25: Suede met een fijne glamstamper. Voor mij een van hun laatste leuke singles, zo niet de laatste, al is het niveau van de eerste 2 albums hier al even uit zicht.
26: Leftfield verlaat de lijst met Afrika Shox, maar hier is de opvolger Dusted. Trager, dieper en met fijne raps van Roots Manuva.
28: Wheat heb ik hier geloof ik nog niet voorbij zien komen. Beetje sombere mijmerrock, maar wel erg mooi gedaan.
32: Lightning Seeds heeft voor hoe sympathiek ik ze vind eigenlijk maar weinig mijn top 20 gehaald. Na Sense uit '92 lukte dat alleen nog met de voetbalkraker Three Lions. Maar wie weet wat er nu nog in het vat zit, want deze britpopdance is hun beste single in jaren.
34: dEUS scoorde 2 dikke hits met Instant Street en Sister Dew dit jaar, maar ik kan me niet voorstellen dat het titelnummer van hun album zulke hoge ogen gaat gooien. Goed nummer, maar wel 1 van de 2 mindere op het album wat mij betreft.
36: Blur's slotsingle van de 90's vind ik een verrassende keuze. Echt een typische albumafsluiter, niet echt een logische singlekeuze. Wel een mooi nummer, daar niet van.
37: Cousteau zag ik in december '99 in de grote zaal van Paradiso, op het London Calling festival. Dat festival zat toen duidelijk in een dip, want de grote zaal was amper gevuld voor deze Londense band met Ierse zanger. Eigenlijk was er zelfs maar 1 bezoeker die vooraan stond, een wat oudere man die met een glas wijn duidelijk stond te genieten. Ik vond het wat saai zelf, maar een paar jaar terug ontdekte ik alsnog Last Good Day of the Year, een ontzettend fraaie single. Wel een aanrader voor de liefhebbers van croonerbritpop.

Zou er eind 1999 al iemand zijn geweest die op zijn zolderkamertje bezig was met het maken van onze musicmeter site? Zoiets duurt natuurlijk even.
Hard nodig, zat ik mij te bedenken.

Van de hitlijsten, ook de internationale, moesten we het in 1999 niet meer hebben. Wat een goedkope troep. Uit al die honderden nummers zou ik er geen 30 meer uit kunnen halen. Aan de andere kant: waar moest je namen als Ooberman, Beulah en de Pillows vandaan halen. Dat vergde in die tijd een hele aparte zoektocht om daar achter te komen. Ik heb ze toen ook lang niet allemaal gevonden, dat doe ik nu voor een deel in dit topic.
Porcupine Tree was natuurlijk iets meer bekend.

In die zin waren het internet en nieuwe sites een zegen.
Wel opletten dat je met je computer inmiddels "klaar bent" voor de overgang naar het jaar 2000. Zorg voor een goede backup, mocht alles inderdaad uitvallen bij de overgang naar het nieuwe millennium!

Na twee weken lijsten zonder commentaar, nu weer mijn persoonlijke meningen over de noteringen.

Met een nieuwe nummer 1: Learn to fly van de Foo Fighters. Hun eerste nummer 1, maar ook hun laatste, ook al zouden ze nog 5 keer op nummer 2 uitkomen.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor The Flaming Lips. Waitin' for a Superman is zeker geen Race for the prize, het heeft weinig tempo, het valt niet erg op en de zanger zingt nog wat minder zuiver dan gewoonlijk, maar in de slipstream van die geweldige voorganger kon dit toch nog een een radiohit worden, en bij mij een aardige notering.

De tweede binnenkomer is voor Supergrass, inmiddels ook een vaak geziene gast. Mary klinkt redelijk conventioneel in het Supergrass-geluid; de verrassing zit voor mij nu vooral in de griezelige clip (misschien bedoeld voor Halloween?). Dat het hun derde nummer 1 bij mij gaat worden, zou ik nu niet meer kunnen verklaren.

Suede hebben we ook al vaker gezien. Met Can't get enough gaan ze stevig tekeer, de glamrock is niet ver weg. Het refrein is wat simpel, wat zowel een voordeel is als een nadeel. Een klassieker is het niet geworden.

