De oude David Crosby is inmiddels overleden, een allerlaatste reünie van Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young zal nooit meer gebeuren.
In 1999 verraste de band nog wel vriend en vijand door met nieuw album te verschijnen. Het laatste als viertal, zal later blijken.
Eenvoudig was dat nog niet, het is pas het derde album sinds 1970.
De gebeurtenis op zich kun je natuurlijk niet zomaar voorbij laten gaan. Hoewel de tijden uiteraard nogal veranderd waren de afgelopen 30 jaar. Weten ook CSN&Y op de song Looking forward.
Het nummer wordt ook omringd door binnenkomende songs van allemaal nieuwe bands. Alleen met Madness hadden we al kennis gemaakt in 1979.
Tijd om het album Looking forward weer eens van stal te halen, morgen.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor de productieve Charlatans, inmiddels hun 12e entry in mijn top 40. Maar ook hun op een na laatste. Forever klinkt wat zwaarder en indringender dan gebruikelijk, met stevig orgelgebruik, en dat bevalt mij goed: deze wordt hun op een na grootste hit bij mij (na The only one I know natuurlijk).
De Foo Fighters waren al een paar jaar actief, maar Learn to fly is voor mij wel hun signature song, ontzettend aanstekelijk, opbouwend, onverwoestbaar en ook nog een iconische grappige videoclip. Het is ook hun tweede en grootste top 40 hit, maar verder dan 32 komt hij toch niet. Bij mij wordt het veruit hun grootste hit.
Hetzelfde geldt voor Why does it always rain on me van Travis: hun signature song, hun doorbraakhit die nooit meer overtroffen werd. De tekst is wat deprimerend, maar de muziek nog wel redelijk vlot, waardoor het allemaal niet te zwaar wordt. Opvallend is dat hij de oorzaak van zijn pech zoekt in een fout die hij ooit begaan heeft, slechte karma dus.
Op 37 scoort Marc Anthony alweer zijn tweede hit bij mij. De Puertoricaanse zanger zingt latin-american liedjes. Ook op I need to know swingt het behoorlijk, maar het is ook een sterke song met een herkenbaar refrein. Het genre bereikt mijn lijst niet zo vaak maar hier is helemaal niets mis mee (in tegentelling tot de slappe hap die collega Enrique Iglesias bv. uitbrengt).
En op 38 vinden we de Ierse Cranberries met het lichtvoetige, vertrouwd klinkende Just my imagination, waar in Dolores O'Riordan (opnieuw) herinneringen uit haar jeugd ophaalt. Hoewel dit nog fris en prettig klinkt, moeten we achteraf concluderen dat hiermee hun carrière zo goed als afgelopen is.

week 42 voor 1999 waarin als hoogste nieuwe Nine Inch Nails. Ik weet nog dat ik in Rotterdam in De Vlerk was en dit nummer hoorde. Natuurlijk meteen herkend als NIN; ik wist wel dat er een album was maar had er weinig aandacht aan besteed. Maar na het horen van dit nummer op volle sterkte had ik binnen een week het album gekocht bij de plaatboef. Ik heb het altijd maar vreemd gevonden eigenlijk., zo'n driedubbelalbum uitbrengen zo kort voor de eeuwwisseling, veel te laat voor welk overzicht (jaar, decennium, eeuw) dan ook.
Chicks on Speed zijn wel goed in covers, ik heb ze ooit leren kennen via Wordy Rappinghood en ook deze Delta 5 cover klinkt prima.

