Blij met de nieuwe singles van The Doors (toch een van mijn favoriete bands) en Sly and the Family Stone (langzaam ook een steeds grotere favoriet aan het worden en deze single had ik zelf nog niet in het vizier). The Doors pakken binnen het jaar gelijk door met hun tweede album en Sly and the Family Stone debuteren gelijk op hoog niveau, want hoewel Underdog niet tot hun klassieke singles behoort, vind ik hem wel erg goed.

Blijft lastig met de reggae/ska-plaatjes, maar afgaande op de catalogusnummers van Pyramid is Unity wel ongeveer in deze tijd uitgebracht. Mocht er ergens een ska-bijbel zijn met alle releasedata of een hitdossier van de Jamaicaanse hitparade in de jaren '60, dan houd ik me aanbevolen.

Verder een fijne soul van The Soul Survivors en Marvin en Tammi en de bossanova van Astrud Gilberto. Gilberto bracht behoorlijk veel singles/ep's uit in de zomer, maar het meeste vind ik toch te zijig. Nu realiseerde ik me afgelopen week dat ik afgelopen zomer ook wel heel weinig bossanova (en überhaupt Braziliaanse muziek) heb gedraaid in vergelijking met voorgaande jaren, dus misschien ligt het ook wel aan mij. Berimbau mag in ieder geval wel binnenkomen (zelfs al vind ik de versie door Nara Leao een stuk mooier).

Nara Leão heeft in april nog een aardige single afgeleverd: "Quem te viu quem te vê". Maar reggea/ska-plaatjes zijn inderdaad lastiger.
Unity is volgens mij van oktober maar we moeten bij Jamaicaanse singles maar niet kijken naar een maandje minder of meer. En wat een Jamaicaans hitdossier betreft, ik beloof dat ik daarop terugkom in één van de indexen.

Van het Eurovisie Songfestival zijn behoorlijk wat boeken verschenen.
Wellicht moet je kiezen voor deze recente want dan heb je een completer beeld. Bovendien heeft deze aardige invalshoeken en probeert die antwoord te geven op de vraag waarom Nederland zo slecht scoorde in het eerste decennium van deze eeuw.

Het meest interessante boek als het over het Songfestival van 1967 gaat vind ik echter: Dinge-Dong van Hans Walraven.

Hier lees je dat in 1967 de nonsens-titels opkwamen in het songfestival met het Nederlandse Ring-dinge ding (nr. 46) en Boum badaboum uit Monaco (niet opgenomen). Het hoogtepunt werd 1978 met vier onzintitels en zelfs een winnaar als onzintitel. Overigens is dit boek genoemd naar de laatste Nederlandse winnaar (ook een onzintitel). In de jaren 80 verdwijnen de onzintitels weer langzaam.
Ook begon in 1967 de hegemonie van de zangeressen. Sandy Shaw (nr. 43) won. En daarna tot 1974 zeven zangeressen. Pas met Abba werd de hegemonie enigszins doorbroken alhoewel het pas tot 1980 duurde dat die echt doorbroken werd.
Verder staat in het boek dat Sandy Shaw haar liedje haatte. Ze heeft er zelfs haar carrière door beëindigd. . Elke andere song van haar (zoals nr. 25) vond ze beter.
Ook beschrijft het boek hoe de Belgische voorronde een veldslag werd met acht liedjes van zes deelnemers in de finale. Louis Neefs trok strategisch één nummer terug en hij won met "Ik heb zorgen" (nr. 29).
Het commercieel meest succesvolle liedje werd de uiteindelijke nummer vier L'amour est bleu (nr. 35) maar in verschillende andere uitvoeringen bij elkaar opgeteld (Paul Mauriat, Jeff Beck, The Dells, Claudine Longet).

Wegens omstandigheden even een top20. Ik zal deze later deze week aanvullen tot een top 40.

Deze uitspraak past een beetje bij bovenstaande index. Wat laat, maar we moeten natuurlijk nog 11 restjes meenemen die door de deelnemers in 1966 zijn meegenomen (nr. 14, 21, 30, 40, 46, 49, 50, 51, 55, 57, 60).

En eigenlijk ook nog een restje uit 1965. Omdat de indexen al in 1965 begonnen zijn hoort "Why Am I Treated So Bad" nog tot dat jaar. Maar het nummer werd in mei 1967 herontdekt (mede door een uitvoering van Cannonbal Adderley) en eveneens opgenomen in de top 40 van Justus18 van juni.
Een ander voorbeeld in deze categorie is nr 43 van Roger Whitacker. Een nummer dat er maanden over doet om in de Nederlandse top 40 te komen. Weliswaar is de Engelse release opgenomen maar de single was ook al in 1966 in Nederland verkrijgbaar.

