Deze derde index van 1967 bevat een deel van de bijzonder sterke maand februari 1967. Ik zie veel sterretjes, en dat bedoel ik gelukkig niet als medisch verschijnsel als gevolg van het samenstellen van deze lijst, maar letterlijk, want dat betekent dat van deze serie veel singletracks in onze lijstjes hebben gestaan.

Aanbevolen boek bij deze index is geïnspireerd op nr. 55 Sous le soleil exactement, een compositie van Serge Gainsbourg.
Ergens op een plek, ik ben vergeten waar maar in ieder geval onder de zon is zo'n beetje de strekking van dit nummer. En dat kunnen we nog te vaag vinden en daarom raad ik de speciale reisgids "Parcours Gainsbourg" van Rudolf Hecke (klik) aan. Een soort atlas om exact vast te stellen waar Serge ondermeer zijn schreden gezet heeft. En dat waren zeker niet alleen zonnige plekken.

35: Hi Hi Hazel

Het is natuurlijk niet hun beste song, maar ik vind het een prima verteerbaar laidback nummertje. Goed dat ze dat alsnog uitbrengen. Het doet me erg denken aan D.W. Washburn, dat ze in mei 1968 uitbrengen. Daarvan wordt het origineel dan weer toegeschreven aan The Coasters, die het in oktober 1967 opnemen en pas in juli 1968 uitbrengen.

30: Morning Dew

In deze kritiek kan ik me beter vinden. Het origineel komt uit Canada, Bonnie Dobson, en is al uit 1964. Ik ken het nummer natuurlijk ook van het debuutalbum van The Grateful Dead uit maart 1967. Ook zij brengen het nummer op single uit, maar dat is pas in 2017. Daar moeten we hier dus nog 50 jaar op wachten.

Na 2 singles van I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You is het nu de beurt aan de 1ste single van Aretha Arrives, het tweede studio-album van Aretha dat in 1967 uitkwam. Net als I Never Loved etc. werd deze single geschreven door Ronnie Shannon. Persoonlijk vind ik hem niet het niveau halen van de vorige twee single van Aretha, maar desalniettemin is het een erg genietbaar nummer.

La Balsa is de debuutsingle van de Argentijnse Los Gatos, en werd een gigantische hit in Zuid-Amerika. Muzikaal is het erg beat-geïnspireerd, maar wel met invloeden van bv. bossanova. Het nummer werd overigens geschreven op het toilet van een in Buenos Aires populaire bar onder muzikanten, waar (als ik de Wiki mag geloven) regelmatig liedjes werd uitgetest vanwege de goede akoestiek. De Wiki is overigens zeer uitgebreid, ik kom eigenlijk zelden zoiets tegen. Volgens mij staat er meer tekst dan op de Wiki's van All You Need Is Love, White Rabbit en See Emily Play bij elkaar.

Love You Till Tuesday is voorlopig de laatste single van Bowie. Over 2 jaar volgt Space Oddity en neemt zijn carrière een enorme vlucht. Maar LYTT is ook een erg leuk nummer van een nog jonge (20) Bowie. Een beetje Kinks-achtig en ook voortbordurend op The Laughing Gnome, hoewel minder melig. Ik vind het eigenlijk wel jammer dat hij relatief weinig singles heeft uitgebracht eind jaren '60/begin '70, maar het is niet anders.

Redelijk wat vernieuwing nu de drie langstgenoteerde nummers uit de lijst vallen. En bovenin is er voor de vierde week op rij een nieuwe nummer 1.

Jackie WIlson scoort na Whispers (Gettin' Louder) pas zijn tweede hit in mijn lijst. Die haalde de 16e plek, dus dat is gelijk geëvenaard. Wellicht waren het er meer geweest als ik al eerder een top 40 ipv top 20 had gehad. Higher and Higher is in ieder geval een geweldig nummer. Wat een energie!

Aretha scoorde er wel wat meer:

Verder een fijn debuut van The Box Tops. Lekker soul-achtig plaatje.

Richard Anthony is mierzoet en flink melodramatisch, maar ik vind het wel mooi. Uit de Franse charts gehaald.

Otis Redding alleen is natuurlijk ook mooi, maar wel elke keer ongeveer hetzelfde. Maar in duet vind ik het toch wel wat hebben. En het nummer is zo goed dat ie als cover gerust nog eens binnen mag komen.

