week 19 van 1994 - zei ik vorige week nou echt dat ik een britpop top 3 had, niemand die me even terecht wijst... Madder Rose is helemaal niet brits. Ik zei het nog bij een gezamenlijke. Maar goed, de top 3 verandert niet qua samenstelling, wel qua volgorde want nu staat Echobelly netjes op 1. Nee, dat heeft niks met het bovenstaande te maken.
Verder 5 binnenkomers.
Als hoogste de officieel derde single van het album Last Splash van the Breeders. Saints is weer een echt Breeders nummer, mid-tempo en het schuurt en piept en kraakt... heerlijk. Op de cd-single overigens ook de demo van Cannonball, Grunggae getiteld die vorig jaar nog in een lijstje terecht kwam van iemand.
Lisa Loeb met de aftitelingsmuziek van de film Reality Bites; dat weet ik nu weer beter aangezien ik afgelopen week de film weer heb bekeken. De film is zeker wel de moeite waard voor wie de 90s bewust heeft meegemaakt. Enerzijds het verwende leven thuis anderzijds het bijna geen werk kunnen vinden na het school verlaten en je wil je toch eigenlijk afzetten tegen je kapatalistische ouders.
He dat is leuk, in de Elvis Costello week van MuMe komt de hoofdpersoon ook met een nieuw nummer de UK top 75 binnen. Dit nummer heeft bij mijn weten niet meegedaan maar onterecht als ik het zo hoor, echte Costello song, lekker uptempo en venijnig gezongen.
Mark E Smith staat nog met z'n bijdrage aan Inspiral Carpets in de lijst en nu is er ook een nieuwe van The Fall, de band die meer bandwisselingen heeft gehad dan de Sugababes. Nou bestonden ze ook wat lager maar toch knap. Het nieuwe nummer is lekker dwars zoals Mark E kan.
Pram kende ik van een verzamelaar, niet met dit nummer overigens. Alternatieve dance met op dit nummer veel triphop invloeden. Het nummer Chrysalis is de 'lead track' (want clip) van de EP Meshes.
Onderaan dan ook nog Corona voor een extra stukje eurodance.

En dan is het tijd voor de gezamenlijke met zoals inmiddels gebruikelijk 10 lijstjes.
Tja, was het vorige week zo bloedstollend spannend, dit keer is de spanning in el kgeval aan de top totaal weg. Oasis stelt orde op zaken en heeft al bijna meer dan het dubbele aantal punten van Blur.
Verder naar onder wel een paar gelijke spelen die op basis van positie van vorige week zijn beslist, maar ja, maakt het veel uit of je 7 of 8 staat, of 11 of 12?
Arme PSB... exact hetzelfde aantal punten als vorige week, kwamen ze daar toen triomfantelijk mee binnen op 18, nu is het net niet genoeg en dus zijn ze ook alweer weg.
In totaal 6 binnenkomers waarvan 1 re-entry.
Als hoogste een nummer uit 1989... Metallica verkocht in de jaren 80 meer t-shirts dan albums waardoor ze wel een bekende naam waren al kende lang niet iedereen de muziek. In 1989 verscheen het door de fans nogal lauw ontvangen And Justice for All, flink overgeprodcueerd. Toch groeide het nummer One wel langzaam uit tot een favoriet en werd zelfs de top 100 allertijden in gestemd. Samen met het feit dat Metallica met het Black Album hits ging scoren was dat reden genoeg voor de platenmaatschappij het nummer opnieuw als single uit te brengen en met succes, dit keer werd het een grote hit.
Pretenders zijn dan juist een band op hun (commerciele) retour, sinds 1980 waren ze in de Top 40 regelmatig te vinden, in de UK met nog wat meer succes. Met de ballad I'll Stand by You was het nog wel een keer raak.
Warren G en Nate Dogg met een nummer van de soundtrack van Above the Rim, een album vol hiphop. De single, een samenwerking tussen 2 rappers, werd een dikke top 10 hit.
Nirvana met een single van In Utero, een die schijnbaar is teruggetrokken door hun label maar toch wel verkrijgbaar is (of geweest, maar ook nu wel via de beursen en online shops).
Waltari, uit Finland met hun mix van rock, dance en jodel scoorde een onwaarschijnlijke hit. Dat het een eendagsvlieg zou worden wist iedereen meteen al. Toch heeft de band een enorme hoeveelheid albums gemaakt, de laatste in 2015. Zou iemand ze allemaal in de kast hebben staan?

Prima nieuwe single van Pearl Jam. Lost in America is een eerste track van The Last Temptation of Christ, het nog te verschijnen album van Alice Cooper.
Zou dit album eigenlijk niet eens een prachtig alternatief zijn voor The Passion op tv? Alice komt zelf de hoofdrol graag vertolken.