Waarom 71 deze keer? Omdat we daarmee op 2112 singletracks uitkomen voor 1966. Dat is deelbaar door 66 en daarmee kunnen we 32 indexen voor 1966 maken.
Maar of het mooi deelbaar blijft is de vraag. Er komt waarschijnlijk geen complete index 1966 meer. Er volgen hooguit nog wat restjes uit 1966 die door de deelnemers in 1967 opgenomen zijn.

Wat 1967 betreft, gaan we het nog inhalen. Toen we begonnen met 1967 liepen we 6 maanden achter.
Op 10 september begint het tweede kwartaal 1967 en lopen we nog 5 maanden achter. Op 29 oktober volgt het derde kwartaal en lopen we nog maar 3 maanden achter. En als we op 17 december met het laatste kwartaal van 1967 starten is de achterstand nog maar ruim een maand.

Wat zit er allemaal verder in bovenstaande index (1966-32*)?
Opvallend is de nr. 4 van the Drifters die een nieuwe jonge collega bij Atlantic lijken te verwelkomen die profetisch de meest succesvolle zangeres van 1967 voor Atlantic zou worden. Nr. 6 de vroegere groep van Patrick Campbell-Lyons die in 1967 Nirvana zou starten en nr. 47 de vroegere band van Gram Parsons.

Herman bedoelt met topic waarschijnlijk de gezamenlijke top 20 want er komen regelmatig liedjes uit Afrika voorbij.
Een paar daarvan zijn wat "minder zuiver". Zo heeft Roger Whitacker zowel een Brits als Keniaas paspoort (die dubbele paspoorten toch ook) en kwam in 1966 nr. 788 de blanke Zuid-Afrikaanse groep Des Lindberg voorbij. Minder zuiver omdat de folkinvloeden van deze groep duidelijk Anglo-Amerikaans zijn.
Maar uit Kenia zagen we in 1966 ook al nr. 1665 Daudi Kabaka & George Agade met Helule helule (in 1969 een hit voor the Tremeloes) en uit het tegenwoordige Benin komt:

Die A-kant ken ik niet en is inderdaad nog steeds nergens te vinden maar de B-kant (VI Man do Wingnan) staat al in index 1967-2.

In bovenstaande index (1966-32*) is uit Kongo opgenomen Franco TPOK Jazz (nr. 17) en uit de Centraal Afrikaanse republiek Orchestre Centrafrican-Jazz nrs. 12 en 42.
Twee landen die momenteel geteisterd worden door vreselijke burgeroorlogen.

'Picknick' is van het gelijknamige album van Boudewijn de Groot. Het Nederlandse antwoord op Sgt. Pepper van The Beatles en een zeer geslaagde. Hoewel er hier en daar wel wat gejat is, maar misschien moet ik het inspiratie noemen. De intro met de sitar is bijna een kopie van Within You Without You' en de cello's heb ik eerder gehoord op Eleanor Rigby en dan dat trompetgeschal, nou ja laat maar.........en luister eens naar die flower-power tekst.

Traffic scoort de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer met het flink psychedelische Hole In My Shoe. Een traag nummer met een surrealistische tekst over olifantsogen in de lucht en een tochtje op een albatros. Het nummer is traag, niet per se melodieus, maar desalniettemin op zijn minst intrigerend.

Twelve Thirty van The Mamas & The Papas staat ook wel te boek als hun laatste klassieke single. Hierna zou het al snel misgaan met de band. Jammer, want dit klinkt behoorlijk goed, net als de vorige singles. De Canyon in de titel slaat trouwens op Laurel Canyon, een buurt en kloof in de heuvels van Hollywood, Los Angeles. En dat was ook de plek waar Jim Morisson de inspiratie vond voor de tekst van People Are Strange, de eerste single van het tweede Doors-album. De titel en tekst slaat op het 'outsider' zijn van Morisson.

En dan geef ik bij deze het stokje over aan Justus, die vanaf komende week de weeklijst zal posten. Ik merkte dat de inspiratie en de tijd bij mij steeds minder werd, dus het is wel goed als iemand anders het overneemt.

Ik maak nog even mijn week 35 compleet.

Bedankt herman, uitstekend gedaan en in ieder geval was je voor mij heel inspirerend.