dEUS' Sister Dew is inmiddels de 300 punten kaap gepasseerd en na Unfinished Sympathy en Fools Gold de meest succesvolle hit voor mij in dit topic. Blijft een prachtig nummer en ik was ook blij te ontdekken dat alle b-sides uit dit tijdperk ook eindelijk op Spotify staan, alsmede een paar nieuwe nummers/versies/demo's die ik nog niet kende. Van de albums die ik goed ken uit deze tijd vind ik het leuk ook alle b-sides te luisteren en tegenwoordig zijn die makkelijker beschikbaar dan destijds (nog los van dat je alle singles fysiek moest kopen).
Qua nieuwe entries springt Les Rythmes Digitales' nieuwste (en bekendste) er wel bovenuit. Heerlijke plaat, wellicht nog net iets beter in de clubversie. Wat zonde toch dat Stuart Price niet nog een tweede album heeft gemaakt met dit project.
Heel wat lager zien we Novastar debuteren. Ik dacht dat The Best Is Yet To Come ouder was dan Wrong, maar blijkbaar zat ik fout. Of het beste nog moet komen betwijfel ik, want Wrong was altijd mijn favoriete nummer van Novastar en een tijdje zelfs een van mijn favoriete nummers tout court. Zo'n vaart loopt het nu niet meer, maar toch een fraaie plaat.
Murry The Hump zegt me werkelijk helemaal niets, maar ik vond dit wel een prettig rustig gitaarliedje, ergens tussen Semisonic, Jayhawks en Pavement ofzo.
Appliance stond in die tijd op London Calling. Ik herinner me werkelijk niets meer van het concert, maar wel dat ik het album kocht op een beurs ofzo en dat er bij thuiskomst het verkeerde schijfje in bleek te zitten (wel van Appliance, maar dan een 1-track single ofzo). Vele jaren later alsnog het album gekocht omdat ik het toevallig tegenkwam, maar omdat de interesse er niet meer zo was nauwelijks beluisterd. En weer wat jaren later komen ze hier binnen met toch wel een prima krautpopnummer.

Ik heb niet zo vaak een Nederlandse plaat op 1, maar Junkie XL is het gelukt, wie had dat gedacht? En Skunk Anansie maakt een reuzesprong van 15 naar 4.
De hoogste nieuwe is het debuut (bij mij) van Nine Inch Nails, een industrial rockband uit Cleveland. We're in this together is een overrompelende song, vooral in combinatie met de sterke clip. Het geluid is direct stevig en vuig, maar als het refrein in wordt gezet, gaat er echt wat door je heen. En die intensiteit houdt het hele nummer stand.
Kan het ook wat lichter? Ja natuurlijk, ik had toen nog een brede smaak

Er waren in de jaren 90 veel boybands, en hun meeste songs halen het niet tot mijn top 40, maar veel van die bands hadden ineens één heel aanstekelijk nummer, waar je alleen maar vrolijk van kan worden en dat zelfs niet gaat vervelen. Voor Five is dat Keep on moving. De band had 10 top 40-hits, en dit is wel hun grootste geworden. Bij mij blijft het bij deze ene, op een heel kleine notering in 2001 na.
De singles van The Chemical Brothers blijven over ons heen buitelen, op 37 alweer een nieuwe van de danceact, Out of control. Inmiddels klinkt het steeds vertrouwder, met een stevige beat en een simpel refrein. En natuurlijk weer de nodige aparte klanken om het nog een beetje vernieuwend te houden.

The Cranberries was typisch zo'n band die me destijds niet meer zo boeide, veel te druk ik was met moeilijkere en verantwoordere muziek. In retrospect is het natuurlijk een prachtig melancholisch popnummer.

