27: The Flaming Lips' Waitin' for a Superman stond al even in de tiplijst, maar valt de laatste week ineens wat beter. Misschien de tijd van het jaar: kortere dagen, feestdagen in aantocht, hoop ellende in de wereld... het is me in ieder geval wel duidelijk dat de Superman vandaag niet gearriveerd is.
31: She's The One deed het al erg goed in de originele versie van World Party, maar de versie van Robbie Williams (die heel dicht bij het origineel blijft) vind ik ook fraai. Ook al zo'n sentimenteel nummer...
34: Broadcast komt met de eerste single van een van mijn favoriete albums. Ook geen vrolijk liedje, maar wel heel erg ingetogen en zeer fraai.
35: Ingetogen is de knalharde drum & bass van Reprazent-lid (DJ) Krust zeker niet. Heerlijke opzwepende plaat.
36: Freestyler was destijds vaste prik op de uitgaansavonden, zeker in de versie met het lange intro zodat de dansvloer alvast vol kon stromen voordat het nummer echt begint. Leuke pophit, leuke herinneringen en ook goed meme-materiaal.

Het is in die zin een beetje een treurige dag voor de oude Genesis liefhebbers: het allerlaatste studiowerk van de band ooit werd eind 1999 opgenomen. Ik meen ter promotie van een Greatest Hits.

Het nummer was al eerder in 1974 opgenomen voor het album The Lamb Lies down on Broadway. Maar voor de nieuwe opname werd gekozen voor Trevor Horn als producer en was er een reünie van de hele band nog eens nodig. Hoe zullen ze naar elkaar hebben gekeken.

Zowel Peter Gabriel als Phil Collins namen vocalen voor hun rekening.
Helaas waren de verhoudingen niet dusdanig dat het heeft geleid tot de vraag: zullen we nog eens een keer.
En dat is jammer, want, even afgezien van Collins, mankeren de bandleden tot op dit ogenblik helemaal niks. Gabriel kwam in 2024 met een geweldig solo-album, dat geldt ook voor Steve Hackett. Volgens mij mankeren Mike Rutherford en Tony Banks ook niets en zijn ze allemaal net 70. Spijtig.

Maar voor de liefhebbers is The Carpet crawlers 1999 alleraardigst nieuw werk en is er een prima single neergezet.

Voor de derde keer (en laatste) weet Skunk Anansie de top te bereiken. Maar lang lijkt dat niet te gaan duren, want de Foo Fighters stijgen van 10 naar 3.

De hoogste nieuwe is van debutant Day One, een band uit Bristol, en getekend op het label van Massive Attack. De song heeft weinig rhythm, maar is gebouwd op celloklanken, en de halfgesproken vocalen. Op de clip klonk dit eerlijk gezegd vrij onbeholpen, vals zelfs, maar de studio-opname klinkt een stuk gepolijster. Het resultaat is vrij duister, en commercieel succes bleef uit.

Op 35 komt Bush binnen met The chemicals between us. Het geluid is tegelijk wat cleaner (ritmetrack) en scherper (de gitaar). Per saldo heb je dan toch weer een sterke sound, uiteraard mede dankzij de vocalen van Rossdale.

Op 36 zien we de vrolijke punkpop van Blink 182 met What's my age again, hun debuut bij mij. De tekst begrijp ik toch niet helemaal, ze klagen erover dat niemand je leuk vindt als je 23 bent; zijn ze dan al te oud of nog te jong? De clip is wel gewaagd, de drie leden lopen de hele tijd door de straten van de stad geheel naakt (gevoelige lichaamsdelen zijn wel geblurred). Een succesvolle strategie was het wel, dit bereikte onze tipparade direct al.

Als laatste komt Robbie Williams binnen, die nu al een paar jaar solo singles uitbrengt, maar nog steeds niet echt is doorgebroken; de meeste singles eindigen in de tipparade. Met She's the one weet hij nipt de top 40 te halen. De song is een cover van World Party, en Karl Wallinger was er niet blij mee, vooral omdat Robbie beweerde dat hij het zelf geschreven had (een onhoudbare claim natuurlijk). Het liedje is een traditionele ballad, met gevoelige piano en uiteraard veel violen naar het einde toe. In de UK werd het zijn tweede nummer 1-hit.

Vanwege mijn vakantie plaats ik alvast mijn lijsten voor de komende twee weken. Ik hoop dat het geen probleem is voor AngeloV

Angelica, geen idee meer hoe ik die ontdekte maar heeft 2 heerlijke albums gemaakt; later ontdekte ik nog de band Lovely Eggs en nog weer later kwam ik er achter dat die dezelfde zangeres hebben. Interessant.
Vyvyan heb ik ooit gekocht omdat ze op Sympathy for the Record Industry zaten én een cover van Mickey op hun EP hadden. Dat moest wel goed zijn, en dat was het ook.

Swastika Eyes vond ik destijds een geweldig nummer van Primal Scream. Was ook even vaste prik bij het uitgaan, maar volgens mij is het inmiddels wel een beetje een vergeten nummer. De bekende versie is trouwens een remix van producer Jagz Kooner, die in de 90's Sabres of Paradise vormde met Andrew Weatherall. Weatherall zien we waarschijnlijk volgende week terug met een remix (waarvan ik niet wist dat het een remix was).

