Klinkt net hetzelfde als hun vorige hit Showing Out, die Stock-Aitken-Waterman-producties zijn lopende bandwerk. Desondanks nog best te pruimen.

Nog eens een prima single van Duran Duran door het ritme, het refrein en de blazers daarin. Simon Le Bon zingt hier ook op zijn best.

Niet echt opzienbarende maar vrij aangename jazzy single, weliswaar ook vrij glad maar smaakvolle arrangementen.

26. Spandau Ballet - How Many Lies
Vakkundige maar weinig memorabele en ook wat voorspelbare song, Spandau Ballet begint op routine te drijven.

27. John Hendrikx - Cry Softly Lonely One
Geen clip gevonden.

28. Two People - Heaven
Een vergeten song van een vergeten band, het mist inderdaad eigenheid en uitstraling en het nummer lijkt ook overgeproduceerd.

29. Europe - Carrie
Hun vorige singles vond ik wel tof maar deze gladde power- maar kwijlballad is niet aan mij besteed.

30. Queen - Pain Is So Close To Pleasure
Queen heeft ook duidelijk betere tijden gekend. Op zich geen slecht nummer met goede falsetzang maar verder vrij doorsnee voor hun doen.

Songs van verschillende pluimage maar allemaal even interessant.
Een prachtig rustig nummer van de Style Council.

En deze week is er natuurlijk het debuut van TTD, in mijn afkortingenlijst, en dan gaat het uiteraard om Terence Trent D'Arby. Is hij niet de man van één keer beroemd, een mooi en goed album en daarna dat niveau nooit meer gehaald? Jawel, dat is hij. En het jaar waarin zich dat gaat afspelen is 1987.

Niveau nooit meer gehaald ben ik toch niet met je eens. Symphony Or Damn (1993) is ook een uitermate sterk album. Mogelijk zelfs nog beter, in mijn herinnering. Zal hem weer eens opzetten.

Een luchtige en verdienstelijke reggae-cover van een nummer van Bread, hij geeft er alleszins een eigen draai aan.

25. The Cult - Love Removal Machine
Die riffs doen mij een beetje aan AC/DC denken, misschien mede daardoor even aanstekelijke als opwindende hardrock met peima zang ook.

26. Piet Veerman - Sailin' Home
Klinkt als een (zee)hymne met Schots tintje waarbij de zang nog zijn sterkste troef is. Slecht kan ik het niet noemen meer ik mis de charme en dat tikje mystiek van the Cats, het is mij ook te glad.

27. The Blow Monkeys - It Doesn't Have to Be This Way
Deze single reken ik ook tot de categorie aanvaardbaar (mede danzij het ritme en de saxofoon) maar het is ook een tikkeltje vlak.

28. Cherry - My Second Skin
Een nummer dat te onopvallend en te doorsnee is en snel tussen de plooien valt. De zang is ook vrij dunnetjes.

29. Janet Jackson- Let's Wait Awhile
Lieflijke en zoete ballad, ik hoor toch liever daar dence-nummers. Al klinkt het in zijn geheel best charmant.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. Elsa Lunghini T'en Vas Pas
Dit is ook een lieftallig maar zoutloos deuntje dat je snel vergeten bent. De productie helpt ook niet mee.

Met reuzenstappen pakt World Party de eerste plek, en terecht!

Zes binnenkomers, waarvan vier allang vergeten zijn, één nog wel eens gehoord wordt en één de status van klassieker dik bereikt heeft. Op 28 die klassieker, Prince met Sign o' the times. Tekstueel urgent en indringend, maar muzikaal doet het me wat minder; voor mij dus geen plaat die ik uit mezelf draai.

Op 30 een Franstalige jonge zangeres, Elsa. Typisch een liedje dat je als 'lief' kan omschrijven. In het refrein komt er nog wat vaart en melodie in, zodat het ook nu nog een prettig liedje is.

Op 33 Spandau Ballet met een degelijke ballad, zoals altijd met overtuiging gezongen, maar toch ook behoorlijk clichématig en moeilijk te verteren.

Op 33 The Juniors, een Nederlandse band die uit de VARA hoek kwam, met leden afkomstig uit andere bands. Het resultaat is wel erg rechttoe rechtaan rockend, niet vervelend maar ook totaal niet origineel of spannend.

Op 34 The Cult die hier duidelijk een koerswijziging heeft ondergaan, van new wave naar hardrock. Ik hoor liever de oude Cult, want dit klinkt wel erg AC/DC-achtig; alleen de zang is nog van vertrouwde klasse.

En op 35 Till Tuesday met een van hun vele geflopte songs, al 30 jaar niet meer gehoord. Het is verdienstelijk, maar ook wat standaard.

