Queen Adreena is de nieuwe band van zangeres Katie Jane Garside en gitarist Crispin Gray, beide voorheen in Daisy Chainsaw. Queen Adreena zou het 4 albums volhouden en daarmee een van m'n favoriete 00's band worden. Deze single is het eerst wat ze uitbrachten. Zeer herkenbaar als je Daisy Chainsaw kent.

nieuw:
Twee knallers die hoog nieuw binnenkomen. Van NIN had ik dat wel verwacht: hoewel ik er de laatste jaren niet veel meer naar luisteren, heb ik The Fragile destijds helemaal grijsgedraaid en nu voel ik ook de urgentie weer en hoor ik ook de fijne opbouw weer. Geweldige plaat met een megalomaan geluid waarmee eigenlijk alleen Trent Reznor weg kan komen.

Agnelli & Nelson waren een onbekende voor mij: destijds was ik niet echt into trance en een hit werd dit bij ons ook niet, dus dit nummer had ik compleet gemist. Maar ben blij dat ik dit nu alsnog ontdek via dit topic, want wat een heerlijke ontdekking is dit. Het enige nadeel is dat zelfs de extended mix nog te kort is en wat abrupt eindigt.

Een beetje in hetzelfde straatje, maar dan met vocalen is Not Over Yet '99, een hit van een paar jaar terug die mooi onder handen is genomen door Paul Oakenfold.

Boomin' Back Atcha is een fijne ontdekking via pureshores. Kende het niet, maar na een paar weken draaien ben ook helemaal om. Toffe hiphop met een bigbeat-feel.

Iets verder terug in de tijd gaan we met De-Phazz, die fraai inhaakt op de mambo-rage van eind jaren '90 met The Mambo Craze. Het nummer is gebaseerd op Xavier Cugat's Adios uit 1940 en is nu verpakt in een mooie smaakvolle downtempo plaat.

In de mooie gitaarliedjes hoek vinden we Suede, waarvan we destijds al hoopten dat Everything Will Flow een single zou worden. Het pronkstuk van het album. Maar achteraf vind ik She's In Fashion wel wat beter denk ik. De verdere chartrun zal uitwijzen hoe deze discussie verder beslecht wordt. Turin Brakes was destijds een van de namen die werd gekoppeld aan de 'New Acoustic Movement' met het motto Quiet is the new loud. Inderdaad een zeer rustig liedje, maar wel erg fraai. Het doet me altijd een beetje denken aan This Strange Effect van Dave Berry.

Ai, excuses, ik was vroeg dit keer. Ik hou altijd woensdag 18:00 aan, ook al red ik dat meestal niet.

Een prachtig stukje rock-kitsch van de Zweed Andreas Johnson. Ik zal de eerste zijn om per direct toe te geven dat ik nog nooit van de man had gehoord maar dat hoeft geen belemmering te zijn. Integendeel.

Tom Jones en de Cardigans hebben zich gebogen over een oudje van de Talking Heads en het pakt wonderwel uit. En als single vind ik ook uiteindelijk Brand New Day van Sting helemaal niet zo onaardig. Ik heb volgens mij al weer een tijdje niets meer van hem gehoord.

Dan kocht ik in België een cd-single van dEUS die nu net toevallig op punt van verschijnen staat. Of al is verschenen maar ik heb niet kunnen achterhalen wanneer Humo precies dit nummer heeft uitgedeeld aan haar lezers. Prachtig nummer, daar niet van.

De stevigheid komt van Braid en Ben Harper. En ik weet nog niet precies wat ik aan moet met God Man van David Sylvian. In mijn geheugen is het album Dead bees on a cake (veel) beter dan de track God Man. Maar ik zal mijn best doen alles weer eens op te frissen...

Na 7 weken op 1 hebben The Flaming Lips toch ruimte moeten maken voor Moving van Supergrass, en ook nog voor The Chemical Brothers.

Hoogste nieuwe is de doorbraak van een Belgische rockband, Arid, en hun vlotte single Believer, dat geen nieuwe paden bewandelt maar dankzij de stem van Jasper Steverlinck en heldere productie toch een welkome binnenkomer is. In NL hebben ze weinig potten kunnen breken maar in de Belgische single- en albumlijsten gaan ze heel goede zaken doen.

Les Rythmes Digitales is in feite Stuart Price, een Britse musicus, componist en producer, die ook in Zoot Woman zat. Sometimes klinkt enerzijds erg elektronisch, maar heeft anderzijds een meeslepende zanglijn, waardoor het ook voor de niet-dancefans een fijn plaatje is. Bij mij blijft het wel zijn enige hit onder deze naam.

