Ook ik heb deze pas op latere leeftijd beluisterd vanwege negatieve kritieken. Ze vielen mij na beluistering erg mee. Beiden vind ik daarom behoorlijk onderschat. Their Satanic Majesties Request wordt m.i. ten onrechte met Sgt. Pepper vergeleken. Maar de Beatles en Stones zijn twee totaal verschillende wegen. De vergelijking vind ik eigenlijk alleen maar voor de hoes opgaan.
She's a rainbow is wel het beste nummer van het album. Die regenboog doet mij ergens aan denken.
Bij mij op 38. Pschydelische country. En die engel, die neerstort, dat doet mij ergens aan denken.
Het nummer lijkt traag maar dat is schijn. Het nummer heeft een bpm van 110, een marstempo ook wel moderato hetgeen matig snel betekent en vooral de noten lopen vlot achter elkaar aan. Maar door de temporisering van bepaalde instrumenten in combinatie met backtracking ontstaat een loom dromerig ge-luid. De uitgekozen clip is trouwens wel een stuk trager.

Ik heb verder nog niets over dit nummer gezegd in dit topic, dus wordt het tijd om een persoonlijk verhaal bij dit (voor mij geniale) nummer te vertellen.

Mijn oma was zeer godsdienstig in de calvinistische leer. Godsdienst is het opium voor het volk schreef Karl Marx ooit. En daar vond ik wel wat inzitten, dus probeerde ik mijn oma duidelijk te maken dat haar psalmenliedboek eigenlijk tot de psychedelica behoorde. En ondanks dat ik haar verzekerde dat ik een groot liefhebber was van psychedelische muziek werd mijn mening niet in dank afgenomen.
Volgens de maker van het nummer, Dave Mason, moeten we niet teveel achter het nummer zoeken. Maar Marzi denkt er weer het zijne van.

Boven het logeerbed bij mijn oma hing een fraai schilderij. De brede en de smalle weg. Een soort allegorie op het christelijke leven. In het kort gezegd komt het erop neer dat als je de gemakkelijke brede weg bewandelt dan kom je in de hel en als je de moeilijke smalle weg bewandelt in de hemel.

Ik had best veel discussies met mijn oma over deze prent. Want een klein kind dat vroeg dood gaat. Die kan niet de hele weg bewandelen. Waar komt die dan terecht?
Volgens mijn oma in de hemel gedragen op de rug van een engel.

Terwijl ik op een dag op dat bed lag luisterde ik naar "Hole in my shoe" en keek ik naar het schilderij.

Ik zag vooral heel veel traffic op de brede weg. En ineens viel het hele liedje samen met het schilderij.
Je ziet dezelfde elementen die Traffic gebruikt in het liedje ook in het schilderij maar dan door kinderogen. Dat lijkt kinderachtig maar aan de andere kant hebben kinderogen iets onbedorvens en zijn ze onbevangen, behelst met een grote verbeeldingskracht en spontane creativiteit. En dat zijn belangrijke elementen voor kunst.

Het eerste couplet speelt zich bovenin in het midden van het schilderij af. Het olifantsoog (elephant's eye) is het reusachtige oog van God. De lichtbundels en de regenboog lijken gedragen door een soort kerstboom die in het liedje een bellenblaasboom (bubblegum tree) is. De bellen bestaan vooral uit lucht en het is daar eigenlijk alleen maar lucht. Door een boom ging ooit het eerste paradijs verloren en de schimmige kloof onder de regenboog moet het verloren paradijs voorstellen.

Het tweede couplet speelt zich aan de linkerbovenkant van het schilderij af. Het is het einde van de brede weg. De hel. Daar is het oorlog. Je ziet de soldaatjes (hundred tin soldiers) in het veld voor de heuvel staan. Ze schieten met scherp. En als ze op je schouder schieten (Would shoot at my shoulder) dan lijd je langer. Want lijden hoort meer bij de hel dan overlijden.

Het derde couplet met de albatros (die m.i. een engel moet voorstellen) gaat over het einde van de smalle weg. De hemel, het nieuwe paradijs, de rechterbovenkant van het schilderij. Alle elementen van het liedje zitten in deze hemel. Je ziet een gat (crack) in de wolken, het is er altijd vrolijk (where happiness reigned all year round) en de engelen spelen op bazuinen (music played ever so loudly).

En altijd als ik het schilderij zag vroeg ik mij af. Is het allemaal wel echt en waar?