Welkom bij de beter laat dan nooit weeklijst We hebben een nieuwe nummer 1 en dat is het weergaloze Ship of Fools geworden. Dat never goes out ging wel heel snel uit eigenlijk Simply Red nadert de koppositie. Duran Duran, Genesis en Level 42 doen goede zaken, waar A-ha helemaal naar beneden dondert. 4 nieuwen deze week, alhoewel... John Farnham is een re-entry en Opportunities van Pet Shop Boys hebben we vast ook wel eens eerder gehoord De hoogste echte nieuwe is van Oran 'Juice' Jones. De naam zei mij helemaal niets, maar dat 80s dancy en synthi stuff is wel lekker en klinkt toch ergens wel bekend. Als laatste de overbekende kraker van Prince met zijn tekenen der tijden, voor velen top 3 werk, voor mij gaat ie de lijst niet halen

Op 24 komt U2 binnen met With or without you, de eerste single van hun album The Joshua Tree, en misschien wel hun meest succesvolle single ooit. De song bouwt rustig en langzaam op naar een gekweld gezongen refrein. Het klinkt sfeervol en duister, maar wat mij betreft wordt iets te veel tijd genomen om de song neer te zetten en na meerdere luisterbeurten wordt het wat saai, en dat is een begrip dat ik voorheen niet met U2 associeerde.

Op 30 de laatste single van Frankie goes to Hollywood. Opmerkelijk is Watching the wildlife wel: het is namelijk niet schokkend en uitdagend, maar juist een rustig, fraai liedje met een goeie melodie, beter dan de twee voorgaande singles van Liverpool en een waardig afscheid.

Op 31 A-Ha met Manhattan skyline, een lied met groot contrast tussen de rustige coupletten en de felle refreinen (de hardste die ik van deze band ken); hierdoor dreigt wel het gevaar van twee liedjes ineen, maar mede dankzij de altijd goeie zang van Morten Harket komt het toch nog goed.

Op 35 een nieuwe loot aan de singlerijke stam van Erasure, volgens het bekende recept. Nooit vervelend, maar ook niet opzienbarend.

Op 36 Billy Vera & the Beaters met At this moment, hier nog gewoon een Amerikaanse ballad, overigens al stammend uit 1981, maar niemand kon vermoeden dat dit liedje aan de basis zou staan van de carrière van de meest succesvolle Nederlandse artiest aller tijden, Marco Borsato, die dit in 1990 in de Soundmixshow zong en in een Engelse en Italiaanse versie opnam en meteen een dikke top 10 hit scoorde. Het origineel blijft een klassieker (als je ervan houdt).

1. Prince - Sign O' The Times
Apart ritme, sobere maar subtiel arrangementen en indringende tekst, dit is wederom Prince op zijn best.

10. Ben E. King - Stand By Me
Een onbetwiste soulklassieker (uit 1961) met gepassioneerde, indringende zang, uiterst sterke melodie en tekst en sublieme arrangementen. Zeer vaak gecoverd maar deze versie is nooit overtroffen.
Cijfer: 10

15. Carly Simon - Coming Around Again
Deze zangeres waren wij een beetje vergeten. Mooie, aangenaam warme stem heeft zij en het nummer klinkt ook lekker hoewel wat glad.

22. Freddie Mercury - The Great Pretender
Een cover van het aloude Platters-nummer met een dosis kitsch maar zijn krachtige zang en het einde maken toch een leuke versie van.
Cijfer: 7

23. Bruce Springsteen - Fire
Pointer Sisters scoorden daarmee een grote hit en hun versie vind ik net iets beter vanwege de soul maar deze live-versie is beslist ook sterk mede door de orgel en lange pauze.

24. Erasure - It Doesn't Have To Be
Sometimes vond ik een leuke hit, dit nummer lijkt erop en draagt duidelijk de stempel van Vince Clarke maar is merkelijk minder aanstekelijk en memorabel.
Cijfer: 5,5

25. Taffy - I love my Radio
Mechanische wegwerppop die aantoont waarom ik de hitmuziek in die jaren minder werd. Zang is ook niet best.

26. Bruce Willis - Respect Yourself
Acteur Bruce Willis covert een soulnummer van The Staple Singers. Verdienstelijk maar meer ook niet.
Cijfer: 6

27. René Shuman - Young Girls and Cadillac Cars
Een rock'n roll-nummer met lichte Elvis-invloeden. Alles behalve origineel maar die sax is wel leuk.
Cijfer: 5,5

28. Roxanna - Got me by the Heart
Kende ik niet, op zich niet onaardige ballad maar overgeproduceerd en weinig memorabel en de uitspraak is ook al een minpunt.
Cijfer: 4,5

29. Billy Vera & the Beaters - At This Moment
Dit soort pathetische ballads met overdreven uithalen hoeven voor mij niet, de blazers zijn hier bovendien te schel.
Cijfer: 3

30. Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)
Artistiek hoogstaand ga ik dit noemen maar het is wel vermakelijk en grappig met aanstekelijke riff.
Cijfer: 7,5
