Okee ik heb een album uit gekozen, heb jammer genoeg weinig tijd om er een leuk Introductie bericht bij te zetten. Behalve deze plaat rockt!
Fairy tales are unified teleological structures based on static narrative models. The same is true for most jazz styles. The music of alto saxophonist Tim Berne works according to a different set of rules, tells a different kind of stories, His compositions are Fractured Fairy Tales. For Berne, the conventions of jazz are no longer the binding foundation, He knows them and respects their validity, but he goes one step beyond, declines their security and comfort, without, however, disregarding them completely; he juggles handed-down forms and elements of style playfully. Musical form to Tim Berne is more than a servile frame. Instead, he shifts it into the foreground. "There's that whole tradition of bebop and jazz that plays the tune, and solos, and plays the tune. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's more a thing about virtuosity, not necessarily about composition. I'm not really a virtuose player- that's not what I'm about. I'm interested in organizing things, putting things together that are interesting to me. So all these little pieces are like parts of a story. I don't like to know it's going to end a certain way before it ends. I like having a surprise."
A concept like Tim Berne's poses a challenge: how to make structure and control compatible with improvisational freedom, how to realize both at the same time. It takes a set of particularly beneficial conditions to make a music happen that is as densely concentrated, dynamic, multi-layered and emotionally powerful as on Tim Berne's Fractured Fairy Tales. Music that is full of surprises, yet seems logical in its own particular way. For his first JMT album as a solo leader, Tim Berne has assembled long-time collaborators exclusively: his alter ego on trumpet, Herb Robertson; drummer Joey Baron, who continues his experiment with electronics begun as partner in the cooperative trio Miniature (with Tim Berne and Hank Roberts; see Miniature, JMT 919 022-2); innovative cellist and vocalist Hank Roberts; bassist Mark Dresser. All of them are members of Tim Berne's regular quintet that had the opportunity to work intensively on the new repertoire during an extended European tour in the spring of 1989. Following this tour, Tim Berne's Fractured Fairy Tales was recorded. Also featured on Tim Berne's Fractured Fairy Tales is violinist Mark Feldman. Feldman has been working with Tim Berne for a while now, and this first outing together documented on record. Feldman has also been performing in a trio with fellow-bandmembers on strings Dresser and Roberts, as can be heard on Arcado (JMT 919 028-2). Such an unorthodox combination of instruments corresponds directly with Tim Berne's compositional principles, and it opens up unthought-of possibilities of arrangement and sound. Instruments and groups of instruments may converge, collide, move apart, emerge as dominant voice, are submerged in the collective action.
Only a team as deeply familiar with each other as Tim Berne, Joey Baron, Mark Dresser, Mark Feldman, Hank Roberts, and Herb Robertson, is able to realize Berne's demanding compositions convincingly. "I'm sitting up a context for the soloist that will ensure a certain mood, but at the same time be free enough in that context to be themselves. It takes a lot of playing so people can get comfortable." Tim Berne's Fractured Fairy Tales unmistakably bears Tim Berne's compositional signature, and at the same time there is room for the specific talents and temperaments of each band member. Tim Berne: "The more I can control the moods of what I write, the closer I get to my vision of having the improvisational thing happening at the same time. I'm interested in the people I play and their individuality, but I don't want them to be the ones that shape my music completely, because it's my responsibility as a leader to come up with this vision. So it's not a question of playing a good solo - it's a question of playing a good solo and what the piece is supposed to be about. Heel blij met deze keuze! Groot fan van Tim Berne hier. Zware kost wel meestal... Heb nog niet kennisgemaakt met die Feldman dus ik ben benieuwd.

Een voor mij boeiend thema: de verhouding van vrije improvisatie tot compositie. Ik ga dus wel luisteren hoe Berne dat hier behandelt.

Een paar jaar geleden stond ik in de discotheek (het muziek-uitleengedeelte van de openbare bibliotheek 
) om nieuwe muziek te ontdekken. Door een misverstand werden mij een aantal jazz-cd's aangereikt, en ik vond het toch wel zo interessant dat ik een week later terugkwam en om meer vroeg. Ik ging toen naar huis met:
Ralph Towner - Solstice
Een van mijn eerste jazz-albums dus.
Hoewel het nooit echt een favoriet album van me is geworden, vond ik het aardig om deze als jazz-album van de week te kiezen (ook aangezien hij op MuMe nog niet zo ontzettend bekend is).
De vaste luisteraars krijgen een linkje.

't Is wel een geweldig album, mochten mensen onwillekeurig op deze pagina terechtkomen dan raad ik ze toch echt aan het album te beluisteren.

