Op 26 weer zo'n prachtige ballad van Randy Crawford, Almaz, helaas alweer bijna vergeten maar hopelijk niet vergeefs hier gememoreerd.

Op 28 Toto met ook een prima ballad, die ook lekker met de deur in huis valt en een mooie melancholieke toon heeft.

Op 29 is OMD nog steeds op het hitsuccespad en dit nummer dreutelt heel aangenaam voort dus weer moeiteloos een top 10 hit.

Op 31 Take my breath away van Berlin uit de kaskraker Topgun; maar ook op zichzelf staand is het een klassieker geworden die voor mij helaas wel wat grijsgedraaid is.

Op 32 Rosie Vela met haar bekendste song, Magic smile, dat leunt op een lekker laidbackritme en een fraaie lichthese stem.

Op 34 de zoveelste single van Simply Red van hun debuutalbum, en ook deze is goed en zelfs behoorlijk eigenwijs.

In het Nederlands gezongen door Karin Bloemen, maar die versie wordt weer compleet weggeblazen door Noortje Herlaar wat mij betreft en als halverwege ook de trompet nog zijn intrede doet + de schitterende arrangementen ..... hoe mooi wil je het hebben

R.E.M. inmiddels alweer voor de 5e week op nummer 1 en waar ook de Top 3 al 4 weken muurvast zit.

Slechts 2 nieuwelingen en die vinden we in de staart van de lijst op 19 en 20 en dat zijn Died Pretty en Europe en het heeft voor The Final Countdown heel wat moeite gekost om in de weeklijst te geraken, maar ja de aanhouder wint zullen we maar zeggen.

We zien OMD en FGTH nog aardig wat plekken winst boeken, maar verder is het best een "rustige" week te noemen.

We zien "ineens" Mama Told Me van Fantastique uit 1981 in de Engelse hitlijsten verschijnen, het hoe en waarom dit nummer pas in 1986 daar zomaar in terecht komt is mij eerlijk gezegd ontgaan maar aangezien het niet vanzelfsprekend is dat Nederlandse artiesten in de Engelse hitlijsten te vinden zijn nog maar een keer volop in de schijnwerpers oftewel come on everybody, hit the floor ......

Weinig verandering bovenin; misschien dat In Tua Nua binnenkort kan doordringen in de top 4.

Zes binnenkomers, en allemaal op een rij in de 30. De hoogste is Don't leave me this way, een cover van The Communards. De versie van Thelma Houston kende ik al goed, en had bij mij in 1976 al op gestaan. Met covers probeer ik me aan de regel vast te houden: profiteren ze van de originele song en klinkt het daardoor goed, of voegen ze een eigen element toe en waardeer ik de cover an sich? Erg subjectief natuurlijk maar The Communards gunde ik graag het voordeel van de twijfel. Don't leave me this way is het ultieme feestlied waarmee je elke dansvloer in beweging blijft. Grappig is dat de zang van de man (Jimmy Somerville) aanmerkelijk hoger is dan de zang van de vrouw (Sarah Jane Morris); ik betwijfel of daar meer van zulke duidelijke voorbeelden bestaan.

Op 34 Janet Jackson, die ook in haar beste doen is. When I think of you is een swingende ballad (of iets dergelijks), waarbij vooral de synths de boel flink opzwepen.

Op 35 Cyndi Lauper met True colors, een lief liedje dat later ook wel klassieke status verwierf. En nee, de cover van Phil Collins gaat later niet mijn top 40 halen.

Op 36 de band America die in de seventies een grote hit scoorden met Horse with no name, maar bij mij nog veel meer gewaardeerd worden om prachtige songs als Sister Golden Hair en Ventura Highway (met de geweldige Alligator Lizards in the air). Maar nu You can do magic: een aardig degelijke rocksong zonder veel extra.

Op 37 een wel erg ontspannen klinkend XTC met Grass, Doet het goed op een nazomerse middag.

En op 38 Depeche Mode, dat op A question of time erg gejaagd klinkt (wat goed bij de inhoud past), maar niet erg memorabel klinkt.

Ik wist helemaal niet meer dat You Can Do Magic opnieuw was uitgebracht in Nederland in 1986
Maar het plezier is er zeker niet meer om, één van mijn topfavorieten van America

Ik heb het even teruggekeken en dit was de nummer 6 in mijn jaarlijst over 1982 en was destijds Top 10 werk in Amerika.

