Daar is dan de laatste single afkomstig van Toto's beste album Isolation. Blijft genieten, maakt niet uit wanneer dit beluisterd dient te worden.

Verder een drietal overbekende nummers, waarbij die van Kate Bush pas vrij laat binnenkomt. Dat heeft puur te maken met dat er de laatste twee maanden teveel sterke tracks zijn uitgebracht en dan wil ik nog wel eens de voorkeur geven aan onbekendere tracks. Zodat jullie die in ieder geval ook een keer beluisterd hebben, toch?

Als laatste een nummer van de op 24 november overleden Colonel Abrams. Bij dit nummer heb ik altijd weer het idee dat het producers team van onze eigenste Richenel hier wat (rond 0:55) van "geleend" heeft voor het nummer Dance Around the World (rond 01:09)

Een mooie instrumentale hit van Clapton, later ook prachtig (en dreigend) live neergezet. Het is bijna net zo mooi als de nieuwe single van The Cure. Ook natuurlijk sombertjes maar de ene keer wat mooier dan het andere.

Iron Maiden live, met een klassieker van de band. Live singles doen het lang niet altijd goed, misschien dat Run to the hills een uitzondering kan zijn.

In de donkere dagen voor Kerst weet Sting met Russians de eerste plaats te veroveren op Cloudbusting. The whole of the moon is de voordehandliggende bedreiging van deze positie.

Vijf lage binnenkomers, maar niet de minste. Op 32 Bronski Beat, nu zonder Jimmy Somerville maar met nieuwe zanger John Foster. Resultaat is veel minder 'uniek', een vlot simpel synthdiscoliedje dat zowaar nog de weg naar de hitparade wist te vinden (maar hierna was de koek wel op).

Op 33 een combinatie van Clarence Clemens, de saxofonist van Bruce Springsteens E Street Band, en Jackson Browne, de bekende singer-songwriter uit de seventies. Youre a friend of mine is een opvallend aanstekelijk (commercieel) liedje waar het plezier vanaf spat. Voor Jackson Browne overigens zijn enige top 40 hit.

Op 34 rap van Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew. The show herbergt de bekende kenmerken van samples, scratchen. human beatbox en featurings (Slick Rick); het geheel begint gezellig rommelig maar eindigt nog wat vager; er ontbreekt een herkenbaar refrein. Toch wel geinig om eens terug te horen.

Op 36 een geweldige track van Spear of Destiny, een Britse new wave band, afkomstig uit Theatre of Hate en geleid door zanger Kirk Brandon. Mickey is een indrukwekkend, episch verhaal over een jongen die soldaat wordt, en we weten hoe het daar over het algemeen mee afloopt. Dankzij de Verrukkelijke 15 in NL redelijk veel gedraaid, en wel een soort klassieker geworden (dacht ik).

Over klassiekers gesproken, op 37 komt bescheiden West End girls binnen van de Pet Shop Boys, voor mij hun debuut. Knap om met zo'n goed uitgewerkt product te debuteren. Het paste goed in de synthpopstroming van deze tijd, maar tegelijk was het een erg eigen geluid, dankzij de praatzang van Neil Tennant. Deze band zou het nog ver schoppen.

Tipparade: week 50 van 1985.

1. Gino Vannelli - Hurts To Be In Love
Deze man was toen al jaren actief maar scoorde hiermee pas zijn eerste hit, een degelijke maar overgeproduceerde ballad. Luister toch eens naar zijn vroegere meer jazzy werk.
Cijfer: 6,5

22. Mr. Mister - Broken Wings
Gestroomlijnde, vrij pompeuze pop dat naar AOR neigt. Zeker geen slechte single mede door de sterke zang maar niet meteen het soort poprock dat mijn voorkeur wegdraagt.
Cijfer: 6,5

27. Brilliant - It's A Man's Man's Man's World
Deze overbodige James Brown-cover op een slap reggae-ritme getoonzet met vreselijke productie zullen wij maar vergeten, beluister beter opnieuw het origineel.
Cijfer: 3

28. Berdien Stenberg - Fire Dance
Haar dwarsfluit mag gehoord worden maar de productie vind ik er totaal niet bij passen, het geheel neigt mij teveel naar kitsch.
Cijfer: 4,5

29. Dee Dee - It's My Lucky Day!
Een wegwerphit dat nu gedateerd klinkt en de zang is ook niet best. Wel vrolijk en zomers maar dat is ook het enige pluspunt.

30. De Deurzakkers - Kom Op, We Zetten Alles Op Z'n Kop!
Tot slot een vergankelijk carnavalsdeuntje dat veel te vroeg is uitgebracht en deze wederom zwakke week van 1985 zit erop.

Echo & The Bunnymen keren terug op de nummer 1 positie en dat is een primeur in deze lijst, want nog niet eerder lukte een artiest dat om terug te keren nadat de nummer 1 positie verlaten was, maar de Pet Shop Boys en Sting zitten inmiddels wel op het vinkentouw om het stokje misschien volgende week alweer over te nemen?

Slechts 2 nieuwkomers deze week en die bevinden zich in de staart van de lijst en dat zijn Simply Red en New Order en verder zien we Talk Talk en The Dream Academy goede zaken doen in de lijst.