Op 29 de enige entry van de Amerikaanse rockband Lit, My own worst enemy. De band zit in de hoek van The Offspring, maar dan minder punk en meer mainstream. In de US hadden ze veel succes, in NL blijft het bij deze bescheiden top 40-hit. Het is zonder meer een aanstekelijk liedje, maar het is hier ook wel bij gebleven.

Op 37 vinden we de opvolgsingle van Turn around, namelijk Feel good van het Britse danceduo Phats & Small. Hoewel ik deze sindsdien nooit meer gehoord heb, werd het nog een aardige top 40-hit. De sound lijkt erg veel op de voorganger, vooral instrumenteel is hij nauwelijks verschillend; maar waarom zou je een winnende formule veranderen?

- Afrika Shox van Leftfield was destijds mijn kennismaking en ik was gelijk groot fan. Geweldige video, single helemaal grijsgedraaid. Album blijft ook tof, hoewel het allemaal iets gedateerder klinkt nu.
- Space Raiders is een ontdekking via dit topic, erg leuke feestelijke electroclash-achtige plaat.
- The All Seeing I met weer een heerlijke Jarvis Cocker-tekst vanuit het perspectief van een man die zijn gezin moet opgeven om zijn astronautendroom te verwezenlijken.
- Van Simon Collins had ik nog nooit gehoord, maar de dromerige pop van Pride bevalt me wel. Typisch late 90's downtempo-sausje ook in de productie. Net eens wat meer over hem opgezocht en nu blijkt zijn vader ene wereldberoemde Phil te zijn...
- Tori Amos' Bliss is steeds weer erg fijn om te horen, maar in tegenstelling tot haar vroege solowerk blijft het helaas niet echt meer hangen.
- Mr. Scruff brengt ons aanstekelijke electro swing. Als ik me niet vergis zat dit nummer vroeger standaard bij mp3player WinAmp als je die downloadde.
- Chris Cornell's solowerk hoor je eigenlijk nooit meer, maar dit Can't Change Me doet nauwelijks onder voor de meeste Soundgarden-single. Iets rustiger, maar daardoor komt die stem misschien nog wel beter uit de verf.

Grappig, ik kocht toen alles van dEUS, maar hier had ik nog nooit van gehoord. Discogs kent hem ook niet. RYM wel:

The Ladder mag dan niet het meest favoriete album van Yes zijn, Homeworld is een absoluut topnummer.
Prachtige nieuwe binnenkomers, ook weer eens een nieuwe David Bowie. Vrij rustig nummer.

Sloan en Silverchair brengen geweldige rock en aan een stevige Porcupine Tree moet ik altijd even wennen. Maar het is onmiskenbaar de band.

dEUS laten verdwijnen weer, One advice, space bleek al aan de beurt geweest in februari van dit jaar.

Een rustig weekje, met vier binnenkomers. De hoogste is de debuutsingle als solozanger van Chris Cornell (Soundgarden). Op Can't change me geen zwaar bandgeluid, maar een iets rustigere productie, waardoor de zang en de teksten meer naar voren komen. Het refrein is sterk maar toch werd dit niet echt een hit; maar wel een goeie song.

Op 31 de rockzangeres met de hese stem, Melissa Etheridge, en Angels would fall. Opnieuw een degelijke AOR-single waarmee ze haar fans goed bedient maar geen nieuw publiek zal krijgen.

Op 34 vinden we het productieve Texas (uit Schotland) met Summer son (ik neem aan een woordspeling op het veel meer voor de hand liggende 'summer sun'), een behoorlijk uptempo goed in het gehoor liggende song, waarbij het refrein geaccentueerd wordt door stevige klokslag-achtige geluiden (Tubular bells?) en zoals wel vaker een broeierige clip. Ondanks dat het een van hun bekendste songs is, bleef dit in NL in de tipparade steken.

De laatste binnenkomer is van de Guano Apes, die op Lords of the boards weer een wat steviger gitaargeluid laten horen, met een anthemachtig geschreeuwd refrein en iets rustiger coupletten. Ook deze klassieker in het genre wist in NL niet eens de tipparade te halen, opmerkelijk genoeg.

week 37 voor 1999 met slechts 3 binnenkomers, even wachten tot oktober begint dan heb ik weer een rijtje klaarstaan. Voor de top 10 maakt het niet zoveel uit, die zit vol zat.
Dan komt de hoogste ook nog uit bovenstaand lijstje aangezien ik daar geen datum bij had. Wel ok nummer maar geen Open Your Eyes.
