De verrassing of toch niet? zit um in de 2e plaats die wordt ingenomen door Daryl Hall met Dreamtime die dus als een speer gaat in zijn 2e week.
Dreamtime is en blijft een sterke single.

Wat allang geen verrassing meer is dat de singles van The Smiths altijd de Top 10 invliegen en dat is met Panic niet anders zoals u ziet.

Aardig wat nieuwelingen deze week, 5 stuks totaal en waar Steve Winwood terugkeert in de lijst.

Berlin scoort in Europa en ver daar buiten een grote hit met Take My Breath Away dat afkomstig is uit de film Top Gun en is in onze lijst de hoogste nieuwkomer deze week op de voet gevolgd door Crowded House met het fijne World Where You Live.

Robert Palmer en The The maken het rijtje nieuwkomers compleet deze week.
Heartland mag dan wel geen Uncertain Smile zijn, maar deze single is toch erg de moeite waard al zeg ik het zelf.

Wel opvallend dat de magische grens van 100 punten pas 1 keer gehaald zijn deze jaargang wat bijvoorbeeld inhoud dat de lijstjes behoorlijk divers en afwijkend zijn van elkaar.

En dan, alsof het zo heeft moeten zijn, I'll be over you van Toto. Net afgelopen zaterdag nog weer eens een exemplaar van het album Fahrenheit op een tweedehands markt gekocht. Gaaf nog uiteraard maar wel de originele versie met de rode inlyay tray. Het is dan altijd grappig dat er juist een nummer van zo'n album wordt uitgebracht.

Ti sento houdt het nog een week op 1 vol, meer zal het toch niet zijn, met The way it is dreigend op 2. En Come on home haalt in zijn tweede week de hoogste nieuwe van vorige week in, een knappe prestatie.

Weer een ontzettend hoge binnenkomer, ditmaal The final countdown van Europe, met zijn onmiskenbare herkenbare muzikale Leitmotiv. Dat dit toch hardrock/heavy metal is, vergeet je al snel, zo catchy is het. Waarom sommigen dit als een guilty pleasure beschouwen is mij een raadsel, het zit ijzersterk in elkaar en heeft zelfs iets melancholisch.

Op 20 nog een hoge nieuwe: It Bites zou in de loop der jaren uitgroeien tot een gevestigde naam in de progrock-wereld, maar hier is het nog een jonge honden-bandje met een erg aanstekelijke popsong. En hun album The big lad in the windmill staat propvol met vlotte deuntjes, heel opvallend. In Nederland helaas geen echt hitsucces, in de UK wel.

Op 33 In Tua Nua, een Ierse band en (las ik toevallig recent in een ander topic hier), de eerste band die tekende op U2's eigen label Mother. En dat was meteen een heel goeie: Seven into the sea heeft een geweldig opgebouwd steeds swingender intro en dat niveau wordt de hele song lang volgehouden; zelfs menig U2-song haalt dit niveau niet.. Erg spijtig dus dat na deze single kwaliteit en succes al snel wegebden.

Op 34 de bij menigeen al hoog genoteerde David Sylvian met Taking the veil.Hoewel dit staat op het enige album van na 1980 dat in mijn album top 10 aller tijden staat (!), zal dit toch maar een klein succes worden in mijn top 40. Deels omdat ik op dit moment de song en met name de sound niet genoeg op waarde schatte, deels toch ook omdat het van de vocale songs op Gone to Earth ook wel het minst sterke is. Maar als opwarmer voor al het heerlijks dat komen gaat, is het heel geschikt.

Na deze vier toch wel klassieke songs komt ook El Debarge binnen met Who's Johnny, een grote hit en een erg vlot liedje, maar het kan toch niet in de schaduw staan van de andere binnenkomers.

