Tipparade: week 17 van 1985.

1. U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
Het meest gewaardeerde U2-nummer op MuMe en ik vind het ook één van hun beste nummers. Schitterende intro en opbouw met name het gitaarwerk, de karakteristieke wat mysterieuze sfeer en vooral veel passie waarbij Bono een groot stembereik blijkt te hebben.
Cijfer: 9,5

15. Frank Boeijen Groep - Kronenburg Park - Ga Die Wereld Uit
Dit vind ik nog wat beter, wellicht één van de mooiste Nederlandstalige nummers ooit. Meer dan prachtige intro, enorm pakkende melodie en tekst waarbij de toetsen voor de melancholieke sfeer zorgen.

22. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark
Zie week 21 van 1984.

25. Eurythmics - Would I Lie To You?
Een steviger rocknummer van Eurythmics met Kinks-achtige gitaar maar erg swingend waarbij de volle zang van Annie Lennox tot volle glorie komt. De baslijn en blazers maken het nummer compleet.
Cijfer: 9

26. Mary Jane Girls - In My House
Een ééndagsvlieg maar een erg aanstekelijk nummer mede door het ritme en funky gitaar en de synths passen hier goed bij.
Cijfer: 8

27. George Benson - Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for you
Het zal nooit mijn favoriete ballad worden wegens te zoet maar ik vind deze versie een stuk beter en soulvoller dan die van Glenn Medeiros. Waarom George Benson gezien zijn status in de tipparade bleef steken en Glenn Medeiros daarmee wel een grote hit kon scoren is mij een raadsel.

28. Change - Let's Go Together
Er zijn zoveel remixen van maar ik heb de singleversie genomen. Veel boeit het mij niet, het is wat zoutloos en het kabbelt lusteloos voorbij zonder bij te blijven.

29. Stephen Tintin Duffy - Kiss Me
Zwakke zanger met een nummer dat alleen die tijd een hit kon worden maar het refrein blijft wel hangen.
Cijfer: 4,5

30. Freddie Mercury - I Was Born To Love You
Freddie Mercury was vocaal natuurlijk van andere koek. Hoewel ik dat een niet erg bijzonder nummer vind met een zekere kitschgehalte waarbij de clip belangrijker lijkt te zijn.

De top 5 staat helemaal vast. En dat was de vorige week al zo! Ook 7 en 8 blijven staan, maar de Simple Minds komen eraan van 11 naar 6, dus die top 5 gaat er volgende week zeker ook aan.

Zes binnenkomers, met als hoogste de curieuze titel-artiest-combinatie Immaculate Fools van Immaculate Fools. Het is een wat droefgeestig klinkend nummer, een beetje vergelijkbaar met Wonderful life van Black.

Op 30 de opvolger van Love and pride, Won't you hold my hand now van King. Deze klinkt wat feller dan zijn voorganger, maar het mist helaas dat speciale en het werd ook geen hit.

Op 31 ook weer een droevig klinkend liedje, nu van The Lotus Eaters. Dankzij de stem goed te herkennen als de band van You don't need someone new, maar ook hier geldt: het heeft niet dat speciale.

Op de 33 de aparte cover van I feel love ( van Donna Summer) en Johnny remember me (van Johnny Leyton) door Bronski Beat (en Marc Almond). Aanvankelijk was ik hier wel erg sceptisch over, maar hoe vaker je het hoort, hoe aanstekelijker het wordt. Maar meer dan een voetnoot bij de originelen is het natuurlijk niet.

Op 35 een lekker stevige single van The Eurythmics, Would I lie to you? In de loop der jaren had de band steeds vaker minder geslaagde singles, maar hier klopt alles aan, felle zang, gitaar en scherpe tekst.

En op 37 een typisch jaren 80 lied, Imagination van Belouis Some. Moet het vooral van de productie hebben, de melodie blijft niet erg hangen.

U2 is aan het weglopen van de concurrentie en is het afwachten wie de komende week of weken U2 op de hielen gaat zitten?

A-Ha komt nieuw binnen op 14 met hun "wereldberoemde" clip Take On Me, The Art Of Noise met Moments In Love is de 2e nieuweling en waar Everything But The Girl opnieuw in de weeklijst verschijnt.

Simply Red en Marillion stijgen flink wat plaatsen door in hun 2e week en waar China Crisis behoorlijk naar beneden duikelt, maar de opvolger komt er al weer spoedig aan.

Een unicum, voor het eerst sinds ik hier mee doe komt er een nummer binnen wat er al eerder in heeft gestaan. Een re-entry dus. Het gaat om The Damned, ik luister de laatste tijd erg veel The Damned - Phantasmagoria (1985) en behalve dat heel het album erg goed is beviel me het Ska-achtige Grimly Fiendish me toch veel meer dan eerst.

Verder een klassieker eerste klas in de vorm van 19.

Hoe kom je daar toch aan?
In Duitsland de 3e single van het album in 1986, in Engeland de 2e. Je ziet dat daar ook het nummer een hoger volgnummer hebben dan Cannonball.

Cannonball was zo'n beetje overal de enige echte eerste single van het album Brother where you bound. En dat duurt nog een paar weken.

Op UMD staat deze op op 02 - 1985 en op Wiki staat deze ook gewoon als eerste single. Op UMD staan eigenlijk nooit promotie singles dus lijkt me het prima zo!

