen. Hij was de producer van deze single en hij beschrijft in zijn boek hoe hij muziek "maakte" in de 60's.
Interessant is meteen Joe's openingszin: ""The Sixties began in the summer of 1956, ended in the autumn of 1973 and peaked just before dawn on Saturday, July 1, 1967".
En dat gaat hij daarna in 272 pagina's verder uitleggen.

Deze index kent ook weer veel nullen en dat betekent dat we ze (al dan niet bewust) hebben genegeerd in onze lijstjes.
Bij nr. 4 en 23 heb ik spijt want deze zijn toch wel top40-waardig voor mij. Maar ik heb deze duidelijk over het hoofd gezien.
Wellicht is dat ook het geval voor anderen met Michel Polnareff, want bijna elke single van hem scoort tot nu toe heel aardig in dit topic. Nr. 67 is echter wel een stuk steviger dan we meestal van hem gewend zijn.

Opvallend is begin 1967 de doorbraak van Annie MG Schmidt en Harry Bannink, die bijna elke maand wel diverse singles leverden waarvan "Op een mooie Pinksterdag", "M'n opa" en "de oude Jacob" wekenlang de Nederlandse top 40 wisten te bezetten.
Opmerkelijk is het grote aantal nummers dat niet de top 40 haalde en dat toch (voor mij althans) heel bekend is. "Wat voor weer zou het zijn in Den Haag", "Wilt u een stekkie" en deze maand nr. 20 "Hendrik Haan" en nr. 44 "Schipbreukeling".
Wie meer wil lezen over de achtergrond van al deze liedjes, de biografie "Anna" van Annejet van der Zijl is tegenwoordig terug te vinden in de literatuurlijst van menige middelbare scholier. Uiteraard had Annejet goede bestaande bronnen voor handen zoals Hans Vogels "Wacht maar tot ik dood ben" (die zelf ook dood ging voordat hij het boek af had) maar het is met het boek van Annejet net als met goede liedjes. Je moet de juiste noten goed op een rijtje zetten en dat is haar uitstekend gelukt. Er werd zelfs een TV-serie n.a.v. haar boek gemaakt.

Wie nog dieper wil spitten in bepaalde liedjes van Schmidt en Bannink kan ik het koffertje Ja Zuster Nee zuster (klik) aanbevelen bestaande uit foto's, een boek met alle afleveringen uitgeschreven, bladmuziek en twee CD's.
De bladmuziek is het meest interessant. Bannink heeft de laatste maanden van zijn leven deze helemaal uitgeschreven. En ook Bannink stierf voordat het koffertje uit kwam.
Nu kunnen we zien dat de liedjes technisch enorm goed zijn. Zo kent "Hendrik Haan" diverse toonsoortwijzigingen en is "Schipbreukeling" opgebouwd uit diverse arpeggios die nauwelijks onderdoen voor een klassieke etude.

Voor het eerst sinds tijden heb ik mijn lijstje klaar op de beoogde inzenddag.

Ik zag tot mijn verbazing dat mijn nummer 1 deze week ook de nummer 1 is in de HOT100. Terwijl ik dacht dat ik het niet kende, moet ik dat nummer veel vaker gehoord hebben en nooit op waarde geschat. Het leven is een opeenstapeling van fouten.

Aardig wat nieuwe binnenkomers:

The Young Rascals viel mij op vanwege de zin "How Can I Be Sure / In a World That's Constantly Changing", die ik herkende uit Tricky's Aftermath (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25y3cMC9i94). Mooi samplegebruik en een fascinerende zin. En ook het liedje is top, hoewel Aftermath wel echt een topfavoriet is.

Verder een Stones-single die me nog niet helemaal grijpt. Vergeleken bij de meeste singles hiervoor is deze toch wel aanzienlijk minder. Gelukkig breekt bijna hun beste periode aan.

Het is een atypisch Stones nummer dat wel, maar ik vind het een meesterwerk.

Mijn vorige mag mee..

Eens met heicro, vooral de lyrics zijn behoorlijk poetisch: We don't care if you only love we.
Maar wellicht kan herman Dandelion proberen. Die is typischer Stones en ook een A-kant.

