Slechts twee nieuwkomers deze week in de lijst en is het na The Nits wederom Hollands Glorie met Fatal Flowers die we als hoogste nieuweling zien binnenkomen op 13, de Cocteau Twins is de andere en die is te vinden op 19.

De Simple Minds, New Order en FGTH boeken aardig wat plaatsen winst en zien we aan de top geen verandering m.b.t. vorige week.

Als Paul McCartney er speciaal voor gaat zitten om een kersthit te schrijven, eindigt dat meestal in nogal wat zoetsappige muziek, van het niveau waar formeel gesproken je glazuur spontaan van gaat barsten.

Voor de tijd van het jaar en alles er om heen gaat het nog net. Maar daar buiten zou A Wonderful Christmas Time of We all stand together met pek en veren zijn bejegend.

Totdat McCartney niets vermoedend een album heeft volgeschreven (in dit geval Press to Play) waarbij één specifieke track een geweldige donkere-dagen-rond-kerstsfeer weet op te roepen. Onbewust dus en hierdoor één van de betere december songs die McCartney ooit heeft neergepend. Moge het gelijk ook leiden tot een betere beoordeling van het bijbehorende album....

De Sint is weer veilig aangekomen in Spanje dus nu ruim baan voor de aankomende kersttijd en zien we Chris Rea direct behoorlijk gas geven met zijn Driving Home For Christmas.

Een hele leuke Iggy Pop zien we op 26, lekker catchy en de vaart zit er lekker in

Windforce 11 van Nadieh past natuurlijk uitstekend in dit jaargetijde of het er voor gemaakt is

Op het eerste gezicht ziet deze lijst er niet bijzonder uit, maar in de top gebeurt toch iets zeldzaams: Don't give up stijgt terug naar de eerste plaats, na twee weken ervan afgehouden te zijn door Silver moon. Achteraf vind ik Silver moon veel mooier, maar toen was de praktische situatie nu eenmaal dat Silver moon nergens meer gedraaid werd en Don't give up een grote top 10 hit...

Op 25 Paul Young met Some people (geen verband met de hit van Cliff Richard), weer zo'n plaat die ik al zo'n 30 jaar niet meer gehoord heb, maar ik herkende hem nog en het refrein was nog overtuigend.

Op 30 blijken The Kinks na 25 jaar nog steeds goede muziek te kunnen maken. Natuurlijk is het nogal nostalgisch en haalt het het niet bij de sixties classics, maar het is een mooie oprechte tekst, goed gezongen en gespeeld.

Op 35 gaat Ultravox in de hoogste stand van melodrama, met spaarzame Keltisch klinkende begeleiding, bezwerende zang en apocalyptische teksten. Midge Ure komt er nog net mee weg.

Op 37 de opvolger alweer van het sterke Wasted years, en Stranger in a strange land is wat minder vlot, maar eigenlijk nog gepassioneerder. De titel verwijst overigens naar een bekende roman van SF-schrijver Robert A. Heinlein.

Op 39 komt ook nog net de opvolger van klassieker The final countdown binnen. Rock the night klinkt vergeleken daarmee erg alledaags en flauw; wel een grote top 40 hit, maar bij mij een schamel resultaat.

1. Madonna - Open Your Heart
Wat minder dan haar vorige hits in die zin dat het mij minder aanspreekt (en productioneel is het wat te mechanisch) maar zeker meer dan een voldoende waard.
Cijfer: 7

19. Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman - All I Ask Of You
Weliswaar zoet maar ook erg romantisch, dit past perfect in deze tijd van het jaar en vocaal kunnen ze er ook wat van.
Cijfer: 6,5

25. Glass Tiger - Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)
Wat clichématige en overgeproduceerde AOR met veel blazers en synths, typisch voor die tijd.
Cijfer: 5

27. Breakout - Swing Out Sister
Jazzy getinte pop in eigentijds jasje, heeft de tand des tijds redelijk doorstaan en hier bieden de blazers een meerwaarde.
Cijfer: 7

28. Koto - Jabdah
Mechanische elektronische pop dat ook enkel die tijd gebracht kon worden. Melodie is enigszins aanstekelijk maar veel stelt het verder niet voor.
Cijfer: 5

29. Alison Moyet - Is This Love?
Haar prima soulvolle zang en sterke, aanstekelijke song trekken dit nummer ruim boven de middelmaat niettegenstaande de productie ook enigszins tijdsgebonden is.
Cijfer: 8

30. Kinks - How are you
The Kinks, die had ik niet verwacht. Een vergeten maar prettig nummer van deze legendarische band - zang en tekst staan nog steeds op punt - maar natuurlijk geen partij voor hun jaren '60-hits.

Verdwenen uit de lijst:

Na 4 weken op nummer 2 te hebben gestaan is het dan eindelijk raak voor Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush, want wie niet opgeeft wordt uiteindelijk dan toch beloond.

Wekenlang voerde de Pet Shop Boys de lijst aan met Suburbia, maar deze week duikelen ze dan toch hard naar beneden en zijn ze op 14 te vinden.

Vier nieuwkomers begroeten we dit keer in de lijst en waar Peter Gabriel zegt Hi There op nummer 11 met zijn Big Time.

Het sfeervolle Don't Dream It's Over van Crowded House komen we tegen op 16 en Genesis met Land Of Confusion op 17 en al luisterend naar dit nummer is er maar bar weinig overgebleven van het Genesis uit de jaren 70.
OMD sluit de rij binnenkomers af met We Love You.

