The Sound of the Big Babou kwam toen ook regelmatig langs op Kink FM en bracht denk ik zo Laurent Garnier voor het eerst op mijn vizier.
Pet Shop Boys' New York City Boy kende ik volgens mij nog niet, maar vind dit nu al van hun leukere singles uit de 2e helft van de 90's. Lekker disco-achtig en uitgelaten.
David Sylvian's I Surrender is een mooie meditatieve ambienttrack. Sterker nog, toen ik dit vorige week luisterde op weg naar werk vergat ik helemaal uit te stappen bij het juiste metrostation, zo erg was ik er in verzonken.
PJ - Happy Days is voor mij een grote ontdekking. Heerlijke French house plaat uit '96 die die dit jaar opnieuw komt bovendrijven in een Phats & Small remix.
Luna is in de 90's toch ook wel een aardige constante gebleken. De band die Dean Wareham startte na de breakup van Galaxie 500 haaldde geregeld mijn lijst, maar nooit mijn top 20. Misschien dat dat dan nu een keer gaat lukken.
Birdie is een nieuwe Engelse band bestaande uit wat mensen die al een jaar of 15/20 meedraaien in de alternatieve Britse muziek. Een van hen is Debsey Wykes, die in 1980 met Dolly Mixture een fijne indie girl group cover maakte van The Shirelles' Baby It's You en in de vroege 90's nog meezong op een Saint Etienne single. De single Folk Singer is rustige indie pop met een inderdaad folkachtige sfeer.

Mooi dat je I surrender noteert, maar bij de meesten heeft hij in het voorjaar al een notering gehad (bij mij op 1). Bij jou kan ik hem inderdaad niet vinden.

Ik zie dat ik hem toen wel had beluisterd, maar hem inderdaad niet had laten binnen komen. Ik vind hem nu ook veel mooier dan toen. Waarschijnlijk waren de luisteromstandigheden nu beter.

Elke keer als ik Marilyn Manson als nieuwe tip aangekondigd zie denk ik: mwah, Manson. Geen idee waarom dat proces zo werkt want ik kan niet anders dan erkennen dat de 'creep' van Ohio geweldige singles uitbrengt. In meervoud.
Dat hij dan de schrik is van ouders, kerken, overheidsinstanties etc. doet mij dan nog weer extra plezier. Maar feitelijk moet ik Manson in mijn geest meer waardering tonen. Hij blijft een beetje een engerd maar dat is nu eenmaal zijn handelsmerk.
Prachtige nieuwe single ook van de Eurythmics. Tot mijn frustratie vond ik voor het eerst een heel album van de Eurtythmics heel goed (gaat over Peace) met o.a. I saved the world today. Ik denk dat voor de oude Eurythmics jaren na dato de band van Lennox en Stewart te mainstream is geworden. Maar ik vind I saved the world today echt een single die mooi loopt.
En de Charlatans zijn Goddank ook weer terug. De nieuwe single is van het album Us and only us, uiteindelijk het hoogst gewaardeerde album van de band bij RYM.

Vier nieuwe deze week, waarvan de drie hoogste achter elkaar staan van 23 t/m 25. De hoogste is voor oudgediende en topscoorder David Bowie. Thursday's child is de eerste single van het nieuwe album Hours en laat een Bowie horen die nog (productioneel) altijd met zijn tijd meegaat, maar tegelijk een wat melancholieke, zelfs wat vermoeide indruk maakt. Het blijft natuurlijk altijd een genot om iets nieuws van hem te horen, maar een klassieker gaat dit helaas niet worden.
Op 24 de eerste entry bij mij voor het Amerikaanse Vertical Horizon (probeer je die bandnaam maar eens voor te stellen...) met We are. De zang klinkt vrij agressief, maar valt verder prima binnen de alternative rock van deze jaren. In NL scoorde de band alleen drie tipnoteringen, waarvan dit bij mij de grootste hit zal worden.
Op 25 komt Junkie XL binnen, dat met Zerotonine voor het eerst de Nederlandse top 40 haalt (iets wat de Urban Dance Squad nooit gelukt is). Dankzij de typische vioolpartijen en een simpel vaak terugkerend refrein was dit commercieel genoeg om een hit te worden, maar de raps van Rudeboy en de typische productie van Tom Holkenborg maken het toch avontuurlijk genoeg om vaak van te genieten.
Op 34 kwam ik in mijn schrift weer een single tegen die ik aanvankelijk niet kon terugvinden: Phil Oakey met Howcome. Dit bestaat niet, maar Phil Oakey had in 1999 wel meegezongen op een single van All Seeing Eye, 1st man in space. Die dus snel afluisteren, en gelukkig, daar valt regelmatig het woord Howcome. Na 25 jaar weer een notering gecorrigeerd. Het is een vrij snelle, elektronische, zelfs wat neurotische song, waarbij Phils stem nog voor wat houvast en herkenning zorgt, anders was het wel erg kil (wat natuurlijk wel goed bij het onderwerp past). De tekst is overigens van Jarvis Cocker.