1967 biedt mij erg veel inspiratie. Bij sommige singletjes uit mijn lijst heb ik een persoonlijk verhaal. Deze week over de beste zanger van de wereld.

Het was ergens in 1975. Op een camping in de Costa Brava kijk ik op uitnodiging van een Spanjaard naar Barcelona - Real Madrid. Hij had ook twee Fransen uitgenodigd.

Ik begin met complimenten uit te delen naar beide ploegen. Om te beginnen Real. Dat viel niet in goede aarde. De Spanjaard blijkt een fanatieke Catalaan en ik moet begrijpen dat Real de slechtste ploeg op aarde is.
Nou, dat moet dan een makkie worden voor Barcelona, zei ik nog, maar ook dat had ik niet goed begrepen.
Uiteraard was ik de rest van de wedstrijd voor Barcelona maar dat was ook omdat Cruijff en Neeskens daar meespeelden. Het werd een bloedeloze 0-0.

Over de wedstrijd viel weinig na te praten dus al gauw hadden we het over muziek. De eerste Fransman begon over Tino Rossi. Ik had nog nooit van deze zanger gehoord en nu had ik het ook bij deze Fransman verbruid. Ik moest begrijpen dat Tino Rossi de beste zanger op aarde is.

De andere Fransman was het niet met zijn landgenoot eens. Jacques Brel was de beste zanger op aarde. Wat Cruijf was voor het voetbal was Brel voor de muziek.

De sfeer werd er niet beter op. Wat was eigenlijk de beste Nederlandse zanger? Want misschien konden we naast voetballen ook nog een beetje zingen?
Dat leek mij een mooie gelegenheid om het te hebben over de grootste Nederlandse bard, Boudewijn de Groot.

Totaal onbekend bij alle overige heren. Boudewijn? Baudouin le Grande? Le roi des Belges?
No?

Noem eens een nummer?
Picknick heren, 1967, zei ik. Picknick!

Helemaal eens met heicro. Boudewijn jatte van alles mee in zijn picknick mandje.

En omdat de taal een barrière is in dit geval besloot ik om deze muzikaal rijk gevulde openluchtmaaltijd te noemen als introductie op onze allerbeste zanger.

Die kende mijn Catalaanse gastheer dan weer wel. Pic-Nic. Geweldige groep uit 1967 Maar wel uit Barcelona! En met een lekkere zangeres. Callate niña (klik). Vrij vertaald: "Hou je mond, meisje".
Ik kende ze niet en zei niets. Ik had al eerder besloten mijn mond meer te houden om de sfeer niet verder te verslechteren.
Pic-nic had mijn Catalaanse gastheer op een cassettebandje opgenomen. En op dat bandje stond volgens hem ook de allergrootste zanger ter wereld. Ook uit Barcelona uiteraard.

Joan Manuel Serrat. Natuurlijk kende ik die.
En hij liet zijn beste liedje horen vanaf dat cassettebandje. La Tieta. In het Catalaans.

De rest van die avond waren we heel aardig voor elkaar zoals in Boudewijns Picknick. De sfeer bleef uitstekend, maar dat kan ook aan de Spaanse wijn gelegen hebben.

Jammer dat die Joan Manuel Serrat heel moeilijk in Nederland te krijgen is zei ik nog. Dus kreeg ik dat bandje na afloop mee. Cruijff naar Barcelona en Serrat naar Nederland zei mijn Catalaanse gastheer.

En nu meer dan 40 jaar later of eigenlijk minder dan 10 jaar eerder staat die nummer 31. Het mooiste Catalaanse liedje aller tijden wat mij betreft.

De bezemwagen loopt gelukkig weer op schema.

Over misschien wel de beste zangeres ter wereld maar daar kunnen de meningen ook behoorlijk over verschillen is ooit een fraaie biografie verschenen.

Meestal koop ik biografieën pas als de persoon in kwestie dood is maar in sommige gevallen maak ik graag een uitzondering.
Een vrouw die dol was op foute mannen en hamburgers maar misschien is dat wel een te weinig respectvolle introductie. Het boek is uiteraard vernoemd naar nr. 47 uit de lijst: Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin van David Ritz.

Het is eigenlijk niet te bevatten dat iemand zo lang zo mooi kan zingen. Misschien gewoon wel de beste song van de beste zangeres aller tijden.

Ook fijn is de Buffalo Springfield-cover door de Staple Singers. Lekker losjes en swingend met de handclaps. Heerlijke ontdekking van de afgelopen week, voorlopig hoor ik hem liever dan het origineel.

