Rustig weekje afgezien van een nieuwe nummer 1.

Kings of Convenience komen binnen met een volgende single, die ik weer iets beter vind dan de voorganger. Mooi rustig liedje van deze Noren.

Bloodhound Gang's Mope vond ik altijd al tof, maar je hoorde hem eigenlijk maar weinig. Waarschijnlijk omdat de voorgaande single The Bad Touch een wel heel lange houdbaarheidsdatum had, voor mijn gevoel hoorde je die 2 jaar lang op elke disco-avond. Mope is natuurlijk erg melig, met een referentie naar Falco, een rol voor Pacman en sterk leunen op Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax, maar ik vind het in dit geval wel leuk.

Chicks on Speed's Glamour Girl heb ik zo vaak gehoord dat het me verbaast dat dit een eigen nummer is. Het had ook zo een cover van een 50's/60's popplaat kunnen zijn voor mijn gevoel, maar het is geschreven door de groep zelf i.s.m. Christopher Just, die hier een tijd terug langskwam met I'm A Disco Dancer.

Zed Bias is een ontdekking voor mij. Goede 2-step plaat uit het VK. Typisch Britse dansmuziek.

An Pierlé is dan weer een vondst via het StuBru-archief dat Marzipaintree vorige week onder de aandacht bracht. Destijds kende ik iemand die het album veel draaide en dat was niet zo verkeerd, al vond mijn toenmalige vriendin het vreselijk. Bij mij is vooral Tower (de volgende single) blijven hangen, maar deze eerste single is ook al fijn. Ze werd destijds wel eens de Belgische Tori Amos genoemd, dus dan weet je in welke hoek je het moet zoeken.

Bush' Letting The Cables Sleep vond ik destijds een draak, maar ik was dan ook net afgehaakt bij deze band. Nu vind ik het eigenlijk wel fraai en een goed alternatief voor het doodgedraaide Glycerine, hun andere bekende ballad.

Tien weken op 1 voor The Chemical Brothers! Dat moet haast wel een record zijn. Ik ben bezig om alle oude lijsten op een rij te zetten, maar dat gaat in een tempo van een lijst of drie per week, dus het duurt vast nog een jaar of twee voordat ik zoiets zeker weet. De oudjes doen het nog goed, met roots in de jaren '70 voor de Eurythmics, David Bowie (60's zelfs) en Sting.
De band Eurythmics liep in 2000 op haar laatste benen, dat is wel waar. In voortbestaan dan, de single is nog prima.

Ja, en de Foo Fighters, Bush en Marilyn Manson hebben hun carriere eind jaren '80, begin jaren '90 gestart.
Die van Manson is eigenlijk een promo uit 1999 maar het is goed dat Ranboy het nummer nog even naar voren haalt. Het is een sterk nummer en ik had het zelf nog niet eerder genoteerd staan.

Sting weet met een goede neus voor de beste singles zijn wat mindere albums te verbloemen.
David Bowie is aan zijn zoveelste carriere bezig. Niet erg en ik vind Survive buitengewoon bekend en vertrouwenwekkend klinken.

Muse staat voorlopig onbedreigd op 1.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor de band die zich min of meer heeft heruitgevonden: geen ruige rauwe funkrocksongs meer, maar uitgebalanceerde rockballads met hier en daar nog een schep randje. Otherside van de Red Hot Chili Peppers voldoet helemaal aan deze omschrijving; het enige wat mij verbaasde is dat de single niet eens de tipparade haalde, terwijl het toch wel een klassieker is geworden.

Dark Star is een Britse psychedelische band, dat met Graceadelica hun hoogtepunt beleeft. De sound is dreigend, met een prominente bas en wat eigenwijze drumpartij. De song is uit 1998 en stond toen op een EP; in 2000 werd een remix uitgebracht en die werd een kleine hit in de UK. Ik neem aan dat dat ook de versie is die ik toen op de radio hoorde.

De succesjaren van Tröckener Kecks lagen toch wel in het begin van de jaren 90, maar ook in 2000 waren ze nog relevant actief. Net als bij de RHCP is het tempo en de ruigheid wat teruggeschroefd, maar tekstueel werden ze alleen maar sterker. Niemand thuis kent een duidelijk melancholische ondertoon, en de saxofoonsolo aan het eind geeft het nog wat meer sfeer. Dit wist toch weer de tipparade te bereiken en is dus een van hun bekendste songs geworden.