Week 38 voor 1999 met alweer een andere nummer 1, gaat nu even behoorlijk snel achter elkaar. Vier binnenkomers waarvan de hoogste een rock'n'rollende Chris Isaak.Dat kan hij natuurlijk wel maar is hij nauwelijks bekend van in Nederland. Maar Blue Hotel en Living for Your Lover waren toch de singles waarmee ik hem heb leren kennen.

Ik vind het leuk dat jij altijd specifieke mixen erbij noemt in jouw toplijst
Bij Jamiroquai vind ik dat helemaal essentieel, aangezien ik de eigen versies meestal niks aan vind en het echt aan de remixen ligt, in het geval van Supersonic (Restless Soul Main vocal mix) waar een meisje meezingt en het een net andere sfeer krijgt. Die versie telt voor mij in mijn lijst.....

In 1999 ook de cd singles gekocht van New York City Boy en Happy Days. Nog steeds leuke nummers. Summer in Space kende ik niet. Dankzij pureshores nu ook in mijn lijst. Verder nog een lekkere bubblegum hit van Backstreet Boys en fijne hiphop van Pharoahe Monch.

Verder nog een lekkere bubblegum hit van Backstreet Boys en fijne hiphop van Pharoahe Monch.

Nine Inch Nails pakt de eerste plek. Dat was ze (hem) wel vaker gelukt, maar de laatste keer was toch alweer een hele tijd geleden.
Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is van David Bowie. Nu ben ik wel fan, maar destijds deed dit me niet veel en was ik meer met andere muziek bezig. Maar anno nu vind ik Thursday Child wel een goed sfeervol nummer, hoewel het voor mij (nog?) geen klassiekerstatus heeft.
James had vooral in de eerste helft van de jaren '90 veel goede singles. Dit is dan weer de beste in een paar jaar, geproduceerd door ene Brian Eno zie ik.
Stereolab komt binnen met een wat onbekendere single, maar voor mij is deze wel speciaal. De b-kant leerde ik kennen via een verzamelaar en was ooit mijn kennismaking met de band, die door de jaren heen is uitgegroeid tot een topfavoriet.
Deze single van Junkie XL was ik een beetje vergeten, maar het kan ook zijn dat ik hem destijds niet zo goed vond. Nu vind ik het wel een prima plaat eigenlijk, en je kan hier eigenlijk ook wel in horen dat er in Tom Holkenborg een filmmuziekcomponist verscholen zit.
Soulwax, Live en Muse, drie megapopulaire bands delen de onderste plekken. Soulwax vind ik de leukste van de drie, maar Too Many DJ's vind ik na al die jaren wel wat minder. Deze single van Live heb ik destijds erg vaak gehoord, bij het uitgaan was 'ie wel vaste prik. En ik kreeg de single van een kortstondig vriendinnetje. Maar eigenlijk was ik band hier al wel een beetje zat en staat deze er ook in vanwege sentimentele redenen. Muse vond ik erg tof in de beginjaren, maar na het tweede album was de koek wel op (voor mij dan). Cave is achteraf wel een van hun fijnere singles. Lekker oncompliceerd, niet zo pretentieus en de zanger klinkt hier nog niet alsof er een kat wordt gecastreerd.

Goh, ik ben dit nummer altijd blijven draaien, maar ik heb me echt nooit gerealiseerd dat de zanger van The Human League hierop meedeed. Misschien omdat ik The Human League pas na All Seeing I leerde kennen. The Human League ontdekte ik eigenlijk pas met het album uit 200.

