De nieuwe platen in de top 20:

09 | radiohead - paranoid android
De eerste single van OK Computer is een samensmelting van drie nummers, met een tekst die gaat over een vervelende ervaring van Thom Yorke met een paar mensen in een bar die onder invloed waren van cocaïne. De titel is een verwijzing naar de paranoïde androïde uit The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Uit datzelfde boek, of uit diezelfde boeken, hadden ze ook de titel OK Computer opgedoken. Die Paranoid Android uit de boeken was een depressieve robot, waarin Thom Yorke zichzelf als kind herkende: een gevoelige jongen die bang is voor de wereld om hem heen. En ook leuk om te weten: het eerste land waar Radiohead dit nummer live speelde was België, toen Radiohead (in 1996) optrad in het voorprogramma van Alanis Morissette.

De eerste single van The Seahorses, de band van de voormalige Stone Roses gitarist John Squire.

18 | the sunclub – fiesta
Oorspronkelijk uit 1996, toen nog met de volledige titel Fiesta De Los Tamborileros, maar nu in een remix van Jaydee, die ook zelf The Sunclub mede had bedacht, opnieuw een hit. Over drie jaar hoor je het nummer weer terug in Jody Bernal’s que si, que no (dat niet voor niets als toevoeging ‘Sunclub radio mix’ heeft) en over zes jaar wordt Fiesta opnieuw een hit – weer een nummer 1 hit – als Summer Jam, samen met The Underdog Project. Niet slecht dus voor een nummer dat oorspronkelijk flopte in 1996. Natuurlijk ook even aandacht voor de bijzondere videoclip bij dit nummer, gemaakt in stop-motion, die er zeker ook mede voor heeft gezorgd dat het een hit werd. TMF kreeg er geen genoeg van.

Het mag morgen dan gaan regenen, met Could you be loved van Joe Cocker is dan in ieder geval de zomer toch begonnen. Daar kan niemand tegen op, zoveel zomers geluid. Je zou er spontaan van op vakantie gaan.

De Charlatans zijn toch wel een erg leuke band hoor. Geweldige singles en het album Tellin' stories zorgt voor de ene hit na de andere.
Ook Silverchair is een enorme ontdekking van de afgelopen jaren. Cemetry is ook weer een voltreffer en in ieder geval ook wel weer afwisselend.

De Jayhawks moet je vooral horen en niet zien. Dan heb je ook daar een prima band aan.

Rustig weekje, al pakt Belle and Sebastian wel de koppositie. Het zal vast niet voor het laatst zijn.

Slechts 4 nieuwe binnenkomers, maar daarbij wel het mooiste liedje van Cake. Destijds was ik hier helemaal weg van, veel meer nog dan van The Distance en de hitjes die daarna nog kwamen.

Deze van Weezer kende ik eigenlijk niet tot een paar weken geleden. Klinkt op het eerste gehoor niet erg speciaal, maar als je dan op de tekst gaat letten... Nerdrock in optima forma.

Ook deze van Monaco voelde als nieuw, al heb ik hem destijds vast wel eens gehoord. Mijn eerste associatie was niet zo best, maar hoe ook hier groeide de waardering na een paar draaibeurten. Goed hoorbaar dat er een linkje naar New Order is, op de een of andere manier doet dit me erg aan World in Motion denken.

Nick Cave is hier wel zo'n beetje op zijn somberst wat mij betreft (tot nu toe dan in zijn carriere). Waar soms de duivel hem op de hielen lijkt te zitten, lijkt hij hier vooral terneergeslagen door de liefde en daarbij gepaarde onzekerheid.

Ik neem aan dat je hier Jesus Jones bedoelt?