En daarom eindigt ieder couplet van Traffic met dat wat we allemaal met zekerheid weten.
De onvolmaaktheid van de echte wereld waarin we leven. En dan moet je helemaal beneden zijn, symbo-lisch gevat als het gat in de schoen dat water in laat. En om die imperfectie te benadrukken herhalen we het nog eens, letting in water!
En sinds deze ervaring ben ik bekeerd tot Traffic!

Een paar binnenkomers die ik volgens mij nog niet bij anderen zag:

The Shirelles met hun laatste top 100 hit (plaats 99 werd behaald) in de Billboard Hot 100. Hun laatste echt grote hit dateert uit 1963 en ook dit nummer had net zo goed uit dit jaar kunnen zijn. Maar ik mag die typische girl group sound wel en het is gewoon een goed liedje.

The Ohio Express met een ripoff van Louie, Louie, las ik ergens. Zit zeker iets in, maar toch vind ik het een erg aanstekelijk nummer, mede door het zuidelijke accent van de zanger. In de verte hoor ik wel een beetje texmex.

Hoogste binnenkomer Gene Pitney wordt door de wat jongere oudere herkend als het origineel van wat in 1988 in de versie van Marc Almond een hit is geworden. Ik ken het nummer sinds 1986, vanwege de cover door een van mijn favoriete artiesten Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. In 1987 heb ik op bezoek bij mijn 20 jaar oudere oom en tante voor het eerst de versie van Gene Pitney gehoord.
Maar is het werkelijk het origineel? Volgens Arnold Rypens in het boekje The Originals (eerste druk) wel. Volgens de wiki is het origineel van David & Jonathan

Deze week zijn alle ogen natuurlijk gericht op 'I Can See for Miles' van The Who. Een paradepaardje 'pur sang', hoewel het niet eens hele hoge noteringen in de hitlijsten haalde.
The Creation doet het een tikkie beter dan de overige binnenkomers. Ondergewaardeerd bandje destijds.
Met 'Love and Beauty' voorganger van 'Nights in White Satin' doen The Moody Blues met de nieuwe line-up met John Lodge en Justin Hayward voorzichtige stapjes naar een ander geluid.
Slim Harpo en blues in het algemeen is een beetje ondervertegenwoordigd in onze lijsten. Dat er in het bijgaande filmpje en passant een aantal sexy dames in beeld worden gebracht maakt de muziek alleen maar aantrekkelijker, toch?
The Shoes - Farewell in the Rain ken ik beter in de uitvoering 'Tank Esso Mix' het gratis singletje die ik kreeg toen ik mijn Puch bij de Esso tankte. Ik hoor ze nog in plat Haags roepen 'Tank dag en nacht Esso Mix, helemaal het einde'.


Op 26 september 2011 plaatste ik mijn eerste lijstje in de topic 1967 (nu 1973) - Tipparade-, singles- en eigen lijsten/besprekingen. Het moment is nu gekomen om er mee te stoppen.
De cirkel is rond. Hoewel er nog genoeg te ontdekken is zal ik grotendeels in herhaling treden als ik door zou gaan. Ik heb 6 jaar lang met veel plezier lijstjes gemaakt.
Wat heeft het mij opgeleverd? Nou, in ieder geval veel voldoening dankzij onvoorstelbaar veel goede muziek die ik nog niet kende. Ik heb ruim 1800 nummers op een USB-stick staan die aan mijn hoge
eisen voldoen. Een schatkist. Daarnaast heb ik veel info over liedjes en artiesten opgeslagen. Met deze voorraad kan ik nog jarenlang mijn radioprogramma bij de lokale omroep vullen.

Beste mede users. Bedankt voor jullie lijstjes, ontdekkingen en andere bijdragen. Het was me een waar genoegen. Zonder jullie had dit 90 pagina's tellende naslagwerk niet tot stand gebracht kunnen worden. Ik wens jullie nog veel plezier de komende jaren en natuurlijk blijf ik jullie volgen.

Jammer dat je stopt, we zullen je lijstjes zeer zeker gaan missen!

Zeker jammer, al had je het al eerder aangekondigd. Zeer veel dank voor het opstarten van dit topic destijds en alle berichten. Het heeft mij ook weer aan een schatkist geholpen.

