Wat een hoeveelheid mooie albums zijn er in 1998 uitgekomen. Deze lijst is ook erg geslaagd. Mijn nummer 01 en 09 komen hoogstwaarschijnlijk ook nog langs! Voor dit jaar heb ik maar een top 40 ingeleverd, vanwege de grote hoeveelheid kwaliteit!

En Elliott begon de race op plek 3 en nam alras de runnerupplek in om niet meer los te laten.

Het succes van de vorige plaat van Elliott, Either / Or en de soundtrack-single van Good Will Hunting, Miss Misery brachten hem een aanbod van een nieuw major platenlabel, Dreamworks.
Rond deze tijd verzandde Elliott in een diepe depressie en sprak openlijk over de mogelijkheid zichzelf van het leven te benemen. Hij deed destijds tenminste één keer een poging hiertoe, apelazarus sprong hij van een klif in North Carolina en landde op een boom. Gespietst, maar de val was gebroken. Vragen over deze poging deed hij af met "Yeah, I jumped off a cliff, but let's talk about something else."

Christopher Cooper, manager van Cavity Search Records (waar Roman Candle op uitkwam), vertelde over deze periode: "I talked him out of thinking that he wanted to kill himself numerous times when he was in Portland. I kept telling him that he was a brilliant man, and that life was worth living, and that people loved him." Muzikant uit Portland Pete Krebs knikt: "In Portland we got the brunt of Elliott's initial depression... Lots of people have stories of their own experiences of staying up with Elliott 'til five in the morning, holding his hand, telling him not to kill himself."

Ondanks deze ellende bracht Elliott, die in zijn deplorabele staat toch kon werken, XO uit. Hij dronk veel, zat avond aan avond in de Luna Lounge, terwijl overdag XO gestalte kreeg. Geproduceerd door Rob Schnapf en Tom Rothrock.
Waar Elliott altijd 'solo' te horen was, de instrumenten zelf bespelend en met zijn bekende gedubbelde vocalen, werd het geluid op XO door hen aangevuld met instrumentaties van LA-muzikanten Joey Waronker en Jon Brion en werd, met o.a. een blazerssectie en string-arrangementen het geluid voller gemaakt.

Iets te weelderig, maar Elliott kan niet veel fout doen in deze tijd…

Mijn nummer 1 en mijn nummer 2 komt er aan

Nog zo'n opgewekt plaatje, dat bloedmooi is. Mijn nummer 2. Doet me eraan herinneren dat ik toch echt binnenkort een keer Heaven Adores You moet gaan zien. De dvd ligt al een tijdje klaar, maar neem aan dat je daar toch ook wel enigszins voor in de mood moet zijn.

Vanaf begin op grote afstand. Werd zeker de eerste helft van de week in vrijwel alle lijstjes genoemd, dan nam later iets af.

Album, of liever gezegd project dat als werktitel Damaged Goods krijgt (naar de song van Gang Of Four).

Op deze plaat van Massive Attack belandt de jazz van de eerste albums meer op de achtergrond en komen andere stromingen (ambient, rock) meer op de voorgrond. Het geluid is veel donkerder, met dreunende bassen en distorted gitaren. Tegen die dreigende achtergrond wordt het koele stemgeluid van Elisabeth Fraser, de fluisterzang van Daddy G of 3-D of de warmte van Horace Andy of Sarah Jay gelegd.

Dit geluid en het proces daartoe leidt tot sterke onvrede van Mushroom (Andy Vowles), een van de oprichters van de groep. Hij verlaat Massive Attack na de release.

Producer Neil Davidge achteraf, in interview: The production of Mezzanine was a stressful process, with tensions arising within the group. The album was meant to be released in December 1997, but was delayed by four months, with Del Naja spending most of the time in the studio "making tracks, tearing them apart, f***ing them up, panicking, then starting again."
Mezzanine was a pretty sketchy album in terms of the way we worked, because the band, as reported a lot at that time, were not getting on. So I'd be in the studio working with one of the members and someone else would come in, then the person I had been working with would leave and I'd have to change the track I was working on because they didn't want to work on that track, they wanted to work on something different. Sometimes I'd be working on perhaps four different tracks in one day, which was a pretty messy way to work.

Het hele album is beschikbaar vele maanden voor officiële release op de website van Massive Attack. Het was een van de eerste albums die op deze wijze werd verkocht.

Een nat bos in het donker met weerlichten in de verte. Plaat die ik bij vlagen nog veel draai en een soundtrack is bij intieme momenten…
