Death in Vegas' Aisha was voor mij toen wel echt een knaller en sowieso heel het album The Contino Sessions. Lekker ruig nummer met Iggy Pop (van wie een gastbijdrage toen nog redelijk bijzonder was) met een goed orgeltje. The Contino Sessions was destijds met The Fragile mijn favoriete album van het jaar. Toen in 2000 zowel Nine Inch Nails als Death in Vegas op Werchter stonden, moest ik daarheen natuurlijk. Ter plekke was het wel balen dat beide artiesten tegelijkertijd optraden. Achteraf heb ik NIN wel vaker gezien, maar Death in Vegas helaas uiteindelijk nooit in de toenmalige bezetting.

Sigur Rós kwam in Nederland in 2000 pas op de radar, maar toen was hun doorbraakplaat al wel een tijdje uit. Dit is uiteindelijk denk ik hun bekendste single uit die periode. Heb nog even gecheckt of ik geen eerdere singles van ze heb gemist, maar van het album Von uit 1997 zijn geen singles uitgekomen.

Van het Mexicaanse Titán sijpelde destijds het hitje Corazon door naar de Europese radio/tv-zenders. Ik weet niet meer of ik dit nu heb leren kennen via MTV's Alternative Nation of Kink FM (destijds eigenlijk mijn 2 voornaamste bronnen voor nieuwe muziek), maar een vrolijke indieplaat blijft het wel.

Five Fathoms van EBTG is destijds volstrekt langs me heen gegaan. Als ik het nu zo hoor is dit housegeluid misschien ook te volwassen om op de radio gedraaid te worden. Wel een hele goede plaat van ze, blij dat ik hem alsnog ontdekt heb.

Ook house, maar aanzienlijk minder volwassen, is Scoop's Drop It. Lekker plat plaatje dat destijds vaste prik was in de studentendisco. Grappig ook dat er een korte Otis Redding-sample in zit. Nu pas ontdekt, nooit geweten.

Geschreven in New York samen met David Morales. Hij kwam op het idee om er een soort van Village People vibe in te brengen. Het nummer werd een gay anthem, maar zo was het oorspronkelijk niet bedacht. Het nummer ging eigenlijk over de kinderen van een vriend van Neil Tennant die in de buurt van New York woonden en hoe graag zij naar de stad New York gingen.

Er zijn zo in de loop van de tijd bands geweest waarbij ik op bepaalde momenten helemaal kon wegsmelten zoals er is (was?) de band XTC.
Bepaalde momenten zeg ik, dat sluit niet uit dat er duidelijk mindere momenten waren.
Maar XTC vind ik vooral sterk wanneer het uiterst melodieus en zelfs dromerig overkomt. Stevig werk is niet goed aan de band besteed.

En als ik dan weer eens Greenman hoor, dat nummer voldoet aan alle XTC-eisen. Het album waar het op staat wordt ook hogelijk gewaardeerd.
Helaas is XTC alweer 25 jaar zo'n beetje van de aardbodem verdwenen, een laatste album verscheen in 2000.
Maar dat is dan zo'n band waar het je spijt dat er niet weer eens af en toe nieuw werk van verschijnt.

Dat geldt in zekere mate ook voor Joe Cocker. Daar heb ik dan een andere relatie mee, de man maakt andere muziek. Hij is dan ook alweer een behoorlijke tijd geleden overleden. Zo'n rocker die in de regel altijd aardige singles maakte en wiens albums je ook altijd kocht. Dat deed je voor Joe. En ook hem begin ik inmiddels wel eens te missen.

Buffalo Tom en Liam Gallagher hebben zich over een oudje van The Jam gebogen, Santana gaat zonder problemen door met een volgende single van Supernatural en Novastar is dan gelijk de op dat moment onbekende nieuwe jongeling. Niet onbegrijpelijk, Wrong is het debuut van de Nederlandse artiest uit Sittard. Mooi gedaan.

Het Deense Kashmir brengt weer een fraaie single uit, Graceland (geen connectie met Paul Simon), met herkenbare stem gezongen en een traditionele opbouw (steeds uitbundiger). Helaas zal de band, in NL althans, nooit commercieel succes krijgen.

Bernard Butler, de ex-gitarist van Suede, beleefde deze jaren een korte solocarrière. You must go on is geen opvallende single; Bernard heeft geen sterke stem, alleen het gitaargeluid op deze single is (niet zo merkwaardig) de moeite waard, verder vind ik het niet zo bijzonder.

Smooth mag wel de comeback-single van Santana genoemd worden; zijn laatste top 40-hit was al 14 jaar geleden. Zoals gewoonlijk zingt Santana niet zelf; ditmaal roept hij de hulp in van Rob Thomas, zanger van Matchbox 20. De single is een perfecte combinatie van een vlot liedje en het herkenbare gitaargeluid van Santana, en werd vooral in de VS een gigantisch succes. In NL bleeft Smooth zelfs in de tipparade steken, maar zou later, na het succes van Maria Maria, alsnog de top 40 halen. Mijn collega musician is al bij de volgende single, bij mij komt Smooth binnen. De videoclip heeft overigens 385 miljoen views op Youtube, dat is best wel veel.

