Het Zweedse Melony is volgens mij vrijwel onbekend gebleven, maar Big Dipper was destijds een heerlijk KinkFM-hitje. Door de afkomst en sound moet ik gelijk aan de Wannadies denken, maar de zang is hier iets stoerder. Verder een leuke powerpop-plaat.
De single van Lullaby For The Working Class kende ik nog niet, de band ook niet echt eigenlijk. Muzikaal een soort mix van rock en folk, doet me ergens wel wat aan Beirut denken, al bestonden die destijds nog niet. De Daniel H. in kwestie is blijkbaar de zanger van de Melvins.
Mulder and Scully, daar heb ik heel wat uurtjes mee doorgebracht in de 90s. En ook in de 00's, toen ik alle seizoenen op DVD nog een keer heb doorgekeken. Het nummer van Catatonia had ik niet zo heel veel mee (andere singles wel iets meer), maar het is toch wel een erg leuk liedje eigenlijk. Naast Welshe britpop is er ook nederbritpop van Supersub, door sommige britpopvrienden destijds ook wel Supersuf gedoopt. Wel wat onterecht eigenlijk, dit is een prima Beatlesque single.
Midge Ure's Breathe kwam me wel heel bekend voor. Van toen, maar ook van recent, want deze is hier al langsgeweest in 1996. Weet even niet in welke chart ik hem onlangs tegenkwam (wellicht de Duitse), maar deze voer ik volgende week weer af...

Ja, volgens mij hadden ze, of in ieder geval zanger oprichter Jamie Harding. ook een crimineel verleden. En heeft hij nog een tijdje in de bak gezeten. Ja, ik wil niet roddelen. Maar ja, zoiets staat een gezonde muzikale carriere natuurlijk wel in de weg. Zo blijkt. Helaas, want Miyako hideaway is een prachtige song. Dan wordt het een slotakkoord ofwel de zwanenzang.
Een geweldige akoestische Bowie, een bizarre maar fraaie Blind Guardian (waar zullen we de muziek eens onder scharen), hardrock van Him en mooie britpop van de Bluetones, die zowaar ook Amsterdam hebben aangedaan voor hun clip.

Op 24 een nieuwe van Chumbawamba, Amnesia. De titel zei mij niets meer, maar als ik hem draai, klinkt het toch wel bekend: Do you suffer from long time memory loss? (uiteraard een omschrijving van de titel, die verder niet genoemd wordt). Wel flink anders dan de bekende song Tubthumpin', maar de zangeres klinkt wel vertrouwd en het refrein is gewoon lekker in het oor liggend.
Op 34 toch ook bij mij het solodebuut van Ian Brown (voorheen The Stone Roses) met My star, een spannende, wat dreigende song met een vertrouwde stem maar geen Stone Roses-sound; wel een prima single met wat schurende gitaren en sterke productie.
Op 35 zomaar ook een hiphop-entry van Puff Daddy (met hulp van The Notorious B.I.G. en nog wat anderen), It's all about the Benjamins. Er wordt weer stevig gerapt, de muziek is ook krachtig, maar toch geen rock (wat ik eigenlijk wel verwacht had). Ik weet niet of ik dit nu nog eruit zou pikken...
Op 38 nog meer muziek die wat buiten mijn gangbare smaak ligt: gladde R n B van Something for the People met de aparte titel My love is the shhh! Het past wel helemaal in deze tijd qua sound. Na een couplet door een vrouw volgt een mannelijk couplet, wat de afwisseling wel ten goede komt. Van de band heb ik buiten dit nooit meer wat gehoord.

Nog steeds in de cross over tussen rock en funk/dance, maar nu slaat de weegschaal wel door naar de rock, met sterke gitaarriffs en schreeuwende vocalen (van Rudeboy natuurlijk). - Air's doorbraaksingle is een hele fijne. Ben benieuwd of hij het net zo goed gaat doen als Casanova 70 en Le Soleil Est Près De Moi.
- Spiritualized's album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (alleen de titel is al geniaal) vind ik altijd een lange zit, maar de eerste drie nummers zijn fantastisch. Come Together gaat bij mij waarschijnlijk wel heel goed scoren later dit jaar, maar dit psychedelische meesterwerkje komt eerst.
- Fountains of Wayne's Leave The Biker is alweer een paar maanden uit. Blijkbaar kwam 'ie tegelijkertijd uit met Survival Car, maar dan in weer andere landen (beide singles hebben dezelfde b-sides). Deze vind ik wel iets leuker dan Survival Car, na Radiation Vibe misschien wel mijn favoriete nummer van hen.
- Daft Punk's Revolution 909 entert de Franse charts en nu ook de mijne. Niet zo geniaal als de vorige singles, maar nog steeds erg lekker. Stop The Music and Go Home
- Headswim's Tourniquet is een Kink FM-altrockhitje uit die tijd. Een beetje vroege Muse of Radiohead anno The Bends. Van de band hierna niet veel meer vernomen.

