Geen spectaculaire veranderingen, maar wel wat leuke nieuwe binnenkomers. Een prachtig duet van Marvin en Tammi, de vroege hardrock van Iron Butterfly en een instrumentale en flink swingende cover van een James Brown-nummer.

Verrassend voor mij zijn de binnenkomst van Lowland Trio, een nummer dat ik de afgelopen weken steeds leuker ben gaan vinden. Geschreven door Peter Koelewijn. Muzikaal kwam het me bekend voor, maar ik lees nu op Wikipedia dat dat waarschijnlijk komt omdat het erg op Dancing Shoes van Cliff Richard lijkt. Daar staat ook dat het een hit was in de Parool Top 20, een hitlijst waar ik nog niet eerder van gehoord had.

The Lemon Fog is ook een ontdekking: Summer is een prima psychplaat.

Weinig binnenkomers deze week. Er is er wel eentje die direct in mijn TOP20 terecht komt, wat bij mij zelden voorkomt. Het gaat dan ook om een nummer van een favoriet album. Family - Music in a Doll's House kent geen enkele echte uitschieter (of het moet The Chase zijn), maar er staat geen slecht nummer op (de variations even buiten beschouwing latend). Wat zeg ik? Alle nummers van het album zouden hoog in mijn TOP40 kunnen staan.
Ik wist niet dat er ook iets op single is uitgebracht. Ik weet dat nu wel en ik krijg hetzelfde probleem als bij Leonard Cohen. De B-kant van Me My Friend vind ik beter en dan is er ook nog Old Songs for New Songs met dezelfde B-kant.

Daar heb ik in het verleden regelmatig over geschreven in dit topic.
Nog even wat oude quotjes om het geheugen op te frissen.

Geweldig! Een pleidooi voor de betere B-kant.

nr. 19. Waarom moet ik nu aan vigil denken?
Omdat ik ooit een heerlijke discussie met hem had over B-kanten in een ander topic?
Nee. Mijn hoogste binnenkomer van the Easybeats brengt twee tracks van het album "Vigil" op single uit. En eigenlijk staat er geen slecht nummer op dat album om Justus18 wederom te citeren.
En deze single heeft geen B-kant. Ze maken er meteen twee A-kanten van in Australië.

nr. 20. Hier vind ik de A-kant ongeveer net zo goed als de B-kant. De B-kant werd later door Tod Rundgren in een andere legendarische versie opnieuw uitgebracht.

nr. 23 Bij deze wint de A-kant het van de niet onaardige B-kant. Op de A-kant kun je ervaren wat een enorm grote zanger dit was. Het album waar deze nummers op staan staat nr. 3 in de toplijst van 1968 en laat zelfs Astral Weeks van Van Morrison achter zich. Dat laatste begrijp ik niet maar het is wel een topalbum.

nr. 24 Hier ga ik overduidelijk voor de swingende A-kant. Op de B-kant klinken ze net iets te volwassen, over hun houdbaarheidsdatum heen. Die jongens laten sinds 1968 niet voor niets hun bijvoeglijke naamwoord "Young" weg.

nr. 26. Ook een geweldige zanger met wat mij betreft zijn beste single. En weer een ijzersterke A- en B-kant. Top-Americana!
nr. 27. Ook hier ontlopen A-kant en B-kant elkaar nauwelijks.
nr. 37. De B-kant is een aardig stukje psychedelische reggae. Het springt alle kanten op.
nr. 38. Neil bewijst met deze single dat de jaren 60 zijn beste decennium was. Beide zijdes swingen.

Geweldig! Een pleidooi voor LP-tracks uit een onverwachte hoek.
Eigenlijk hadden herman en Justus nr. 17 uit de index gewoon in hun top 40 moeten houden.
Maar laat ik niet weer een pleidooi beginnen voor LP-tracks in onze top 40. Tenzij we er nieuwe users mee binnen halen.