Op 37 komt Blessid Union of Souls binnen, alweer een Amerikaanse 'alternative' rockgroep (aanhalingstekens van mij, want erg alternatief klinkt het niet in mijn oren), met Hey Leonardo. De band doet aan veel namedropping in de lyrics (Leonardo verwijst naar Dicaprio), de ondertitel is She likes me for me, en dat wordt ook veel vaker gezongen. Opmerkelijk is dat deze plaat volgende week alweer uit mijn top 40 valt; dat betekent dat ik er in tweede instantie toch weinig aan vond.

Onderaan zien we de Pet Shop Boys, met New York City boy. Op deze single horen we wat nieuwe invloeden (een zwart mannenkoortje), maar ook vertrouwde (disco)klanken. Bij mij komen de heren niet hoog meer, en in de NL top 40 is dit hun laatste wapenfeit. Toch hebben ze ook dit jaar weer nieuwe muziek uitgebracht.

week 40 voor 1999 met net als vorige week 3 binnenkomers maar hier verwacht ik veel meer van dan die van toen die nu ook nauwelijks stijgen.
Hoogste nieuwe voor de noorse Lene Marlin, ca een half jaar voor Nederland haar leerde kennen met Sitting Down Here was deze single al een hit in zweden, finland en gek genoeg Frankrijk. Des te opvallender omdat deze in frankrijk top 5 haalde en verreweg haar grootste hit blijft.
Verder Killing Heidi, altrock/punkpop uit Australie en Fungus, alt rock uit Zweden.

Weinig reuring bovenin, teveel sterke nummers die een beetje wisselen, het venijn van 1999 zal wel in de staart gaan zitten met nog wat knallers.
De hoogste nieuwe komt van een zangeres die in Eternal zat. Eternal had blijkbaar een soort schrikbewind van de 2 Bennett zusjes die langzaam de boel tot duo verkleinden. Ook Kelle werd dus de groep op vrij onvriendelijke manier uitgewerkt en start haar solo carriere met enorm veilige Gabrielle esque MOR popsoul. Gelukkig gooit de platenmaatschappij er een zak geld tegenaan, want alle segmenten moeten bediend worden, voor de clubs wordt De Funk aangetrokken en die zetten Kelle in een 80's disco met Chic achtig gitaartje dat naar een toegankelijke houseplaat leidt.
Verder de opvolger voor Alex Gopher's The child en ook de Pet Shop Boys.
En David Bowie krijgt extra feature, volgens mij zei herman al eerder dat dit niet 1 van de bekendste Bowies is, maar ik vind het nummer steeds fraaier worden en de top 20 gaat ook wel bereikt worden nog bij mij.

nieuw:
Out of Control vind ik misschien wel de beste single van Surrender van de Chemical Brothers. Fijne opzwepende beat (wel geleend van Bobby Orlando dacht ik). En altijd goed om Bernard Sumner en Bobby Gillespie te horen.

The High Llamas is een zijproject van Sean O'Hagan van Stereolab, die voor de gelegenheid de zangeressen van die band ook heeft weten te strikken. Mooie dromerig liedje dat zo van de 'Lab had kunnen zijn.

Ook dromerig is Spanish Dance Troupe van het Welshe Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. Maar achter die dromerigheid gaat wel een grappige tekst schuil.

Van Beth Orton had ik destijds 2 albums geloof ik, maar ik vond het altijd moeilijk ze helemaal uit te zitten. Dit liedje vond ik dan wel erg fijn, maar moet zeggen dat het nu op het nippertje binnenkomt en waarschijnlijk volgende week weer weg is. Mooie stem, maar toch ook wat saai.

En als artiesten dan inmiddels al weer wat jaartjes actief zijn gaan ze zich ook richten op allerlei wisselende projecten.
Zo kwam Bryan Ferry met een (door mij sterk afgewaardeerd) album waar hij met covers uit de jaren '30, '40 en '50 aan de slag gaat.
Ik had/heb zo iets van 'waar zijn we helemaal mee bezig' want het gebodene in het algemeen is mager en de waardering is vaak laag.
Liever zou je nieuw werk van de artiest zien, ook voor Ferry geldt dat zijn laatste album alweer gauw vijf jaar eerder was.
Maar goed, het nummer As time goes by weet de toets der kritiek nog net te doorstaan.

Dat geldt ook voor No other baby van Paul McCartney. Ook hij begint in 1999 met het coveren van rock 'n roll songs uit de jaren '50. Echt zeldzaam, McCartney is een man van eigen songs. Maar ja, dat verleden. 'Moet dat' was ook hier mijn eerste reactie.
Maar ook No other baby redt het en gaat door naar de volgende ronde.

Mijn ontdekking van de week is echter Blessid Union of Souls. Een viertal albums tussen 1995 en 2005 maar mij zegt het helemaal niets. Zo mag je ook wel weer eens wat moois nieuws tussen al het nieuwe aanbod ontdekken.

