44. Laughing (Johan 20, Luigi 93)



Weer een hele mooie albumtrack van Murmur, een album dat jarenlang mijn R.E.M.-favoriet was. Ik zie nu dat ik drie songs van dat album in de top-20 heb gezet en nog twee daar net buiten, waarmee het eigenlijk het best scoort van allemaal. Maar goed, het album heeft 12 songs, net als mijn favoriete R.E.M.-album, dus wat het gemiddelde is...
Laughing dus, het klinkt zo effortless, zo organisch, alsof ze het in hun droom gecomponeerd hebben. I will try to sing a happy song zong Michael jaren later in The Wrong Child. Nou, daar had hij er al genoeg van gezongen. Dit nummer, samen met Shaking Through, vind ik het 'gelukkigst' klinken op Murmur, hoewel er ook zeker een onderstroom van melancholie in zit, een gevoel dat verder op de plaat ook wel overheerst. 'Light hearted tune' zou je ook van het refrein kunnen maken

43. Sitting Still (Johan 38, Luigi 68)



En nog maar eentje van Murmur! Sitting Still is ook een juweeltje, en zeker het refrein, waste of time time, sitting still geeft de mood van het hele album goed weer. Het album heeft een hele carefree en laidback atmosfeer, van de Catapult, tot aan Laughing, Shaking Through, tot aan de lome wandelingen van We Walk en Pilgrimage... Het nummer is muzikaal wel wat puntiger, en had ook zo op Chronic Town kunnen staan.
En Sitting Still is misschien wel het liedje met de meest misheard lyrics in de R.E.M.-canon. Michael Stipe omschreef de tekst eens als 'just a collection of vowels that make no sense' en hij paste de misheard lyrics als 'we could gather, throw up beer' ook vaak toe als het nummer live werd gespeeld

Geweldig nummer. Ik ben er trouwens vrij zeker van dat de openingsregel is: 'This name I got, we all agree...' Maar ja, who knows?

Mandoline, bas, orgel, intense Michael ---> Hairshirt....zalig! Misschien wel het mooiste nummer tot nog toe van deze lijst . Albumtrack van Green, gaf mij later pas zijn geheimen prijs, was in het begin een van de "andere" tracks naast de nummers van kaliber Orange Crush.
Maar wat is dit een mooi nummer zeg, verstild, liefdevol, prachtige lyrics, maar het is vooral de mandoline en Michael's stem die de show stelen hier. Echt een prijsnummer en een van de hoogtepunten van het album voor mij, het ebt ook heerlijk na en weg en sleept je er helemaal in mee. Ik vind het ook passen na een lange nazomerse dag, een nagenietnummer dus, ook al is het geen albumcloser . Het nummer werd niet veel live gespeeld, het had vast een hoogtepunt geweest in de set, iedereen zou vast muisstil zijn geweest en aan de lippen hebben gehangen van Michael, of de snaren van Peter .

When Peter Buck strums his mandolin in “Hairshirt,” every note is so bright that the track seems as though it is being bathed in pure white light. The instrument thoroughly dominates the song — there is no percussion, and a subtle bass line and organ drone blend in so well that they are only noticeable upon close listening. Buck’s part is gorgeous and open-ended, and floats along with a gentle, mellow grace that isn’t quite like anything else that I’ve ever heard aside from perhaps “You Are The Everything,” which obviously came from the same recording sessions.

Michael Stipe’s vocal part benefits greatly from having been improvised in the studio. For one thing, it complements the loose, relaxed tone of the piece, which in turn provides a nice touch of contrast on the record as it falls between two of the most tightlycomposed tracks in the band’s discography. The approach also adds to the sense of intimacy in the recording, and the chorus-free structure allows Stipe plenty of space to emote. It’s one of his most soulful performances, and not just in terms of affectation. He seems genuinely overwhelmed by his feelings throughout the song, and when he likens entering a crowded room to being dropped into the middle of the ocean, it comes across like a genuinely heartfelt confession rather than just another set of lyrics.

Weekendje niet gevolgd, sneuvelt er alweer een absoluut topnummer: 'Let Me In' vanop Monster. Zoals jullie ook schrijven: het absolute topnummer van Monster, scheurend en schurend.