De vierde binnenkomer is voor William Orbit, een Britse componist en producer, die al veel bekendheid genoot, o.a. voor de productie van het album Ray of light van Madonna. Met Barber's Adagio for strings wist hij ook solo een hit te scoren. Gebaseerd op het klassieke stuk van Samuel Barber bouwde Orbit dit om tot een zeer dansbare versie die het uitstekend deed in de clubs, maar ook op de radio. De hitversie is overigens wel een remixversie door Ferry Corsten.

Otherside haalde gewoon de 14e plek in de Top 40

Dat had ik ook gedacht, maar bij het checken zag ik hem niet staan. Tijd voor een sterkere bril .

Dit is echter de "bewust vergeten" rnb periode van Alicia Moore alias P!NK die met There you go debuteert, wat ik eigenlijk 1 van haar echt leuke nummers vindt (het meeste uit haar oeuvre valt voor mij uiteen in zeurplaten (Don't let me get me, Try, Sober) of pose neprock (So what).
En natuurlijk de maatschappelijk ontverantwoorde Notorious met Jennifer vrolijk lachend vanaf een bankje, niet wetend dat ze in 2025 weleens ten onder kan gaan met Diddy/Puffy/Puff Daddy/Love/P.Diddy, nummer is niks mis mee en Simon Le Bon en co kunnen de huur van hun jachten ook weer storten.

Een rustig weekje, met weinig reuring bovenin en slechts 4 nieuwe binnenkomers. Hoogste nieuwe is een ontdekking via de Afrekening van Studio Brussel. Gorki's We Zijn Zo Jong is de eerste single van Eindelijk Vakantie!, een van mijn favoriete albums van 2000 en voor mij de eerste topsingle met releasejaar 2000. Vorig jaar overigens ook nog fraai gecoverd door Aafke Romeijn, n.a.v. de 10e sterfdag van Luc de Vos.

Super Furry Animals begon ik in die tijd een beetje beter te leren kennen via mijn toenmalige vriendin, die ik net had leren kennen. Zij was meer fan dan ik, al trok dat gaandeweg redelijk bij. Do Or Die is 2 minuten onstuimige gitaarpop, een beetje a la Song #2. Maar de titel komt dan weer van een speech van Mahatma Gandhi uit 1942, die zijn volk verzocht zich zonder geweld te verzetten tegen de toenmalige Britse machthebbers in India. Gruff Rhys vond het een leuk idee dat mensen wild heen en weer konden springen op een nummer met 'Ghandi teksten'.

Kosmonova's Acid Folk stond al een hele tijd op mijn YouTube-playlist en komt nu eindelijk een keer binnen. Het is een stevige vrolijke danceplaat met acid- en doedelzakgeluiden. Het is een cover/bewerking van de gelijknamige hit van Perplexer uit 1994, maar ik vind deze versie op de een of andere manier net iets beter.

Third Eye Blind had met Semi Charmed Kind of Life en Graduate 2 heerlijke alternatieve rockplaten een paar jaar terug. Daarna is het een beetje 'net niet' steeds, maar nu weer eens 'net wel'. Never Let You Go zit uitstekend in elkaar, maar het mist net dat beetje extra om echt goed te scoren.

Zie nu trouwens dat Out of Control al 12 weken in de top 2 staat, die is hard op weg een van de succesvolste hits ooit uit mijn hitlijst te worden.

Op 25 is de hoogste nieuwe voor de Manic Street Preachers, met het klassiek socialistisch getitelde The masses against the classes. Je zou het een fel anthemachtig lied kunnen noemen, maar het valt mij vooral op dat het niet blijft hangen.

Anouk scoort in deze fase van haar carrière met elke single een forse top 40-hit, ook als het niet direct een vlotte radiovriendelijke single is, zoals nu met The dark. De song mist een duidelijk refrein, maar laat Anouk wel even rappend horen. De clip is wel weer waanzinnig, zeker voor Nederlandse begrippen.

Jamiroquai laat steeds meer hun soulfulle sound achter zich; op King for a day hoor je veel piano en violen; gelukkig blijft wel de soepele stem. De clip is toepasselijk in Louis XIV-stijl.

