Tipparade: week 24 van 1986.

1. Wham! - The Edge of Heaven
Hun laatste hit, wat steviger en minder vrolijk dan hun vorige hits. Maar vocaal en ritmisch is het wederom sterk.
Cijfer: 7,5

15. Prince and The Revolution - Mountains
Geen clip op You-Tube maar gelukkig wel op CD. Heeft een vrij spannende opbouw met licht jazzy toets. Een nummer dat gezien zijn status niet zo'n grote hit werd maar per luisterbeurt meer waardeert.
Cijfer: 8

23. Queen - Friends Will Be Friends
Wat te gewoontjes voor hun doen maar de vocalen van Freddie Mercury en de gitaar van Bryan May vergoeden toch veel.
Cijfer: 6

26. Sheila E. - Holly Rock
Meer rap dan rock, duidelijk te horen dat dit een productie van Prince maar verder een matig nummer, alsof hij de mindere nummers niet zelf wil opnemen maar aan iemand anders gaat slijten.
Cijfer: 4,5

27. Diana Ross - Experience
Duidelijk de hand van Bee Gees en ook hun achtergrondzang te horen, misschien hierdoor één van de betere nummers van Ross in de jaren '80 al werd het geen hit.
Cijfer: 7

28. The Communards - Disenchanted
De volgende band van Jimmy Somerville waarbij de kille synthesizers heel goed passen bij zijn ijzige en zeer herkenbare stem. Klinkt erg eighties maar ven het juiste hout gesneden.
Cijfer: 8

29. Solomon Burke - A Change Is Gonna Come
Soullegende Solomon Burke covert een klassieker van die andere soullegende Sam Cooke. Verdienstelijk maar het kan niet tippen aan het onovertroffen origineel dat duidelijk krachtiger is. De cover van Solomon Burke is te langdradig en ook gladder.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. Stephanie - Ouragan / Irresistible
Die drums klinken nu vreselijk en de synths bij wijlen ook. Het refrein is wel aanstekelijk maar zij heeft een erg dunne stem en dat mengen van Frans en Engels ... neen!

We noteren 4 nieuwkomers waarvan er 3 al eerder in de lijst stonden, Icehouse met No Promises dateert uit 1985 en is nu te bewonderen in de lijst van ranboy en sheep67.

Kate Bush met The Big Sky is derhalve de enige echte nieuweling deze week.

Opvallend dat de nieuwkomers van vorige week het zo matig doen in hun 2e week, al verwacht ik van Bowie wel herstel.

De liefde voor nieuw werk gaat wel eens ten koste van vermeend oud werk. Of een oude band. Zou iemand een stuiver geven voor Manfred Mann's Earth Band? Nee, en in 1986 ook al niet. En dat is jammer, de band bestond toen net 15 jaar en bracht alleraardigste muziek.

Prima albums en zoals hier een cover van The Jam. Going Underground was een Engelse nummer 1 voor de band van Paul Weller maar Mann was niet bang er een herhaling van gelijke kwaliteit tegenover te stellen. Behalve de kleine maar trouwe Mann schare is het nummer verder onopgemerkt gebleven in kleine kring.

Lijst nummer 522, dat klinkt niet erg bijzonder, maar ik had destijds berekend dat ik mijn top 20 nu precies 10 jaar wekelijks maakte (en heden dus precies 41 jaar).
David Bowie weet A-ha in ieder geval nog deze week voor te blijven, maar voor volgende week ziet het er somber uit. En wie goed oplet, ziet dat Sly Fox nu pas, in zijn achtste week, progressie begint te maken en de top 20 binnenkomt.

Op 27 een cover van het bekende Norman Greenbaum-lied Spirit in the sky. Veel voegt deze band, die wel meer covers op zijn naam heeft staan, niet aan het origineel toe, maar de sfeer blijft wel goed behouden.

Op 32 nog een cover, maar deze vind ik veel sympathieker. Sandie Shaw doet een albumtrack van Lloyd Cole & the Commotions, een onverwachte combinatie want Sandie Shaw staat bekend als een grote Britse zangeres van lieflijke sixties songs, maar hier klinkt ze een stuk feller en zelfbewuster.