Heb ik al gedaan, maar net zoals bij veel albums uit de vorige ronde heb ik het gevoel dat ik me er meer moet in verdiepen, dus hou ik mijn commentaar voorlopig nog voor me. Het album van frank mulder is toegankelijker, vandaar dat ik sneller iets zal posten.
Maar hoe dan ook, in de verre toekomst mag Tim Berne zich aan mijn kritische oordeel verwachten!

Ik heb het momenteel ook erg druk. Zal het in Januari doen, dan heb ik wat meer tijd. Ook nog geen tijd gehad om Ralph Towner te beluisteren... En inderdaad best ineens volgende zondag nemen, hoop dat ik tegen dan bijgebeend ben.

Ik ga er even van uit dat Ik Doe Moeilijk deze tip tussendoor doet, en niemand er bezwaar tegen heeft dat ik het volgende JAvd Week plaats? Toen frankmulder me afgelopen zondag vroeg was het wat plotseling voor me. Omdat ook intussen nog niemand zich heeft aangediend (klaasdrukte wellicht net als voor mij?) wil ik alsnog wel het stokje overnemen.

Vandaag wat tijd over want wij vieren morgen pas Sinterklaas. Het is een beetje rustig in het topic, maar terugkijkend is dat elk jaar rond deze tijd. (we hebben het tweejarig jubileum weer geruisloos laten passeren ). Ikzelf ben ook druk met het beluisteren van CD´s buiten het topic, het is ook weer jaarlijstjes tijd en als hulpsint test ik ook graag muziekkado´s voordat ze in de zak gaan.
Ik zet deze vast neer voor morgen en de echt hongerigen die zich nu bedrogen voelen ( vorige week was er geen JAvdW) moeten Ik doe Moeilijk´s tip maar als JAvd vorige W beschouwen.
Als Jazzalbum vd week kies ik:
Możdżer Danielsson Fresco - The Time (2005)
Ik kwam dit trio tegen op youtube met een cover van Nirvana (nummer 8 van t album). Ik vond het zo´n goede versie dat ik het hele album ben gaan opzoeken.
Het is een vrij rustige pianoplaat en waar dat bij mij vaak wat moeizaam valt, blijft deze lekker luisterbaar door de prettige, functionele ritmesectie.
Pianist Możdżer bleek al op de MuMe voor te komen alsook Lars Danielsson. Deze overigens niet te verwarren met Palle Danielsson (beide uit Zweden en beide bassist) die we eerder zagen in het topic met deze.
Możdżer, Danielsson en Fresco dus, maar die stonden in deze bezetting nog niet op MuMe. Ik heb 3 albums op de site gezet.
Vaste deelnemers hebben een persoonlijke mail gehad.

Goeie keuze sq! Ik vind Możdżer een prima pianist, waarbij je kan horen dat hij net zo makkelijk Chopin zou kunnen spelen als een improvisatie. Vooral op de snelle tracks van de twee meest recente samenwerkings-albums van Danielsson (Tarantella!) komt dit goed tot z'n reecht!

Ik heb de eer het volgende jazz album v/d week te kiezen Ik hoop dat weer wat meer users actief gaan meedoen. Ruud, als liefhebber van de contrabas zou je hier ook eens naar moeten luisteren

Wederom kon ik het niet laten een album van één van mijn grote favorieten te kiezen: Mal Waldron. Volgens sommigen één van de allerbeste pianisten ooit, volgens anderen saai. Dit is een heerlijk intieme plaat opgenomen vlak voor Waldron's overlijden. Steve Lacy zou em twee jaar daarna achterna gaan. Het bevat een paar van Waldron's prachtige originals: All Alone, Seagulls of Kristiansand en het wereldberoemde Soul Eyes.
Ik zal bij het album binnenkort een recensie plaatsen. Upload is nu aan de gang, net als te toevoeging aan Mume. PM voor een link

Wil zelf wel een keer inhaken, maar heb nog twintig platen liggen op mijn rotatiestapel (en dat is alleen maar jazz), en doe er meestal wel meer dan een week over om een plaat een beetje te doorgronden. Die van Waldron leek me best interessant, maar had geen zin om dingen op mijn computer te gooien waar ik toch geen tijd voor had.

Ja. en de laatste dagen daarvoor heb ik nog behoorlijk lange werkdagen gemaakt. Tel daarop de eindejaarsborrels (meer dan me lief is) en je hebt gewoonweg maar weinig tijd om muziek te beluisteren (althans van de soort die je zelf bepaalt). Maar ook ik doe nog steeds mee!