Thee Maddkatt Courtship III = Felix da Housecat, die zich over een paar jaar als een van de vaandeldragers van de electroclash rage zal ontpoppen. Het nummer My Life Muzik heeft al een beetje die dromerige sfeer die je ook op zijn volgende 2 albums terugvindt, maar dan zonder het glitter en glamour sausje.

Travis bracht in korte tijd 3 singles met steeds een 4-letterig woord als titel. Voor mij hun beste 3 nummers denk ik. Turn is de eerste, Sing (de beste) en Side komen nog.

Deze van Basement Jaxx was ik een beetje vergeten, ook niet echt een nummer dat ik toen veel heb gehoord (i.t.t. de singles hiervoor). Een beetje hysterisch, maar daardoor juist wel leuk.

Zombie Nation's Kernkraft 400 is een van de weinige commerciële hits die ik toen nog heb meegekregen. Achteraf wel een klassieker geworden, ik hoor hem ook regelmatig op tv als voetballiefhebber, want dit is de stadiontune van PSV. Overigens heb ik de persoon hierachter ooit nog eens een tijdje backstage gesproken toen hij bij een zelf georganiseerd feest draaide. Echt een superaardige gast.

David Bowie's laatste single haalt ternauwernood mijn lijst. Waar Thursday's Child echt de diepte in gaat, vind ik dit een wat gemiddeld rockplaatje en een van zijn minste singles uit de 90's (ik denk de minste, samen met Miracle Goodnight).

Het gelukzalige gevoel van zes prachtige nieuwe binnenkomers.

Het doet een beetje denken aan het ontroerende gevoel dat je als kind kon hebben als je op de kleuterschool bij het knikkeren je al je melkies weer terugkreeg nadat je ze allemaal had verloren. Met je vingertje had je aarde weggepulkt tussen de muur van de school en de eerste rij stenen van het schoolplein. Groot genoeg om de knikkers in op te vangen.

Dan waren er altijd grote jongens die beter konden knikkeren en misschien beter konden valsspelen. Je liet je nog intimideren. Maar ja, je zat op een progressieve school en daar was de afspraak: alle knikkers die je verloor bij het edele spel kreeg je weer terug. Ook al was het een hele zak met melkies.
Dus al stond bij het verlies het huilen nader dan het lachen, er was altijd het gelukzalige moment dat je ze allemaal weer terugkreeg.

Dat gevoel dus bij deze nieuwe binnenkomers, waar met name Geneva, Gomez en Muse geweldig hebben uitgepakt met het nieuwe werk. Hoewel ik Bowie, The Offspring en Supergrass zeker niets te kort wil doen.
Ik vind het aanbod tot nu toe in 1999 geweldig.

week 46 voor 1999 waarin de top 10 vrijwel gelijk blijft en er 4 binnenkomers zijn, waarvan wel eentje flink hoog. Ik twijfelde wel over de releasedatum van Fiona's single maar zag op youtube dat ze dit nummer al op 19-11 bij Leno en twee weken later bij Letterman speelde, dus moet kunnen.
Bij Belinda dacht ik aan een vroege kerstsingle maar dat valt mee; lang niet zo goed als haar 80s hit maar het blijft toch Belinda.

Redelijk wat vers bloed, maar bovenin zit het nog vast. Hoogste nieuwe is voor Filter, met het fraaie Take A Picture. Mooie ballad van de band die verder vooral bekend staat om hun hoge herriegehalte.

Kent zien we ook weer terug, met een van hun beste singles tot nu toe. Het gaat mij hier om de Zweedstalige versie, de Engelstalige heb ik nog niet langs zien komen.

Death in Vegas' Neptune City is in de albumversie blijkbaar al een remix (van dhr. Weatherall). Goed nummer, maar toch geen Aisha. Voelt voor mij ook meer als albumtrack dan als single eigenlijk, maar een albumtrack van een van de beste albums van het jaar komt natuurlijk redelijk stevig binnen.

Hetzelfde geldt voor de Nederlandse producer Martijn "Alden Tyrrel" Hoogendijk, wiens Love Explosion ik vooral ken van het grandioze mixalbum Mixed Up In The Hague van I-F, dat volgend jaar uitkomt en boordevol steengoede italo staat.

The Beta Band is toch ook wel een bijzondere band, met hun knotsgekke psychedelische sound. Muziek om vrolijk van te worden.

Hybrid zegt me niets, maar Julee Cruise natuurlijk wel. Hoewel ik haar stemgeluid hier eerlijk gezegd niet direct had gelinkt aan haar eigen muziek, is dit toch gewoon een dikke progressive house track.

Van Elevator Suite heb ik zo rond 2000/2001 blind de cd gekocht voor vrijwel niets, tijdens een vakantie in Zeeland. Ik dacht dat het britpop was, maar het is meer een mix van downtempo, triphop en spoken word. Echt een typisch 90s ding, zo op de valreep van het decennium.
