Nu staat The way it is alweer op 1, maar Come on home bedreigt hem meteen vanaf nummer 2.

Zes binnenkomers maar liefst, waaronder weer wat halve en hele klassiekers. Op 17 The Smiths, die inmiddels een vaste waarde zijn geworden, op hun hoogtepunt. Panic is tegelijk wat donkerder en wat vrolijker dan anders; en wat krijg je dan? Een kinderkoor dat Hang the DJ zingt.

Op 22 Paul Simon met een van zijn grootste hits aller tijden, You can call me Al, met Zuid-Afrikaanse ritmes, vrolijke blazers en een clip waarin Paul zijn rol ruilt met die van Chevy Chase, wat een komisch effect heeft (al vind ik het ook wat flauw).

Op 24 maakt The The zich bozer dan ooit, met een aanklacht tegen het feit dat de UK zich overlevert aan het kapitalisme van de USA. Matt Johnson houdt sowieso de vinger goed aan de pols, want uit deze tijd stamt ook de albumtrack Armageddon days are here again met de verontrustende tekst: Islam is rising, the Christians mobilising...

Op 30 komt Frankie goes to Hollywood na 2 jaar eindelijk met een vervolg op het gigantische succes van Welcome to the pleasure dome. Rage hard heeft een goede titel, een aardig refrein maar overtuigt niet echt. En er zit ook geen schandaal aan vast.

Op 33 een curieuze song van Falco, The sound of musik, met zijn kenmerkende raps, orkestrale muziek en verwijzingen naar de muziekgeschiedenis, onder andere de openingslyrics van Rapper's delight (later ook verwerkt door Las Ketchup; kenden zij deze versie?).

Op 37 een adequate ballad van Peter Cetera, de zanger van Chicago, uit de film Karate Kid II. Mooi gezongen, maar het overtuigt toch niet helemaal.

1. Dan Hartman - Waiting To See You
Weinig geïnspireerde AOR dat nauwelijks blijft hangen en ook in de vergetelheid is beland itt zijn vorige singles.
Cijfer: 4

25. Tina Turner - Typical Male
Wellicht één van haar betere singles door het refrein en het ritme, haar zang is erg krachtig en vormt een tegenwicht voor de vrij gladde productie.
Cijfer: 8

26. Gwen Guthrie - Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent
Wederom een swingend nummer met soulvolle zang en sterke baslijn, had beslist een hogere hitnotering verdiend.
Cijfer: 7

27. Avanti - Dansen Met Z'n Twee
Nog enigszins te verteren vanwege de zonnige sfeer en het ritme al klinkt het wel simpel en ook wat tijdsgebonden.
Cijfer: 4,5

28. Juliane Werding - Stimmen Im Wind
Dit is productioneel ook enigszins tijdsgebonden maar de sfeer, melodie en zang weten dit nummer hoger te tillen dan de gemiddelde Duitse hit in de top-40.

29. Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin - The Locomotion
Wat Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin met deze cover willen bewijzen begrijp ik niet. Het komt te gekunsteld over en mist de energie en levenslust van het origineel, van zulke nummers moet je gewoon afblijven.
Cijfer: 4,5

30. Felicity - Something About You
Een dance-nummer dat snel in de anonimiteit verdween wegens te banaal en matige zang.

Steve & Steve.

Hebben gemeen, dat ik ze eigenlijk uit het oog begon te verliezen, na aanvankelijk mooie successen in de jaren '80.

Steve Jansen was drummer bij Japan. De grote man hier was altijd David Sylvian. Hij schreef bijna alles voor Japan, tot het bewierrookte album Tin Drum (1981). Ik zie opeens credits voor Jansen, voor de tracks Visions of China en met name Canton. Twee toptracks van Tin Drum, vooral Canton doet altijd wel een traantje wegpikken.