Op 33 een van de beste liedjes van Van Halen, zowel gitaarriffs, zang als compositie zitten goed in elkaar. Opmerkelijk is dat het nu geen succes in NL wordt, maar in 1987 wel.

Op 34 Bucks Fizz, een band die na hun overwinning op ESF in 1981 nog een behoorlijke carrière op poten wist te zetten waar nog wat beste goeie songs bij zaten. En dit is een waardig afscheid (althans, laatste succes), want het is vet geproduceerd, met veel Afrikaanse ritmes en samenzang.

Op 38 een solohit van Topper Headon (ex-drummer van The Clash), die met Jimmy Helms op zang (Gonna make you an offer..., Londonbeat) een soulfulle track aflevert met funky sax en uiteraard swingende drums. Het haalde zowaar nog net de NL top 40.

1. Madonna - Papa Don't Preach
Een volwassener geworden Madonna, zowel vocaal als tekstueel en het levert haar beste single tot nu toe op.
Cijfer: 8

17. Eurythmics - When Tomorrow Comes
Behalve Sexcrime heeft Eurythmics enkel sterke singles in de top-40 gehad, dit rockt maar is tevens soulvol met vaart en aanstekelijk refrein.
Cijfer: 8

22. Modern Talking - Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. For Love)

Misschien goed bedoeld maar nu klef en gedateerd met kazige synths en fout reggae-ritme en deze formule (iedereen een zin laten inzingen) was bovendien allang afgezaagd.

Deze flauwe en ontzettende oubolligheid laat ik ook liever snel aan mij voorbij gaan. Next!

Wederom wegwerpmateriaal met onbenullige melodie en tekst, matige zang en gedateerde blikkerige productie.

28. Alisha - All Night Passion
Ook dit kan de prullenbak in wegens dezelfde reden als vorig nummer, zelfs nog ietsje erger.

29. Talk Talk - Give It Up
Talk Talk weet wel op smaakvolle wijze gebruik te maken van synths en hier staat de emotie vooraan. Misschien minder hitgevoelig dan voorgaand werk maar tijdloze kwaliteit.

30. Ramones - Something To Believe In
Duidelijk gladgestreken met toevoeging van synths om het hitpubliek te bereiken en dat past niet bij hun sound. Geen slecht nummer maar minder dan hun beginperiode.

Het Goede Doel met Alles Geprobeerd neemt het stokje alweer over als het gaat om de nummer 1 positie en is misschien (?) de nieuwe verrassende nummer 1 deze week.

The Smiths zakken naar 3 en A-Ha zit Het Goede Doel behoorlijk op de hielen met een verschil van slechts 1 punt.

Een magere oogst als het gaat om de nieuwkomers, in principe slechts 1, want Level 42 keert na 1 week afwezigheid alweer terug in de lijst met Lessons In Love, je kan tenslotte niet genoeg lessen krijgen

Michael McDonald met het aanstekelijke Sweet Freedom is de enige echte nieuweling op 13.

Na een "moeilijke" 2e week voor Bowie gaat het in de 3e week weer crescendo met Underground.

Leuk hoe 1986 gaat Martial.

Het enige interessante nummer van zijn "laatste" album van Rod Stewart is Every beat of my Heart. Op miraculeuze wijze weet Stewart door zorgvuldig gekozen enkele hits, uitvoerig in de picture te blijven. De waarheid inzake de zijn albums in de jaren '80 is minder rooskleurig. Maar gelukkig is daar dus nog Every beat of my Heart.

Ook Stevie Wonder, ik kan mij herinneren hem destijds eigenlijk afgeschreven te hebben na I just called to say I love you, blijkt nog alleraardigste muziek te kunnen maken.

eeeehh musician of Joe Jackson is enorm van uiterlijk veranderd en het staat ook nog eens verkeerd op het hoesje of je hebt zelf een foutje gemaakt