Maar of dat gaat lukken met nr. 26? Ergens eind jaren 70 hoorde ik deze voor het eerst op de VPRO-radio en die benoemden het de slechtste plaat aller tijden.

Toch benieuwd wat herman er van vindt. David Bowie vond deze plaat geweldig. Volgens sommige bronnen op het internet was deze single een inspiratiebron voor Ziggy Stardust. Toch verwacht ik deze niet in hermans lijstje.

Ook benieuwd wat Justus18 er van vindt. Hier sluit ik niet uit dat ik hem binnen enkele weken nog zie binnenkomen in zijn lijstje.

En zo slecht is die nou ook weer niet. In ieder geval heeft Toby Creswell het nummer opgenomen in zijn boek The Greatest Songs of Our Time.

Hoogste binnenkomer Linda Lyndell belandde na de release van dit nummer in een Amerikaanse variant van de Klaas-Piet discussie. Na bedreigingen staakte ze haar carrière om pas na de cover van Salt-n-Pepa weer op te treden.

De Klaas-Piet discussie? Bedoel je "Zwarte Piet" discussie? Of staat die "Witte Klaas" ook al ter discussie?
Laat ik dan maar "zeer ontoepasselijk" voor de tijd van het jaar een Sinterklaas gedicht maken op het nummertje van Yves Montand - La Bicyclette over een andere "onderdrukte" bevolkingsgroep:

Dit is voor mij een topper die ik al jaren ken. Waarom staat die dan nog niet in mijn lijstje?
Bij de Amerikaanse releases maak ik o.a. gebruik van de tijdschriften Cash box en Billboard Magazine uit 1968. Volgens die tijdschriften kwam "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" precies 50 jaar geleden uit maar komt pas volgende week binnen omdat mijn huidige lijstje van 27 juli 1968 is.
Ook Aretha Franklin en "Say A Little Prayer" zal de top 20 bij mij halen. Deze komt pas nieuw binnen in mijn lijstje van 10 augustus 1968.

De fysieke single is dus voor mij belangrijk in 1968. Zowel "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" als "Say A Little Prayer" zijn als albumtracks al wel eerder bekend, ze staan op albums die al in juni 1968 uitkwamen.
Een verschil van een paar weken is ook niet groot. Bobbie Gentry en Hushabye Mountain kan ik echter niet eerder dateren dan begin oktober 1968. En dat is wel een groot verschil.

Misschien is het interessant te melden dat de vorige single van Iron Butterfly ook de moeite waard is. Het gaat hierbij om twee tracks van het album "Heavy". Het album kwam al uit in januari 1968 en wordt voor het eerst genoemd in het Billboard Magazine van 27 januari 1968. Het heeft ook een hogere waardering momenteel op Musicmeter dan het album " In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" alhoewel die laatste wel meer dan 7 keer zoveel stemmen heeft.
De twee meest favoriete tracks op musicmeter van "Heavy" zijn op één single uitgebracht, nr. 17 en nr. 24.

Die omstandigheden zijn nog steeds van toepassing, zodat ik mij ook deze week beperk tot een TOP20.

De hoogste binnenkomer reikte in 1968 niet hoger dan de bubbling under plek 113 in de HOT 100. Dankzij de film uit bovenstaande clip bereikte het een jaar later alsnog #6. Dat Fred Neil het origineel op zijn naam heeft staan heeft Marzipaintree al eerder opgemerkt.

De nieuwkomers:
Nr. 6
Ga naar een kathedraal. Dus niet een roltrap, dit keer herman van één of ander heilig station.
Maar neem de trap naar het bovenste balkon van een kathedraal. In de middeleeuwen waanden bezoekers van kathedralen zich in het paradijs. Ze kwamen er in contact met God.
Pak daar de bijbel en lees de eerste drie hoofdstukken van het eerste boek Genesis. Dat kost maar ongeveer 17 minuten. Het verhaal over de mensen in het hof van Eden. Toen men zich nog niet schaamde voor elkaars naaktheid en de mensen nog niet wisten van goed of kwaad.

