Cloudbusting blijft fier aan kop, maar Russians van Sting stoomt in zijn tweede week al door naar 2, een knappe prestatie. Hopelijk voor Kate Bush is haar voorsprong zo groot dat die niet in één week is ingelopen.
Op 20 spat Paul McCartney binnen met Spies like us. Op internet lees ik dat velen dit een van zijn zwakste nummers vinden. Nu is het zeker niet een topnummer, maar zwak ik is het ook niet, gewoon een vermakelijk liedje, met een vermakelijke videoclip.
Op 27 overtreft het Schotse Simply Red hun debuutsingle Money's too tight to mention ruim. Holding back the years is de perfecte nostalgische ballad voor in de herfst. Mick Hucknall heeft een geweldige strot, en dat laat hij hier ongeremd horen. Het is ook meteen de band op zijn hoogtepunt (al komen er nog meer fijne plaatjes van hen).
Op 33 komt het laatste hitwapenfeit van The Three Degrees binnen, niet zo bekend als Dirty old man of The runner, maar toch een sterk liedje, vooral het refrein heeft een meeslepende melodie. Eigenlijk nogal onderschat.
Als laagste (nota bene) komt Talk Talk binnen met een van hun bekendste songs, Life's what you make it. De dwingende pianopartij karakteriseert de song. De clip laat veel natuurbeelden zien van kleine dieren in close-up, wat een vervreemdend effect heeft. Ook deze band is hier op hun best.

Tipparade: week 48 van 1985.
1. Pete Townshend - Face The Face
Krachtige en hoekige rocker van Who-lid met veel blazers al wordt het peil van zijn legendarische band niet gehaald. Blijft niettemin wel overeind.
Cijfer: 7
15. Sandra - In The Heat Of The Night
Typisch 80's-product met veel dichtsmerende synths en is daardoor te tijdsgebonden. De zang vind ik ook niet bijster sterk al blijft het refrein wel hangen.
Cijfer: 5,5
25. Simply Red - Holding Back The Years
Licht jazzy popsong met karakteristieke soulvolle en expressieve zang, nog niet zo glad als hun latere werk en dus goed te doen.
Cijfer: 7,5
26. Starship - We Built This City
Zowat de jaren '80 op zijn lelijkst wat betreft de productie met die foeilelijke syndrums en nepblazers, dit heeft weinig met rock'n roll te maken. Toegegeven dat het refrein nog enigszins catchy is maar ik heb nooit begrepen waarom dat toch wel vrij banale nummer een evergreen is geworden.

27. Frank & Mirella - Sneeuw In Augustus
Een schlager en ook in een jaren '80-productie. Dit zullen wij maar ook vergeten en wordt - in tegenstelling tot het vorige nummer - niet meer gedraaid.

28. Danny De Munk - Met Kerstmis Hoor Je Blij Te Zijn
Te overheersende synths die de kerstsfeer breken in het ook al weinig interessante nummer. Ik zou zelfs met kerstmis niet blij mee zijn.

29. Al Jarreau with Shakatak - Day By Day
Licht jazzy nummer maar vrij vervelend, beiden hadden hun beste tijd achter de rug en ook hier doet de productie het nummer geen goed.

30. André Hazes - Morgen Ben Ik Thuis
De coupletten vind ik nog aardig maar het melige en stroperige refrein doet het nummer de das om.
André Hazes is nooit mijn ding geweest en zal het nooit worden.

Marillion komt alweer met hun 3e single van het zeer succesvolle album Misplaced Childhood de weeklijst binnen en zien we "good old" Queen ook weer eens een plaatsje veroveren al is het wel een bescheiden binnenkomst.
Voor de rest niet al te schokkende dingen of het moet de vrije val van R.E.M. met Wendell Gee zijn.

Het aantal nieuwe binnenkomers zou geen grote schoonmaak veronderstellen. Maar de grote verschuivingen laten toch wel zien dat we op weg zijn naar de wintermaanden.
En daar wil ik overigens David Sylvian met zijn minimale klanken met plezier onder laten vallen. Geldt ook voor de nieuwe nummers van Jon Anderson en Snowy White. Waarbij de eerste overigens beduidend betere melodieën heeft geschreven.
David Sylvian liet zijn populaire debuutalbum Brilliant album opvolgen door "Alchemy: an index of possibilities ..." in 1985 en liet er vervolgens alleen een musicassette van verschijnen..... Dat was toen al allang geen favoriete geluidsdrager meer en het succes was dan ook ver te zoeken, ondanks een prima cast aan muzikanten. Hoe kwam hij op het idee.
Enfin, het leidde al snel tot Gone to Earth (1986).

Het aantal nieuwe binnenkomers zou geen grote schoonmaak veronderstellen. Maar de grote verschuivingen laten toch wel zien dat we op weg zijn naar de wintermaanden.
En daar wil ik overigens David Sylvian met zijn minimale klanken met plezier onder laten vallen. Geldt ook voor de nieuwe nummers van Jon Anderson en Snowy White. Waarbij de eerste overigens beduidend betere melodieën heeft geschreven.
David Sylvian liet zijn populaire debuutalbum Brilliant album opvolgen door "Alchemy: an index of possibilities ..." in 1985 en liet er vervolgens alleen een musicassette van verschijnen..... Dat was toen al allang geen favoriete geluidsdrager meer en het succes was dan ook ver te zoeken, ondanks een prima cast aan muzikanten. Hoe kwam hij op het idee.
Enfin, het leidde al snel tot Gone to Earth (1986).