De Simple Minds stoten door naar 2 en waar de Fatal Flowers het goed doen in hun 2e week.

Ik heb overigens genoeg ruimte overgelaten voor degene die nog geen lijst hadden ingeleverd, maar zelfs een stukje coulance mocht niet baten ........

Verder nog andere oudjes waar je altijd op kunt vertrouwen, Status Quo en Toto.

En dat wordt ook zeker gewaardeerd

Na een tweewekelijkse onderbreking lijkt Don't give up weer vast op de eerste plek te staan; Silver moon zakt verder weg.

Op 17 komen de Pretenders sterk terug met een sfeervolle ballad, Hymn to her, en dit was een ode van Chrissie Hynde aan haar moeder. Mede dankzij het seizoen kon dit nog een aardige hit worden.

Op 27 nog een erg sfeervolle plaat vol nostalgie, Younger days van onze eigen Fatal Flowers. De thematiek is gelijk aan die van Glory days van Bruce Springsteen, maar Younger days is wel wat subtieler en melancholieker.

Op 34 komen The Monkees binnen met een van hun gouwe ouwen, Daydream believer. Altijd lastig waar je zulke platen in je top 40 zet, maar binnen is-ie alvast.

Op 36 het summum van stemmigheid, Elton John en Cliff Richard verenigen hun vocale krachten met een vrij donker lied dat geen kerstsingle is maar er toch wel voor het seizoen gemaakt is/lijkt te zijn. Het is mooi om beide sterke zangers samen te horen zingen, en het liedje is ook niet slecht.

En op 37 debuteert Erasure, het duo bestaande uit Vince Clark (ex Depeche Mode en ex Yazoo) en Andy Bell. Nog tientallen singles zouden volgen, en in de UK bijna evenzoveel hits, maar in Nederland bleef het bij slechts drie hits. Sometimes is ook wel hun beste single, een ideale combinatie van commercieel vlot en opmerkelijk gepassioneerd.

Tipparade-lijst van week 50, 1986 - top40.nl

1. Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Een band die ik nooit tot mijn favorieten heb gerekend (klinkt mij té Amerikaans) maar dit is wel een erg aanstekelijk nummer met meebrulrefrein.
Cijfer: 8

19. Zangeres Zonder Naam & Normaal - Rock around the clock
Een opmerkelijke combinatie en het klinkt nog niet onaardig, het spelplezier zit er duidelijk in.
Cijfer: 6

24. Debbie Harry - French Kissin'
Er was nog leven voor haar na Blondie. De Blondie-hits waardeer ik meer maar maar dit is ook een vlot en poppy nummer waarin zij bewijst toch wel een goede zangeres te zijn. Die sax zorgt voor afwisseling.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. Gerard Cox - Die Laaielichter
Ik weet niet meer van wie het origineel is, Gerard Cox giet dat tenminste in eigen vorm ipv. platweg te kopiëren.
Cijfer: 6

26. Iron Maiden - Stranger In A Strange Land
Plots scoort Iron Maiden hits omdat hardrock en metal plots terug in waren. Weliswaar theatraal maar energiek met excellent gitaarwerk en inderdaad net toegankelijk genoeg voor een hitnotering.
Cijfer: 8

27. Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Hun tweede hit deze band kennen wij nog van Dance Hall Days en daarna niets meer, een two-hit wonder. Dit nummer blijft net als zijn voorganger beslist hangen maar opzienbarend ... neen.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. Michael McDonald - No Lookin' Back
Degelijke blanke soul - Michael McDonald is een prima zanger - maar te glad geproduceerd met te overheersende synths. Refrein is ook wat lauw.
Cijfer: 5,5

29. José - All Around My Hat
Dit is dan weer een foute cover die niet toevoegt, laat ik maar het origineel van Steeleye Span aanraden.
Cijfer: 4

30. Richenel - Dance Around the World
Een Nederlandse travestiet met een nummer waarvan de productie typisch van die tijd is maar het swingt wel als de neten en de zang is zeker niet slecht.
Cijfer: 7

dit heb ik in mijn jeugd ook in Engeland op de radio gehoord dus hij heeft het nog ver gebracht toen

Hij had natuurlijk een androgyn uiterlijk maar daarmee ben je toch niet direct een travestiet

Het was inderdaad een behoorlijk grote hit in bepaalde Europese landen

Zo is dat (het eerste), vigil.

En Richenel heeft meer fraaie nummers op zijn repertoire staan.

De drie nieuwkomers passen zich uitstekend aan de tijd van het jaar aan en waar Chris Rea binnen komt racen op nummer 6 op weg naar huis ........
The Smithereens en Paul McCartney complementeren het aantal nieuwelingen deze week.

New Order komt de Top 3 binnen en voor de rest valt er niet zo heel veel te vertellen alleen dat volgende week de laatste weeklijst wordt geplaatst en later volgt nog de jaarlijst over 1986.

It ain't over 'til it's over, dus voor mij volgende week nog wel een lijst. Desalnietemin: zomaar opeens bijna klaar met 1986. Er ligt nog wat interessant grut van de laatste weken, waar de huidige hitparades, in hun status quo van de kerst, niet meer aan toe komen.

Of in ieder geval geen interesse meer toonden voor Jackson, Cheap Trick en Boston. Toch is de notering meer dan gerechtvaardigd. Volgende week kan alles wat er nog is overgebleven van 1986 alsnog in de strijd worden geworpen.
