- Jimi Hendrix: fantastisch nummer met een geweldige gitaarsolo. Genieten.
- Otis Redding: een van de nummers van het album The Immortal Otis Redding, dat hij opnam in de weken voor zijn dood. Voor mij een van zijn mooiste nummers. Zo schitterend gezongen...
- Gladys Knight: mijn collega die nog nooit iets over muziek had gezegd, verraste me laatst door te zeggen dat ze Gladys Knight eigenlijk net zo'n grote zangeres vond als Aretha Franklin. Dat weet ik niet, maar ze heeft wel veel mooie singles uitgebracht in de jaren '60 (al ontstegen die tot nu toe niet echt het standaard soul-/Motown-idioom. Toch is dit ook wel weer een erg mooi liedje.
- Dr. John: vind ik eigenlijk meer een albumtrack, maar er is vast ook een single edit. Geweldige muziek van een van mijn favoriete albums uit 1968. En qua sound ook heel anders dan de rest van mijn lijstje.
- Big Brother: Janis Joplin, van haar stem moet je houden. Het is in ieder geval uit het hart, maar ik vind het origineel van Erma Franklin toch wel mooier geloof ik.

De albumtrack zou mijn lijstje niet gehaald hebben. De single komt bij mij binnen op 33.

Het is me redelijk om het even, maar uiteraard houd ik het dan voor dit topic bij de single-versie.

Even wat zaken ter rectificatie of aanvulling:

1) 11-nov in de index betekent niet meer dan de 11e maand van het jaar en nov inderdaad november. Het is een pleonasme en ik kan daar beter mee sorteren dan met een datumformaat. Het verklaart ook waarom 10-okt niet 10 oktober is, en 09 sep niet 9 september, etc.

2) Don Fardon is, volgens mij ook volgens 45cat, officieel al uitgebracht in 1967. Maar alleen in de U.K. In 1968 wordt het wereldwijd uitgebracht en proberen ze het ook opnieuw in Engeland. En ze proberen het in Engeland ook weer in 1970.
Driemaal scheepsrecht. Toen werd het daar pas een hit.

3) The Lewis and Clarke expedition namen het op als onderdeel van hun slotstuk "the Memorial To The American Indian" op hun enige studioalbum. Er zijn inderdaad op internet nauwelijks opnames van te vinden en wellicht is het ook een verklaring voor het feit dat niemand nog een stem heeft geplaatst bij dit album op Musicmeter.

4) Rypens geeft 1968 als releasejaar? Rypens is niet altijd consequent en zou erbij moeten zetten wat hij hanteert: opnamejaar, releasejaar, opusjaar (bladmuziek), compositiejaar, etc. De ene keer gebruikt hij opnamejaar en is die ook leidend. Dan gebruikt hij weer jaar van compositie zoals hier bij Beethoven, 1898. Waarom hier niet het opus-jaar, 1899? Of het jaar van uitvoering? Maar als je iets anders doet, zet het er dan in ieder geval bij.
Extreem is Albinoni.. Eigenlijk zou hier 1948 moeten staan bij Remo Giazotto maar ook hier kiest Rypens zonder het goed te vermelden voor het jaar van (her)compositie. Daarbij geeft hij toe dat er zo'n enorm verschil tussen het origineel en de bewerking zit dat je het verschil niet meer hoort.
Marvin Rainwater is weer een mooi voorbeeld van dat Rypens het opnamejaar bedoelt: dat is namelijk 1959. Maar het releasejaar is 1960.

Jimi komt natuurlijk hoog binnen, maar voor een rechtstreekse TOP20-positie vind ik het nummer net niet sterk genoeg. Elvis komt met het prachtige B-kantje ook hoog binnen. Op 30 en 31 een Katz(e) Circus en een Harlekijn. U herkent mijn voorkeuren: ho-ho-ha-ha-hi-hi. Nieuw op 35 staat de tip van Marzipaintree voor herman. Ondanks de geweldige titel haalt het nummer van Gordon Lightfoot mijn TOP40 niet, maar ik sluit niet uit dat die het alsnog zal halen. Het lijkt me een groeiplaatje.
Wat mijn TOP40 zeker niet zal halen is Vince Edwards met Aquarius/Hair. Ik schrok me een ongeluk toen ik zijn versies hoorde. Mijn ouders hadden niet veel muziek, maar zij hadden wel de LP met "Die einzige Original-Broadway Aufnahme" (RCA/Victor). Ik draaide die heel veel en ik heb het album nu in mijn bezit.
De versie van Hair op die plaat is veruit de beste versie (ook beter dan Zen). Uitvoerenden zouden James Rado, Gerome Ragni & Company zijn. Rypens stelt dat dit de "Off Broadway versie" is en geeft Walker Daniels In plaats van James Rado als originele zanger. Ik heb geen idee wat hiervan wel en niet klopt. Beste nummer van de plaat/musical: Frank Mills.

