Deze week vier niet al te hoge entry's. Op 31 is dat Bush met Greedy fly, dat vooral weer klinkt als Bush, met die herkenbare gekwelde stem van Gavin Rossdale. Klein opvallend detail over deze song: hij lijkt een paar keer afgelopen te zijn, maar dan gaat hij toch weer door. Verder heb ik hier weinig over te melden.

Op 36 het debuut van het Amerikaanse Fountains of Wayne, met het vaak herhaalde refrein I just wanna sink to the bottom with you, waardoor de single wel gemakkelijk herkenbaar is, maar ook iets simpels, zelfs kneuterigs krijgt. Leuk voor een keertje of een feestje, maar niet iets wat je zelf zou opzetten als je een geweldig liedje wilt horen.

Op 37 komt oudgediende Paul McCartney binnen, met Young boy. Het is een ouderwetse rock song, prettig om te horen, met een videoclip waarin hij zichzelf niet al te serieus neemt.

En op 38 een grote top 40 hit (nummer 2) van Babyface (zijn enige entry in mijn lijst) en nog een gouwe ouwe, Stevie Wonder. Ook dit is een ouderwetse ballad, maar nu meer in het soulgenre, met om beurten gezongen coupletten, gezamenlijk gezongen refreinen en een (onvermijdelijke) mondharmonicasolo van Stevie. Maar de opbouw is goed en het vocale geweld bereikt grote hoogten.

Het doet me goed Belle and Sebastian te verwelkomen, de eerste 3 albums en EPs uit die tijd heb ik helemaal grijsgedraaid. Dog on Wheels is schitterend, maar uiteindelijk slechts een van de vele mooie liedjes uit deze tijd.

Ook mooi is Claw Boys Claw's Why Don't You Grow, een Kink-radiohit uit die tijd. Vind deze eigenlijk mooier dan Rosie. Nu pas snap ik dat het waarschijnlijk niet over een plant o.i.d. gaat.

Bis met misschien wel hun leukste single tot nu toe en een voor mij opvallend getitelde Super Furry Animals single verhogen het (post-)Britpop-gehalte nog wat.

Verder nog een grote naam uit Mali: Salif Keita. Ken niet zoveel van hem, maar dit is wel een fijn nummer.

week 20 voor 1997 waarin Bis aan de top 3 komt ruiken de 2e Republica de top 10 inschiet en er 6 binnenkomers zijn.
Daft Punk vind ik toch vooral van hun eerste album goed, en dan worden singles nog steeds iets minder ook. Da Funk verreweg hun beste, de opvolger komt nu ook binnen. Gezongen door de autotune, wie heeft gastzangers nodig? Daft Punk niet, wat ze 20 jaar later ook denken.
John Spencer klink op zijn nieuwe tegelijk meer blues en meer Pussy Galore dan ooit. De band bestaande uit 1 drumstel en 2 gitaren maakt er een lekker vuig zootje van. Nee, een bas hebben ze nooit gehad.
Foo Fighters vond ik vaak maar zo-zo maar deze nieuwe single knalde er wel lekker in toen ik die deze week luisterde. Zeker een van hun beste, heerlijk.
Dat kun je van Bettie niet zeggen, ok vergelijken met Palomine is ook niet te doen natuurlijk. Wel een prima song.
Fiona Apple komt met een single van haar debuut, veel piano natuurlijk en intens gezongen. Destijds was ik er denk ik nog niet klaar voor geweest maar inmiddels vind ik haar wel erg goed.
Madder Rose doet het op hun 3e album een stuk rustiger aan dan op de vorige 2 die tussen alt rock en shoegaze bivakkeerden. Nog steeds wel ok al is deze single niet het beste nummer van dat album.

De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

11 | belle and sebastian - dog on wheels
De hoogste binnenkomer is van de debuut EP van Belle and Sebastian. Het nummer zelf is al twee jaar oud, uit de tijd dat twee van de bandleden nog student waren. Het nummer namen ze ook samen op, zonder de rest van de band. De dame op de cover van de EP is dezelfde als op hun debuutalbum uit 1996 en zij was destijds de vriendin van de zanger. Tegenwoordig is ze professor neuropsychologie op de universiteit van Dublin, dus als je nog eens een studie overweegt in Ierland dan weet je waar je haar van herkent.

De vierde en laatste single van New Adventures in Hi-Fi, alleen uitgebracht in Duitsland en Japan. Het nummer is vernoemd naar een film uit 1962, How the West Was Won.