Het nummer van de Small Faces is een grote klassieker, maar op de een of andere manier heb ik er toch niet helemaal een klik mee. Misschien komt dat de komende week wel.

Ik ga je niet om de oren slaan.
Ik zie dat je vaak jouw informatie uit de wiki haalt. Er is daar ook een uitgebreide pagina (klik) over morning dew. Geweldig veel informatie krijgen we daar................






Ik stel toch voor om een aantal verbeterpunten aan te brengen.
- "Morning Dew" was not published until 1964 staat op de wiki. Dat klopt niet, deze is al gepubliceerd in juni 1962 in het folkkrantje Broadside (klik).
Het nummer mag hier dan "Take me for a walk" heten maar dat had de Wiki wel even erbij kunnen vermelden.
- The first studio recording of "Morning Dew" appeared on the 1964 album Tear Down The Walls by Fred Neil and Vince Martin staat op de wiki. Dat klopt niet, de eerste studio-opname is van The Briarwood Singers (klik).
Er staat trouwens een merkwaardige fout op het label van deze single . Als componist staat O. Brown maar die is wel heel toevallig de componist van het tweede nummer van "Broadside".

Als het goed is ben ik je inmiddels kwijt, Justus, want ik zit al weer op veel meer dan 47 woorden, dus of ik moet een ander onderwerp starten of op een andere manier je aandacht trekken.

Ik kies voor het laatste. Er zit ergens een poes in dit nummer verstopt. De "morning dew" heeft niet alleen als betekenis de dauw op het gras of de fall out bij een kernramp maar heeft ook nog een derde betekenis. (klik hier en zie onder 2 en 3, waarbij het "grass" uiteraard geen marihuana is)
Ja, die folkies hebben literaire teksten met diepgang.

Ander onderwerp
Uiteraard was het je ook opgevallen, Justus, dat het origineel van Hi hi hazel reeds vorig jaar in de releaseoverzichten was meegenomen. Dat origineel is van Geno washington (nr 849) - (klik).

01 (18) The Small Faces - Itchycoo park. Waar kan je afleiding zoeken voor het drukke stadse leven? In een park. Je kunt er met je dochtertje lekker kuieren in de zon. Of je kunt er afspreken met je lief. Of je kunt er in hogere sferen geraken.
En waar ligt Itchycoo park? Dat maakt niets uit. Het kan elk park zijn. Zolang er maar eendjes zijn.
Want daar zul je de ware schoonheid van het leven ontdekken.

02 (22) Soul survivors - Expressway to your heart. Soms kost het veel moeite om een meisje te versieren. Ook ik kan er over meepraten. Dan heb je het gevoel dat je in een file staat. Hoe lang gaat dit nog duren? Zal ik de volgende afslag nemen en teruggaan? Maar dan heb ik mijn reisdoel niet bereikt. De aanhouder wint maar dit schiet niet op met al die weggebruikers om me heen. Toet, toet, toet.
Prachtig nummer met een combinatie van stadse geluiden zoals "Summer in the city" en Philladelphia soul. Blanke soul nog wel en .... van de bovenste plank.

03 (29) Laura Lee - Dirty man. Dit is dan weer zwarte soul maar dat is voor sommigen een pleonasme. Southern Soul is wellicht een betere term. Het klinkt alsof alles door de moerassen rondom Memphis heen is gehaald met een modderige gitaar en een korrelige stem. Maar het is eigenlijk Chicago Soul. Dus al dat vuil moet verdwijnen. Laura maakt haar hele huis schoon. En zet ook haar man bij het afval. Opgeruimd staat netjes.

04 (30) Nou krijg je de kans, Luc, om de meest vrolijke plaat van de sixties goed te recenseren en dan ga je zitten zuipen. Ik spreek je morgen als je weer nuchter bent in 1992.
Voor mij is dit de beste single van the Tremeloes maar wellicht kunnen ze me de komende jaren nog verrassen. Ik ontdekte dat een bietgroep uit Leeuwarden dit voor het eerst op single zette in juni 1967. Dat "leende" ze van de LP van the Tremeloes uit mei 1967. Dat zou betekenen dat deze Friese uitvoering de oudste singlerelease van dit nummer is.
Maar wat uit hun uitvoering blijkt is dat het nummer niet voor iedereen simpel is. The Unbeatable worden overduidelijk verslagen door the Tremeloes wat mij betreft.