Ondanks dat het een wereldnummer is, haalt Without you I'm nothing pas in zijn zevende week de eerste plek. Hoofdschuldige hiervoor is het eveneens geweldige Moving.
Anouk nestelt zich onder de grote namen van de Nederpop met dit R U kiddin' me, binnen op 19. Het nummer is een perfecte rocksong, met een goed inleefbare tekst en puntige gitaren, en dat levert haar opnieuw een nummer 2-hit in de top 40 op (na Nobody's wife). Enige minpuntje is dat het intro erg veel lijkt op dat van Maria (Blondie), dat eerder dit jaar een hit was.
Ocean Colour Scene, de band zonder profiel, zoals ik het ervaar, scoort alweer een flinke hit met Profit in peace, een aanklacht tegen de eeuwigdurende oorlogsvoering. Het heeft een herkenbaar refrein, maar dit wordt wel wat vaak herhaald in de loop van de song.
Op 21 komt Around the world binnen van de Red Hot Chili Peppers, waarop ze nog wat teruggrijpen op hun oude geluid, met gerapte coupletten, scherpe gitaren en een funky geluid (in de coupletten althans). Het succes viel wat tegen, na Scar tissue: slechts de tipparade.
Op 30 zien we one-hitwonder Len (niet te verwarren met het momenteel ook genoteerde Lit), een Canadese (alternative) rockband. Het aanstekelijke Steal my sunshine valt vooral op door de doorlopende sample van More more more (Andrea True Connection), en verder ook door de prominente vrouwelijke vocalen (vrij zeldzaam in dit genre); de beide zangers zijn overigens broer en zus. Al werd de song veel gedraaid, hij bleef toch in NL in de tipparade steken.
Op 35 vinden we een samenwerking tussen Leftfield (Brits electronic music duo) en Afrika Bambaataa (Amerikaanse rapper en meer). Afrika shox is het resultaat, en dat klinkt zoals te verwachten behoorlijk dansbaar, elektronisch en vol met raps en samples. Niet echt hitmateriaal, maar wel geliefd in het alternatieve circuit.
Als laatste komt Guided by Voices binnen met Hold on hope, een ballad met emotionele lyrics en een sobere begeleiding. Ver gaat hij bij mij niet komen, omdat ik hem waarschijnlijk maar één keer op de radio gehoord heb. Niet getreurd, deze band gaat bij mij in de toekomst nog eens de eerste plaats halen.

Ondanks dat het een wereldnummer is, haalt Without you I'm nothing pas in zijn zevende week de eerste plek. Hoofdschuldige hiervoor is het eveneens geweldige Moving.
Anouk nestelt zich onder de grote namen van de Nederpop met dit R U kiddin' me, binnen op 19. Het nummer is een perfecte rocksong, met een goed inleefbare tekst en puntige gitaren, en dat levert haar opnieuw een nummer 2-hit in de top 40 op (na Nobody's wife). Enige minpuntje is dat het intro erg veel lijkt op dat van Maria (Blondie), dat eerder dit jaar een hit was.
Ocean Colour Scene, de band zonder profiel, zoals ik het ervaar, scoort alweer een flinke hit met Profit in peace, een aanklacht tegen de eeuwigdurende oorlogsvoering. Het heeft een herkenbaar refrein, maar dit wordt wel wat vaak herhaald in de loop van de song.
Op 21 komt Around the world binnen van de Red Hot Chili Peppers, waarop ze nog wat teruggrijpen op hun oude geluid, met gerapte coupletten, scherpe gitaren en een funky geluid (in de coupletten althans). Het succes viel wat tegen, na Scar tissue: slechts de tipparade.
Op 30 zien we one-hitwonder Len (niet te verwarren met het momenteel ook genoteerde Lit), een Canadese (alternative) rockband. Het aanstekelijke Steal my sunshine valt vooral op door de doorlopende sample van More more more (Andrea True Connection), en verder ook door de prominente vrouwelijke vocalen (vrij zeldzaam in dit genre); de beide zangers zijn overigens broer en zus. Al werd de song veel gedraaid, hij bleef toch in NL in de tipparade steken.
Op 35 vinden we een samenwerking tussen Leftfield (Brits electronic music duo) en Afrika Bambaataa (Amerikaanse rapper en meer). Afrika shox is het resultaat, en dat klinkt zoals te verwachten behoorlijk dansbaar, elektronisch en vol met raps en samples. Niet echt hitmateriaal, maar wel geliefd in het alternatieve circuit.
Als laatste komt Guided by Voices binnen met Hold on hope, een ballad met emotionele lyrics en een sobere begeleiding. Ver gaat hij bij mij niet komen, omdat ik hem waarschijnlijk maar één keer op de radio gehoord heb. Niet getreurd, deze band gaat bij mij in de toekomst nog eens de eerste plaats halen.

week 39 voor 1999 waarin niet heel veel gebeurt en de hoogste van slechts 3 binnenkomers pas op 31 staat. Volgende maand weer meer en betere aanwas.