20 | party animals – atomic
De Party Animals zijn eigenlijk hetzelfde als Flamman & Abraxas, dus met deze Blondie-cover hebben ze twee singles tegelijkertijd in de top 20.

Grappig weetje. Ze zal waarschijnlijk geen proces hoeven voeren om extra geld te eisen voor haar foto.

Week 21

Zo, dat was lekker shoppen in het lijstje van AngeloV. Nie veur spek & bone is één van de leukste nummers van Skik.
Future Sound Of London kende ik destijds nog niet, dat zou pas een jaar of 10 later gebeuren; past(e) wel helemaal in mijn straatje wat electro betreft en bij wat ik rond 2006-2010 veel beluisterde.

Het aanbod is weer geweldig. De grootste bands uit de jaren '90 aangevuld met nieuw werk van 1997 ontdekkingen, Geneva en Embrace.

Ik geloof dat sommigen niet kunnen wachten op het meesterwerk OK computer van Radiohead. Hier is dan in ieder geval de single Paranoid Android. En ja, ik heb het nummer als de beste van de week bestempeld. De veelzijdigheid is natuurlijk onmiskenbaar.
Maar Radiohead is natuurlijk ook de bekendste gelijk, voor deze week.

Het kan zomaar gebeuren dat één van de zeven andere (minder bekende) songs alsnog gaan ontluiken voor dit jaar en Radiohead passeren. Er zitten geen zwakke broeders tussen. Zelfs al duurt het bij de Boo Radleys dan even voordat ze los komen.

U2 staat nu 3 weken op 1, het is ook meteen de laatste. Maar welke plaat volgt hen op?

Slechts twee binnenkomers deze week; minder zal het niet voorkomen. Wel twee entry's die ik nog niet bij anderen gezien heb (als ik goed kijk). Op 27 de tweede notering van Nada Surf, uiteraard bekend van hun gimmick-hit Popular, maar ze hebben heel wat meer muziek gemaakt en zijn still going strong. Treehouse is een lekkere uptempo rocksong waarbij het goed swingen is.

En op 31 scoort George Michael zijn vijfde hit van het album Older, en weet nog altijd de top 40 te halen, al is de top 10 wel buiten zijn bereik. Het heeft die typische George Michael-swing sound die we ook kennen van Fast love en Too funky, aangenaam maar ook wat voortkabbelend zonder dat het goed blijft hangen. De toevoeging '97 is omdat dit een remix is van de albumtrack.

Volgende week wel vijf nieuwe, waaronder een wel heel grote klassieker. Wat zou die in mijn lijst gedaan hebben, toen het nog niet die erkende klassieker was?

week 21 vooe 1997 waar Wannadies waasrchijnlijk met angst en beven volgende week tegemoet ziet, al is het misschien al verrassend dat ze nu nog steeds op 1 staan. 5 binnenkomers.
Skik had ik vorig jaar graag met Tomme in m'n lijst gehad maar geen datum gevonden, hier had ik ook geen datum voor maar gelukkig nu dankzij AngeloV wel in m'n lijst. Gaaf nummer, leuke tekst zoals gebruikelijk.
Intastella lerde ik pas vorig jaar kennen eigenlijk met de singles van hun album van dat jaar, dit jaar gaan ze gewoon verder waar ze gebleven waren met hun typisch 90s mix van stijlen. Erg fijn nummer.
Volgens mij kwam ik er van Salad pas achter dat ze een 3e album hadden toen ik die in een uitverkoopbak bij de mediamrkt zag liggen voor 2... euro? gulden? In elk geval wel gekocht en dat viel niks tegen, waarom zou het ook. Deze single is ook gewoon een lekker vlot pop/rock nummer.
Fluffy heeft met hun enige album al meerdere keren in m'n lijst gestaan. I Wanna Be Your Lush was de 1e single die ik ooit hebn leren kennen, volgens mij een keer op de gok gekocht. Lekker Muffs achtig punkrock nummer.
Cranes staat met bijna alles op Spotufy behalve het album Population 4. En daar komt deze single vanaf. Voor Cranes doen wat meer recht-to-recht-aan nummer, minder zweverig en Allison is zelfs bijna te verstaan. Bijna.

nieuw:
The Smashing Pumpkins' fans moesten het in 1997 met een paar soundtrack-nummers doen: Eye (waarvan ik geen singlerelease kon vinden, anders had ik hem destijds wel gekocht, maar herinner me dat Kink FM hem wel eens draaide) en The End Is The Beginning Is The End. Die eerste van Lost Highway (geweldige film), die laatste van Batman Forever (matige film). Beide nummers wel erg goed, en die tweede ook wel een beetje de soundtrack van de zomer. Een zomer waarin ik de Pumpkins (toen mijn favoriete band) voor het eerst live zou zien.