05 (34) Waylon Jennings - The Chokin Kind. Dit is het origineel van een liedje dat nadien veel gecovered is. Volgens mij niet om de versie van Waylon te verbeteren maar omdat men het zo'n mooi liedje vindt. Want Waylon zingt het voortreffelijk. Een warme gladde stem maar alsof zijn keel soms wordt dichtgeknepen door iets verstikkends. I've given you my heart and now you want my mind. Tja, echte liefde moet ook weer niet te ver gaan natuurlijk.

06 (35) Cat stevens - Bad night. Nummer dat mij vooral aanspreekt door zijn fantastische tempowisselingen. Maar voor de rest is het natuurlijk een slechte nacht. En weer krijgt dat waardeloze weer de schuld.

07 (36) Alan Price Set - The House That Jack Built. Jack bouwde meer huisjes want dit is een andere uitvoering dan waar Aretha Franklin volgend jaar mee aan komt en weer een ander als waar Tracie Young in de jaren 80 mee zal komen. Maar het is dan ook een variatie op ons Catootje die op de botermarkt van alles haalde. In Jacks huis is ook van alles te vinden en dat huis wordt alsmaar groter gemaakt.

08 (38) Eric Burdon and the Animals - San Franciscan nights. Dit zijn duidelijk veel betere nachten dan bij Cat maar in San Francisco heb je in ieder geval heel vaak het weer mee. En dit is voor deze week ook een betere reisaanbeveling voor deze stad dan die van The Flowerpot Men. Die blijven nog even op nr. 47 steken.

09 (40) Wilson Pickett - Funky Broadway. Origineel van Dyke and the Blazers maar ik heb ook een zwak voor deze uitvoering van Wilson. Veel onbepaalde locaties bij mijn nieuwkomers deze week. En hier is het ook nog niet een uitgemaakte zaak of het Broadway in Phoenix is waar Dyke woonde of Broadway in New York waar hij oorspronkelijk vandaan kwam.
Het maakt ook hier niets uit want het is volgens mij op beide plekken mooi.

Waar zou Heicro naar toe verhuist zijn?
Wat maakt dat uit. Het zal overal mooi zijn. Ik zal mijn commentaar niet willen verloochenen rondom mijn laatste serie nieuwkomers in mijn top 40.

Het is alleen wel jammer dat wij verstokt blijven van Heicro's commentaar momenteel.
Hij heeft blijkbaar een flinke opknapwoning gekocht, zo'n "House that Jack built".
Eens Luigi: Jack, Jacques, house, woning, built, veel werkzaamheden. Dat kan geen toeval zijn.
Sinds dat die Alan Price Set in Heicros lijstje staat is hij compleet gestopt met commentaar.

En het zou stiekem toch wel mooi zijn als hij verhuist is naar Den Haag.
Want hij is de enige die tot nog toe in dit topic uitgebreid reclame heeft gemaakt voor deze stad waar hij in zijn jonge jaren opgroeide.

En terecht.
Laten we bovenstaande index 1967-4 erbij pakken.
"Wat voor weer zou het zijn in Den Haag" van Connie Stuart (nr. 60). "Den Haag met je lege paleizen" van Paul van Vliet (nr. 11). Ja, dat is ook sixties muziek.

En dan heb ik het nog niet eens over "echte" sixties beatmuziek, want sixties beat en Den Haag zijn zeer nauw met elkaar verbonden.

Deze maand hebben we wat dat betreft: Indiscrimation (nr. 63), The Haigs (nr. 18), The Mack (nr. 2) en The Shane (nr. 31).
En de komende maanden zullen nog veel meer Haagse bands en artiesten binnen 1967 passeren zoals: Bojoura, The Centaurs, The Hurricane, The Jumping pop-in, The time breakers, Groep 1850, Attention!, The Nicols, Chapter II, The Motions, Golden Earrings, After tea, Q65, The Motions, John King Size Russell, Check, Sandy Coast, The Moody sec, The Fun of it, Hu & the Hilltops, Jenny and the Rascals, The Shocking Blue, The Six Young Riders, The Bumble Bees, The Jay-jays en The Hague Sound Boys.

Tientallen bands uit de Hofstad. Zet daar maar eens een band uit, ik kies maar een willekeurige plaats uit, Hengelo bijvoorbeeld tegenover.