week 6 voor 1998 waar Robyn de macht grijpt. De eerste lijst die ik hier op de site zette in 2018 stond ze ook op 1, met Missing U.Ik vermoed dat als ik na 1993 doorgegaan was met lijsten maken ze wel meerdere nummers 1 had gehad, waaronder zeker Show Me Love. Nu dus alsnog. Saint Etienne vliegt overigens ook lekker omhoog; daarnaast zijn er 3 nieuwe.
Isabelle Caux heeft al in mijn lijst gestaan, nu het nummer waarmee ik haar leerde kennen. Volgens mij heb ik de cd-single gewoon een keer op de gok uit een bak afgeprijsde cd's gehaald, misschien wel in Brussel na het concert van Vanessa Paradis. Jaren later in elk geval maar dit nummer bevalt erg goed en ik heb later ook het bijbehorende album op de kop getikt, waarschijnlijk gewoon bij amazon. Heerlijk in het oor liggende pop/singersongwriter.
Air dan ook bij mij, voor mij verreweg hun beste nummer. De latere hitjes vond ik best ok maar na Sexy Boy had ik wel wat anders verwacht denk ik. Het concert op BKS vond ik ook best ok maar heb niet alles afgekeken, had het wel een beetje gehoord na een poosje.
Caesar is één van de Excelsior bands die achteraf nog best mee bleek te vallen, in elk geval in de begintijd. Deze single van hun 2e album.

Op de cd Nimrod heet het nummer Good Riddance (Time of your Life), als single heet het Time of your Life (Good Riddance). Oorspronkelijk was het bedoeld voor Dookie uit 1994, daarna voor de plaat daarna. Dat werd het ook niet en zo werd het als Good Riddance (Demo Version) een B-kant van de single Brain Stew / Jaded in 1996. Wel in een iets andere versie. Maar nu – of vorig jaar dan, in 1997 – is het nummer wel op het album terechtgekomen en groeit het uit tot één van de grootste hits van Green Day.

Een van de leukste kanten van dit topic is als er binnenkomers zijn in mijn lijst, waarvan ik vooraf geen flauw idee heb wat het geweest kan zijn. Daarvan vinden we een mooi exemplaar als hoogste nieuwe op 30, de band News of the Day met hun debuutsingle Touch, peel and stand. Snel even afluisteren. Welnu, de sound is typische eind jaren 90, een soort grunge-light met die typische knauwende zang die bv aan Alice in Chains doet denken. Oprichter en eigenlijk enig constant lid is Travis Meeks, de overigen zijn een soort veredelde sessiemuzikanten. Na dit succesvolle begin zakte de belangstelling alweer in...
Op 31 een bekendere naam, The Dandy Warhols, maar toen kende ik ze ook nog niet, dit is hun debuut (voor mij). De opvallende (lange) titel Not if you were the last junkie on Earth komt in de tekst niet voor, wel 'Heroin is so passé', maar misschien was dat toch net te expliciet voor een titel. De band uit Portland (US) maakt behoorlijk vrolijke maar toch alternatieve muziek, gemakkelijk mee te zingen. Het klinkt allemaal erg tongue-in-cheek, al heb ik geen idee wat ze hier nu mee willen zeggen (behalve wat het letterlijk is).
En ook de derde entry is een debuut (bij mij), het Amerikaanse Grandaddy met A.M. 180. De song begint met een soort kinderlijke melodie uitgevoerd op een primitieve keyboard, maar als de gitaren inschuiven, wordt het toch een wat volwassenere liedje, al blijft de simpele melodie steeds terugkeren. De zang is niet zo sterk, maar dat stoort ook niet echt.
De vierde nieuwe is een re-entry (dat gebeurde wel eens, maar is wel zeldzaam), Freak van Strangelove; zie verder 26 november 1997.

De song begint met een soort kinderlijke melodie uitgevoerd op een primitieve keyboard, maar als de gitaren inschuiven, wordt het toch een wat volwassenere liedje, al blijft de simpele melodie steeds terugkeren. De zang is niet zo sterk, maar dat stoort ook niet echt.
De vierde nieuwe is een re-entry (dat gebeurde wel eens, maar is wel zeldzaam), Freak van Strangelove; zie verder 26 november 1997.