week 23 voor 1997 waarin de top 2 redelijk onbedreigd is, hoewel, hoge binnenkomers? Verder blijft Foo Fighters mezelf verbazen hoe lekker dat nummer elke keer weer klinkt.
5 binnenkomers deze week.
Ik weet niet meer wanneer ik het nummer van Olive leerde kennen, maar over een paar weken komt-ie in de tipparade en deze week staat-ie in de UK charts op 1 dus doe ik 'm nu maar. Mijn meest succesvolle bijdrage aan de MuMe top 2000 tot nu toe, geweldig nummer. Op de cd-single ook een 10 minuten versie die de moeite waard is.
Cardigans komen met hun eerste nederlandse hit door de Romeo & Juliet film, eigenlijk veel te vaak gehoord maar op zich kan deze dat toch wel hebben. Dus niet echt 'te'.
Cake met de opvolger van The Distance, ook hun 2e en laatste UK top 40 single. In nederland werd dit nummer ook veel gedraaid waar ik uitging maar werd geen hit. Bijzondere versie waarvan ik me kan voorstellen dat er minstens zoveel haters als liefhebbers zijn. Ik vind het een gave versie.
Faith No More vind ik lang niet altijd goed maar deze single is behoorlijk hard, dan mag ik ze wel.
Wow!, de nederlandse spice girls? Nou, de dames waren destijds nog maar een jaar of 17,18. Vorige week hoorde ik dit nummer ook al en voor de alternatieve lijst later op de dag de nieuwe Merol, ik vond Wow toch een stuk leuker. Waarom Merol dan alternatief is.,. maar ok, Wow dus. Paar hitjes gehad, ze stellen zich in hun eerste clip nog netjes voor. Helaas zat de laatste van het voorstelrondje in het vliegtuig dat in 2010 in Libie neerstortte.

Freaks staat nog een tweede week op 1, maar het zal geen verrassing zijn dat dat volgende week afgelopen is.

Wel een verrassend hoge entry voor Supergrass, op 10 maar liefst (en dat terwijl we vorige week nog een nieuwe op 9 hadden). Sun hits the sky is een uptempo song waarvan je echt kan zeggen dat hij uit je speakers knalt. Zelden zo veel energie in een song gehoord, en na één gezongen regel hebben we al de eerste energiepiek bereikt. Opmerkelijk is ook het muzikale intermezzo met synthesizer in de hoofdrol. Hoewel de band veel goeie songs heeft gemaakt, blijft dit voor mij wel de beste.

Pas op 31 vinden we de tweede entry, ook van oude bekenden, namelijk Faith No More. Ashes to ashes klinkt stevig en scherp, een beetje zoals de coupletten van Midlife crisis, alleen net niet zo pakkend.

Op 34 komt de Schotse indierockband The Supernaturals binnen (ja, al de tweede superband deze week). Het is zo'n typische nineties rocksingle waar ik verder niet zo veel aan toe te voegen heb.

Op 35 nog een ander dan rockgeluid, disco/house van het Duitse Whirlpool Productions, een trio van Duitse DJ's. Hoewel een dansvloerklassieker, haalde hij de NL top 40 niet eens, maar stond wel 9 weken op 1 in Italië. Het refrein is erg aanstekelijk (er zijn ook geen coupletten, dus het hele liedje is aanstekelijk). Opvallend is hoe laconiek de vocalen zijn opgenomen, alsof het een grote grap is, maar de muziek staat als een huis.

Ik had die van Whirlpool Productions nog gedraaid vandaag maar niet goed genoeg bevonden. Op de top 40 site staat er een plaatje bij van Les Rhythmes Digitales die een nummer met dezelfde titel heeft... ik dacht ook dat het een nummer van hem was.
Geen idee hoe dat nou weer zit. AngeloV vast wel?

De verwarring zit wellicht in het feit dat achter de namen van de dj's die erachter zitten, bij WP o.a. Justus Kohnke en bij LRD Jacques Lu Cont, allebei beginnen met een J en dan nog een k- en o-klank erachter aan.

Zie nu wel dat volgende maand al de eerste single van Les Rhythmes Digitales komt, die gaat bij mij wel goed scoren. Vast ook top 10, net als Whirlpool Productions.

Op de UK release uit 1998 staat een remix van Les Rhytmes Digitales die wij niet kregen, misschien dat daar de verwarring door komt,overigens een lekkere remix

10 | toad the wet sprocket - come down
De eerste single van het vijfde album van Toad the Wet Sprocket. Het album dat ook het voorlopige einde van Toad the Wet Sprocket gaat betekenen, want het wordt geen groot succes. Wat ik niet wist, maar nu wel: de naam Toad the Wet Sprocket komt uit een sketch van Monty Python, waarin het ook een band betrof.

11 | foo fighters - monkey wrench
De eerste single van het tweede album van de Foo Fighters gaat over het einde van het huwelijk van Dave Grohl. Een monkey wrench is een verstelbare moersleutel, dus dat klinkt niet best voor een huwelijk. Jaren later, in 2015, kwam dit nummer weer in het nieuws, toen Dave Grohl tijdens dit nummer van het podium viel en zijn been brak. Na wat tijd om hem op te lappen maakten ze het concert nog af ook.