- Cream - White Room komt in de VS al op single uit, thuisland VK moet nog even wachten. Ben geen enorme Cream-fan, maar dit vind ik wel een lekker nummer. Laatst kwam ik overigens een discoversie tegen van Sunshine Of Your Love tegen, ook wel leuk om eens te horen:

- Beatles: ik zag dat Revolution separaat binnenkwam in de Hot 100 van Billboard, dus van mag dat ook best in mijn top 40. Je kan nooit teveel Beatles in je lijst hebben.
- Bob Luman was de tip van Marzipaintree en die viel meteen goed en om de volgende regel moest ik wel lachen: "Some guys like chains, but I like trains, no woman's holdin' me." Zo erg is het bij mij overigens niet.
- The Hollies: leuk liedje van deze hitfabriek uit de jaren '60; ik zou eigenlijk eens een verzamelaartje van ze moeten maken.
- Keith & Tex: qua tekst een beetje de rocksteady-variant op Gary Pucket's Young Girl, inmiddels een beetje fout. Maar muzikaal is het wel erg lekker en de stemmen vind ik ook fijn om naar te luisteren.

Helaas moet ik ook nog een weekje wachten.

Sorry dat ik je zo heb laten schrikken. Ik schrok zelf deze week ook van dit nummer. Geen idee onder invloed van welke middelen ik het vorige week in mijn top 40 heb binnengelaten maar goed beluisterd heb ik hem zeker niet. En daarmee is dit stuk ongeluk de grootste zakker aller tijden in mijn lijst na binnenkomst vorige week.

Wat (weer) niet klopt bij Rypens is het jaartal. De "Off Broadway versie" is al van 1967. Opgenomen in oktober en uitgebracht in december 1967 (ook diverse keren dat jaar genoemd in Billboard Magazine).
De originele Broadway Cast Recording dateert uit mei 1968 en is in juli 1968 uitgebracht. Singles van dit album worden pas in 1969 uitgebracht.
En nu in september 1968 volgen diverse singles door andere artiesten. Deze week komt Carla Thomas binnen op nr. 45 bij mij. En volgende week zal een andere zangeres bij mij nog meer succes hebben met deze musical.

Van de hoogste binnenkomer het plaatje van de B-kant, wat niet geheel toevallig ook de B-kant van het plaatje is. Ik vind het beter dan de A-kant en het heeft een leuke titel als je het betrekt op de worsteling van herman met Hey Jude/Revolution.

En 6 jaar geleden:

Grappig dat je het weer bovenhaalt. Ik wist nog wel dat ik destijds in eerste instantie de andere kant van de single in mijn lijst had gezet.

Het scheelt dat ik nu een lijstje heb van 40 i.p.v. 15 nummers. En ik moet zeggen dat ik Hey Jude ook wel leuker ben gaan vinden in die 6 jaar.

In mijn beleving is het nummer erg goed als je het een tijd niet gehoord hebt. Dan gaat het nog 2 keer mee, maar het is inmiddels de vierde week. Gelukkig hebben we dan het B-kantje nog. Misschien als nummer net iets minder, maar ik kan er vaker naar luisteren. Bij het afluisteren van mijn TOP40 heb ik vandaag dus maar het B-kantje opgezet.
Dat heb ik ook gedaan bij de nieuwkomers op 31, 34 en 38, waarvan ik de B-kant sterker vind dan de A-kant.
Wat ik vroeger niet kon waarderen was een genre dat ik "soft-soul" noem. Ik kan dat nu beter. Op 36 staat er een mooi voorbeeld van.
Gordon Lightfoot komt alsnog binnen net boven Tomboy van Ronnie Dove. De voorganger Mountain of Love was in de US een grotere hit, maar bleef bij mij in de tiplijst steken. Tomboy is een mierzoete country-ballad compleet met trillende stem, melancholische violen en vrouwenkoor. Edel-kitsch!

Dat heb ik bij deze nummers precies zo.
Soms noem ik de B-kant ook als ik deze bijna net zo sterk vind als de A-kant of als ik deze ook top40-waardig vind.

Ook mijn nr. 40 heeft een duidelijk sterkere B-kant. Ook hier weer, net als vorige week en de week daarvoor aandacht voor Rypens Originals.
Volgens Rypens is dit een cover uit 1968. Dat jaar klopt wat de single betreft, maar de LP waar het op staat (The Windows of the World) is al uit augustus 1967. Dus qua release zou ik deze eerder noemen.
En eigenlijk is het een demo uit 1963 die nu op LP en single is gezet. Rypens vermeldt Lou Johnson als origineel uit 1964. Maar als we de volgorde van opname hanteren (en dat gebruikt Rypens zelf heel vaak als stelregel) is niet Lou Johnson maar Dionne Warwick het origineel.

Fijn om Nina Simone - Ain't Go No - I Got Life hier op te kunnen pikken. Voor mij een van de ultieme feelgood-songs. Als het even wat minder gaat, kun je altijd teruggrijpen op dit nummer.

Verder is Weather Forecast gaat over liefdesverdriet, maar het is ook wel lekker toepasselijk voor de tijd van het jaar:
"cold wind blowing, around my brain / from this day on, it's gonna rain"
Gelukkig zal bij ons in tegenstelling tot het liedje de zon wel weer een keer gaan schijnen.


