Volgens mij komt die begin december uit met een aantal andere versies (o.a. Frida Boccara), ook naar aanleiding van de film L'Affaire Thomas Crown. Die film kwam in Frankrijk al in oktober uit en omdat de muziek van Michel Legrand is, beschouwen de Fransen het origineel uiteraard ook als Frans.

Het is eigenlijk van Mozart. Het is een variatie op het Andante van het Sinfonia Concertante KV. 364 uit 1779. . In het Andante hoor je een prachtige steeds intensievere dialoog tussen viool en altviool. Hiervan zegt de Franse Wikipedia dat Mozart zijn inspiratie deels in Parijs moet hebben opgedaan omdat hij er net vandaan kwam en het Concertante als vorm daar zo populair was. Maar dat lees ik alleen in de Franse bronnen.

Een man die zich zeker irriteerde aan het Franse chauvinisme was Bruno Frascone, gitarist van Les Goths. Volgens Bruno hielden zijn collega's op het werk in de fabriek alleen maar van Sheila, France Gall, Françoise Hardy (vooral in een minirok) en allerlei andere Franse commerciële muziek. En toen ze als muzikanten in Parijs verzeild raakten werden ze uitsluitend als een stelletje provincialen gezien. In ieder geval vond men ze muzikaal veel te Amerikaans klinken. Inderdaad Jimi Hendrix. En dus werden ze nauwelijks gedraaid in Frankrijk.
En een naam die refereerde naar de Gothen was ook al niet zo lekker gekozen. Je kan wel een invasie in Frankrijk willen veroorzaken maar niet met een naam die refereert naar een Duits volk (lees Asterix et les Goths er ook maar eens op na).

Overigens een prachtige vondst van heicro die zeker mijn lijstje gaat halen maar....
De single werd in de zomer van 1968 opgenomen maar later uitgebracht.
Diverse bronnen Discogs (klik), 45cat (klik) maar ook de Franse Encyclope-disque. dateren de releasedatum van deze single op 1969. Op basis van de (nieuwe) labeling van Odeon in 1969 ben ik het daarmee mee eens. Kijk ik naar de omliggende singles in deze labeling dan dateer ik de single op maart 1969.

Er is nog een voorbeeld van een schijf dat in 1968 opgenomen werd en in 1969 werd uitgebracht. Alleen deze is enigszins off topic. In de albumlijst van 1968 staat hoog genoteerd "C'era Una Volta Il West" van Ennio Morricone.
Op musicmeter wordt het album op 1968 gezet en haalt een zeer hoge positie in de jaarlijst. Maar ook hier denk ik dat het album van 1969 is.

Veel nummers die in de Nederlandse top 40 groot waren in 1968 scoren bij mij matig.

Ik ben meer een man van de Allegro's, maar dit is een mooie Andante.

De deadline is inmiddels verstreken, maar het regent tips. Ik kan me voorstellen dat het daardoor wat langer duurt. Ik plak er 24 uur aan vast.

Een redelijk onverwachte nummer 1, maar het nummer haalt bij alle 3 de deelnemers de TOP10. Voor de rest is het verdeeldheid troef. Op 15 staat de hoogste binnenkomer dankzij een nummer 4-notering bij Marzipaintree. In potentie een aardig nummer, maar ik denk dat Aphrodite's Child dit beter had gedaan. Vandaag heb ik ook maar eens het B-kantje beluisterd. Dat pakte me gelijk, hoewel ik me voor kan stellen dat je denkt dat The Band dit beter had gedaan. Die komen met een klassieker (die nog wel verder zal stijgen) ook binnen samen met een wat mij betreft volslagen uit het lood gearrangeerde Initials B.B.

Als je jaar in jaar uit bezig bent muziek van 50 jaar geleden is het onvermijdelijk dat er eens een artiest overlijdt waar je graag naar geluisterd hebt. Meestal veer ik er niet heel erg van op, maar ben ik blij dat ik ze nog bij leven heb ontdekt. Maar Aretha is toch wel een ander verhaal, want zij is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een grote favoriet, vooral dankzij dit topic (en de voorganger). Ain't No Way behoort in mijn 60s-muziek universum tot een van de allergrootste hits uit deze tijd. En knap ook dat ze nog zo lang zo goed bij stem bleef. Gelukkig kunnen we haar muziek de komende jaren nog blijven draaien.

Aretha (R.I.P.) maakt een sprong, maar het is niet genoeg om op 1 te komen. Die plek is weggelegd voor The Who. Als liefhebber vind ik dat natuurlijk leuk. Gek genoeg krijgt The Who nog de meeste punten van zelfverklaarde niet-liefhebber herman.
De hoogste binnenkomer is van Boudewijn. Het B-kantje staat in de MuMe TOP2000. Het A-kantje mag er ook zijn, hoewel ik het enigszins vergelijkbare Het Spaarne veel beter vind.