Zeven binnenkomers maar liefst deze week. De hoogste nieuwe (erg knap) is voor debutant Novastar, de band rond de in België woonachtige Nederlander Joost Zweegers. Wrong is een sterke song, met fraaie stem gezongen, goed geproduceerd met zinvolle vioolpartijen, en vooral een overtuigende tekst. Novastar werd echt een radioartiest, maar de single bleef toch maar steken in de Tipparade. Later kwam het toch goed met de waardering, want de song staat al jaren genoteerd in de Top 2000.

You'll follow me down is alweer de vierde sterke single op rij van Skunk Anansie (bij mij 3 nummer 1-hits en een nummer 2-hit). Dit is een ballad met weer geen al te vrolijke inslag, maar Skin zingt weer erg meeslepend en de melodie blijft goed hangen. Na deze hit zou het vreemd genoeg 10 jaar duren voordat Skunk Anansie bij mij weer gaat scoren.

De Manic Street Preachers komen op 25 binnen met Black dog on my shoulder. Gewoonlijk halen de Manics in deze jaren mijn top 5 gemakkelijk, maar deze blijft steken op 21. Dat is niet omdat hij niet zo goed is, maar omdat ik hem te weinig op de radio gehoord heb. Sterker nog, als ik de discografie van de band bekijk, wordt dit niet als single genoemd. Nou ja, het is wel een erg fraaie song, rijk aan melodie en flink wat violen, het had een beter lot verdiend.

De carrière van Moby loopt niet erg gelijk tussen de top 40 en mijn eigen lijst. Ik zie dat hij al heel wat top 40-noteringen heeft gehad die bij mij niets gedaan hadden (Go, enz.) en deze Why does my heart feel so bad wordt bij mij zijn eerste top 10 hit en ook grootste hit, maar blijft in de tipparade steken. Toch is deze wel een klassieker geworden die je nog vaak kan horen, misschien omdat hij beter op de radio past dan zijn eerdere hits. De song is gebaseerd op samples van de gospelsong He'll roll your burdens away van The Bank Brothers.

Creed scoort zijn tweede hit (bij mij) met Higher. De sound is erg vergelijkbaar met What's this life for, met grunge-achtige opbouw en een stevig (gitaar)geluid. Het refrein is aardig, maar niet bijzonder.

Wyclef Jean (bekend van The Fugees) bouwt aan een aardige solocarrière. Na zijn nummer 1-hit (bij mij) Gone till November, is New life zijn tweede hit. De productie is ouderwetse jazzy soul. De vocalen zijn deels gerapt, maar grotendeels gezongen. In de tekst bedankt Wyclef zijn moeder voor het hem opvoeden zonder vaderfiguur.

En op 36 zien we warempel weer The Eurythmics verschijnen. De band was zo'n 10 jaar eerder uit elkaar gegaan, waarna solocarrières volgden van Annie en David. Maar in 1999 brengen ze nog een keer een album uit (Peace) en I saved the world today is de leadsingle. De sound is behoorlijk verschillend met de grote hits, geen synthesizers maar fraaie organische klanken, passend bij wat oudere musici. De ballad heeft wat melancholisch; de stem van Annie is nog even sterk als vroeger en de trompetjes maken het af.

nieuw:
12: Autopulver scoort goed met een heerlijk stekelig gitaarliedje. De coupletten zijn wat cheesy (here comes my luvverrr), maar alle rest is uitstekend. Je hoeft maar 1 keer in je leven zo'n refrein te schrijven en 25 jaar later ben je nog verre van vergeten.
24: Moby's Play vind ik eigenlijk maar niets, maar enkele nummers zijn heel goed te doen en dit 'Why Does My Heart Feels So Bad' is gewoon ontroerend. Het originele refrein komt van een oude gospelplaat van The Banks Brothers (He'll Roll Your Burdens Away).
29: Geen idee meer waarom ik destijds de single van Mouse on Mars' Distroia kocht, maar het is nog altijd een heerlijk stukje elektronica, poppy en noisy tegelijk.
30: Chicks on Speed heb ik wel een zwak voor. Ook een keer live gezien met een wat rommelig optreden, dat ik geweldig vond i.t.t. mijn toenmalige vriendin die er niets mee kon. Dit nummer is een cover van Malaria! dacht ik en ze komen er goed mee weg.
34: Pavement is aan zijn laatste adem bezig, voor ze er voorlopig mee ophouden. Major Leagues is een prima countryballad in de traditie van Range Life, maar haalt dat niveau zeker niet. Toch een prima plaat.
38: EPMD samplet Gainsbourg's Requiem Pour Un Con uit 1968, een van de oudste platen die ik een hiphopbeat toedicht. Blijkbaar hebben meer mensen dat zo gehoord.
40: Geen idee wie erachter P.S. I Love You zit, maar dit is wel een leuke tongue-in-cheek nummer over Kevin Shields waar je lange tijd niets meer van hoorde. Uiteindelijk zou er pas in 2013 een opvolger komen van Loveless uit 1991.
