Weeping Willows' Broken Promise Land is al uit 1997 en stond toen ook wel bij mij op de radar, maar het nummer liep toen net de lijst mis. Eigenlijk werd het toen alleen opgepikt door 50tracks. Inmiddels komt het nummer bijna binnen in de tipparade en is het nummer opnieuw op de radar en eigenlijk haalt ie nu wel moeiteloos de lijst. Schitterende croonerpop uit Stockholm, goed vergelijkbaar met Cousteau en prachtige muziek ook voor in de decembermaand.

Carl Cox' Phuture2000 is ook al even uit, want staat al maanden in mijn YouTube-tiplijst die ik soms wat uit het oog verlies, omdat YouTube niet echt in mijn systeem zit. Goede stevige houseplaat in ieder geval. Hopelijk komt 'ie nog eens op Spotify.

Van dezelfde playlist trouwens de trancy techno van Stardiver, dit jaar uitgebracht door het Kreisel-label (een spin-off van Kompakt), die elke week een goede 12" uitbrachten in 1999. Ik zie nu dat het nummer eigenlijk al uit 1991 is, maar omdat het ook dit jaar uitkwam laat ik hem toch maar staan.

Noordkaap heb ik meestal niet zoveel mee, maar dit Pretentious Moi bevalt mij wel. Beetje rechttoe rechtaan rocksong, maar zeker goed gedaan en de tekst - gepassioneerd gezongen - beklijft.

Het speciale dat de Smashing Pumpkins in de eerste helft van de 90s hadden is er inmiddels wel vanaf, maar The Everlasting Gaze is toch wel een uitstekende rockplaat. Destijds eigenlijk hun laatste single die ik heel veel gedraaid heb, na Machina ben ik vrij snel afgehaakt.

Le Tigre is een band van Kathleen Hannah, die aardig wat aanzien geniet in LHBTIQ+-kringen. Bij een recent concert van Sprints in Paradiso sprong er nog iemand met KH-shirt op het podium. Ik ken er eigenlijk niet heel veel van, maar wat ik ken is zeker leuk en over een paar jaar komt er een hele dikke classic van ze op ons af.

Azzido Da Bass' Dooms Night hoorde ik laatst weer eens in de Kuip, tijdens een Champions League-avond. Heerlijke plaat om op hoog volume te horen nog altijd. Goede beat, vette synths. Een van de betere commerciele danceplaten uit dit tijdsgewricht.

Excuses, het wordt zelfs vrijdag.

Het lijkt wel dringen aan het einde van het millennium met betrekking tot afscheid. We hebben al Genesis voor het laatst in de lijst. Dat gaat ook gebeuren met Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Ophouden deden ze niet, er verscheen alleen van het viertal als kwartet geen nieuw plaatwerk meer. Live wilde nog wel lukken.

Maar waar het oude verdwijnt, komen er ook altijd weer jonge frisse groene blaadjes, zoals de dit jaar pas opgerichte indie-band My Vitriol.
R.E.M. schreef een nummer voor de film Man on the moon, Matthew Smit is eindelijk weer terug met nieuw werk. De meest luidruchtige terugkeer is die van de Smashin' Pumpkins. Maar daar staat vermoedelijk niemand van te kijken.

Het lijkt wel dringen aan het einde van het millennium met betrekking tot afscheid. We hebben al Genesis voor het laatst in de lijst. Dat gaat ook gebeuren met Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Ophouden deden ze niet, er verscheen alleen van het viertal als kwartet geen nieuw plaatwerk meer. Live wilde nog wel lukken.

Maar waar het oude verdwijnt, komen er ook altijd weer jonge frisse groene blaadjes, zoals de dit jaar pas opgerichte indie-band My Vitriol.
R.E.M. schreef een nummer voor de film Man on the moon, Matthew Smit is eindelijk weer terug met nieuw werk. De meest luidruchtige terugkeer is die van de Smashin' Pumpkins. Maar daar staat vermoedelijk niemand van te kijken.

Nu we de Kerst naderen, stokt de aanvoer van nieuwe songs steeds meer, met het gevolg dat aan de uitgang een soort opstopping ontstaat van oude platen die er nog niet uit kunnen. Het gemiddeld aantal weken in deze lijst zal erg hoog zijn.

Drie binnenkomers dus slechts. Macy Gray debuteert op 24 met I try. Macy heeft een zeer herkenbare, rasperige stem, maar haar songs zijn redelijk mainstream. Ik dacht dat I try haar doorbraakhit was, maar hiervoor haalde ze al de top 40 met Do something. Nog opvallender: Macy heeft vier keer de top 40 gehaald, maar is nooit hoger dan 35 gekomen... I try luistert lekker weg (als je die stem goed kan hebben), het refrein blijft goed hangen.

Korn herhaalt op 29 nog weer eens het kunstje waar ze goed in zijn: opgekropte woede, stevige muziek en ook een verontrustende clip. Aangezien ze zich niet verder ontwikkelden, zou het succes in hun carrière ook niet erg lang duren.

Stephen Simmonds is een Zweedse zanger, in Nederland een one-hit-wonder, dankzij dit fraaie Tears never dry. Het is droevig klinkende redelijk traditionele ballad, met violen en al. In Nederland kwam hij tot de 20e plaats.

week 50 voor 1999 waarin de top 2 blijft staan; die zullen in de laatste week van het jaar wel elkaars grootste concurrent blijven ondanks de stijgers op 3 en 6 en hoge binnenkomer.
Die binnenkomer, dat was wel wat destijds. John Peel was er schijnaar gek van, maar hoe ik het ontdekte weet ik niet meer. Ik weet wel dat ik de (cd)single destijds heb gekocht. Een echte oorwurm.
Verder dé ontdekking voor mij van de lijsten van 1998 en 99, de poolse Edyta Bartosiewicz (ondanks dat ze maar 2x nipt de top 10 haalde). Matthew Sweet met een single die overal als promo staat maar wel met een radio-edit er op dus blijkbaar was het wel de bedoeling in de charts te komen, meer via airplay dan verkoop weliswaar. Idem voor de Pumpkins maar daar is zelfs een clip van.