Als ik geen tijd en inspiratie heb dan laat ik commentaar bij mijn lijstje achterwege.
Maar hermans lijstje bevat in één oogopslag diverse opvallende verbandjes bij de nieuwkomers. Een van de beste uitvoeringen van "How Can I Be Sure" ken ik van Dusty Springfield.
De grootste hituitvoering van dat nummer kwam van David Cassidy maar als hij tegenwoordig optreedt dan staat vrijwel altijd Hush op zijn speellijst.
Tricky heeft "How Can I Be Sure" ook gebruikt maar die is vooral weer fan van Isaac Hayes, één van de componisten van Soul Man getuige de nummers "Overcome" en "Hell is around the corner".
En over Aftermath gesproken. Luister naar dat album van de Stones en je moet het met me eens zijn dat ze ook al een fantastische periode achter de rug hebben.

Ja, Aftermath is geweldig, maar ik ben sowieso wel een Stones-liefhebber. Alleen heb ik vooral de albums veel gedraaid, dus We Love You/Dandelion is nagenoeg nieuw voor mij. Ik merk dat ik We Love You per luisterbeurt wel beter ga vinden.

De Dusty-versie van How Can I Be Sure had ik lang niet gehoord. Erg mooi inderdaad en opvallend om eens een accordeon te horen.

Het is spannend bovenin met een afgetekende top 3. Maar The Box Tops pakken de eerste plek met het weergaloze The Letter.

Sinds mijn bericht van gisteren heb ik 'We Love You' al een keer of drie meer gedraaid en ik kan wel zeggen dat 'ie bij mij nog flink gaat stijgen. Gewoon een behoorlijk spannend nummer waarin de muzikale kaders weer wat worden verschoven, zeker na het rock 'n' roll achtige Let's Spend The Night Together. Het psychedelische outro zou een mooie opmaat kunnen zijn voor een live-improvisatie. Dandelion is wat meer de Stones zoals we gewend zijn. Overigens zijn op beide songs Lennon & McCartney in de achtergrond te horen.

Expressway to Your Heart is de eerste hit voor de Philly soulgroep Soul Survivors en zoals dat wel vaker gaat met eerste hits gelijk ook veruit de grootste. Hierna was de koek al snel op. Dat gold niet voor voor songwritersduo Kenneth Gamble en Leon Huff, die hiermee hun eerste grote hit scoorden. Er zouden er nog vele (Backstabbers, Me and Mrs. Jones, If You Don't Know Me By Now, Love Train, Now That We Found Love, When Will I See You Again volgen voor andere groepen.

Let's Get Together werd geschreven door Chet Powers en al eerder uitgevoerd door bv. Kingston Trio en Jefferson Airplane, maar de versie van The Youngbloods is toch de bekendste geworden. De samenzang van beide zangers is in ieder geval prachtig. In 1967 deed dit nummer niet zoveel, maar toen het in 1969 in een radio-reclame werd gebruikt werd het alsnog een grote hit.

Het is een bekend feit....1967 is de boeken ingegaan als een ultiem popmuziek jaar. De ene mijlpaal na de andere werd gemaakt. Vernieuwende pschychedelica vierde hoogtij, Procol Harum was daar ineens met een nooit eerder gehoorde symfonisch rock hoogstandje en ook het eerste concept album was een feit, ja, die van The Beatles.
Maar als je de Britse hitlijst bestudeert dan zie je ook weinig vernieuwende middle-off-the-road niemanddalletjes. De zingende smoking Engelbert Humperdinck stond vijf weken op 1 met zijn schlager 'The Last Walz' om maar te zwijgen over 'Release Me' dat een nog grotere hit was en ook nachtclubzanger Tom Jones, actrice Anita Harris en Vicky Carr deden het zeer goed met hun smartlappen. In Nederland werd de single 'Waarom heb jij me laten staan?' van De Heikrekels, bekend geworden als één van de meest oubollige nummers aller tijden, dé hit van het jaar. En toch heeft het jaar 1967, ondanks een stortvloed aan matige liedjes, voor mij persoonlijk heel veel opgeleverd. De hoeveelheid all times favourites, zowel singles als albums is vergeleken met andere jaren niet te overtreffen.

Mijn huidige top 20 behoort al sinds jaar en dag tot mijn all times favourites en in de lagere regionen staan daar nog een paar bij. Voor het eerst scoren overigens alle nummers in mijn top 40 minimaal een 8. En hiermee is opnieuw een mijlpaal bereikt, althans voor mij persoonlijk.

