Weer onder de indruk van het nieuwe werk dat mij deze week is aangeboden. Het is al heel druk, met forse wisselingen in de lijst. Krijg je elke week het ene leuke nummer na het andere in je schoot geworpen.

Het debuut van het volslagen onbekende Days of the new. Creed is ook al min of meer een nieuwe band, op de één of andere manier weten ze altijd te imponeren. En ik ben natuurlijk ook altijd blij met een nieuwe Spacehog.

De Fun Lovin' Criminals coveren een oude James Bond song. Het is me een paar keer voorbij gekomen en ik wil heel erg graag dat het nóg beter is en een hele spectaculaire versie.

Maar ik moet hier eerlijk zijn. Hoewel een gedegen poging, slagen ze er niet in het origineel van Louis Armstrong te overtreffen. Verre van. Maar ja. De originele We have all the time in the world is eigenlijk dan ook wel een plaatsje in je Top 100 aller tijden waard.

week 4 van 1998 met daarin 2 hoge binnenkomers, 2 nieuwe ontdekkingen en verder onderin (te) veel nummers die al ruim 10 weken genoteerd staan, opruiming gaat langzaam.
Robyn is hoogste nieuwe met Show Me Love, niet te verwarren met bijna naamgenoot Robin S. In tegenstelling tot die laatste zorgde dit nummer dat ik instant fan werd. Het nummer werd ook titelnummer van de gekuisde titel van de film Fucking Amal wat in elk geval ook voor meer bekendheid zorgde.
Ook van Catatonia was dit het eerste nummer dat ik van ze kende. Op zich een prima band al kunnen hun albums en zelfs greatest hits me maar matig boeien. Een paar singles echter vind ik echt wel erg goed waaronder deze. In de clip zijn de 'echte' Mulder en Scully nog te zien.
Peach Union ken ik sinds gister, ze komen met dit nummer in de UK charts binnen. Muzikaal in het rijtje St Etienne/Dubstar. Ze heten destijds Peach maar hebben ergens hun naam gewijzigd.
Shelby kwam ik tegen in de franse charts, het is geen solozangeres maar een band bestaande uit oa Keren Ann die later solo flink wat succes heeft gehad in frankrijk. De andere zangeres kom je dan weer op diverse albums tegen om viool te spelen (oa vanessa paradis, soko en veel soundtracks) Dit nummer had ook zo van de Corrs kunnen zijn maar wordt deels engels en deels frans gezongen.

Deze week 4 binnenkomers, waarvan de hoogste op 23, de doorbraaksingle voor het Amerikaanse Matchbox 20 (later Matchbox Twenty), Push. En daarmee komen er in twee opeenvolgende weken songs binnen met dezelfde titel Push, zonder dat er enig verband is. Push is geen opmerkelijke song, typisch Amerikaans nineties, en ook meteen het grootste succes voor de band (al bleef het in NL in de tipparade steken).

Ook het debuut bij mij voor Eagle-Eye Cherry (zoon van jazzmusicus Don Cherry en broer van Neneh Cherry), uit Zweden. Save tonight is een droomdebuut, een instant succes over de hele wereld en nog altijd veel gedraaid en een fijne song. Helaas is dit ook direct het hoogtepunt voor Eagle-Eye.

Op 36 komt alsnog Janet Jackson met Together again binnen (hij staat al een paar weken in de NL top 40), een supercatchy lichtvoetig disco-achtig liedje. Janets carrière ging al een paar jaar minder goed, maar met deze song scoort ze zo maar haar grootste hit: 21 weken in de NL top 40 en nummer 1. Bij mij zal het zo'n vaart niet lopen, maar het blijft een lekker liedje.

Op 37 komt ten slotte Hallo Venray! binnen met Love ya. Ik kan terugvinden dat dit een single was, maar is kennelijk niet op een album verschenen en ik kan het niet vinden op Youtube of Spotify...

Volgens Discogs wel op een album. En er is ook nog een Promo Sample Versie. Maar verder inderdaad spoorloos verdwenen ranboy. Jammer, zou het nummer wel willen horen.

Het album staat wel op Spotify maar helemaal uitgegrijsd dus niet afspeelbaar. Verkeerde land? Alleen in Limburg?

Bernard Butler pakt na een week de eerste plek alweer af van Björk, maar die krijgt nog genoeg kansen in de toekomst. Bij Butler zijn die veel schaarser.

Echt grote nieuwe releases heb ik niet gezien deze week, maar ik was wel blij dat The All Seeing I voorbij kwam in een radioshow van John Peel. Dit hobbyproject van een paar muzikanten met allerlei lijntjes naar Pulp hebben in deze jaren toch een paar briljante singles gemaakt, waarvan dit de eerste is. Met deze cover van het Sonny & Cher origineel (ook al een heerlijke plaat) stelden ze meteen hun pensioen veilig, want 2 jaar later samplede Britney Spears de ritmetrack van The All Seeing I en zong zij haar eigen versie in.

Waar The All Seeing I een popliedje uit de jaren '60 mengt met een hedendaags drum & bass ritme, gooit Goldie het over een andere boeg. Temper Temper is een mix van drum & bass en zware rock. Ik lees nu dat Noel Gallagher hier gitaar speelt, dat was ik compleet vergeten.