Hoewel Russians vorige week van 10 naar 2 steeg, weet het de eerste plaats (nog) niet te bereiken.
Op 8 een erg hoge klapper The whole of the moon stormt binnen, terwijl Don't bang the drum nog altijd op 3 weet stand te houden. Het is goed mogelijk dat ik toen al het album This is the sea in huis had, en dus track The whole of the moon al kende, wat een extreem hoge binnenkomst zou verklaren. Maar tegelijk zou hij ook op eerste gehoor al zo kunnen hebben overdonderen dat 8 een passende entry was. Waar Don't bang the drum gedreven tot op het bot klonk, en geen hitsucces werd, heeft The whole of the moon een aansprekende tekst met optimistische muziek; dit zou dan ook de grootste hit van The Waterboys worden. Erg fraai zijn de analogieën in de tekst, waarbij de 'ik'-persoon steeds iets klaarspeelt, maar de 'jij'-persoon dit ruimschoots overtroeft, steeds culminerend in 'I saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon'. Dit overbieden werkt naar een mooie finale waarin zelfs vuurwerk wordt afgeschoten, waarna rustig naar het einde toe afgebouwd kan worden (wellicht met hulp van een loopje uit Bowie's Fame). Zelden gingen hitgevoeligheid en kwaliteit zo goed samen.
Op 27 scoort Pete Townshend een onverwachte hit met Face the face, een song drijvend op een straf volgehouden drumritme, en een tekst waarbij het werkwoord en het lijdend voorwerp steeds hetzelfde zijn. Best geinig, maar niet echt van eeuwigheidswaarde.
Op 28 het debuut van Mr. Mister, een Amerikaanse band die één album lang de aandacht trok, om te beginnen met een sfeervolle rock ballad die het in toppen Aller Tijden altijd goed doet (deed?). Ook de clip, met fraai gebruik van lichtval, draagt bij aan de 'klassieke' waarde van de song.
Op 31 een stevig swingend instrumentaaltje van Jan Hammer, de begintune van de zeer succesvolle TV-serie Miami Vice; als je van mijn leeftijd bent en je hoort dit muziekje, zie je vanzelf roze flamingo's dansen. Maar ook zonder beeld blijft het een lekkere song.
Op 34 alweer een Amerikaans product, Glen Frey van de Eagles met You belong to the city. Dit kan ik beter waarderen dan het vrolijke The heat is on. Een stemmige ballad waar weinig op aan te merken is.
Op 36 de zanger die ook zingt op mijn favoriete song en album aller tijden, Jon Anderson. Hier haalt hij dat dat niveau duidelijk niet, maar zijn stem is uit duizenden herkenbaar en de melodie passend bij het onderwerp (Jon is een echte wereldverbeteraar). De tekst heeft geen verwijzing naar Kerstmis, de muziek duidelijk wel; het is dus wel een kerstsingle.

Bronski Beat met een andere zanger dan Jimmy Somerville en dan klinkt het als een doordeweeks synthipopnummertje dat na een tijd verveelt door het herhalen van datzelfde akkoord.
Cijfer: 4,5
20. Silver Pozzoli - Step By Step
Dit klinkt ook banaal en doordeweeks, er zit niets in wat het nummer memorabel kan maken met zwakke tekst en uitspraak.

22. Jan Hammer - Miami Vice Theme
Natuurlijk bekend door de gelijknamige TV-serie en voor sommigen wellicht jeugdsentiment. Dit nummer kan ik ook niet los zien van die serie maar het mag er nu nog zijn.

Heel veel singles komen er in deze periode niet meer uit. Toch vrij veel nieuwe binnenkomers. Ik heb een vrij aardige kerstsingle kunnen vinden en een zeer fraaie binnenkomer van Stan Ridgway. Begin 1986 komt zijn eerste album uit (met de grote hit Camouflage), dit is de eerste single van dat album die dezelfde titel draagt.
Verder vind ik het jammer dat Midge Ure niet echt opgepakt wordt, voor mij zo'n beetje zijn sterkste single en komt het heel dicht in de buurt van het mid 80's geluid van Ultravox

Ik denk dat iedereen dat zich wel eens afvraagt waarom een bepaalde single maar mondjesmaat wordt opgepakt, zelf vind ik If I Was meer geslaagd en als een bepaalde single niet in mijn lijst staat wil niet automatisch zeggen dat ik het nummer niks an vind, maar wil ik ook singles een kans geven die niet zoveel worden genoemd in de andere lijsten + dat ik mijn lijst ook voor een groot gedeelte samenstelt hoe mijn muzieksmaak er vroeger uit zag en volgens luigifort is dat trouwens geen smaak
We zitten nu in de tijd dat we alles kunnen terughalen, kijken en beluisteren en vroeger was je toch voor het grootste gedeelte afhankelijk van wat je op de radio hoorde en van hoort zegt het voort....
De lijst van ranboy geeft overigens het beste weer hoe 1985 er in die tijd echt uit zag qua hits en wat er op dat moment populair was.