Het nummer is niet in de VS uitgebracht, alleen in Engeland als opvolger van Cannonball en in Duitsland (en voor de rest van Europa) als derde titel van het album.
In Engeland heeft Still in love ook volgnummer AM265, Cannonball heeft AM248. En ze tellen bij CBS, waar A&M records deel van uit maakt, niet terug.

De promotie van Brother where you Bound ging gepaard met het wereldwijd uitbrengen van Cannonball. Over niet al te lange tijd overigens. Dat was een gangbare en traditionele vorm van promotie. Er werd niet stilletjes een paar maanden eerder alvast een nummer van het album uitgebracht.

U2 staat voor de zesde week op 1, maar eeuwige rivaal Simple Minds snijdt door de top 10 als boter en bedreigt nu direct de tot dusverre ongenaakbare koploper.

Slechts vier binnenkomers deze week, en ook nog aan de lage kant. Sterker nog, niet een van het viertal zal mijn top 20 halen. Ook Kronenburg Park niet, binnen op 31. Het is een onvervalste Nederpopklassieker dei in Radio 2 Top 2000-kringen altijd hoge ogen gooit. Het is ook wel de typische Frank Boeyen-plaat geworden, met poëtische en soms moeilijk verstaanbare teksten, een drijvende melodie en niet in de laatste plaats gospelachtige achtergrondkoortjes van de dames van Mai Tai. Achteraf gezien had hij wel verder mogen komen dan nummer 23, maar ja, dat is wijsheid achteraf.

Op 34 ex-Duran Duran-lid Stephen ''Tintin'' Duffy met zijn bekendste single, Kiss me. Een uiterst 'niets-aan-hand'- liedje waar niemand een hekel aan zal hebben, maar ook bij niemand in zijn top 100 Aller Tijden zal staan. Hip geproduceerd, dat wel.

Op 38 state-of-the-art disco van Loose Ends. Het klinkt erg cool en relaksed. Ik neem aan dat het hun debuutsingle is, want titel (Hangin' on a string) en artiestnaam corresponderen enigszins.

Op 39, veel lager komen ze bij niet binnen, de zoveelste single van Howard Jones, die zich nu tot zijn moeder richt: Look mama, I love you, but you've got to let me live my life. Dit clichégegeven wordt op de bekende Howard Jones-manier verklankt, en het klinkt zoals we kunnen verwachten.

Tipparade: week 18 van 1985.

1. Modern Talking - You Can Win If You Want
Hun tweede single en die klinkt hetzelfde als hun vorige ... en de daaropvolgende singles zullen ook net hetzelfde klinken. Hoewel, dit nummer is nog best aardig maar nadien was ik hun sound snel beu.

20. Mick Jagger - Lucky In Love
Vrij matige single waarin Mick Jagger geforceerd hip lijkt te willen zijn mede met de eigentijdse productie. Neen, deze single maakt mij niet echt gelukkig.

22. Dead Or Alive - Lover Come Back To Me
Een band waarin ik nooit veel in heb gezien, dit is een plat en nietszeggend mechanisch nummer en het is ook een kopie van hun vorige hit You Spin Me Around. Kortom, wegwerpmateriaal.
Cijfer: 3

23. The Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town
Dit werd daarentegen geen hit maar is veel tijdlozer. Smaakvol, naar een climax groeiend en - wat de groepsnaam belooft - ook dromerig. Later gesampeld door Dario G (Sunchyme) maar ik kies uiteraard de oorspronkelijke versie.
Cijfer: 7,5

24. Silver Pozzoli - Around My Dream
Op zich niet onaardige maar wat gedateerde Italo-dance en het lijkt bovendien verdacht veel op Dance Hall Days van Wang Chung. Ook is de Engelse uitspraak nogal stuntelig (typisch voor deze stroming).
Cijfer: 4,5

25. Fun-Fun - Living In Japan
Dit zit in zowat dezelfde hoek en klinkt nu nog mechanischer en gedateerd met fletse en erg vlakke zang. Opmerkelijk dat de Italo-dance van weleer de tand des tijds niet heeft doorstaan in tegenstelling tot die van de zwarte Amerikaanse artiesten (Michael Jackson, Prince).
Cijfer: 3

26. Jan Boezeroen - Toen Ik Eindelijk Alles Had
Jan Boezeroen die een beetje Koos Alberts achterna gaat. Zwakke, vrijwel valse zang en dit kun je nu ook niet meer draaien.
Cijfer: 2,5

27. Bryan Ferry - Slave To Love
Zowat in het verlengde van Roxy Music waarbij de gepolijste maar avontuurlijke arrangementen in dienst van de sfeer staan en zijn croonerstem is ook een lust voor het oor.
Cijfer: 8,5

28. Depeche Mode - Shake The Disease
Smaakvolle en gevoelige synthipop van een band die volwassen is geworden, Depeche Mode is beslist één van de meest toonaangevende synthipopbands in de 80's.
Cijfer: 8,5

29. Phyllis Nelson - Move Closer
Nadien gecoverd door Marilyn Martin en die versie vind ik iets beter. Het nummer van Phyllis Nelson is te overgeproduceerd wat de zwoele sfeer breekt.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. The Smiths - The Headmaster Ritual
Wellicht de belangrijkste gitaarband van die tijd en je hoort waarom,. Gevoelige zang gekoppeld met aansprekende tekst, desolate sfeer en rockend maar melodieus gitaarwerk.