Bush maakt met Letting the cables sleep een rustige maar toch spannende ballad, erg sfeervol. Gavin Rossdale blijft de grote troef van de band en tilt de song naar een hoger niveau.

De Pet Shop Boys hebben heel wat lange titels in hun catalogus, maar dit zal toch een van de langste zijn. Dit keer is het een ingehouden sound, natuurlijk wel met de typische vocalen van Neil Tennant en genoeg elektronische geluidjes, maar zonder de bekende beats. In het instrumentale deel horen we zelfs een slidegitaar (als ik mij niet vergis).

Beetje chaotische week, weinig '2000' geluisterd. Maar om de nieuwe Air kan ik niet heen. Eigenlijk vind ik dit het enige werk van na Moon Safari dat dat niveau nog haalde. Schitterend nummer van de soundtrack van een van de iconische films van dat jaar (The Virgin Suicides). In Eels verloor ik langzaam mijn interesse. Daisies of the Galaxy was het laatste wat ik van ze kocht en grijsdraaide. Mr. E's Beautiful Blues blijft een leuke single, al vond ik de opvolger destijds nog een stuk beter.
Electrelane ken ik maar van 1 (later) album, maar dat is wel erg goed. Muziek in het kielzog van Neu!, Stereolab, Sonic Youth, etc. Deze debuutsingle is instrumentaal en klinkt zoals ie heet.

In 1981 sta ik bijna op het punt om een zeer lang afscheid aan te kondigen van Steely Dan. Hun return was in 2000 dus het mag lang lijken, we pakken hier de draad snel weer op. Puur toevallig, het is niet anders.

Van de band Stratovarius, biecht ik ook gelijk op, had ik nog nooit gehoord. Terwijl de Finse band een enorme groot oeuvre heeft opgebouwd. Begonnen al in 1989. De band doet mij voor wat betreft het theatrale deel een beetje aan Nightwish denken. Maar zeer onderhoudende muziek.

Creed is z'n oude zelf maar de meer opgeruimde, opbeurende muziek is deze week afkomstig van Marcy Playground en Eels.

Deze week 4 nieuwe. De hoogste is voor een Noorse band, Velvet Belly (lijkt te verwijzen naar een haaiensoort). De eerste albums waren nog vrij experimenteel, soundscapeachtig, maar met Lucia uit 1997 en een goede zangeres werd de muziek wat radiovriendelijker. Easy is vrij dromerige licht dansbare pop. Ik kan niet verklaren waarom dit in Nederland pas in 2000 een succes(je) werd, maar ik geloof ook niet dat ik me in de releasedatum vergist heb omdat hij toevallig een keertje op de radio gedraaid werd; gezien het succes in mijn top 40 werd hij toen wel vaker gedraaid.

Zo obscuur als Velvet Belly is, zo bekend is Abel, een band uit Breda die met debuutsingle Onderweg een grote top 40-hit scoorde (nummer 1). Het pianoloopje, de tekst, de voortgaande melancholische melodie, misschien ook de Brabantse tongval zorgden ervoor dat iedereen (van alternatief tot commercieel) voor de bijl ging, en ik ook. Later werd dit nummer onder andere door Anouk gecoverd in een Engelstalige versie, What have you done. Spijtig genoeg voor Abel droogde het succes hierna snel op, met nog 1 opvolg-hitje en wat tipnoteringen.

Ook de derde binnenkomer is een Nederlands product, van de band Handsome 3Some, met Drag 'n bass. De sound is alternative rock, met wat drum 'n bass-invloeden, wat met het terugkerende 'Its a drag' voor de curieuze titel gezorgd zal hebben. De band heeft maar een paar jaar bestaan.

De band Kraftwerk behoeft natuurlijk geen introductie, maar een frequente bezoeker van mijn top 40 was het toch ook niet (4x in bijna 50 jaar). Expo 2000. Het thema van de song is de Wereldtentoonstelling die in 2000 in Duitsland plaatsvond Hannover. Muzikaal is het een vertrouwd Kraftwerkgeluid, en ook de vocalen zijn weer vervormde stemmen met wat kreten die op de Expo van toepassing zijn.