Ik vraag niet welk nummer ze beter zouden doen. Dat geef je zelf dubbel al aan met nr. 15 in de weeklijst en nr. 4 bij mij.

Ik vind zowel voorgrond- als achtergrondzang van de Bee Gees bij dit nummer niet geweldig. Ook het arrangement kan beter. Dat schelle fluitje is zelfs irritant. De compositie is prima, maar het nummer past wat mij betreft beter bij de "sound" van Aphrohodite's Child.

Nieuw op 29 Jeannie C. Riley, die met haar versie van Harper Valley PTA 50 jaar geleden binnenkomt in de HOT100. Het origineel komt bij mij binnen op 24. Volgens Rypens heeft Margie de schrijver van het nummer, Tom Hall, gevraagd om een soort nummer te schrijven als Ode To Billie Joe. Dat is goed te horen en Ode To Billie Joe is voor mij een grote ontdekking in dit topic geweest.
Saillant detail: het nummer van Margie Singleton is geproduceerd door haar nieuwe echtgenoot Leon Ashley, terwijl haar ex, Shelby Singleton, de producer was van de versie van Jeannie C. Riley.

Nieuw op 29 Don Fardon met (The Lament Of the Cherokee) Indian Reservation. Het nummer stond al in index 1967-24 met als releasedatum 11-11-1967. 45cat geeft als datum 3-11-1967, maar daar wordt ook gesteld dat het nummer pas in 1968 officieel is uitgebracht. Rypens geeft 1968 als releasejaar. Uit 1967 komt volgens hem een versie van de Lewis And Clark Expedition, maar die kan ik niet vinden. Wel op YT staat Marvin Rainwater - The Pale Faced Indian, het origineel uit 1959 (tip voor de 50smeter van herman).
Nieuw op 36 staat ook een cover. Ik ben totaal geen liefhebber van Frank Sinatra, maar My Way Of Life vind ik een mooi nummer. En beter dan het mierzoete origineel van Bert Kaempfert.

Omdat het afwisselend door Robin en Barry Gibb in de voorgrond gezongen wordt was ik toch wel benieuwd hoe Vangelis het er met Demis vanaf had gebracht.
Zelf heb ik moeite met de stem van Demis maar dat komt waarschijnlijk vooral omdat hij vanaf de jaren 70 te veel verkeerde Duitse schlagers gezongen heeft.
Dat schelle fluitje (volgens mij komt het van de mellotron) ben ik in de loop der jaren steeds minder gaan horen. Doofheid komt met de jaren vrees ik.

- Inderdaad kun je ook op je 18e best melancholisch zijn, maar dit liedje voelt ouder dan het is. Daarom is het wel apart dat het door zo'n jonge zangeres wordt gezongen. Maar ik hoor het graag.
- Het nummer van Nancy Priddy is een ontdekking. Het is ook niet een heel bekende zangeres, destijds heeft ze maar één album uitgebracht en dat was het dan. Verder wel een heel fijn liedje. En naar ik nu ontdek is zij de moeder van Christina Applegate, toch wel een grappig trivium.
- Allen Toussaint is een grote naam uit vooral de 70s, waar ik me nooit echt in heb verdiept. Deze vroege single vind ik nochtans wel erg fijn. Lekkere lome soul uit New Orleans.
- The Staple Singers' Long Walk To D.C. is lekker opgeruimde soul zonder complexen. Fijne sound hebben zij toch.
- Tyrannosaurus Rex lijkt flink op Debora, de voorganger. Toffe band toch ook, door de jaren heen.

Grappig om te horen! Al bijna 100 jaar oud dus...

Ik had als hoogste binnenkomer de straatvechters van The Rolling Stones verwacht, maar Pink Floyd gaat er deze week met die eer vandoor. Dat is mede dankzij het opmerkelijke trackrecord van The Rolling Stones bij herman, die na binnenkomst op 16 direct een plekje moeten inleveren.
In mijn eigen lijstjes ben ik erg voorzichtig met het direct in de TOP20 opnemen van een nummer. Zowel The Beatles als The Stones zullen daar volgende week wel in staan.

Inderdaad opmerkelijk, maar omdat ik het nummer al heel goed ken heeft het niet echt een groeiperiode nodig. En voor mij is het ook niet een van hun sterkste nummers: het heeft een overweldigend intro, maar voor mijn gevoel gebeurt er daarna eigenlijk niet heel veel meer.

Het is in ieder geval lang geen Jumpin' Jack Flash of Gimme Shelter.