Beck's Sissyneck is leuker dan ik me herinner. Staat me ook niet echt bij dat dit een single was. Beetje country goes hiphop.

Verder nog leuke (her)ontdekkingen van Skik, Billy Bragg en Guided By Voices. Het nummer van Skik is veel leuker dan ik me herinnerde.

Wat een alleraardigste nieuwe single van Supergrass. Ik heb het al eerder gezegd, destijds heb ik niet alles meegekregen, toen het dus 1997 was. Maar dit is een prima ontdekking. Fris, melodieus en verder helemaal ok. Loopt lekker.

En dan nog iets dat ik blijkbaar heb gemist, een Batman film. En dan is er iets grappigs. Ik toets de titel The end is the beginning is the end in en vervolgens krijg ik songs op youtube die heten The beginning is the end is the beginning. Ik ben er nu nog niet achter hoe de titel precies luidt, en misschien horen beide titel wel bij de film. Maar ik vond het grappig.

De single is goed, niet zo stevig als Faith no more. Wel spannend. Maar dat hoort dan ook bij een Batman film.

musician schrijft The End Is the Beginning Is the End is de titel van de single en de openingstrack van de soundtrack. The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning is de versie van hetzelfde nummer die als laatste track op de soundtrack staat.

Zoals al eerder gemeld, haalt Live nu de eerste plek met Freaks. Wel opmerkelijk, want de eerdere klassiekers haalden dat net niet, en Freaks vind ik nou niet bepaald hun beste. Qua behaalde punten moet Freaks het ook afleggen tegenover drie andere Live-songs.

Paranoid android heeft mij vanaf de eerste beluistering overtuigd, sterker nog, dat kan ik mij nog herinneren! Er zijn maar erg weinig songs waarvan ik nog weet dat ik ze voor het eerst beluisterde (welk programma, enz.). En dit was (volgens mijn herinnering) in een VPRO-radioprogramma waarin nieuwe singles beoordeeld werden. De VPRO was toen nog erg kritisch-alternatief en het oordeel was dat Paranoid android veel te pretentieus en onsamenhangend was; maar zelf was ik meteen om. De band was natuurlijk al bekend van enkele albums en hits, maar door deze single werden ze meteen eerste klasse, en dat is niet meer veranderd. De song is natuurlijk lang voor een single en bestaat uit drie gedeelten, waarvan het trage stuk (Rain down on me from a great height) de overige delen reliëf geeft en zo sterker maakt. De getekende clip viel ook op, en mocht zelfs niet voor 22 uur uitgezonden worden (of iets vergelijkbaars). De binnenkomst op 9 is ook erg zeldzaam hoog. Dat hij bij mij heel veel punten gaat scoren, zal nu wel duidelijk zijn.

Op 14 binnen, en toch al de tweede nieuwe, dat is extreem bijzonder, maar Tracy Bonham doet het met Sharks can't sleep, een uiterst nineties-achtig lied met rustige maar wel dreigende coupletten en een steviger refrein. De sharks en snakes uit de tekst slaan natuurlijk op het gedrag van mensen, zoals wel uit het slotcouplet blijkt (homo homini lupus est, voor wie een mondje Latijn beheerst). Een sterke song, maar voor Tracy zal het bij die ene hit blijven.

Op 23 de derde nieuwe, van Smashing Pumpkins, uit de Batman & Robin-film. De song klinkt iets moderner, met meer synthesizers dan we gewend zijn, zoals wel passend is bij de donkere sfeer van Batman-films. De melodie blijft helaas niet hangen.

Op 30 het jonge hondentrio Hanson, een Amerikaanse band bestaande uit drie broers die op dit moment tussen de 11 en 16 jaar oud zijn. Mmm bop is ontzettend aanstekelijk en werd over de hele wereld een grote hit. Al wordt het door de serieuze muziekliefhebbers vaak maar half serieus genomen, iedereen zal toch een goed humeur van dit plaatje krijgen (mits niet te vaak gedraaid).

