Mooie van Field Mice..maar al gespeeld anders zou ik m zo weer nemen
Maar past in Augustus wel beter ja

Dat lijkt mij toch een duidelijke verwijzing wanneer het is uitgebracht

Die van Field Mice kwam bij mij niet eens zó hoog, maar heb hem toch wel erg veel gedraaid dit jaar. Van de singles uit 1991 heb ik dit jaar alleen Unfinished Sympathy, Movin' On Up, Safe From Harm, Till Weet Meet Again en Oops nog vaker gedraaid.

Maar dit wordt zo wel een heel goede week met heerlijke nieuwe singles van Pulp en Pavement. En Pearl Jam's Alive heeft me nooit zoveel gedaan, maar wie weet haalt die het ook wel. En anders wel de volgende single.

Niks van Ten voor mij brrr..hooguit Even Flow als dat n single was tenminste maar kan dat Ten niet meer horen..

Wat mij betreft is het jammer dat Alive nu al in de lijsten komt. In NL wordt het pas in 1992 een hit, en dus ook dan pas in mijn top 40.
Wel kan ik melden dat het album Ten toch zeker drie nummer 1 hits in mijn lijst zal opleveren .

Vorige week een hoop dance nieuw binnen, deze week juist weer een hoop gitaren. Ik was al maanden aan het wachten op de release van Countdown, een Pulp-single die me dierbaar is. In 1997 kocht ik op vakantie in Luxemburg de gelijknamige verzamelaar, destijds na Different Class mijn tweede Pulp-cd. En het titelnummer was al snel een van mijn favoriete nummers. Ook in de extended version (8 minuten plus) niet te versmaden. Een geduchte concurrent voor Pale Saints voor de #1-positie van volgende week.

Verder diverse nummers die ook al bij collega's langs zijn gekomen: Pavement is een favoriet 90s bandje; Summer Babe is hun eerste bekende single. Dead Moon is heerlijke garagerock. Dit nummer had wel een paar weken nodig om te landen, maar het klinkt elke keer dat ik het hoor weer ietsje beter. You Belong In Rock N Roll is een degelijke single van Bowie's Tin Machine. Altijd fijn zijn stem te horen, maar de tijd zal moeten uitwijzen hoe goed dit nummer eigenlijk echt is. Alive is natuurlijk over bekend. Net als luigifort kan ik Ten niet meer zo goed aanhoren, maar bij herbeluistering viel me dit toch goed mee. B-kan Wash is trouwens ook niet verkeerd.

Nog niet genoemd door anderen volgens mij: Blake Babies, een collegeband uit Boston met o.a. Juliana Hatfield in de gelederen en ook nog een bijrol voor Evan Dando van de Lemonheads. Leuke cover van een jaren '70 hitje van The Grass Roots, lieve stem ook van de zangeres. Smashing Orange (ook uit de US) is wat steviger met een fijn fuzzbox-geluid en gaat wat shoegaze en neo-psychedelica.

Zeven binnenkomers maar liefst ; de hoogste is op 25 Tin Machine. You belong in rock 'n roll had duidelijk meer succes dan debuutsingle Under the god; het is een ingehouden rocksong, toch vooral een Bowie-product ondanks de groepsomgeving. Uiteindelijk ook de enige Tin Machine-single die onze tipparade wist te halen...

Op 27 ook bij mij Martika met de Prince-compositie Love... thy will be done. Dat klinkt heel behoorlijk.

Op 30 weet Lenny nog een maal een goede song in mijn top te krijgen, met een mooie mengeling van hemels en krachtig.

Op 32 Roch Voisine met een Frans-Engels nummer, Hélène (geen verband met de gelijknamige song van Julien Clerc), een persoonlijke gitaarballad, met echter te weinig herkenbaarheid om te scoren.

Op 34 The Shamen met een van hun vlotste en succesvolste singles.

Op 37 Richard Thompson met I feel so good. Toen ik dit in mijn schrift las, zei het me niets, maar toen ik het nummer afdraaide, klonk het meteen heel vertrouwd in de oren. Het is een heel vrolijk folky song die draait rond de punchline I feel so good I'm gonna break somebody's heart tonight.

Op 38 Level 42 met Guaranteed. Nog volop het vertrouwde geluid, maar de ideeën lijken wat opgedroogd; dit is het ene oor in en het andere oor uit.

Tipparade: week 34 van 1991.