15 | skunk anansie - brazen (weep)
Het valt me op dat, als ik informatie zoek over de nieuwe binnenkomers in de top 20, ik verrassend vaak lees dat het nummer op 1 kwam in de IJslandse hitparade. Zo ook dit nummer van Skunk Anansie. Het nummer heeft een vrij donkere tekst (Why don't you weep / When I hurt you? / Why don't you weep / When I cut you?), wat volgens zangeres Skin ook representatief was voor hoe ze zich op dat moment in haar leven voelde.

18 | marillion - man of a thousand faces
De eerste single van Marillion sinds 1995. De titel is gebaseerd op het boek The Hero with a Thousand Faces van Joseph Campbell, een boek dat laat zien dat alle mythische verhalen een zelfde patroon hebben: een held gaat op avontuur, overwint een gevecht en komt als een nieuw mens terug.

19 | monaco - sweet lips
De opvolger van de nummer 1 hit What Do You Want From Me is de tweede single van Monaco. Het nummer wordt nog een bescheiden succes, maar hierna volgen alleen nog wat flops.

20 | placebo - bruise pristine
Het origineel komt uit 1995, maar het is deze nieuwe opname die een hit wordt. De overeenkomst met Eternal Flame van de Bangles is dat dit nummer ook naakt ingezongen is. In dit geval met de gedachte dat het nummer gaat over in elkaar geslagen worden vanwege de kleding die je draagt of hoe je er uitziet.

Een lijstje met zeven nieuwe binnenkomers deze week, waarvan ik toch wel verwacht dat ze in de komende maanden toonaangevend zullen zijn in de lijsten. Het wordt een kwestie van even aankijken hoe ze de macht zullen gaan overnemen.

Misschien verrassend hoe toch de Ocean Colour Scene zich tot de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer mag kronen. Maar, ik kon toch niet anders dan Hundred City Mile High als de beste van de week aanwijzen.
En verrassend ook, de nieuwe van Cake. Zeker aan te bevelen.

Zoals verwacht pakt Radiohead de eerste plek, en die zullen ze voorlopig niet afstaan.

De hoogste nieuwe is op 22 voor Skunk Anansie, dat met Brazen (weep) weer zo'n typische ballad produceert, met kracht en passie gezongen, in de coupletten nog ingehouden, in de refreinen voluit. Klassieke Skunk Anansie.

Een veel lichter geluid van The Cardigans op 28, dat met Lovefool hun eerste NL top 40 hit scoort. Het is een geslaagde radiovriendelijke popsong waar niemand zich een buil aan zal vallen.

Op 34 de Counting Crows met een minder bekend werkje, Daylight fading. Het heeft een vlot tempo en bevat alle ingrediënten die je van de Counting Crows zou verwachten, samenzang, een stevige gitaarsolo en licht filosofische teksten.

Op 36 vinden we het Drentse Skik, dat met Nie veur spek & bonen, een tweede entry in mijn lijst bereikt. Grote successen behaalt de band bij mij niet, daarvoor is het muzikaal te oninteressant en het dialect te afleidend. Maar dankzij een geinig geluidje en een vlot tempo is deze toch goed te doen.

Het was destijds lastig om een goeie plaat die je weinig op de radio hoorde en niet op cassette had weten te vangen, de juiste notering te geven. The May Song van The Gathering komt bescheiden op 37 binnen, maar gaat het gelukkig nog wel redelijk ver schoppen. Anneke van Giersbergen is in deze jaren de beste zangeres van Nederland, de band speelt nu een iets afgezwakte vorm van metal, dat heel genietbaar is en behoorlijk succesvol (niet met de singles, wel met de albums en optredens). Het is natuurlijk geen Strange machines, maar nog steeds van hoog niveau.

week 24 voor 1997 met een top 3 die blijft staan, de hoogste binnenkomers van vorige week lekker doorstijgen en er 3 nieuwe binnenkomers zijn.
Deadstar staat met hun vorige nog genoteerd, nu komt de nieuwe al, een lekker pop/rock plaatje helemaal in mijn stijl. Letters to Cleo is niet heel ver weg
Van Dweeb kocht ik ooit een 7" omdat de hoes er interessant uit zag. Die viel volgens mij niet heel erg mee maar ik heb de naam wel onthouden en deze single kan er prima mee door, beetje Bis, beetje powerpop, veel energie.
Bush met hun bekende britse variant op grunge, in de 90s moest ik er weinig van hebben maar nu hebben ze toch al een paar keer m'n lijst gehaald.