1. Boris Gardiner - I Want To Wake Up With You
Reggae op zijn softst, vond ik destijds beter dan nu maar het blijft een lekker zwoel plaatje met mooie zang.
Cijfer: 7

15. Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Way It Is
Het is vooral de sprankelende piano dat het nummer onvergetelijk maakt. Frisse en radiovriendelijke pop van tijdloze kwaliteit.
Cijfer: 8,5

De hits van BZN hebben minder goed de tand des tijd doorstaan door de wat melige en kitscherige arrangementen. Al zit de sfeer er wel in en hoor ik de vakmanschap er in.

Dit heeft nog minder de tand des tijds doorstaan dan BZN door de mechanische productie die typisch is in die tijd. Refrein blijft wel enigszins hangen.

26. Haagse Harry en Hollandscheveldse Hendrik - Holland Rep
Stelt muzikaal niet veel voor (kopie van MC Miker G & DJ Sven dat dan weer gebaseerd is op Holiday van Madonna maar tekstueel is dat beter dan bv. Boef (als ik toch een vergelijking moet maken).

27. Peter Cetera - Glory Of Love (Theme from The Karate Kid, Part II)
Aalgladde en zoete ballad van Chicago-voorman die nauwelijks verschilt van zijn Chicago-ballads. Hoeft voor mij ook niet.

28. The Lover Speaks - No More I Love Yous
Ken ik meer in de coverversie van Annie Lennox en die waardeer ik meer vanwege de soberder productie, die is hier te tijdsgebonden al mag het nummer op zich er zeker zijn.

29. Hammond and West - Give A Little Love
Een beetje in de lijn van Boris Gardiner maar iets minder. Aardige softreggae met kinderkoor, niet meer en niet minder.

30. Imagination - Sunshine
Klinkt nog niet slecht met aangename vocalen en ritme, jammer dat de synths iets te nadrukkelijk aanwezig zijn.

Dat is vreemd, want er zijn meerdere clips van: No More I Love Yous - The Lover Speaks - YouTube

Inmiddels in orde gebracht, clip beluisterd en beoordeeld.

Het zal voor vele wel weer veel te commercieel zijn of we voelen ons er te groot voor om in de lijst op te nemen, want veronderstel toch dat je "muzieksmaak" wordt aangetast en dat je niet meer "serieus" wordt genomen hier

Aan de top geen verandering, want R.E.M. houdt fluitend stand op nummer 1.

Een sixpack aan nieuwkomers deze week en zien we Might Mighty met Is There Anyone Out There? als hoogste nieuweling op 14 de lijst betreden, het doet mij een beetje denken aan de muziek van The Housemartins.

Als we de eerste pianoklanken horen van Bruce Hornsby weten we gelijk over welk nummer het gaat, herkenbaarheid troef dus met The Way It Is.

Pretty In Pink van The Psychedelic Furs stamt eigenlijk uit 1981, maar in 1986 opnieuw succesvol mede door de film met de gelijknamige naam Pretty In Pink.

The Nits leveren altijd kwaliteit af en dat is met Typist Of Candy niet anders, een band om te koesteren dus.

David Sylvian en Crowded House zien we Top 10 binnenkomen en The Smiths heeft alweer een Top 3 notering te pakken met Panic.

Een prachtige nieuwe single van OMD, wordt nog net gepasseerd door een band die, jawel, The Bible heet. En dan ook nog de titel Graceland.

Heeft helemaal niets te maken met het nieuwe album van Paul Simon. De band heeft wel goed geluisterd naar The Smiths en daar het ADHD gehalte uitgehaald. Met uiteindelijk een prima resultaat.

Alle nieuwe singles overigens zeer het beluisteren waard, zelfs Bruce Hornsby viel mij bij herkennis maken erg mee.

Stormachtig was het debuut van Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1984, maar in 1986 is de grootste opwinding toch wel verdwenen.
Rage Hard is best een aardige single, maar ook wel een herhaling van zetten te noemen oftewel het verrast eigenlijk niet meer.

De opvolger Warriors (Of The Wasteland) valt bij mij meer in de smaak.

Maar blijkbaar heeft deze, begin dit jaar (ik noem een 23 januari) geen (of te weinig) indruk gemaakt
