De opmerking ging over Thom Yorke, dus je spreekt dan over drie albums. 1x Radiohead, 1x Thom Yorke solo, 1x Atoms for Peace. Alledrie waren niet echt hoog in de jaarlijstjes te vinden (internationaal). Vandaar mijn opmerking dat "alles wat Yorke uitbraakt zogenaamd fantastisch is" ongefundeerd is.

De definitieve lijst van mijn favoriete albums uit 2016 na beluisteren van 453 releases (incl. EP's) die ik 7 of meer keren beluisterd heb. In de laatste week toch nog 2 verrassende hoge binnenkomers op 22 Mass Gothic en 57 Team Ghost, verder wat kleine verschuivingen.
Gerangschikt op basis van hoe vaak ik het album beluisterd heb en met tenminste 3,5* gewaardeerd is. Zodoende kan het dat goede albums uit de laatste maanden hier (nog) redelijk laag staan.

Dank je. Nou na een partij dunne brei in de toiletpot te hebben gedeponeerd gaat het wel goedkomen. Jij en uiteraard alle wel en niet MM-ers ook een gezond 2017 gewenst.
Ja het zou wel raar zijn als ik de albums van Radiohead en Marillion als rampzalig bestempel als ik ze niet even gehoord had. Had ik dat maar niet gedaan. Clutching at Straws was ooit mijn eerste CD back in '87. Dus ik had het nog kunnen weten van te voren ook. De beste muziek komt eenvoudigweg niet uit Engeland.

Tja. Zelf had ik Radiohead op 2 en Bowie op 1, maar gevoelsmatig vind ik het erg jammer dat Blackstar geen nummer 1 is geworden hier op MM. Gelukkig in veel andere jaarlijsten wel.

Het zijn zijn uithalen waarin vaak de essentie van de boodschap weerklinkt. De anticipatie en beleving van de kalverliefde, of uit frustratie en eenzaamheid weer solo. Ze geven weg aan of vloeien net uit zijn scherpe zanglijnen. Van een klassieke schoonheid, met bakken attitude. Frank Ocean heeft een eigen manier van zeggen, die niet meer klanken behoeft dan hij eigenhandig kan dirigeren en af en toe het geluid van een dikke knipoog toelaat.

James Blake opent zijn schetsboek. De aanzet als finaal werk, met delen van het blote doek nog zichtbaar, in een decor waar het rode doek nog het halve podium bedekt. The Colour in Anything is meer een tocht dan een album, met losse gedachten, schommelingen en echo’s die hun weg in elkaar vinden. Blake klonk in vervormde vorm nooit helderder.

Haar zwarte, weerbarstige krullen in vol ornaat op de hoes, maar waag het niet er aan te komen. “Don’t touch my hair” is het statement, de vibe, dat de hele plaat kleurt. Het ooit onderdrukte verbiedt ze tot haar eigen onafhankelijke, van het toen onwetende maakt ze hier het allesomvattende. Nog voor het initiële oogcontact, de lippen amper van elkaar los, word je gelijk de mond gesnoerd. “What’d you say to me?” klinkt het tegelijk weary en mad. Vanachter de zwarte, weerbarstige krullen spreekt een gebroken ziel klaar om haar plek weer op te eisen, misschien wel voor het eerst.
