We kunnen weer een nieuwe nummer 1 noteren en die is vanaf deze week in handen van het Noorse A-Ha met Hunting High And Low en waar de Top 3 aan elkaar gewaagd blijft, al komt Matia Bazar zich er nu ook mee bemoeien met de zomerhit Ti Sento.

Drie nieuwelingen die allemaal "bescheiden" binnenkomen en daarvan is Furniture met Brilliant MInd de hoogste op 17.

The Call komt met de opvolger van I Still Believe en die heet Everywhere I Go, maar vind ik toch wel iets minder als eerst genoemde en Ray Davies sluit de rij met Quiet Life die voorlopig alleen in de lijst van musician te vinden is.

We zien The Chameleons nog de Top 10 binnendenderen en is het voor de rest aan de "rustige" kant

De oudjes doen het nog goed, is mijn wat verbaasde conclusie na een nieuwe week in 1986. Alternatieve jongelingen waren óf (nog) niet mijn cup of tea óf brachten muziek die ik niet goed genoeg vind/vond óf "oudjes" hadden nog een dermate aanbod, dat ze moeiteloos een Top 30 konden vullen.

Aan de andere kant, hoe lang waren deze artiesten in 1986 nu nog bezig, om ze al onder de categorie oudjes te kunnen laten vallen.

Wie sowieso een goed jaar had, was Chris Thompson (1948 dus toen 38). Allereerst had de zanger al een nieuw album uit met Manfred Mann waarmee je hem hoort op Going Underground. Ten tweede was er het solo album The High Cost of living, waarvan nu de single Love and Loneliness. Geweldige zanger, dat leidt uiteraard geen twijfel, en prima muziek.

De aanvullende Oosterse klanken op de nieuwe single van Bryan Ferry (een nummer van de film The Fly) zijn eveneens intrigerend. Maar om de een of andere reden wilde het publiek er helaas niet aan.

Wel apart dat Simply Red met Come To My Aid "ineens" in de lijsten van ranboy en musician te vinden is voor een single die in augustus 1985 uitgebracht is

Ik had nog geen tijd om het na te kijken, maar ik had al zo'n idee dat ik hem vorig jaar al had meegenomen.

Tja zo kunnen goede singles, buiten The Smiths om, nooit eens een hoge gezamenlijke score behalen.

Heb hem vorig jaar niet gehad, dus een mooie tijd voor een herkansing.

By the way, ik moet sowieso toch blind kunnen varen op mijn collega's in dit topic?

In een Engelse pub gistermiddag en avond werd Wimbledon gekeken (won er een of andere Engelse dame?), grote glazen ale en geconstateerd dat er sprake was van een "echte" engelse zomer: het regende pijpenstelen.
Dus inderdaad, niets nieuws onder de zon (sowieso al afwezig...)

Het was toen midzomer en ik was drie weken op vakantie. Het toppenschrift ging mee en voor ik wegging, had ik extra veel tips genoteerd. Gevolg is wel dat er geen verrassend hoge binnenkomers zijn, maar eerder wat tweederangsliedjes.

Dat oordeel mag toch niet gelden voor de hoogste nieuwe, Furniture op 31. Brillliant mind is een een erg fijn liedje, typisch eighties maar toch ook heel apart, met een refrein dat uit slechts één regel bestaat, steevast gevolgd door een kenmerkend rifje; de zanger heeft een mooie diepe stem. Helaas heb ik van Furniture verder niets meer vernomen.

Op 32 opnieuw een Madonna-single; ze werd elke single wat inventiever en breder, het goedkope disco-image van Holiday was ze al aardig kwijtgeraakt. Papa don't preach deed ook nog wat stof opwaaien omdat het over zwangerschap voor het huwelijk gaat, maar feitelijk maakt de hoofdpersoon juist een brave keuze. Dankzij een klassiek intro en uittro weet de zangeres een steeds breder publiek te interesseren.

Op 33 Falco, die na het grote succes van Jeanny een vervolghitje scoort met Vienna calling. Het klinkt echter erg standaard, het heeft niets verrassends.

Op 34 een leuk springerig discohitje van Nu Shooz, met fijne stemvervormingen en speelse synths.

Op 35 probeert ook Janet Jackson haar imago in een wat serieuzere hoek te duwen door zich als Nasty te profileren (maar als je goed luistert, zet ze zich juist tegen 'nasty' types af). Vooral sterk door de stevige beat.

En op 37 een wat kleinere hit van Queen, met een lofzang op de vriendschap. Maar ook dit lied is behoorlijk voorspelbaar.

Tipparade: week 28 van 1986.

1. Matia Bazar - Ti Sento
Wellicht één van de beste Italohits door de volle en gepassioneerde zang in combinatie met de rake toetsen, het nummer lijkt ook naar een climax te groeien.
Cijfer: 8,5

16. UB40 - Sing Our Own Song
Van UB40 is dat ook één van hun beste hits waarin ze eindelijk weer geëngageerd uit de hoek komen. Zeer aanstekelijk ritme en toetsen bovendien.
Cijfer: 8,5

20. El DeBarge - Who's Johnny
Een typisch eightieshit dat er nog steeds mag zijn al was het door het sterke refrein dat in je hoofd blijft hangen.
Cijfer: 6,5

23. Aha - Hunting High and Low
Gestroomlijnde europop met melancholieke uitstraling en gevoel voor drama, net niet te bombastisch. De zang van Morten Harket is wederom een sterke troef.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. Miquel Brown - Close To Perfection
De zang is wat vlak maar globaal is dit een aanvaardbare popsong met fijne, sfeervolle arrangementen.
Cijfer: 6

26. Secret Sounds - Promises
Een vergeten Nederlandse band, door enkelen veel tof toegezwaaid. Zelf vind ik het nummer qua productie vrij gedateerd met lelijke drums en de song zelf springt er ook niet echt uit.
Cijfer: 5

27. Peter Koelewijn en De Rockets - Parlez-Vous Français?
Ook Peter Koelewijn ontkwam niet aan die syndrums. Verder amusant en meezingbaar maar hoogstaand is anders.
Cijfer: 6

28. Danny de Munk - Ratsmodee
Vind ik beter dan Ik Ben Zo Verdomd Alleen al werd het geen grote hit. Danny de Munk brengt het nummer op geloofwaardige wijze en zijn zang is ook verbeterd.
Cijfer: 6,5

29. Janet Jackson - Nasty
Een dancenummer met opzwepende beats, strak geproduceerd. Geef mij maar de hits in haar beginperiode ipv haar latere R&B-songs.
Cijfer: 7,5

30. Amazulu - Too Good To Be Forgotten
Een leuk en vrolijk zomers reggae-achtig nummer, dat is inderdaad too good tot be forgotten.
Cijfer: 7,5

Ik had altijd mijn reserves tegen de single Press van Paul McCartney, hoewel ik zijn album Press to Play als één van de weinigen op deze aardkloot altijd prima kan hebben.

Maar zie, met mijn koptelefoontje op en nog weer eens alles tegen elkaar gezet, is het toch eigenlijk een alleraardigst McCartney nummer. De instrumentatie en productie zijn wat aangepast aan de moderne tijd. McCartney slaat zich er echter prima doorheen en heeft, ondanks de geringe gladheid, een vrij experimentele song te pakken voor zijn doen.

James blijft zich met elke nieuwe song elke keer weer opnieuw te bewijzen. Knap hoor.

Had ik ook voor volgende week klaar staan, samen met nog een klapper.

Ik heb alleen maar klappers staan in mijn lijst