Net luisterde ik een album van de Walker Brothers en eigenlijk zit Gene Pitney in dezelfde melodramatische hoek. De laatste jaren heb ik best wat singletjes van hem gehoord, maar die waren bij elkaar niet half zo mooi als deze parel.

Slim Smith's Hip Hug is een zalige rocksteady-single uit Jamaica. Simpel, maar onweerstaanbaar. En wat een stem ook weer.

Hamilton Streetcar staat op een door Lee Hazelwood samengestelde verzamelaar, maar muzikaal is dit gewoon garagerock. En behoorlijk goede, want de Streetcar scheurt door de straten en heeft o.a. een killer-refrein.

Gettin' Hungry is voor Beach Boys begrippen wel een heel atypische en experimentele single door het stevige orgelritme, de stukken spoken word en de vreemde percussie. Toch vind ik het wel wat hebben.

Ok, maar hier moeten we wel iets over gaan afspreken, want anders lopen we met z'n allen stelselmatig een week achter. Eigenlijk zou een lijstje op zondag geplaatst moeten zijn. Door omstandigheden plaatsen mensen vaak pas maandag. Ik ben daar zelf ook schuldig aan. Op maandag ben ik regelmatig niet in staat om te tellen, zodat dinsdag de deadline werd. We moeten dat niet verder gaan oprekken.

Vanaf deze week neem ik het stokje over van herman, hoewel ik meer een teller dan een verteller ben. Aan de hoogste binnenkomer kleeft wel een verhaal. Ik vind Flowers In the Rain een zeer verdienstelijk liedje.
Onderin is het de afgelopen weken een komen en gaan van re-entrys. Soms zijn er 26 punten nodig voor een notering en soms volstaat 24, zoals deze week. Ook omdat onze lijstjes niet synchroon lopen, vallen sommige nummers er de ene week net buiten om er de volgende week weer in te staan. Maar dat zal niet het geval zijn met de tweede nieuwe binnenkomer, Aretha met een van haar mooiste nummers.

M'n favoriete singles in 1967 komen van The Rolling Stones. We Love You staat nu op een, ook al moet het onderdoen voor de magistrale singles Ruby Tuesday (januari) en She's A Rainbow (december). Voor mij zijn die 2 laatste nummers het beste wat de Stones ooit hebben uitgebracht. Zelf heb ik nog nooit naar Between The Buttons en Their Satanic Majesties Request beluisterd, maar het valt me op dat ze beiden matige scores hebben op MusicMeter.

Slechts één hit had Bobbie Gentry en die was van de buitencategorie.....'Ode to Billie Joe'. Ondanks een zestal prima albums kon ze dit kunststukje niet meer herhalen. Na 12 jaar gaf ze er de brui aan. Ze besloot zich terug te trekken in de anonimiteit. Pogingen van beroemde artiesten om haar over te halen om duetten te zingen mislukten.
Ik kan het me wel voorstellen waarom ze er de brui aangaf, want het verbaast mij echt dat de opvolger van 'Ode to Billie Joe' niets deed in de hitlijsten. Ik vind het namelijk een juweeltje.
'I Saw an Angel Die' is de hoogste binnenkomer. Bij deze: Een Ode aan Bobbie Gentry.

Misschien wel hun beste single van de sixties. 'King Midas In Reverse' was een doelbewuste poging van bandlid en schrijver Graham Nash om met het nummer ​​meer volwassen te klinken.
Tot dan toe waren de liedjes van The Hollies qua samenzang bijna niet te overtreffen, maar ze waren ook vrij eenvoudig en vooral prettig in het gehoor. Met een grote hitpotentie dus.
Het iets complexere 'King Midas In Reserve' werd, je raadt het al, minder goed ontvangen door het grote publiek. Tegelijkertijd was dit de frustratie van Nash. Niet lang daarna verliet hij The Hollies om te gaan samenwerken met David Crosby en Stephen Stills.

Afgezien van natuurlijk Aretha een mager weekje qua nieuwkomers. De onderste 3 stonden al langer op mijn tiplijstje.
De Bee Gees komen met Massachusetts. Amerikaanse palingsound, maar prima.
De rocksteady-tips van herman kan ik zeer waarderen. Hip Hug is er daar een van. The Jamaicans staan bij mij deze week zelfs op 4. Eerder hadden we ook al The Valentines die met hun (Gun Fever) Blam Blam Fever 10 weken in mijn lijstje stonden met als hoogste notering plek 6 [nummer 24 in de index 1967-8 van Marzipaintree moet dus met * worden vermeld].