Er zijn ook wel leuke bands buiten Den Haag in bovenstaand overzicht. Die Nederlandstalige band uit het Brabantse Dongen met de Engelse naam "The Symptomes" (nr. 67) bijvoorbeeld. Die zijn naar mijn mening in ieder geval vele malen beter dan dé Nederlandstalige band van het jaar 1967, althans bij Radio Veronica: de Heikrekels uit het Brabantse Geldrop (Waarom heb je me laten staan?).
Beide bands worden genegeerd door de vrouw die ze begeren. Ook toevallig dat ze hetzelfde thema hebben.
Eens Johan. Er zal ook hier wel een goede reden voor zijn.

En in ieder geval is het ook niet toevallig dat Den Haag de popstad van Nederland werd. Dat probeert het boek wat ik aanbeveel voor deze week wel duidelijk te maken en wat mij betreft slagen ze daar ook nog in. Dat boek is "Het Liverpool van Nederland" van "Ton van Steen en Bert Bossink" (klik). Over de Haagse wortels van de Nederlandse popmuziek.

Ik ben opgegroeid in een van de suburbs van Den Haag. Vlak nadat ik vertrok naar de hoofdstad kreeg het dorp muzikaal kortstondig landelijke bekendheid. Men sprak van de Wassenaarse Welle. Op de wiki valt er niets over te lezen. Een paar van de bands die van deze "stroming" deel uit maakten heb ik live gezien en vond ik erg goed. Ook op YT heb ik weinig terug gevonden, behalve een uitzending van het programma Suburbia

Van Magick1 is de lijst van een week eerder nog eens meegenomen. De weeklijst van volgende week zal een paar dagen later zijn i.m.v. Justus' vakantie. Bonne vacances!

De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is een echte one hit wonder, want Keith West wist verder alleen een week tipparade te scoren met 'Sam'. Excerpt From a Teenage Opera is daarentegen wel zeer bekend en volgens mij ook een nummer met een hoge love-it-or-hate-it-factor. Zelf vind ik het een geweldig nummer over een het tragische verhaal van een groenteboer aan huis die het leven laat, tot verdriet van de buurtkinderen die hem ondanks hun plagerijen toch wel missen.
Overigens zit Keith West ook in Tomorrow, die hier een paar maanden terug een hitje scoorden met My White Bicycle.

The Letter van The Box Tops is ook een flinke klassieker. Een perfect soul-achtig nummer van nog geen twee minuten, ingezongen door Alex Chilton, dan pas 16 (!) jaar oud. Chilton zou met The Box Tops nog tot 1970 hits scoren en daarna verder gaan met Big Star.

Bobbie Gentry's Ode to Billy Joe is een fraai stukje storytelling over Billy Joe McAllister die van een brug in de Tallahatchee rivier is gesprongen en vervolgens verdronken. Het nummer roept meer vragen op dan het beantwoord. Waarom is hij gesprongen? Zijn de vader of dochter uit het liedje er bij betrokken geweest op de een of andere manier? Intrigerend nummer.

Pata Pata is de grote hit van Miriam Makeba en wat mij betreft een zeer aanstekelijk nummer en ik denk het eerste afropopliedje in dit topic? Makeba nam het overigens in 1957 al op in Zuid-Afrika, waar zij toen nog woonde en een succesvol zangeres was.

Er zijn een aantal bekende ergernissen waarmee ik regelmatig in dit topic geconfronteerd wordt:

1) Singletjes verschijnen te vroeg of de releasedatum is moeilijk te achterhalen. In het eerste geval is het alsof je een kind te vroeg laat geboren worden, in het tweede geval weet je niet eens of het te vroeg of te laat geboren wordt.
Twee voorbeelden: Rateyourmusic dacht: gelukkig hebben we de foto's nog (klik). Maar op basis van het labelnummer links bovenin op de hoes die voor het eerst in december 1969 in deze vorm werd gebruikt komt deze single uit West-Duitsland en is van maart 1970.
Rateyourmusic dacht wederom: gelukkig hebben we de foto's nog (klik). Het medaille-embleem op de singlelabel van studio 1 werd niet eerder gebruikt dan in 1981. Dawn Penns singlehoesje op de foto is van rond 1982.
De oudste single van dit nummer dateert uit januari 1968 in Engeland en is een promo en het oudste hoesje is uit Jamaica van maart 1968. Zie hier onder nr. 2030a de oudste afbeeldingen.
Het is uiteraard Rateyourmusic en niet Dateyourmusic dus wellicht moet ik mij hier niet zo ergeren.