AngeloV Leuk om te zien hoe goed Carter het altijd doet bij jou. Ik noem ze wel eens de 'indie-pet shop boys' (kan zijn dat ik dat over heb genomen van een uitspraak toen) en jij bewijst wel dat die uitspraak helemaal niet zo gek is

week 20 van 1994 - ik verbaas me er over hoeveel muziek van toen helemaal niet op Spotify terug te vinden is. Voor m'n 2019 weeklijst heb ik een spotifylijst gemaakt, in een 1994 versie daarvan zouden veel gaten zitten. Gelukkig is er dan nog youtube
Zeven binnenkomers deze week en niet de minste.
Als hoogste Sleeper, eerder dit jaar (nou ja 94 dus) met hun debuut al een weekje op 1 gestaan. De band zelf postte een herinnering op facebook (he facebook in 1994?) dat de single afgelopen week uitgekomen was dus wie ben ik dan om dat niet te honoreren met een plaats in m'n lijst. Delicious is zoals de titel al aangeeft een heerlijk nummer, lekker uptempo.
Daar vlak onder, dat was wel even een sensatietje hoor, toen die uitkwam. Wat een nummer.Je hebt soms van die tijdloze platen die ongeacht wanneer ze uitkomen altijd indruk maken. Neem bv een Love Like Blood. Deze kan zo in een zelfde rijtje (al heeft deze bij mij de top 100 allertijden nog nooit gehaald)
Cranberries met hun 2e hit in de UK is een wat steviger nummer dan Linger, als je dat vergelijkt met het onlangs uitgekomen 2019 album dan zijn ze eigenlijk maar weinig veranderd.
The Family Cat is zoiets wat niet op spotfify staat. Ik kende de bandnaam al een poos en ooit op een platenbeurs gewoon een single van ze gekocht. Laat dat nou net dit nummer zijn De band komt uit de UK, muzikaal doet het wel wat aan amerikaanse noise/alt.rock bands denken zoals Sugar of Superchunk maar dan met een zang die meer van Evan Dando heeft. Overigens mag je ze ook met Ash vergelijken, toch wel brits en die zitten ook niet heel ver weg qua sound.
Die Monster Die is een amerikaanse band die wel onder de riot-grrls te vatten is, muzikaal is het wat minder extreem dan een Bikini Kill of Huggy Bear en passen ze ook prima bij bv Veruca Salt en Magnapop. Ook niet op spotify.
Ok dan gaan we nog even dansen onderin de lijst, ten eerste met Motiv8, ook niet op Spotify met een 90s eurohouse nummer. Geen rapper dit keer maar verder heeft het alle zelfde kenmerken; uptempo dance met (gast)zangeres.
Onderaan ook nog Westbam, nou ja dansen, meer hakken in dit geval.

Het is jammer voor de Crash Test Dummies dat ze hun grootste succes beleven als net One van Metallica is uitgebracht. Na 2 weken op moeten ze al plaatsmaken, maar wellicht kunnen ze de nummer 2 nog een tijdje vasthouden. Over de nummer 1 hoeven we ons de komende weken in ieder geval niet meer druk te maken.

Op 22 alweer zo'n jaren zestig klassieker die heruitgebracht werd. Ik zie nu dat I've got dreams to remember dit jaar niets deed in de hitlijsten, dus had ik hem beter ook niet in mijn eigen top 40 kunnen noteren, maar goed, gebeurd is gebeurd.

Op 28 alweer een single van Enigma, met de vertrouwde sound van wereldmuziek, dance en new age, en wat vage spirituele teksten. Deze was ik inmiddels toch wel vergeten, het blijft ook niet hangen.

Op 33 Stiltskin, een nieuwe naam, met Inside. In mijn herinnering was het TROS Paradeplaat (als dat toen nog bestond) en vond ik dat een heel aparte keuze, maar het werd een grote hit. Het begint met een pompeus koor, en gaat dan onlogisch over in een typisch jaren 90 rock song. De zanger moet natuurlijk wel genoemd worden, Ray Wilson, die later het laatste studioalbum van Genesis mocht inzingen.

Op 36 The Cranberries met Dreams, die in deze tijd single na single uitbrachten, maar ze werden helaas wel steeds inwisselbaarder, een prettige sound maar niet memorabel.

Op 37 Hunters & Collectors, een Australische band, met een single die ik totaal niet meer kende, Holy Grail, en het komt mij nu ook niet bekend voor. De tekst gaat over het mislukken van de Napoleons invasie van Rusland, maar het lied is in Australië een anthem geworden in het Australische football, en ook voor andere sporten gebruikt. De piano in deze rocksong is wel opvallend, verder klinkt het niet zo bijzonder. Nu ik erover nadenk, de piano doet denken aan die in Manic Monday van The Bangles.

Voor alle partijen had het beter geweest als Wilson vooral de zanger van Stiltskin was gebleven. Daar had deze band mee vooruit gekund, en wij ook, en dat had voor Genesis ook een ander einde opgeleverd.