Bill Callahan bracht lange tijd muziek uit als Smog, maar heel anders is dat eigenlijk niet ten opzichte van later werk. Lo-fi folkrock met donkere, verhalende teksten en minimale instrumentatie, dit nummer voelt nog een soort van poppy.
34. The Cinematic Orchestra - Diabolus
Een release van begin dit jaar, die ik met een bezemactie nog tegenkwam. Hele album vind ik vaak wat saai (laat staan een concert), maar dit is wel een hele goede groovende jazzy filmische plaat.
37. My Ruin - Terror
Volgens mij had ik destijds een verzamelaar met allerlei nu-metal en aanverwanten van een blad als 'Rocksound', waar dit op stond. Eigenlijk vond ik het een van de weinige leuke nummers van die verzamelaar en ook nu kan ik het nog goed hebben. Een beetje rauw en feministisch, muzikaal wel richting metal maar dan meer met een punk-houding.
39. Hermann & Kleine - Transalpin
Zo'n nummer dat altijd weer fijn klinkt, maar je in je hoofd nooit weet te reproduceren. Het is dan ook meer de sound dan het liedje dat het hier goed doet. En die sound is voor die tijd typische warme ingetogen glitchy elektronica/downtempo.

De créme de la créme van de erkende alternatieve rock namen uit de jaren '90 komen maar weer eens voorbij. Ik wilde schrijven puur toeval maar dat is bij deze nadrukkelijk aanwezige bands natuurlijk niet zo. Ze waren ook nog eens goed, dus dat kan geen problemen opleveren. Zelfs Coldplay was nog alleraardigst in die eerste jaren.
Uiteraard val ik ook voor een nieuwe Bond-song, ditmaal vertolkt door Garbage.
De onderlinge verschillen zijn niet eens zo heel erg groot. Wie ooit dan ook de meeste punten van dit achttal ooit gaat halen is voorlopig ongewis.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor Alanis Morissette. Op That I would be good is duidelijk een andere zangeres te horen dan op haar eerste album: meer introspectief, minder boos. Het is een mooie ingetogen ballad met een eenvoudige opbouw en een opvallende dwarsfluit aan het eind. Hits scoren werd wel steeds lastiger voor haar; deze blijft in de tipparade steken.
Op 33 zien we The Kelly Family binnenkomen, en dat is best opmerkelijk. In 1979 scoorden ze een grote hit bij mij met David's song, maar alle hits uit de jaren 90 hield ik buiten mijn lijst; tot deze Mystic knights dan. Het is een vrolijk, licht folky song over mysterieuze ridders die ons redden, met veel verschillende leadzangers en ik denk ook wel een doedelzak, aan het eind. En bij deze kleine notering blijft het ook voor deze muzikale familie.
De Amerikaanse Counting Crows zien we op 34 met Hanginaround, een typische midtempo song met een makkelijk refrein, een herkenbare stem, wat koortjes en een aardig gitaarriffje. Niets bijzonders, maar wel prettig.
The 3 Jays (niet te verwarren met de Nederlandse 3 J's) is een Britse danceact dat met Feeling it too hun enige hit scoort (in NL). Het gitaartje klinkt nogal bekend, van Modjo denk ik, maar de song is verder meer dance, bijna tranceachtig. Opvallend genoeg is er op het internet weinig over de band te vinden; in plaats daarvan krijg je, ook in het Engels, verwijzingen naar de Volendamse band.
Op 37 vinden we de boze mannen van Rage against the Machine. Op Guerrilla radio is er nog weinig veranderd, nog steeds horen we de felle lyrics van Zack de la Rocha en agressieve riffs; toch lijkt de oprechte woede nu toch iets afgenomen; het gaat ook over de muziek die radiostations draaien, dat is toch wat minder serieus dan wereldpolitiek.

Het gitaartje klinkt nogal bekend, van Modjo denk ik, maar de song is verder meer dance, bijna tranceachtig. Opvallend genoeg is er op het internet weinig over de band te vinden; in plaats daarvan krijg je, ook in het Engels, verwijzingen naar de Volendamse band.
Op 37 vinden we de boze mannen van Rage against the Machine. Op Guerrilla radio is er nog weinig veranderd, nog steeds horen we de felle lyrics van Zack de la Rocha en agressieve riffs; toch lijkt de oprechte woede nu toch iets afgenomen; het gaat ook over de muziek die radiostations draaien, dat is toch wat minder serieus dan wereldpolitiek.