1. Prince and The New Power Generation - Gett Off
Deze Prince-single waarin hij ook rapt veegt de vloer aan met vele hiphop- en dancenummers in de top-40 die tijd: krachtig, funky, afwisselend, erg swingend en prima productie.
Cijfer: 8,5

2. Dire Straits - Calling Elvis
Het gitaarwerk van Knopfler is niet minder dan weergaloos. Sfeervol en wat mysterieus klinkend nummer, leuk vind ik de opsomming van de titels van Presley-songs.
Cijfer: 9

14. Mannenkoor Karrespoor - Lekker Op De Trekker - 'n Boerinnen-Wervingslied
Erg simpel feestnummer dat muzikaal natuurlijk weinig voorstelt maar op een boerenfeestje kan het wel een keer.
Cijfer: 4,5

19. BZN - It Happened 25 Years Ago
BZN die een medley brengt van oude rock'n roll-nummers. Niet onaardig geprobeerd maar geef mij toch maar de echte rock'n roll-sterren.
Cijfer: 5

24. Juan Luis Guerra & 4.40 - Como Abeja Al Panal
Ligt in het verlengde van zijn vorige hit en dus minder verrassend al is het een aangenaam relaxt en gezellig zomernummer.
Cijfer: 7

25. Bonnie St Claire - Zeven Jaren
In dit genre niet onaardig door de zang maar tenslotte overheerst de meligheid wat typisch is voor dit soort schlagers.
Cijfer: 4,5

26. Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight? [Lachversie]
Zie week 51 van 1980.

27. Hanny - Peter, Ik Vertrouw Je Voor Geen Meter
Wederom een clichématige schlager met korte houdbaarheid en flauw refrein, dit heeft minder inhoud dan dat nummer van Bonnie St Claire.
Cijfer: 3

28. Karl Keaton - Love's Burn
Kende ik niet (meer) maar valt best mee: fijne en soepele soulstem, degelijke song hoewel ietsje glad geproduceerd.
Cijfer: 7,5

29. Shamen - Move Any Mountain
Dit vind ik wel een prima eigentijds dance-nummer: sfeervol, melodieus, vrij eigenzinnig en het swingt ook nog.
Cijfer: 8

30. R.E.M. - Near Wild Heaven
Opgewekt en erg aanstekelijk nummer met prachtige stemmen en samenzang en gepaste heldere gitaar- en pianobegeleiding, poprock op zijn best.
Cijfer: 9

Ik ben er nog een week (33) niet bij. Morgen weer aan het werk. Mogelijk dat de zomerblues dan verdwijnt.

Near Wild Heaven staat voor de tweede week op 1, en vergroot zijn voorsprong op nummer 2 behoorlijk. Het is ook de enige plaat die bij meer dan de helft van de deelnemers in de top-20 staat (bij 7 van de 8 zelfs). Het is echt het R.E.M.-jaar aan het worden. Losing My Reliogion stond 8 weken op 1, Shiny Happy People 6 weken, dus in totaal staat R.E.M. al 16 weken op 1 dit jaar.

Vier mooie nieuwen ook deze week. Voor Martika had ik destijds meer oog dan oor zal ik maar zeggen. Prince waarschijnlijk ook, want hij nam haar onder zijn hoede voor haar tweede album, Martika's Kitchen. Love...Thy Will Be Done klinkt ook erg Prince-(LoveSexy)-achtig, maar ik vind het best een mooi nummer, al is het geen Toy Soldiers, waar ze hier twee jaar geleden trouwens ook al de weeklijst mee haalde.

The Smashing Pumpkins maken dan weer hun debuut in de weeklijst met Siva. Opvallend dat Rhinoceros het niet gehaald heeft, dat vind ik toch een beter nummer. Maar deze band zullen we de komende jaren natuurlijk nog veel gaan tegenkomen.

Dat geldt zeker ook voor Pearl Jam. Oer-grunge-anthem Alive behaalt meteen de weeklijst, hoewel het nog een half jaar zou duren voor hij in Nederland zou doorbreken. Ik vond het toen best een aardig nummer, maar grunge zou nooit helemaal mijn stroming worden. Daarvoor was het me toch allemaal wat te eenvormig.

The Field Mice hebben een abonnement op de weeklijst, zo lijkt het. Ze stonden er met hun vorige vier singles ook al in. En terecht wat mij betreft, een erg onderschat bandje in die tijd. Het is nu wel voor de laatste keer dat ze het halen, want Missing the Moon is hun laatste kunstje. Maar de bands die uit ze voort zouden komen zijn ook zeker de moeite waard.