Na King of my castle mag You're the reason opnieuw (als ik de discografie van Wamdue Project goed heb gezien). Je kan 2 kanten op: een girlie versie die King opnieuw wil nadoen of de originele (die van de manga video) die een zompige bas heeft en waar minder prominent zang aanwezig is.
Underworld laat een wat onbeduidender nummer van Beaucoup fish gelukkig aan wat remixers over, DJ Hype zet Karl Hyde en co in een koudwaterbad waar zij springend en jackend uithollen op een op hol geslagen ratelende groove.
Live en Jamiroquai zijn voor het gezapigere publiek en waarschijnlijk kort in de coulissen tussen 30 en 40.

Aimée Mann's prachtige Save Me komt van de soundtrack van Magnolia (en ook haar volgend jaar te verschijnen 3e album), een film die ik destijds helemaal geweldig vond. Dik 3 uur duurt ie, maar toen 'ie was afgelopen wilde ik hem meteen nog een keer gezien. Helaas zaten we al in de late avondvoorstelling destijds... Overigens al een hele tijd geleden dat Aimée mijn lijst haalde, maar haar laatste album dateert ook alweer uit 1995. In de tussentijd heeft ze vooral liedjes voor films gecoverd/geschreven zie ik. En ze was onderdeel van de scene rondom de Largo club van Jon Brion, net als Magnolia-regisseur Paul Thomas Anderson en Eels.

Placebo's Burger Queen werd ook in het Frans opgenomen. Schitterend nummer, maar sowieso blinken ze uit in ballads. Jammer dat het niet op Spotify staat. En volgens mij heb ik deze ook niet fysiek in de collectie.

Nine Inch Nails' Into the Void is een opbouwtrack die eigenlijk beter fungeert als bouwsteen op het album dan als losse single. Maar ja, NIN-singles zijn schaars dus ik neem hem graag op.

Aim's Sail is een leuke downtempo track, maar pas echt goed wordt het in de bewerking van Rae & Christian, die het nog een stuk meer sfeer geven.

Een mooie overwinning van de Cranberries, eerlijk verdiend. Niet alleen dat, het is voor het eerst in tijden dat een nummer in mijn lijst weer eens de 200-punten grens heeft overschreden.

Ondanks (of dankzij?) de rustige kersttijd wordt mijn hele top 10 opgeschud, met Mary van Supergrass als onverwachte winnaar, en hebben we ook nog eens 6 binnenkomers. Maar dat laatste was nu eenmaal hard nodig, en als we ze goed bekijken, zitten er wat bij elkaar geschraapte nummers bij...

De hoogste nieuwe op 29 is voor het Amerikaanse houseduo Masters at Work, met vocalen van India. To be in love lijkt mij meer disco dan house, maar het is kennelijk een dunne scheidslijn. Erg vlot nummer dat wel een grotere hit had kunnen worden (blijft in de NL tipparade steken).

Op 32 de kennismaking met het nog altijd actieve Muse, het nummer Muscle museum. Destijds waren ze nog inventief en interessant, met een hoofdrol voor pianotoetsen (al zullen die ook wel uit een synthesizer komen). Ik was wel vergeten dat ook op deze eerste hit al de galmende zang van Matt Bellamy luid klonk.

Op 33 komt Wheat binnen met hun enige entry, Don't I hold you. Deze Amerikaanse indieband was al een aantal albums actief, maar alleen deze song heeft mij bereikt. Het is wel direct een erg goeie track, met onderkoelde sfeer en toch stevige drive en prima vocalen. Jammer dat het hierbij zou blijven.

En dan, op een rijtje, drie Nederlandstalige binnenkomers die allemaal niet uit de gebruikelijk rockhoek komen, maar meer commercieel Nederlandstalige pop. Op 36 staat Henk Westbroek, die natuurlijk wel uit een rockband afkomstig is, maar die stijl had hij allang achter zich gelaten. De hemel is een behoorlijk pompeuze ballad, rijk georkestreerd, niet helemaal zuiver gezongen, en de tekst is mij ook niet helemaal duidelijk ('De hemel is van ons'), maar zo aan het eind van het jaar kun je er toch mijn top 40 mee halen (overigens niet eens de NL tipparade).

Op 37 staat Marco Borsato met Binnen, dat ook wel vrij stevig is, met rockinvloeden. Het komt sterk over en werd ook een nummer 1-hit. Achteraf wel een van zijn leukste songs.

En op 38 komt zelfs Leef binnen van Han van Eijk (geen enkel verband met het latere Leef van André Hazes Jr). Dit werd een grote hit (nummer 2) doordat het de titelsong was van het succesprogramma Big Brother. Het is verder vrij standaard, en ook de enige hit van deze Utrechtse zanger.

Volgende week volgt er uiteraard nog een top 40.

week 51, mijn laatste van 1999 en ook de laatste in dit topic, geen behoefte meer aan 2000 voor mij. Lene Marlin scoort haar 2e nummer 1 van dit jaar, beide maar 1 week. Nog 3 binnenkomers bij elkaar kunnen schrapen, voor een klein beetje opruiming, waaronder een verstopt kerstnummer. Tenminste ik herkende de titel niet als zodanig.
Volgende week nog wel m'n jaaroverzicht.
