En soms krijgen we de geboorte mee van een album dat later als (behoorlijk) legendarisch te boek zal gaan staan. Paul Simon komt met Graceland en daarvan alvast You can call me Al.

Ik heb het album destijds gekocht en het heeft alle kenmerken van keurig, politiek correct, juiste muzikanten, goede songs, sterk geproduceerd etc,
En toch vind ik er relatief weinig aan, vooral het "wereldgedeelte" als onderdeel van het album wil ik graag skippen. Dan hou je relatief weinig over maar dat is dan wel goed, zoals o.a. You can call me Al.

Alweer 6 weken op 1, dat is een knappe prestatie. Maar het is ook de laatste week.

Op 14 stormt Bruce Hornsby & the Range binnen, de kennismaker met deze band, en meteen een klapper van een hit, niet alleen bij mij maar ook in de NL top 40. Het is een ouderwets degelijke piano ballad met lichte rockinvloeden, en tekstueel een aanklacht tegen maatschappelijke ongelijkheid. Het lijkt alsof de zanger zich bij de situatie neerlegt (that's just the way it is), maar verderop in de lyrics gelooft hij dat toch niet. De song was voor Felix Meurders, die zich niet meer herkende in de eighties-muziek, voldoende reden om toch nog geloof in de popmuziek te houden.

Op 26 een soulfulle ballad van Patti Labelle, die hiervoor een grote top 10 hit had gescoord met Michael MacDonald (On my own). In haar eentje kan ze voldoende volume produceren. Ook hier weer een geëngageerde tekst met als strekking: als we ons allemaal als één grote familie zouden gedragen, zou er geen honger en oorlog zijn. Daar is geen speld tussen te krijgen (als het tenminste een voorbeeldige familie betreft).

Op 33 de eerste hit van Art of Noise, opgericht onder andere door Trevor Horne. Paranoimia (overigens een onzinwoord) ging vergezeld van een videoclip met Max Headroom, een geanimeerde figuur die ook de lyrics 'insprak'. Dit, samen met de aanstekelijke elektronische muziek, sprak breed aan en het werd een behoorlijke hit.

Op 34 discozangeres Miquel Brown met een prima niets aan de hand nummer, en op 35 een prima niets aan de hand ballad van Marilyn Martin. Hoogstens opvallend dat deze twee producties mijn top 40 wisten te houden (waarschijnlijk nog komkommertijd).

Tipparade: week 31 van 1986.

1. Marilyn Martin - Move Closer
Romantische en zwoele lovesong, goed voor de late avonduurtjes wanneer dit soort nummers beter tot hun recht komen.
Cijfer: 6

16. Chris de Burgh - Lady In Red
Deze ballad ligt mij veel minder wegens te slijmerig. Jammer dat Chris de Burgh net met dat nummer geassocieerd wordt, de rest van zijn oeuvre is veel beter.
Cijfer: 3,5

21. SOS Band - Borrowed Love
Dit is het ook niet, te vlak en te glad en ik hoor daar te veel in van Yarbrough And Peoples - Don't Stop The Music (week 6 van 1981).
Cijfer: 4

25. Pasadena Dream Band - Zandvoort
Ken ik niet (meer), komt mij clichématig over vooral wat de tekst betreft. Productie is ook een kind van die tijd.
Cijfer: 4,5

26. Rod Stewart - Every Beat Of My Heart
Lijkt zowat een jaren '80-update van zijn grote hit Sailing in 1975 maar gladder en pompeuzer. De zang tilt het nummer een beetje de hoogte in.
Cijfer: 6,5

27. Golden Earring - Why Do I
Minder nummer van Golden Earring, het tempo is wat loom en de steriele drums zijn ook een minpunt. Wel sterk refrein.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. The Beach Boys - Rock N Roll to the Rescue
Een totaal vergeten nummer van Beach Boys, het staat op geen enkel album of compilatie. Begrijpelijk want vrij banaal - zeker vergeleken met hun jaren '60-hits - en ook overgeproduceerd (die syndrums ... bah!).
Cijfer: 4,5

29. Chaka Khan - Love Of A Lifetime
Alleen haar zang is een pluspunt, de song zelf en ook hier de productie zijn onder de maat. Staat gelukkig ook niet op mijn compilatie van haar.
Cijfer: 4

30. Nancy Boyd & Darry Campanilla with The Cappello's - The shoop shoop song
Werd een grotere hit voor Cher, origineel is het van Betty Everett. Zwakke zang, dan deed Cher het veel beter.
Cijfer: 3,5

Dan heb je een minder compilatie album want Love of a Lifetime behoort zeker op een best of van haar.

Ik probeer mijn lijst vanvond nog klaar te hebben, maar... zwembad schoonmaken, schilderen, Weuro 2017, allemaal zaken die voor gaan

Matia Bazar houdt nog net stand op de nummer 1 positie, want R.E.M. vliegt werkelijk door de lijst heen met hun Fall On Me en het moet wel erg raar lopen wil dat niet de nieuwe nummer 1 zijn volgende week.