Ik vind de Deurzakkers eigenlijk wel een "begrip" in Nederland al ruim 40 jaar still going strong.
Zeker niet vervelend om naar te luisteren al heb ik ook weer niet alle cd's van dit duo in bezit

Hoogste nieuwe op 22, nu ook bij mij binnen: Dee C. Lee met het geweldige See the day. Deze Britse soulzangeres werd bekend als achtergrondzangeres bij The Style Council. See the day werd door haarzelf geschreven en was haar eerste en enige solohit.

Op 29 nog een single van het succesvolle Born in the USA-album, My hometown. Nu is is Bruce niet de rocker, maar de bedachtzame singer-songwriter. Deze single scoort wat minder, maar nog altijd behoorlijk.

Op 30 breekt Gino Vannelli onverwachts door naar de NL hitparade met Hurts to be in love, een zoete ballad die kennelijk meer overtuigingskracht heeft dan eerdere klassiekers als People gotta move. Het succes is hem gegund, maar deze song heeft geen lange houdbaarheid.

En op 37 Revolution van The Cult, opvolger van het geweldige She sells sanctuary. Revolution is wat minder opzienbarend, maar heeft genoeg kwaliteit van zichzelf om opnieuw te scoren.

Tipparade: week 51 van 1985.

1. Dolly Dots - Unique
Dolly Dots gaan meer de rocktoer op met een nummer dat uiteindelijk te mager is waarbij de synths iets te overheersend zijn. De blazers zijn wel een fijne toevoeging.

15. Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew - The Show
Hoewel dit niet dadelijk mijn ding is - ik verkies melodieuze muziek met boeiende tekst of met meezinggehalte - vind ik dat in zijn genre origineel en goed gebracht en ook wel grappig.
Cijfer: 7

20. Bruce Springsteen - My Hometown
Het rustigste - en wat mij betreft - ook het minste nummer uit Born in the U.S.A.. Relatief want Bruce is een klasbak op velerlei gebied en dit is een weliswaar eenvoudige maar sfeervolle en warme song dat in deze tijd van het jaar past.

25. Princess - After The Love Has Gone
Een kopie van haar vorige hit Say I'm Your No. 1, dus niets nieuws onder zon en de productie is ook geen pluspunt.
Cijfer: 4,5

26. Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls
Ik heb wel een zwak voor Pet Shop Boys. Topmuziek is misschien teveel gezegd maar hier vind ik de productie perfect bij de unieke ijle stem van Neil Tennant passen en de wat mystieke, donkere sfeer in hun hits spreekt mij ook aan.

27. Willeke Alberti - Mijn Hoofd Weer Op Je Schouder
Weliswaar overgeproduceerd en melodisch standaard maar vooral tekstueel één van haar betere hits.

28. David Grant & Jaki Graham - Mated
De soul in die periode is meestal te glad en vaak ook wat zoet zoals dit nummer een voorbeeld van is. Geef mij maar de rauwere, échte soul, dit klinkt mij te plastic.

29. Alisha - Baby Talk
Een flauwe Madonna-kloon met een schaamteloze kopie van Into the Groove. Nu kent niemand haar nog, zo vergaat het met epigonen ...

30. Glenn Frey - You Belong To The City
Ondanks de leuke sax een vrij (cliché)matige solosingle van Glenn Frey die beslist beter kan gezien zijn verleden, dit kan niet tippen aan enig Eagleshit in de jaren '70.

Madonna lost zichzelf af op de # 1 positie, waardoor de Eurythmics & Aretha wederom niet op numero uno belanden.
Verder een tweetal nieuwelingen afkomstig van de soundtrack van de film Jewel of the Nile, waar ook m'n huidige #4 Billy Ocean van afkomstig is. Mark Shreeve komt met een heel fijn italo disco nummer en Precious Wilson (voorheen de zangeres van Eruption) komt met een prettig in het gehoor liggende powerballad. Voor mij de twee beste tracks van de soundtrack.

Vervolgens een van de beste tracks van de boys van a-ha, alsmede wederom een soundtrack nummer, maar in dit geval James Brown van Rocky IV , waarvan ook Survivor (m'n huidige #7 afkomstig is).
En uiteindelijk komt toch nog Feargal Sharkey op de proppen, ook al was dit nummer al even uit. Z'n volgende hit, You Little Thief, sprak me meer aan. Maar die komt volgende jaar nog aan de beurt.

Al met al een reeks sterke nieuwelingen in een normaal gezien niet al te beste tijd voor binnenkomers.

De Pet Shop Boys zijn de nieuwe nummer 1 deze week wat al min of meer in de lijn der verwachting lag en dat vindt vigil vast niet erg

Slechts twee nieuwelingen in de lijst en komt The Cure met A Night Like This binnenknallen op nummer 4 en is de Duitse Sandra de andere nieuwe met de opvolger van Maria Magdalena en die heet In The Heat Of The Night.

Wat The Cure betreft lijkt het hier op een promo single te gaan??
Maar misschien kunnen johan of luigifort hier het fijne van vertellen??

Ik krijg trouwens bij het invullen van de links bij de nieuwkomers niet het volgende vakje te zien waar je de tekst in kan vullen hoe het nummer heet dus voor deze ene keer maar op deze manier.

Deze week verschijnt overigens mijn laatste reguliere lijst van 1985 en daarmee hou ik gelijke tred met de Top 40 waar trouwens op 21 december de laatste lijst verschijnt van dit jaar en die keren terug op 4 januari 1986.

De laatste week van het jaar (tussen kerst en oud en nieuw dus) ga ik me bezig met de eindejaarslijsten en daar heb ik me handen meer dan vol aan