2) Er zijn te weinig plekken in een top 40. Uiteraard kan je uitbreiden naar een top 50 of 60 maar de ervaring leert dat het dan lastig wordt om dat vol te houden. Het is alsof je een kraamafdeling vol met kinderen hebt maar toch diverse mooie kindjes de toegang moet weigeren.
Twee voorbeelden van erg fraaie singletjes die ik niet heb kunnen toelaten:
Misschien wel de allerbeste single uit het jaar 1967 die niet mijn top 40 haalde. Justus18 had wel meegenomen.
Vooral de b-kant Sandstorm is zeer de moeite waard.
Gelukkig heb ik mijn eindejaarslijst nog.

Laten we deze irritaties eens bekijken deze week bij mijn.....

Nieuwkomers
01 (12) The Herd - From the underworld. Net als Orpheus moet je in de onderwereld nooit achterom maar vooruit kijken. Pas als je uit de onderwereld bent dan kan je pas achterom kijken. En ook na 50 jaar ben ik nog steeds verliefd op deze Eurydice. Ik hoop dat ik niet te snel achterom gekeken heb want op basis van de labeling vermoed ik dat de releasedatum van dit nummer 11 augustus 1967 is.
Wat een mooie single is dit. Een repetitieve melodie die omhangen wordt met allerlei fraaie versieringen waardoor er totaal geen sprake is van eentonigheid.

02 (17) The Association - Never My Love. Deze plaat werd in oktober 1967 ook in Nederland uitgebracht maar werd geen hit in Nederland en haalde zelfs de Veronica Tipparade niet.
Schande! Vooral ook omdat we het nu zonder het commentaar van LucM moeten doen.

03 (19) Jacques Brel - La chanson des vieux amants / Les Bonbons 67. En deze single (klik), die was niet in Nederland te krijgen, behalve als import. Ook een schande natuurlijk.
Nou en of, de labeling gaat bij Barclay op nogal willekeurige basis, dus kan je daar geen conclusies uit te trekken qua releasedatum behalve dat de catalogisering staat rond juli 1967. Het nummer is op 3 januari 1967 opgenomen en komt eind augustus in sommige hitlijstjes binnen. Kortom, lastig inderdaad maar volgens mij zit deze wel rond de "uitgerekende" datum heen.

04 (28) The Jamaicans - Bababoom. Hiervan is de releasedatum makkelijker te achterhalen want het was een zogenaamde festivalplaat. En die worden rond de viering van onafhankelijkheid in Jamaica uitgebracht, rond 6 augustus 1967 dus.

05 (29) The Hombres - Let it all hang out. En dan kom je in dat topic met een top 15 dus dan zijn the Hombres nergens terug te vinden. Uiteraard maakt heicro dit nog goed met uitbreiding naar minstens top 20 vanaf september dit jaar. Naar nr. 42 deze week!

06 (37) Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive. (EP)

07 (38) The Models - Bend me shape me. Het origineel vinden we op de LP In! van de Amerikaanse Outsiders uit januari 1967 (klik). De bekendste singleuitvoering komt, ook voor mij, van the American Breed dus deze single van the Models zou je de meest originele singleuitvoering kunnen noemen. En wat vind je van deze dames heicro? Ook lekker? Muzikaal gezien natuurlijk!

08 (39) The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's lonely heart club band. (EP). Dit is toch wel een bastaard hoor (klik)! Iranees en niet uitgebracht door welk label dan ook onder beheer van EMI.
We kunnen ze het in Perzië niet helemaal kwalijk nemen want daar bestond geen dependance van platenmaatschappij EMI en importeren vanuit andere landen was duur dus ik begrijp wel dat ze hiermee kwamen. Ik vermoed dat als die in Nederland was uitgebracht in deze vorm dan had die zondermeer minstens een maand lang op bij mij 1 gestaan. Want de volgorde bevalt mij zeer, het eerste deel van de LP en het laatste deel van de LP. Minpunt is dat de reprise er niet op staat.
Maar toch laat ik hem bescheiden binnenkomen en nummer 1 zal deze niet halen. Het is en blijft een bastaard.