We noteren 4 nieuwelingen en waar Daryl Hall met Dreamtime de hoogste binnenkomer is op 12, al lijkt niet iedereen overtuigt van deze toch wel behoorlijk sterke single.

The Smiths zijn altijd wel een zekerheidje in de weeklijst dus geen verrassing dat Panic er alweer in te vinden is.

The Jesus And Mary Chain met- Some Candy Talking is dan weer zo'n nummer hoe meer je hem hoort ........ en is afkomstig van de gelijknamige E.P.

Schal de trompetten, steek de vlag uit. Is het niet voor de dames van het Nederlands Voetbalelftal, dan toch in ieder geval voor Prince. Niet alleen omdat het één van de betere nummers is van het Parade album, één van mijn meest favoriete albums van zijne koninklijke badness, maar vooral ook omdat er eindelijk weer werk van hem staat op youtube.

Voor zolang dat dan weer duurt. En niets te laat, Girls & Boys staat er net drie dagen op. De grandeur van de extra dimensie van bewegende beelden en muziek is natuurlijk de ultieme ondersteuning voor een goede song.

In je negende week nog op 1 komen, dat is behoorlijk zeldzaam, maar Matia Bazar lukt het. Erg lang zal de band er niet van kunnen genieten, want Bruce Hornsby komt met reuzenstappen dichterbij. En Sly Fox is nu echt aan de weg terug begonnen, in de 15e week!

Opnieuw komt de hoogste nieuwe op 14 binnen; de gelukkig is Cock Robin met hun derde single. In de top 40 deed When your heart is weak bijna niets, maar het doet niet onder voor de twee voorgangers. De zanger zingt nog gepassioneerder dan voorheen, de wanhoop klinkt er doorheen.

Nog een binnenkomer bij de eerste 20: Come on home klinkt monumentaal, met blazers en violen, en is een wel topzware ballad die niet iedereen zal trekken. Maar Tracey Thorn's stem houdt het dragelijk.

Op 31 de eendagsvlieg The Lover Speaks ( de bandnaam komt ook in de tekst van liedje voor) met No more I love you's. Menigeen kent dit beter van de cover van Annie Lennox (1995) die er wat meer succes mee had. Maar het origineel klinkt toch overtuigender, en op de zangstem na is er niet veel verschil.

Op 33 een swingend protest tegen de hebzucht, met een felgekleurde clip. Helaas worden zelfs de coupletten herhaald en heeft het lied geen lange adem.

Op 35 de bekende Vietnamsong van Stan Ridgway (voorheen Wall of Voodoo) over een soldaat in nood die hulp krijgt van een bovennatuurlijke medesoldaat, die achteraf al omgekomen blijkt te zijn. Muzikaal stelt het niet veel voor, maar de tekst blijft boeiend.

En op 38 de blanke soul van Michael MacDonald met Sweet freedom, zijn grootste hit in NL en een perfecte popsong, maar toch grijpt het mij niet echt aan.

20. Europe - The Final Countdown
Weliswaar wat foute rock maar nog best genietbaar door de zang en erg aanstekelijke melodie. Al vond ik het destijds beter dan nu (de tand des tijds heeft toch een beetje aan geknaagd).
Cijfer: 7,5

21. Patti LaBelle - Oh, People
Een nummer dat gladjes voortkabbelt, wel prima soulzang en sterke melodie waardoor dit nummer een ruime voldoende krijgt.
Cijfer: 6,5

22. Cock Robin - When Your Heart Is Weak
Werd een minder grote hit dan de twee voorgangers maar vind ik niet minder goed, integendeel. Pakkend nummer en erg emotioneel gezongen met veel passie.
Cijfer: 8,5

24. Five Star - Find The Time
Een nummer dat enkel in die tijd populair kon zijn. De videoclip en productie lijken belangrijker dan de song.
Cijfer: 4,5

25. Katrina And The Waves - Sun Street
Ik ken betere nummers van Katrina And The Waves, dit is een tikkeltje banaal, met name het refrein. Vrolijk is het natuurlijk wel en vocaal is het ook in orde.
Cijfer: 6,5

26. The Star Sisters - Are You Ready For My Love
Ritmisch doet mij dat denken aan Billy Jean van Michael Jackson. Verder een nummer dat je snel vergeten bent met ook hier een banaal refrein en productioneel te tijdsgebonden.
Cijfer: 3,5

27. Falco - The Sound of Music
Met veel kitsch en bombast maar behoorlijk gebracht met vurige zang/raps en behoorlijk aanstekelijke melodie.
Cijfer: 6

28. Georgie Davis - Break Her Stride
Heden te dage gedateerd door de productie en de zang en uitspraak zijn ook niet best. Ik zie niet in dat dit nu nog wordt gedraaid.
Cijfer: 3

29. Prince - Girls & Boys
De Prince-hits hebben wel een eeuwigheidswaarde. Lekker ritme, prima productie en het zit vrij inventief in elkaar.
Cijfer: 8

30. Carmel - Sally
Aangenaam jazzy nummer, vlotte melodie en ritme en goede zang, ook dit nummer blijft overeind.
Cijfer: 8

Yep...YouTube stroomt weer eens vol met de videoclips van Prince.