41. Harborcoat (Johan 48, Luigi 55)



De opener van Reckoning en het op een na hoogst genoteerde nummer van die plaat. Reckoning scoort daarmee het slechtst van de jaren 80-albums en dat is niet zo verrassend vind ik, want hoewel het 10 hele puike songs zijn, is het veel minder een eenheid dan de andere R.E.M.-albums uit die jaren. Harborcoat vind ik het meest The Smiths-achtige liedje uit hun discografie. De riff van Peter waar het nummer mee start en die we in het refrein horen had zo van Johnny Marr kunnen zijn. The Smiths die overigens pas debuteerden, op albumniveau, in het jaar dat Reckoning uitkwam. Mooi drumwerk ook van Bill Berry op dit nummer, en ook een leuke vondst om Mike Mills een geheel eigen tekst te laten zingen naast die van Michael, een trucje dat ze later een aantal keer herhaalden. De tekst gaat over het Rusland van vlak na de Russische Revolutie, hoewel Stipe het later ook eens een herschrijving van het Dagboek van Anne Frank genoemd heeft. Hoe dan ook een intrigerend nummer met een intrigerende tekst. There's a splinter in your eye and it reads R-E-A-C-T

40. Leaving New York (Luigi 47, Johan 55)




Het laatste en tevens mooiste nummer van Around The Sun dat voorbij komt. Tevens de leadsingle van het album, het haalde de 5e plaats in de UK singleslijst! Ik kan me zo voorstellen dat je in 2004 het album luisterde bij het uitkomen en dacht van: Wow mooi nummer zeg, en Electron Blue is ook al zo mooi, wat een start van een album! En daar blijft het dan bij, it's all downhill from there, met een paar meer dan aardige nummers ertussen hoor dat wel, maar ook met gedrochten als High Speed Train en The Ascent Of Man, die het vanzelfsprekend niet gehaald hebben. Maar dit is dus een mooi nummer met een mooie melodie en mooie gelaten zang van Michael, vooral tegen het einde aan wanneer het refrein maar doorgaat en op de achtergrond it's pulling me apart....change blijft klinken, dat is wat de song extra sterk maakt en een mooi heimweevol gevoel meegeeft en dus ook terecht op deze positie staat wat mij betreft..een mooie aftrap van de top 40

Over het nummer:

As Stipe stated in interviews, the tune is a love song to the city. Stipe regards New York as his second hometown. Stipe stated that once, flying out of the city and seeing it from above, he was overwhelmed by its beauty and wrote the song right there on the plane.[1]

The music video was shot with real friends of the band members, throwing a party, and snapshots of Stipe in different places of the city, giving the video a spontaneous and private atmosphere.

Reckoning is juist één van mijnfavoriete R.E.M. albums. Dat riffje in Harbourcoat is ook echt geweldig.



Zat in mijn last.fm lijst te kijken en alleen al op mijn telefoon via spotify de laatste paar maanden ruim 800 keer beluisterd. Staan nu dik in mijn top 10. De bonus live cd's bij Murmur, Reckoning en Document zijn ook echt tof.

Leaving NY is prachtig, ik dacht dat ik daar alleen in stond maar blijklaar niet

In geen jaren meer naar geluisterd, Around the Sun. Enige R.E.M. album dat ik op een onvoldoende heb staan (2,5*), misschien binnenkort weer eens in de herkansing doen.

Ha, wat een schitterende beschrijving, en klopt volledig. Leaving New York was een mooie single, en beloofde veel goeds na 'Reveal' wat ik echt zwak vond/vind. Het album met hoge verwachtingen beginnen draaien, na Leaving New York het hemelse Electron Blue (vind ik een super nummer) maar daarna zakt het echt geweldig terug in. Echte teleurstelling dus, die eerste luisterervaringen. Nadien heb ik Final Straw beter leren waarderen na een live-concert, en de afsluitende titeltrack Around The Sun vind ik ook nog OK.

We duiken dus de top 40 in, spannend, en het is ook al lang geleden dat Chance (dub) nog eens vermeld werd, de stilte voor de storm? Of het langzaam uitdoven van de kaars...

Blijkbaar heb ik soms een kronkel in mijn muzieksmaak. Vanaf het eerste moment dat ik Around The Sun hoorde, was ik aangenaam verrast. Voor zit hij in dezelfde categorie als Out of Time en Automatic for The People. Mooie middenmoot.

Ja, ja. Fables en Pageant zijn buitencategorie, net als Green. Daaronder Murmur en Reckoning. Dan de rest.

Ook altijd moeilijk... volgorde van de albums.
