Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is voor Superfunk's Lucky Star. Ik kan me dit nummer eigenlijk niet echt herinneren van 'toen', maar gekgenoeg de single hoes wel. Stond denk ik in de cd-bakken van de studentenvereniging waar ik draaide. Wel een heel tof french touch nummer, blij dat ik hem alsnog goed heb ontdekt.

Send Me An Angel is een gothic/ebm-plaat uit de jaren '80, hier onder handen genomen door een naam die mij ook niets zegt verder (DJ Cosmo is een Amerikaan zie ik). Blijft eigenlijk wel dichtbij het origineel, maar gothic/ebm schuurt soms ook dicht langs eurohouse. Dat geldt trouwens ook voor Der Leiermann van de Covenant. Wel iets zwaardere gothic dreun dit, maar ook fijn. Doet me denken aan de studentenclub van weleer.

Echt duister wordt het bij de totale zonsverduistering van Einstürzende Neubauten, met een single van Silence is Sexy, een album dat ik nog niet van ze ken. Maar heb de band ook nog niet zo lang geleden pas echt (her)ontdekt.

Pure pop is er ook, van All Saints met een heerlijke productie van William Orbit. Hun beste nummer zondermeer. En ook Lenny Kravitz scoort met een single waarvan ik niet meer weet waar ik hem tegenkwam. Zie nu dat 'ie al dik een jaar oud is, dus die verdwijnt volgens week weer... Wel een nummer dat ik nu veel leuker vind dan toen. En sowieso wel een van zijn betere, maar ik ben absoluut geen Kravitz-fan verder.

Michael's Beatbox' Toeternitoe is een beetje een gimmick, afkomstig van een Belgisch kindertv-programma dacht ik. Maar stiekem is het wel een prima mix van schranz, electro, etc.

Muse staat al 5 weken bovenaan; verder een rustige week met 4 binnenkomers.

De hoogste nieuwe is een echte R n B classic van Montell Jordan met Get it on tonite. We kennen hem nog van de stamper This is how we do it, maar nu laat hij zich van zijn gladste kant horen, met een tekst die we nu eerder als fout zouden bestempelen (I got a girlfriend but you look good tonight). Een lekker liedje is het zeker, maar het wordt langzaamaan wel steeds zeldzamer dat zulke songs mijn top 40 halen.

De tweede binnenkomer is voor de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Janice Robinson, voorheen van de Eurodance band Livin' Joy, bekend van de hit Dreamer, waarnaar ze in de tekst van dit Nothing I would change een verwijzing maakt. De song is meer rock georiënteerd, en ze kijkt terug op haar leven so far, en dat ze niets anders gedaan zou hebben als ze het opnieuw zou moeten doen (geen opzienbarend statement). Het haalde onze tipparade, en verder zouden we niet veel meer van haar horen.

David Bowie vinden we deze jaren niet meer terug in de top 40, en bij mij zijn de scores ook niet meer zo goed als ooit. Maar Survive is wel erg sfeervol en nostalgisch, geen krampachtige poging om in de sound van vandaag mee te gaan maar een tijdloos nummer; als het vaker gedraaid was, had het het ook vast beter in mijn lijst gedaan.

Sting gaat ook al enkele decennia mee, maar op Desert rose bewandelt hij wel nieuwe paden. Hij schreef het samen met de Algerijnse componist Cheb Rabah, en met extra vocalen van Cheb Mami. De Noord-Afrikaanse invloeden doordrenken dit lied, waardoor het veel frisser en origineler klinkt dan zijn overige composities uit deze jaren. Het haalde kennelijk twee keer in een jaar tijd de Nederlandse tipparade, maar nooit de top 40. Bij mij wordt het een flinke hit, en op een heel kleine notering in 2003 na Stings laatste wapenfeit bij mij.