Ik luister altijd alle nummers, maar verder kan ik me perfect vinden in je analyse. Hey Jude zakt bij mij vanaf nu waarschijnlijk snel weg.


Uitgerekend bij Dutronc heb ik vooral de b-kant beluisterd, maar die viel me niet mee. De a-kant zou nog wel eens binnen kunnen komen. Van The Byrds vind ik de a-kant ook leuker, maar de b-kant was een leuke verrassing. Ik zal hem eens laten horen aan de Floyd in mijn vriendenkring. Vooral blijven noemen dus die b-kanten...

Even iets in de groep gooien:

Hebben jullie een idee wanneer Francoise Hardy's Comment Te Dire Adieu is uitgekomen? Ik kan het zo snel niet vinden... Staat in week 10 van 1969 in de Nederlandse hitparade, maar ik zou denken dat het in Frankrijk al eerder een single is geweest.

Deze heb ik momenteel staan tussen 29 november 1968 en 6 december 1968. Ik heb er geen probleem mee als je traditiegetrouw een weekje vroeger zit.

De EP komt volgens de Franse wikipedia in december 1968 uit.
De Waalse chartpagina noteert deze EP al in november 1968.
Op basis van de labeling van Vogue voor de EP vermoed ik dat die op maandag 1 december 1968 uitkwam.

De single kwam traditiegetrouw ongeveer 3 weken later uit.
De Waalse top noteert de single al op 28 december 1968.
De Franse hitparade noteert de single pas in februari maar ik vermoed dat die daar ook al eerder (rond 21 december 1968) uitkwam. Ze maken op deze site nota bene gebruik van het onvolledige en achterlopende Billboard magazine Hits of the World.

Voor het plaatje van de hoogste binnenkomer heb ik wederom gekozen voor het B-kantje. Daarover geen praatje.
Met slechts 1 puntje minder komt Nina (door de ex aequo's) 3 plekken lager binnen. Het betreft een cover van 2 nummers uit Hair: Ain't Got No, waarop in de musical het nummer Air perfect aansluit, en I Got Life, dat pas veel later gezongen wordt. De links die ik geplaatst heb zijn niet identiek aan de LP-versie die ik ken, maar dit is zo'n jeugdsentiment. Nina kan daar wat mij betreft niet aan tippen. En na Ain't Got No moet Air volgen [uche, uche, uche], want I Got Hair.

Best een oude lijst deze week, met veel nummers die 10 weken of langer genoteerd staan.

Hoogste nieuwe is van Joe Cocker, die het Beatles-nummer volledig naar zijn hand zet. Van wat ik ken van Joe Cocker vind ik dit toch wel zijn beste nummer. En ook zeker een van de beste covers van een Beatles-nummer.

Het nummer van de Cryan' Shames is een lekker ruig psychedelisch nummer waarin best veel gebeurd voor de 2 minuten die het duurt. Het doet me een beetje denken aan Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club-band (het nummer), maar dan steviger.

Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride is erg catchy en zeker een leuk nummer, al vind ik het fade-out-einde altijd wel een beetje zwaktebod.

Love Child is een van de zoveelste mooie liedjes van Diana Ross en haar Supremes. Nouja, Supremes. Eigenlijk gewoon Diana Ross en The Andantes die als studiozangeres fungeerden.

Het nummer van Chicken Shack is een fijne bluesballad met de mooie stem van Christine McVie.

Best een nieuwe lijst deze week, met veel nummers die 9 weken of minder genoteerd staan.

Hoogste positie is voor Jackie Lomax, die een fraaie cover van een Beatles-nummer maakt.

En voor de rest sluit ik mij grotendeels bij herman aan.

Ik kan me voorstellen dat je dat niet leuk vindt, maar het lijkt me iets te ver gaan om in je TOP40 geen nummer 18 meer op te nemen.

Het wordt tijd voor een Marzipaintree 2.0 zo te zien.

Alles schuift een plekje op. Ik had mijn nieuwkomers stuk voor stuk deze week willen vergelijken met de uitvallers.
Maar na een leuke vergelijking tussen de "See-saw" van de Moody Blues met die van Aretha Franklin werd daarna alles een beetje te flauw.
In ieder geval was ik er dan wel eerder achter gekomen dat die aantallen niet klopten. Want dan had ik in totaal 18 nummertjes met elkaar moeten vergelijken.

Als ik geen inspiratie heb, laat ik een toelichting achterwege. Dat heb ik deze week ook gedaan.

De enige en derhalve ook hoogste binnenkomer is van de eerste "supergroep" Cream. De "" plaats ik niet voor niets. Bruce & Baker zullen best verdienstelijk zijn geweest. Clapton vind ik overschat. Dat ze samen spelen maakt het geen supergroep. Desondanks is White Room een prima nummer. Het B-kantje Those Were the Days is erg matig. Dat doet Mary Hopkin een stuk beter.