Maar Japan viel al snel uit elkaar en David Sylvian werd logischerwijze de te volgen man. Jansen viel, zeg ik nu, helaas een beetje weg in mijn belangstelling.
Nu hoor ik Stay close en de titel is vrij aardig gekozen. Jansen blijft inderdaad vrij dicht bij de ingeslagen weg van Tin Drum. Hij koos Yukihiro Takahashi om samen mee te musiceren en een mooie lichtvoetige song met een oosterse feel blijft over. De track had echter ook van Gentlemen take polaroids kunnen afkomen of Quiet life. Mooi gedaan.

De andere Steve, Winwood, verdween uit mijn zicht omdat het animo om albums van hem te kopen na Talking Back in the Night (1982) was afgenomen. Ik had hem echter makkelijk kunnen blijven volgen. Want minder is het er in ieder geval niet van geworden. Freedom overspill een fraaie single.

De hoogste nieuwe op 27 van The Human League, met Human, een soort titelnummer van de band dus. Ze klinken serieuzer dan ooit, met een ballad vol zelfverontschuldiging. Aparte instrumentatie ook, toch blijft het prettig beluisteren.

Op 28 weer eens een ouderwetse discosingle (in de loop der jaren worden ze steeds schaarser in mijn lijst), van Gwen Guthrie, die het standaardthema liefde nu eens vermengt met geldzorgen; daar is ze ook de eerste niet mee, maar ze klinkt erg zelfverzekerd en het swingt ook behoorlijk.

Op 31 The Bible met vriendelijke gitaarpop. Aan Graceland zal niemand zich ergeren, maar ik vond het eerlijk gezegd ook niet erg bijzonder.

Op 32 The Strangers die een heel liedje op een woordgrap (Nice in Nice) bouwen. Zeker niet een van hun sterkste songs.

Op 33 Killing Joke met een soort Love like blood revisited, inclusief spannend oplopende synths. Maar dat mag, want het is dezelfde band, en Adorations klinkt ook gewoon lekker.

Het meest onbekend is de laagste binnenkomer, Martin Ansell, een Britse singer-songwriter die verder niet erg bekend is. Big drum kan ik zelfs niet op Youtube vinden, andere singles wel, hij klinkt wat Howard Jones/Rupert Hine-achtig.

Tipparade: week 35 van 1986.

1. Hollywood Beyond - What's The Colour Of Money?
Hun enige hit maar het is vooral ritmisch een aanstekelijk nummer dat bovendien goed de tand des tijds heeft doorstaan.
Cijfer: 7,5

18. RUN-DMC - Walk This Way
RUN-DMC was één van de belangrijkste hiphophands in de jaren '80 en hier combineerden zij rap en rock op zeer geslaagde wijze. Agressief en erg opwindend met weergaloze gitaarsolo, misschien wel de beste hiphopsingle ooit. De albumversie vind ik nog beter.
Cijfer: 9,5

19. Stan Ridgway - Camouflage
Ook hier niets dan lof. Erg boeiende en pakkende tekst over de Vietnamoorlog en dit in een country/folkachtig nummer gegoten met kenmerkende banjo en sterk refrein.
Cijfer: 9

25. Gerard Joling - Spanish Heart
Zou een nummer van Julio Iglesias kunnen zijn. Gerard Joling heeft een mooie stem maar het nummer is mij te glad en ook wat zoet.
Cijfer: 5,5

26. Jaki Graham - Breaking Away
Dit nummer doet mij niet veel meer door het slappe refrein en de overproductie. Jammer want Jaki Graham zingt niet onaardig.
Cijfer: 4

27. Het Goede Doel - Zwijgen
Eén van de betere Nederpopbands in de jaren "80 met een ritmisch en tekstueel sterk nummer. Ook goede baslijn en rijke arrangementen.
Cijfer: 8

28. The Human League - Human
Het vet is van de soep bij Human League maar dit is nog een zeer degelijke single met pakkende melodie en tekst.
Cijfer: 7,5

Daryl Hall begint langzaam maar zeker steeds meer een "bedreiging" te vormen voor R.E.M. en staat nog maar op 2 punten.