Ondanks dat het qua het hoge dansgehalte niet lijkt loer ik alle new entries wel na bij de mede users en daar spotte ik gelukkig de Smashing Pumpkins bij musician. Het Adore t/m early 00's gedeelte kon ik SH wel hebben (heb ze zelfs in de Brabanthallen gezien) en ik dacht even dat dit ook van Adore kwam, maar we zijn al een album verder. Schreeuwerig en veel minder electronica op Stand inside your love.Juul1998B weet dat ik stiekem de Pumpkins een warm hart toedraag.

Of het toeval is of niet, Tom Novy gebruikt dezelfde Delegation sample die voormalige nummer 1 Triple X-Feel the same ook gebruikte. Als Poeha nog meedeed had ik misschien daarvan ook backing voor Tom gehad. De Duitsers zijn doorgaans niet zo van de funky discohouse dus meneer Novy valt dan gelijk meer op. Met radiosteun had dit nummer in 2000 de weg naar de charts wel kunnen vinden, maar dat gebeurde dus niet.
Joey Negro is een alter ego van Dave Lee die een Ibiza anthem aflevert, al gespot door Martijn Jonkers vorige week.

nieuw:
- Volgens Spotify is Horizons al uit december 1999, maar ik had hem nog niet in het vizier. Mooie vondst, Martijn! Prima trancekraker van James Holden, maar nog niet zo baanbrekend als zijn materiaal van over een paar jaar.
- Met de baggy sound van Dark Star gaan we een kleine 10 jaar terug in de tijd. Had zo een Stone Roses nummer kunnen zijn...
- Het Belgische Lords of Acid draait al jaren mee, maar haalde denk ik nooit mijn lijst. Maar deze big beat kraker gaat er best in.
- Met Bomb The Bass' Canvas is wel iets grappigs aan de hand. Deze was op mijn 2025-tiplijst beland en wilde ik eigenlijk laten binnenkomen in mijn MuMe-afrekening, maar toen zag ik ineens dat 'ie al uit 2000 stamde. En dat terwijl het veel weg heeft van het GusGus-housewerk van de laatste jaren. Ik vond het wel indrukwekkend dat iemand ruim 30 jaar na zijn laatste hit ineens zo voor de dag kwam, maar er zit dus iets minder tijd tussen... nog steeds een fijne plaat natuurlijk.
- The Beta Band blijft een intrigerende band. Lekker psychedelisch met nu ook wat elektronica. Deze mag mooi de vorige single aflossen die deze week uit de lijst valt.
- Pink Martini is voor mij een nieuwe naam. Sympathique is jaren '40 jazz in een loungy jasje, muziek zoals je die ook terugvindt op verzamelaars als de destijds populaire Buddha-Bar-reeks. Destijds moest ik daar niets van hebben, maar nu heeft het toch wel mijn interesse.

Ik moest even zoeken naar de nieuwste single van Death Cab for Cutie, één van hun eersten, maar succes was blijkbaar nog ver te zoeken. Ik vond uiteindelijk een clip op youtube. Het is niet onaardig maar staat ver bij hun beste werk vandaan.

De Wannadies zijn al weer tien jaar verder en hebben een perfecte single afgeleverd. Voldoet aan alle eisen. Nog net even onder Millencolin (petje af), een zweedse rockband (verklaart gelijk de titel) die in ieder geval in het Engels zingen.
Dat kan (nog) niet worden gezegd van Dir en Grey. Ze maken prima singles, ik versta alleen geen woord Japans. Het zal een gebrek aan mijn opvoeding zijn geweest. Maar de song is weer prima.

Het Belgische Novastar staat ook niet voor de eerste keer genoteerd. Blijkbaar heeft de band meer in zijn mars.

Sinds het begin van de telling van mijn top 20/40 is dit nummer 1234 . Muse haalt zelfs nog een zesde week op 1.

De hoogste nieuwe had er al 2 weekjes in gestaan, maar kennelijk werd hij nu pas goed op de radio gedraaid en was het tijd voor een herwaardering voor Radio.