Ik wou nog even iets over een bijzonder nummer kwijt. Het gaat om 'Square Room' van Them.
Nadat Van Morrison de band had verlaten verhuisden de resterende leden van Ierland naar de Verenigde States om daar het roer helemaal om te gooien en zich te storten op West Coast psychedelische rock. 'Square Room' word de Ierse versie van 'The End' van The Doors genoemd, maar dat gaat mij iets te ver. Het nummer heeft in ieder geval dezelfde sfeer en lengte, dat wel. De psychedelische en Indiase geluiden maakt het nummer wel heel boeiend. Ik heb geen lsd nodig om in een soort trip te geraken.

De belangrijkste stijgers zijn verder Traffic met 'Hole In My Shoe' dat moeizaam op weg is naar een nummer 1 notering, maar vooralsnog wordt tegengehouden door twee andere magistrale nummers.
De andere stijger in de top 10 zijn The Mamas And The Papas met Twelve Thirty, hun laatste bloedmooie kunststukje.

Van de vier nieuwkomers is 'People Are Strange' van The Doors de bekendste. 'Light My Fire' overtreffen was onmogelijk maar dit was een waardige opvolger. Niet alleen dankzij het schrijverstrio Holland-Dozier-Holland scoorden The Four Tops hit na hit, maar ook dankzij hun ongeevenaarde zangkwaliteiten.
Jefferson Airplane en Brian Wilson en Mike Love hadden wat extra luisterbeurten nodig, maar maken al indruk....waar gaat dit heen?

Frank Ifield, Kenn Dodd, Vince Hill, Val Doonican. De Britse hitlijst heeft inderdaad veel matige artiesten opgeleverd. En niet alleen de Britse hitlijst.

Maar het kan nog erger. Laten we ons gaan kijken naar wat de slechtste single van het jaar 1967 is en per kwartaal een hele slechte single uitkiezen.

Uit de releaseoverzichten (1967-6) kies ik voor het eerste kwartaal van 1967 voor deze:

Wat mij direct al tegenstaat is de tekst op de singlehoes die je ook op YouTube ziet. This is not a protest song. But rather the plea of a kid brother on behalf of himself and his parents.....
Dit lijkt mij een politiek correct statement vanuit commerciële doeleinden gemaakt want bijna elke protest-song kan je ook tot die laatste categorie rekenen al dan niet namens wie dan ook. En muzikaal gezien is het ook al bijzonder weinig. Een zwakke compositie, nog zwakkere arrangementen en een 11-jarig zangertje dat eerst maar eens wat meer zanglessen moet afmaken voordat hij zijn volgende singletje uitbrengt (vandaar dat we daar nog steeds op zitten te wachten).

Wij krijgen volgende maand Heintje. Ik bedoel dat ventje dat de meest populaire artiest van 1968 in Nederland en Duitsland zou worden.

Daar kijk ik ook niet echt naar uit.
Overigens had ik in 1967 nog wel enig plezier aan een andere Heintje. Een stripblad van Albert Heijn.
Daar stonden in ieder geval nog wel eens leuke muzikale nootjes in. Neem bijvoorbeeld deze van 20 september 1967. Een goede introductie voor het jonge Marsepeinboompje in de wereld van de popmuziek.

(33) Sly and the Family Stone - Underdog
Het 'Frère Jacques' motiefje is populair in 1967. Groep 1850 komt aan het eind van het jaar nog met de single Mother no-head en Sly and the Family Stone gebruiken het voor hun debuutsingle in intro en outro. Ze bevinden zich in goed gezelschap van Mahler die in zijn debuutsymfonie ook al dit motiefje gebruikte. De 14 LP's die Bernstein eind 1967 uitbracht met Mahlers complete Symfonieën is in zijn oorspronkelijke uitgave uiterst zeldzaam en net als de beide popsingletjes een waar collectors-item.

(35) Them - Square room / Dirty Old Man (At The Age Of Sixteen)
Jammer dat ze het op single hebben verknipt tot nauwelijks meer dan 3 minuten. Daardoor werd mijn trip een tripje. Deze zou anders minstens 20 plekken hoger staan.