Van alle argumenten om met een topic te stoppen is dit uiteraard de beste.
heicro zou nog kunnen overwegen om weer in 1971 in te stappen. Dan wordt het cirkeltje wat groter en dat is ook nog een behoorlijk sterk jaar. Maar daar zijn we voorlopig nog niet.

Bedankt heicro voor al jouw bijdragen. Het was opvallend hoe vaak mijn top 3 met de jouwe samenviel maar ook de rest van jouw top 40 was voor mij altijd de blauwdruk voor de mijne. Ook deze week hebben we (weer) dezelfde nr. 1. Ik vermoed daarom dat ik jou de komende jaren vanuit het oudere topic 1967-1970 (nu 1973) nog aardig aan het plagiëren ben.

Maar gelukkig heb ik ook gezien dat het oude topic nog heel veel pareltjes gemist heeft, al dan niet bewust. Dus wellicht kunnen we jouw schatkistje verder vullen en nog boven de magische grens van 2000 nummers krijgen.
Dus als je ons blijft volgen dan is het geen afscheid hier, en wens ik jou ook nog veel plezier de komende jaren.

Het is altijd leuk om even in het 1973-topic te spieken. Over mijn hoogste binnenkomer, Lightning' s Girl, is LucM niet te spreken.

Het liedje heeft, toegegeven, de melodie van een kinderliedje en er zit een raar semi-psychedelisch tussenstukje in dat op het eind nog een keer herhaald wordt. Desondanks vind ik het een leuk liedje. Ik heb een compilatie waar het op staat en het haalde in het Greatest Hits-topic, dat nu gespeeld wordt, de startlijst. Daar verbaas ik me dan wel weer over. Ik denk niet dat het de eliminatieronde zal overleven.

Rustig weekje hier, al gaan The Zombies hard omhoog.

Hoogste nieuwe is van The Who, een band die ik nooit helemaal voel op de een of andere manier. Maar I Can See For Miles is een prima nummer.

The Frog is niet zo bekend, maar de sound wel... fijne bossa van Sergio Mendes. Dit swingt als de neten.

Verder nog soulplaat van Gene Chandler. Mooi liedje, mooie stem en ook fijne percussie.

Nancy Sinatra's Lightning Girl is een stevige plaat voor haar doen: het refrein had zo uit de jaren '50 kunnen komen, maar verder voelt het als een soort gitaarduel in het wilde westen met een stevige drum en lawaaierige riff en een intrigerend middenstuk vol strijkers. Ik begrijp niet zo goed dat dit in de flop 10 van LucM staat; bij een site als RYM staat dit ook gewoon bij beste 300 singles van 1967.

OK, laten we hier eens uitgebreid naar kijken.

Ik lees aan het begin in 1967 nog veel besprekingen van nummers. Men is enthousiast daarmee begonnen. En dat is uiteraard heel erg leuk!

Het is wel jammer dat er soms geen clip bij gevonden is en men het er daarna bij laat zitten, ik snap ook vaak de argumentatie niet die men aandraagt, of het klopt feitelijk niet, of ik ben het er niet mee eens.

Wat het eerste (geen clip gevonden) betreft, ik pak er een aantal uit de eerste 3 kwartalen.

... dit zorgt wellicht voor een ander (lager) cijfer voor 1967 en zo valt Nancy misschien uit de flop 10.

Wat het tweede (ik snap de argumentatie vaak niet) betreft, bijvoorbeeld.
Welk Temptations-liedje wordt er bedoeld? Bedoelen ze het nummer Running Away (Ain't Gonna Help You)?
Maar dat is van later (1969), het is van schrijversduo Whitfield en Strong en bovendien een heel ander nummer. Bij the Four tops gaat het om het schrijverstrio Holland, Dozier, Holland.

Wat het derde (het klopt feitelijk niet) betreft, bijvoorbeeld.
Klopt niet. Nummer is oorspronkelijk Italiaans.
Komt uit juni 1967: Riccardo Del Turco met "Uno Tranquillo". Die van Ben Cramer is van oktober 1967 en die van the Tremeloes uit januari 1968.
Ik ben trouwens geen tegenstander van het omvormen van Italiaanse schlagers naar Engelstalige hits.

Wat het vierde (ik ben het er niet mee eens) betreft, bijvoorbeeld.
Ik vind dit geen overtuigende recensie van LucM. Luc probeert in twee onliners een nummer neer te sabelen en dat is eigenlijk onmogelijk. Laat ik de drie elementen nemen die Luc voor zijn motivatie lijkt aan te dragen.