En op 35 komt zowaar ook Hero binnen met Toen ik je zag. De song was al enkele weken uit en al een top 40-hit, tot ik tot het inzicht kwam: dit is echt mooi. De componist Guus Meeuwis is nooit in de buurt geweest van mijn top 40, maar de vertolking van zijn song door Hero haalde het dus wel. Dit komt natuurlijk uit de film All Stars, en Hero is natuurlijk de rol die Anthonie Kamerling speelde, en in die film brengt hij ook dit lied aan zijn (stille) liefde Daphne Deckers). De tekst is zeer invoelbaar, het wordt breekbaar gezongen door Anthonie en het is moeilijk om onaangeroerd te blijven van dit mooie liedje.

week 22 voor 1997 waar Bis het stokje overneemt van Wannadies en er nog geen nieuwe opvolging klaar lijkt te staan. 4 binnenkomers.
Cake Like kende ik destijds niet, zou wel helemaal mijn ding geweest zijn. Mix van riot grrls en pop/rock, ergens tussen Babes in Toyland en Kenickie.
Audioweb staat volgens mij alleen bij mij in de lijst, daar zal de laatste van het 1e album ook geen verandering in brengen denk ik. De stijl is bekend, erg 90s mix van madchester, britpop en rap.
Van Placebo weet ik eigenlijk nooit wat te verwachten; ik ken misschien 2 of 3 titels van ze. Als ik het dan hoor is het vaak 'oh deze'. Zo ook deze en dit is wel een goede.
Voor Beck geldt ook deels dat ik denk 'oh die', in deze periode was eigenlijk alles van hem wel goed.

Even flinke opruiming, ik denk dat de uitvallers bij elkaar wel een week of 60 genoteerd stonden, zo niet langer.

Het was weer eens een week van veel mooie releases. Hoogste nieuwe is voor mij Sun Hits The Sky, een single die ik destijds ook leuk vond, maar wel een stuk minder dan Richard III. Maar nu is het toch wel andersom. Muzikaal zit het erg sterk in elkaar, met een geweldige brug en heerlijk outro. En bovenal die tomeloze energie. Ergens in deze tijd traden ze op op Pinkpop en bij dit nummer vlogen de hooibalen door het publiek. Mooie beelden uit een tijd dat de Pinkpop-maandag nog integraal op televisie werd uitgezonden.

The Day Brings van Brad is voor mij ook een pareltje. Destijds een keer opgevangen op de radio en snel een stukje met de tekst meegeschreven. Nu zou ik zoiets Googlen, maar ja, 1997 en als we al internet hadden thuis dan hooguit via een inbelmodem. Ik deed een oproepje op Ceefax, de teletekst van de BBC, waar een pagina was waar je muzikale zaken achter kon laten (moest je die wel eerst analoog opsturen). Na een paar dagen stond mijn tekstvraag erop en weer een paar dagen later reageerde er iemand met het antwoord. Sindsdien altijd fan gebleven van dit nummer en deze zanger.

Van de week keek ik mijn map van destijds weer eens door en zag ik dat Strike's I Have Peace enorm goed scoorde. Eigenlijk was ik het nummer totaal weer vergeten, maar toen ik hem opzette begreep ik het wel. Een fijne Britse mix van dance, met goede zang, degelijke raps en een gospelkoor. En een straffe beat, die rond die tijd ook gebruikt werd door Liam Howlett in diens Dirtchamber Sessions.

Radiohead is de laatste tijd wel veel in het nieuws: 25 jaar geleden dat Paranoid Android en straks ook OK Computer uitkwam. Ranboy heeft er al iets over gezegd, de clip was destijds veel op MTV. Volgens mij voor 22 uur in een gecensureerde versie waarin de tepels van de animatiefiguren waren weggewerkt en later op de avond in de onbewerkte versie. Destijds was ik niet gelijk om, maar na een paar weken knalt ie ineens de top 3 binnen en was ik helemaal om. Nu heb ik hem eigenlijk wel vaak genoeg gehoord, maar deze week kon ik er toch wel weer van genieten.

Tindersticks en Faith No More komen met hun vertrouwde geluid; wie eerder werk van beide bands goed vond kan hier eigenlijk niet omheen.

Amon Tobin ben ik een paar jaar erg fan van geweest, wel iets later werk. Zijn beginwerk ken ik niet zo goed, maar de manier waarop hij hier energieke drum & bass met samba vermengt moet toch wel vernieuwend zijn geweest.

Ben Folds Five draait al eventjes mee, maar met hun album uit dit jaar is het niveau wat mij betreft wel wat omhoog gegaan. En dan moeten de beste singles nog komen.