Maar om het Hof van Eden echt goed te ervaren is de versie van 17 minuten beter. Het hoort uiteraard niet in dit topic want je luistert naar een LP-track en dat is hier eigenlijk vloeken in de kerk. Maar waarom zou je de gevarieerde drumsolo en het orgelspel willen missen die beiden een balans zoeken tussen opzwependheid en sereniteit?
Het getal 17 brengt bovendien volgens de getallensymboliek van de bijbel de aanwezigheid van God tot uitdrukking. In dit geval symboliseert het Gods aanwezigheid bij het bijeenbrengen van de 'kinderen van God'. Ook dat is allemaal wetenschappelijk vastgelegd.
En the Simpsons hebben het goed begrepen. Dit is de ultieme hymn. Jammer dat er op 1 minuut 14 de 17 minuten alweer voorbij zijn.
Nr.13
Het evangelie (want dat betekent goede boodschap) kunnen we dit keer ook aan the Bee Gees overlaten. Ze halen er dan ook meteen een "preacher" bij.

Het gospelachtige nummer dat ook verscheen op de gelijknamige compilatie-LP. Twaalf nummers die als apostels moesten dienen om het geluid van hemelse bands bij een breder publiek te evangeliseren.

De Local Gentry sessions waren volgens wikipedia van 10 mei tot en met 20 juli 1968.

Dan gaan we naar de goed geinformeerde site van countrydiscography waar we lezen dat die in juni 1968 is opgenomen.

Kortom:
op rateyourmusic hebben ze de opnamemaand genomen i.p.v. de releasemaand.
Uiteindelijk zetten ze er dan ook nog een leuk Frans hoesje bij uit 1969.

Ik houd nog net mijn belofte dat Paralyzed binnen zou komen, maar de single valt me erg tegen. De live versie die ik heb lijkt (van wat ik op YT gevonden heb) het meest op deze versie. Na herhaaldelijk draaien ben ik wat meer gewend aan de single. Ik dacht even dat die mogelijk zou stijgen, maar na het horen van allerlei tips weet ik dat niet meer.
Wat te denken van de nieuwkomer op #100 in de HOT100: Flavor - Sally Had A Party? Horen we daar niet een uptempo "Under Pressure" gemixt met een melodie van "Crosseyed and Painless" op keyboards? Het is jammer dat ze er bij zingen, maar de instrumentale stukjes zijn geweldig.

Weinig verversing door de vakantieperiode, volgende week hoop ik weer wat meer tips te kunnen beluisteren.

Hoogste nieuwe is van Serge Gainsbourg. Ik wist niet dat dit een single was geweest, maar ik kwam het tegen in een Franse hitlijst, dus dan mag 'ie ook wel in mijn hitlijst. Geweldig nummer dat nog wel even mee zal draaien.

Caetano Veloso haalt alsnog mijn lijst, na eerder al een maandje in mijn tiplijst te hebben gestaan. Het nummer zat de afgelopen week erg in mijn hoofd, dus een herkansing was op zijn plaats.

Verder nog een bekende 60s klassieker van The Band.

Even reageren op herman zijn binnenkomers:
Deze klassieker staat bij mij op 8 augustus. Als die van voor 4 augustus zou zijn dan had ik die zeer hoog laten binnenkomen en zou die geheel in mijn religieuze betoog van afgelopen week passen.
Maar dan was ik een weekje te vroeg.

Altijd mooi als ook zo'n rondje van de zaak meerdere rondjes mee mag draaien.
Ook al komt die dan uiteindelijk een maandje later.

herman had kunnen weten dat het een single was geweest.
Alleen zat Marzi op 1 oktober 2017/1967 (weer eens) te knoeien.
Ik was een jaartje te vroeg.