nieuw:
- Sven Väth's Fusion is ook echt een fusion, tussen techno en fanfaremuziek. Bijzondere sound in tijden waarin drum & bass en big beat hoogtijvieren in danceland. Het klinkt ook een beetje alsof Yello's The Race wordt uitgevoerd door een steel band.
- Caesar was ik groot fan van in 1998 en de jaren daarna. No Rest For The Alonely helemaal grijsgedraaid. Helaas zijn de beste nummers niet als single uitgebracht, maar deze komt er wel redelijk vlak achteraan wat mij betreft.
- The Posies' laatste album heette Success, maar echt veel hadden ze dat niet en dus gaven ze er de brui aan (om jaren later weer verder te gaan). Ik kocht het album ook al vrij snel na release voor 5 gulden. Een minder album dan de vorige paar, maar dit is toch wel een erg fraai nummer.
- Saint Etienne's Sylvie voelt meer als een albumtrack, door de lange opbouw is het niet echt een instant hit. Maar wel een heel goed nummer. Hun beste single in jaren.
- Van Grandaddy zag ik in sommige charts 'Everything Beautiful is Far Away' binnenkomen, maar de historische lijsten hier geven A.M. 180 aan en dat was ook de doorbraakculthit waardoor ik ze destijds leerde kennen. Beetje gimmicky door dat valse riedeltje (doe mij maar Summer Here Kids), maar toch leuk.
- In 1997 ging ik naar Torhout, die echt een schitterende line-up hadden met o.a. David Bowie, Daft Punk en Radiohead. Grote onbekende was voor mij Channel Zero, een Belgische band. Is eigenlijk altijd zo gebleven tot deze week. Iets wat me bij Belgische bands die je alleen op StuBru hoort altijd opvalt is dat ze wel heel erg als hun internationale voorbeelden klinken en dat is hier niet anders. Self Control had zo van Soundgarden kunnen en op Badmotorfinger kunnen staan. Meestal kunnen die Belgische bands zich bij lange na niet meten met hun voorbeelden, maar hier komen ze toch aardig dicht in de buurt. Heerlijk nummer dit.
- The Wilsons is de band van de 2 dochters van Brian Wilson en een halve voortzetting van Wilson Philips. Waar die band wel echt popmuziek maakte, is dit ietsje meer richting powerpop/indie.
- Deze van Junkie XL is beter dan ik me herinnerde. Niet zo goed als Billy Club, maar wel een iets meer eigen geluid.

- Sven Väth's Fusion is ook echt een fusion, tussen techno en fanfaremuziek. Bijzondere sound in tijden waarin drum & bass en big beat hoogtijvieren in danceland. Het klinkt ook een beetje alsof Yello's The Race wordt uitgevoerd door een steel band.
- Caesar was ik groot fan van in 1998 en de jaren daarna. No Rest For The Alonely helemaal grijsgedraaid. Helaas zijn de beste nummers niet als single uitgebracht, maar deze komt er wel redelijk vlak achteraan wat mij betreft.
- The Posies' laatste album heette Success, maar echt veel hadden ze dat niet en dus gaven ze er de brui aan (om jaren later weer verder te gaan). Ik kocht het album ook al vrij snel na release voor 5 gulden. Een minder album dan de vorige paar, maar dit is toch wel een erg fraai nummer.
- Saint Etienne's Sylvie voelt meer als een albumtrack, door de lange opbouw is het niet echt een instant hit. Maar wel een heel goed nummer. Hun beste single in jaren.
- Van Grandaddy zag ik in sommige charts 'Everything Beautiful is Far Away' binnenkomen, maar de historische lijsten hier geven A.M. 180 aan en dat was ook de doorbraakculthit waardoor ik ze destijds leerde kennen. Beetje gimmicky door dat valse riedeltje (doe mij maar Summer Here Kids), maar toch leuk.
- In 1997 ging ik naar Torhout, die echt een schitterende line-up hadden met o.a. David Bowie, Daft Punk en Radiohead. Grote onbekende was voor mij Channel Zero, een Belgische band. Is eigenlijk altijd zo gebleven tot deze week. Iets wat me bij Belgische bands die je alleen op StuBru hoort altijd opvalt is dat ze wel heel erg als hun internationale voorbeelden klinken en dat is hier niet anders. Self Control had zo van Soundgarden kunnen en op Badmotorfinger kunnen staan. Meestal kunnen die Belgische bands zich bij lange na niet meten met hun voorbeelden, maar hier komen ze toch aardig dicht in de buurt. Heerlijk nummer dit.
- The Wilsons is de band van de 2 dochters van Brian Wilson en een halve voortzetting van Wilson Philips. Waar die band wel echt popmuziek maakte, is dit ietsje meer richting powerpop/indie.
- Deze van Junkie XL is beter dan ik me herinnerde. Niet zo goed als Billy Club, maar wel een iets meer eigen geluid.

Luister meestal de albumversies, maar heb die eens opgezocht, is inderdaad wat kordater. Goed dat ze flink op het intro hebben bezuinigd.