De tweede nieuwe (of de eerste, ligt eraan hoe je telt) is van de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter en pianist Fiona Apple. Met Fast as you can schreef ze een vlot en dansbaar nummer, met een wat gejaagd tempo, dat halverwege er even helemaal uit wordt gegooid, en dan weer terugkeert. Ondanks haar langdurige carrière blijft dit haar enige entry in mijn lijst.

Dat kunnen we niet zeggen van de eels: die hebben in totaal 15x (tot nu toe) in mijn top 40 gestaan. Mr. E's beautiful blues heeft wel een opgewekt ritme, maar zonder me erin te verdiepen, lijkt de tekst mij minder vrolijk, en ook wordt er weer heel veel in gevloekt.

Creed scoort zijn derde hit bij mij met What if? De sound is hier harder dan gewoonlijk, met een schreeuwerige zang en zware gitaren en drums. Het resultaat blijft wel wat minder goed hangen.

Op 37 vinden we een klassieker uit het R n B-genre, van Engelse makelij: Pure shores (al zegt Wiki dat dit geen RnB meer is, maar dreampop, voor wat het waard is). De song werd geschreven voor de film The beach (in de clip zitten ook scènes uit die film). De sound is open, muzikaal en rijk, de vocalen melodieus. Toch haalt de song maar net de top 10 (van de NL top 40); pas later volgt de klassiekerstatus.

Limp Bizkit gaat op N 2 gether now helemaal crossover naar de rap/hiphop, met niet alleen eigen rapteksten maar ook een flinke bijdrage van Method Man (van Wu Tang Clan), en ook een terugkerende sample van een klassieke gitaar uit Sonata II van Annie Challan. Hiermee haalt Limp Bizkit voor het eerst de NL top 40 (maar niet voor het laatste, zelfs afgelopen jaar wist de band nog de top 40 te halen).

Ik denk dat je in de war bent met Linkin Park

De nieuwe Elliott Smith spreekt voor zich. Schitterend nummer van de singersongwriter op het toppunt van zijn populariteit. Eigenlijk heb ik Figure 8 niet zoveel gedraaid i.t.t. de albums ervoor. De komende maanden maar eens goedmaken...

The Avalanches' Electricity kwam in gelimiteerde oplage alleen uit in thuisland Australië. Mooi voorproefje van Since I Left You, dat eind dit jaar uitkomt en misschien zelf mijn favoriete album uit dit jaar is.

Van Caesar was ik destijds behoorlijk fan. Ik associeer dit nummer/het bijbehorende album ook heel erg met de uitreiking van mijn propedeuse in het Leidse academiegebouw, ergens begin 2000 blijkbaar.

De nummers van Lemongrass en Emiliana Torrini zijn beide nieuw voor mij. Lemongrass is een Duitse downtempo/lounge producer, dus dan weet je ongeveer wat je kunt verwachten. Maar eigenlijk past ook het nummer van Torrini wel in die trend/sfeer.

Muse is tot nu goed begonnen, kwalitatief hoogstaand werk, ook nu weer een uitstekende Sunburn.

Nieuw plaatwerk ook van U2. Ook al is het dan een soundtrack die hoort bij de film A Million Dollar Hotel.
Nog afgezien van een opmerkelijke goede song, die later toch ook maar op de cd All that you can't leave Behind is gezet, is de tekst. Die is namelijk geschreven door de schrijver Salman Rushdie.

Ook Moby heeft een alleraardigste single uitgebracht. Ik zal toegeven dat hij geen vaste gast is in deze lijst. Maar er wordt toch altijd geoordeeld en dit keer is het kwartje, terecht, de juiste kant opgevallen.

JJ72 zal dit jaar ook hoog gewaardeerd worden. Alternatieve rockband uit Ierland met vocalen van Sarah Fox.
Bluetones is een meer bekendere band, met indie roots. Stammen uit 1993 en met een kleine pauze bestaat de band nog steeds.