De Top 3 staat overigens al voor de 3e week op rij muurvast.

Vier nieuwkomers deze week waarvan Black met Wonderful Life op 15 de hoogste nieuweling is, de versie van Mathilde Santing mag er trouwens ook zijn van dit nummer, althans dat vind ik.

(Forever) Live And Die van OMD voldoet aan alle ingrediënten om er een grote hit mee te scoren al zullen de echt grote hits na dit nummer voorlopig uitblijven in Nederland.

Toto doet het in hun bekende stijl met I'll Be Over You en blijft hiermee keurig binnen de lijntjes en dat bedoelen we zeker niet negatief

De verrassing is er inmiddels wel af bij Frankie Goes To Hollywood die met hun 'nieuwe' single Rage Hard nog wel behoorlijk weet te scoren en nu dus ook binnenkomt in de weeklijst al is het voorlopig magertjes.

Het wordt eens tijd voor je favoriete band.
Ze hebben twee singles uit, en niet de minsten

Ja zeg...ga ze nog meer promoten ?

Maar ik meende dat John net als ranboy hier alleen zijn oude lijstjes van toen publiceerde.
Ik kan het verkeerd hebben.

Klopt ja, maar hij beloofde dat ze dit jaar in zijn lijsten op zouden duiken.
Vandaar dat ik het me afvraag.

Mijn top 10 lijstjes staan vast ....
Spijtig genoeg want ik zie die parels ook voorbij komen

Mijn huidige lijstaanvoerder: brrrrr......maar vond het toen een heerlijk lazy nummer. Kocht toen ook zijn album maar daar kreeg ik al snel spijt van.
In die tijd volgde ik alle Nederlandse hitlijsten (gelukkig ook de VV15!) en de BRT Top 30.
Die schreef ik allemaal op in een (nog) bestaande mappen.
De Engelse/Amerikaanse hitlijsten gingen aan mij voorbij. Gelukkig maar want ik had zat huiswerk (school) te doen

En elke week is ook weer een verrassing voor mij want ik blader nooit door. Dus heb nu geen idee hoe de top 10 van volgende week eruit gaat zien.... Zal toch nog wel een single van deze heren voorbij komen?

Edit: toch stiekem gedaan en over drie weken komt Panic binnen in mijn lijst op plek 10

Tipparade: week 36 van 1986.

1. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Rage Hard
Een nummer met veel pretentie en vooral bombast maar net aan de goede kant van de lijn. Niettemin beginnen ze voorspelbaar te worden.
Cijfer: 6,5

24. Sinitta - So Macho
Dat is dan weer wegwerpmateriaal. De - nu gedateerde - productie is belangrijker dan de inhoud en vocaal is het erg mager.
Cijfer: 3

25. Princess - Tell Me Tomorrow
Nog een vergeten nummer dat enkel die tijd een hit kon worden. Dat werd het zelfs niet en het slappe refrein droeg daar wellicht bij.
Cijfer: 3,5

26. George Benson - Kisses In The Moonlight
George Benson is dan wel een talent met mooie stem maar die productie - gladder dan een schaatsbaan - fnuikt zijn soul enigszins.
Cijfer: 5,5

27. Everything But The Girl - Come On Home
Behoorlijke ballad met smaakvollere en vrij sfeervolle arrangementen al is de zang wat aan de vlakke kant.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - (Forever) Live And Die
Aanstekelijk is het natuurlijk wel - vooral de baslijn - maar net als bij Frankie Goes To Hollywood begint de sleet erin te komen.
Cijfer: 7

29. Dennie Christian - Kom Ga Maar Met Me Mee
Banale schlager waarbij ik een déjà-vu gevoel heb ... inderdaad het is een cover van Tony Marshall - Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand (week 6 van 1972).

30. It Bites - Calling All The Heroes
Een vergeten band, klinkt typisch van die tijd met een overdaad aan synths maar het refrein mag er zijn.
