Mijn vijfhonderdste weeklijst (top 20/top 40), dat is dus bijna 10 jaar. Daarvoor maakte ik een top 15 en daarvoor een top 10, maar die kenden hun eigen telling.
Zes binnenkomers, met op 21 de hoogste, de nieuwe single van Simple Minds, Sanctify yourself. Zowel tekst als muziek gaan richting de gospel, en hoewel ze steeds verder af komen te staan van de new wave waar de band mee begon, blijft het muzikaal nog goed overeind staan. Commercieel gezien staan ze op de toppen van hun kunnen.
Op 24 Here's Johnny met het heerlijke Idlewild. De jaren 40/50 showorkest-sfeer swingt de pan uit maar wordt nergens oubollig (risico dat veel retro-platen wel lopen); gek eigenlijk dat dit geen dikke hit is geworden (in NL).
Op 31 het destijds supermoderne geluid van italodiscoband Moses, We just. Tekstueel is het wat eentonig, maar het plezier waarmee synths en stemvervormingen worden toegepast, spat er vanaf.
Op 32 een degelijke single van Talking Heads, And she was. Zo creatief als in de beginjaren is het niet meer, maar dit kan nog aardig mee.
Op 37 een half vergeten Nederlands rockbandje, Blue Murder, met het aanstekelijke Talk talk talk. Het Nederlands accent klinkt achteraf gezien wel erg duidelijk door, maar een leuk liedje is het wel.
En op 38 een geheel (?) vergeten Nederlandse disco/soulband The Smithereens (dus niet de Amerikaanse band) met hun voornaamste wapenfeit (You is) A guarantee for love. Het is professioneel gemaakt, internationaal klinkende productie, maar het springt er niet uit.

Tipparade: week 3 van 1986.
1. Mai Tai - Female Intuition
Productioneel te tijdsgebonden maar een degelijke song, één van hun betere waarbij het stemmenwerk duidelijk is verbeterd.
Cijfer: 6,5
17. Anya - Moscow Nights
Leuke single, de Russische sfeer is er volop, nadien niets meer van haar gehoord (one hit wonder). Opmerkelijk dat ze in deze clip vrij schaars is gekleed bij deze koude.
Cijfer: 7
23. Total Contrast - Hit And Run
Hit en run ... dat is zeker van toepassing op deze band. Eén hit scoren en dat niets meer. Overigens een vrij doorsnee funky dancenummer met matige zang.

24. Nico Haak - Alles mag man, van de Bhagwan / Nico Haak - Winter
Bhagwan was een Indische sekteleider met veel volgelingen destijds. Winter kregen wij volop in 1986, met name februari was erg koud (al viel er weinig sneeuw). Beide singles ... mwah ...
Cijfer: beiden 5.
25. James Brown - Living in America
De comebacksingle van James Brown en swingend als vanouds met funky ritme en vette blazers. Overstijgt ruimschoots de gemiddelde dancehit die tijd.

26. Tiroler Babysitter song - De Alpenzusjes
Een Nederlandstalige cover van Buzz Clifford - Baby Sittin' Boogie (1961). Niet slecht maar zeker niet opzienbarend.
Cijfer: 5
27. Snowy White - For You
Deze band ken ik meer van Bird Of Paradise (week 5 van 1984). Dit is echter stuk minder, banaal refrein en overgeproduceerd.

28. Tommies - Let's Take You Back (To The Good Old Days)
Klinkt Brits maar het is een Nederlands product. Een melige medley van bekende deuntjes.

29. Isley Jasper Isley - Caravan Of Love
Aardige soul van Isley Brothers, zeker vocaal maar te glad, verbleekt bij de a capella versie van Housemartins later dit jaar.

30. Aretha Franklin - Who's Zoomin Who
De Aretha Franklin van de jaren '60 vind ik beter - meer soul en niet zo glad - al is dit een meer dan behoorlijke en swingende song.

Dit meen je niet? Een 7? Vond het toen best een aardige single, maar vorige week weer eens teruggehoord. Gewoon slecht ingezongen. En dan krijgen Mai Tai en Isley Jasper Isley respectievelijk slechts een 6,5 en 6.17. Anya - Moscow Nights

Ja dat is het meest logisch. Zelf zou ik dan wel voor de originele schrijfwijze gaan The Blood/Six Different Ways.
In ieder geval heb ik net door deze discussie het hele album opgezet zodat ik kan kiezen welke eventueel bij mij de strijd gaat winnen, ik gok het spooky Kyoto Song of anders Push ow nee dat kan niet