Het pure gitaarwerk komt deze week van Benjamin B., een Caesar-bandje dat ik destijds niet helemaal mee heb gekregen (alleen de naam). Forever Careless is in ieder geval een leuk springerig indiepopliedje. Helaas is dit wel gelijk ook hun enige echte single.

Het Engelse Hood heb ik ooit ontdekt via een buurtgenoot die daar enorm fan van was. Een Engelse band lo-fi rockband met een behoorlijk groot oeuvre. Wat ik ervan ken is of bloedmooi of verzuipt in galm en experiment. Dit valt gelukkig in de eerste categorie. Mooi klarinetspel (?) ook.

Speakersluts heb ik eindelijk op YT kunnen zetten, met dank aan Angelo die ze digitaal in bezit had. Lekker punknummertje, dat een enorme Kink-hit was en me na een paar seconden gelijk weer bekend in de oren klonk.

Paul McCartney is wat mij betreft de grootste nog levende popmuzikant (eigenlijk al vanaf de jaren '60). Dit is ook weer een mooi melancholisch pareltje. Eigenlijk de eerste single van Flaming Pie waardoor ik begrijp dat die plaat zo goed ontvangen werd destijds.

Grappig om in de lijst van herman the All Seeing I tegen te komen. Deze band kreeg ik pas een jaartje later in het vizier. Op 1st man in space nam Philip Oakey de vocals voor zijn rekening. Kon er eerder deze week niet opkomen toen ik een ander topic over de Sheffield bands tegen kwam...

Jij laat dan weer Melony's Big Dipper binnenkomen, geweldige Kink-plaat was dat destijds. Had die nog helemaal niet in het vizier voor nu, maar grote kans dat die ook in mijn lijst staat volgende week.

Tja... Kink FM met hun wekelijkse Outlaw 41 was destijds inderdaad wel een interessante bron van nieuwe muziek. Jammer dat die lijsten niet op het wereldwijde web zijn terug te vinden.

Er is wel een opgave met alle nummer 1's van Kink FM. Die loopt tot en met 2022.
Ik kan niet goed hoogte krijgen of de Outlaw 41 nu nog steeds bestaat. Of dat ze er mee zijn opgehouden in 2023.

Ik dacht even een mooi rustig akoestisch rondje te houden, met Blof en Elton John. Een beetje bijkomen van de afgelopen weken.

Maar zo gaat het dan toch nooit. Ik ontdekte dat mij de Seahorses met Love me and Leave me in het najaar van 1997 was ontgaan. Gelukkig merkte ik dat het nummer nu in Nederland is uitgebracht en mag het in de herkansing. Graag zelfs, het is een prima song.

En toen dienden zich ook de vrolijke Living End zich nog aan. Een nieuwe van Kent, The Living end en The Presidents of the United States of America en het hek was weer van de dam.

Slechts drie binnenkomers deze week, waarvan één ook nog een oudje is. Maar die komt dan ook ongehoord hoog binnen, op 8. Dat kon natuurlijk, omdat ik Ain't got no... I got life al lang kende. Maar het betreft wel een andere versie dan die van de eerste hit in 1968, maar toch wel uit dezelfde tijd. Het is een samenvoeging door Nina zelf van 2 songs uit de musical Hair, met een mooie opbouw van somber naar euforisch. Ik zal vast even geaarzeld hebben of ik hem zou noteren, maar hij werd toen goed gedraaid en een top 10 hit, dus het was niet (alleen) omdat het teerde op oude bekendheid.

Op 32 alweer een nieuwe single van The Suburbs, Dancing in the air, en die klinkt weer erg prettig in de oren, wat donker van stem.

En op 35, nog wat aarzelend, de live (hit)) versie van Tyrone van Erykah Badu, een geweldige performance van de zangeres met een tekst die duidelijk partij kiest voor de vrouw in een man/vrouw-relatie, en het duidelijk hoorbare publiek gaat daar ook in mee. Al direct een klassieker in het genre.

week 5 voor 1998 waarin Nilsson nog aan de top staat, opvolging lijkt wel aanstaande. De single is in deze week van 98 ook al uit de Tipparade verdwenen helaas.
Vorige week noemde ik St Etienne en Dubstar nog al referentie bij Peach Union, zonder te realiseren dat ze deze week beide binnenkomen met een nieuwe single. Voorlopig houdt Peach Union ze nog even achter zich. Naast deze 2 nog 2 andere binnenkomers.
Saint Etienne hoorde ik volgens mij het eerst met dit nummer, vond ik meteen erg gaaf. Pas veel later ontdekt dat de tekst een soort brits onderkoelde, maar daardoor extra harde, versie van Jolene genoemd kan worden.
Dubstar heb ik pas door dit topic ontdekt, vanaf de 1996 lijstjes. Deze single komt van hun 2e album en laat een vergelijkbaar geluid horen als die van het debuut.
Foo Fighters kende ik natuurlijk wel maar dacht dat ik daar weinig aan vond, dat is door dit topic ook wel bijgetrokken. Overigens had ik hun 'greatest hits' al eerder een keer aangeschaft, dat wel.
Imani Coppola, eendagsvlieg die in Nederland echter geen hit werd. Altijd als ik deze titel zie denk ik 'wat was dit ook weer en vond ik dat leuk?'. Nu weer eens gedraaid, oja die. Leuk, ja best wel.