En ja, Blur is ook al een icoon van de nineties. De band komt binnen met No distance left to run, een rustige beheerste song, drijvend op een eenvoudige gitaaraanslag en de contemplatieve teksten van Damon Albarn. De clip van 5 en een halve minuut blijkt voor bijna de helft uit interviewtjes te bestaan.

week 48 voor 1999; zo tegen het eind van het jaar komen er nog wat echt goede singles bij, daar was ik ook wel aan toe. Ik had niet door dat Lene al in 1999 in de tipprade kwam, dacht dat het in nederland pas in 2000 begin. Maar nu dus al binnen, daarentegen de beste van de Corrs komt wel pas volgend jaar in NL maar nu al in de engelse charts, waar ik ook deze van de Dust Brothers vond afkomstig van de Fight Club soundtrack. Is er ook een instrumentale versie? Dat zou in dit geval wel beter zijn

Over Supergrass en HIM kan ik hier niemand wat nieuws vertellen denk ik. Mary is voor mij de laatste Supergrass-single die echt indruk maakte met de enge video. HIM's Join Me voelt heel fout, maar is wel een nummer dat me gelijk meeneemt naar 'toen' en de afgelopen weken heeft bewezen nog een behoorlijke hoge replay value te hebben.

Minder bekend zijn Bows (stevige triphop), Piano Magic (rustige postrock) en Touch and Go (downtempo). Touch and Go scoorde een behoorlijke hit met Would You?, maar dit nummer is compleet andere koek en sfeervolle rustige elektronica richting lounge/downtempo. De single was me eerder dit jaar ontgaan, maar ik vind hem goed genoeg om hem alsnog binnen te laten komen.

Er zit echt zo'n geweldige vibe in de nieuwe single van Joe Cocker, dat kun je gewoon niet langs je heen laten glijden. Ik geef toe, een oudere man misschien, ook al in 1999, maar Cocker is net als wijn (een beetje een dure): hoe ouder hoe beter met de jaren.

En ook lekker stevig. Geld ook voor Him en Kashmir. Filter is voor mij een nieuwe band maar zeker niet onaardig. De Red Hot Chili Peppers hebben een mooie nieuwe kraker van Californication en als het naar Kerst c.q. de wintermaanden toegaat kan Jethro Tull natuurlijk niet worden overgeslagen.

Op 20 de hoogste nieuwe, van Kane. Ik weet dat die band niet bij iedereen hier even goed ligt, maar in de begintijd maakten ze enkele sterke singles, en Damn those eyes is zonder twijfel de beste. Hier wordt ouderwets goed een powerballad opgebouwd naar een hoogtepunt dat weinigen kunnen bereiken, en Dinand Woesthoff haalt dit vocaal gemakkelijk. Hopelijk ben ik toch niet de enige die er zo over denkt.

Ook hoog nieuw op 21 Blackalicious, een Amerikaanse hiphopduo met een single van hun debuutalbum. In mijn schrift heet dit Don't let money change you, maar het blijkt officieel Deception te heten. De teksten komen vloeiend en intelligent op mij over, de muziek is ook wat meer soulful dan gebruikelijk in de hiphop. Ondanks een aanstekelijk verbaal riedeltje werd dit in NL geen succes.

Op 30 komt in mijn schrift binnen: Soulwax met The lemon crush. Alleen lijkt dat nummer niet te bestaan. Ik kan niets van Soulwax vinden dat met een lemon crush gelinkt kan worden. Wel vind ik een Nederlandse band Lemon Crush die in 1999 met een stevig gitaaralbum, zonder veel succes. Hoe ik dan bij Soulwax ben gekomen, weet ik niet, en ook niet welke song het dan zou zijn. Toch wordt dit bij mij een redelijke top 20 hit, alsof ik het wel vaker gehoord heb op de radio. Als iemand hier wat aan kan toevoegen: graag!

Over Run to the water van Live kan geen misverstand bestaan: het is het typische Live-geluid, opbouwende coupletten en stevige refreinen, met veel metaforen in de lyrics. In de top 40 werd het een bescheiden hit, maar als ik me niet vergis, werd deze song in sommige Aller Tijden-lijstjes een groot succes (Radio 3?), en dat verbaasde mij wel, dit is toch niet hun beste song.

week 49 voor 1999 waarin Fiona op 1 blijft maar Lene op weg lijkt dat te gaan overnemen; 4 binnenkomers waarvan slechts 1 met clip.