Het refrein bekt ozo lekker weg:

Volgende week weer binnen in mijn lijst

Kijk dit is ook een reden waarom ik meedoe aan deze topics. Nooit geweten dat dit een nummer van America was.

Vocaal kan ze niet tippen aan haar broer Michael maar productioneel en ritmisch is het wel geslaagd met sterke baslijn.
Cijfer: 7,5

19. Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al
Even inventieve en geraffineerde als aanstekelijke single die nooit verveelt, een mengeling van Westerse pop met Afrikaanse wereldmuziek, hier zit alles perfect in elkaar.
Cijfer: 9,5

22. Corry Konings & Koos Alberts - Ik Wil Altijd Bij Jou Zijn
Jammer dat daarna zo'n meligheid moet komen. Vooral als ze samen zingen is het niet te doen.
Cijfer: 2

25. Berlin - Take My Breath Away

Een ballad van Cyndi Lauper en zeker geen slechte: smaakvol geproduceerd en met de nodige expressie gezongen.

Behoort beslist tot de betere Nederpop. Herkenbare stem, sterke tekst en melodie en functionele synths die het nummer niet te glad maken.

Pussycat-zangeres doet het solo. Redelijk nummer met volle en sterk refrein, doet niet onder voor de meeste Pussycat-hits.

Drie nieuwelingen in de lijst en zien we The Chameleons met Swamp Thing op 15 als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomen, een aangenaam stukje "pokke herrie" met Iron Maiden vinden we op 18 en 'Til Tuesday sluit de rij als het gaat om de nieuwkomers.

Crowded House lijkt zijn langste tijd gehad te hebben met de duikeling van 6 naar 16.

Alweer 5 weken op 1, en dat is voor de meeste nummer 1-hits ook de laatste week; en dit keer ook.

Op 22 komt zomaar de Little River Band binnen met een ballad met een hoog meezinggehalte, Forever blue.Hoewel de klasse ervan straalt, wordt het toch geen hit in NL. Nog vreemder is dat het bij re-release in 1995 alsnog een flinke hit wordt.

Op 28 Topper Headon (ex-The Clash) met de opvolger van het swingende Leave it to luck: Got to keep on going. Het staat me bij dat dit dankzij aanhoudend gedraai van een VARA-DJ een single werd in NL (niet in de rest van de wereld) en een hit in de Verrukkelijke 15, maar niet in de top 40. De song heeft dat mooie gedrevene waardoor je wordt meegesleept. De geweldige zang is van Jimmy Helms.

Op 33 de grote Amerikaanse hit van The Cutting Crew, met aanstekelijk toetsenwerk en passievol gezongen. Opmerkelijk dat ze deze hit hierna bij lange na niet hebben kunnen herhalen.

Op 38 de Talking Heads die helaas steeds minder inventief werden en met Wild wild life nog maar met moeite mijn top 40 haalden.

En op 39 de oude Steve Winwood met een liedje dat ik na het draaien alweer vergeten ben...

En net als in het 1992-topic kan ik hier aankondigen dat volgende week een plaat binnenkomt, die wekenlang in onze gezamenlijke lijst op 1 zal staan. Correctie: hij staat al wekenlang op 1... (en het is nog dezelfde band als in 1992 ook).

1. Don Johnson - Heartbeat
Miami Vice-acteur heeft ook een hit beet en een grote nog wel. Niet het soort (opgeblazen) rock dat ik verkies maar hij kan wel aardig zingen.

18. Engelbert - The Spanish Night is over
Een comeback van Engelbert Humperdinck met een Engelstalige schlager. Klinkt al even belegen dan zijn jaren '60-hits.
Cijfer: 3,5

23. Cameo - Word Up
Stevige funkrock dat enigszins door Prince is beïnvloed. Hoewel vrij tijdsgebonden staat dit nummer nu nog overeind.
Cijfer: 7

24. Klymaxx + Man Size Love
Hier is de tijdsgebonden productie eerder een minpunt. De zang is ook matig in dit fletse nummer.

27. Talking Heads - Wild, Wild Life
Talking Heads heeft nog nooit een slechte single uitgebracht en dit is wederom raak. Een vrolijke en levenslustige song met meezingtekst die niet verveelt en in je hoofd blijft hangen.
