Is het goddelijk, is het duivels? McCullough werd wakker met de zinnen van het refrein (Fate up against your will. Through the thick and thin. He will wait until you give yourself to him) in zijn hoofd. Hij schreef voor een deel de tekst van het nummer dan ook toe aan God.
Maar... wellicht omdat de tekst verder ietwat is geïnspireerd door een kinderlijke fascinatie voor de ruimte, zijn de akkoorden van het nummer die van Space Oddity, maar dan van achter naar voren afgespeeld... Oei, daar moest je volgens mij altijd enorm mee oppassen.

Hebben de zeven stemmers wel door dat de versie uit 1984 nogal afwijkt van de hitversie uit 1985?

"West End Girls werd twee keer op single uitgebracht. De eerste versie van het nummer werd geproduceerd door Bobby Orlando en in 1984 uitgebracht op verschillende labels in verschillende landen. Het werd geen groot succes, enkele uitschieters daargelaten. Zo wist deze versie nummer 17 te bereiken in de BRT Top 30 in België.

Na een tweede geflopte single (One More Chance) en ruzie over contracten brak het duo met Bobby Orlando, en tekenden zij een contract bij Parlophone. Na een wederom niet erg succesvolle single (Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money), die eveneens twee keer uitgebracht zou worden) werd West End Girls eind 1985 nogmaals uitgebracht. Het nummer werd voor deze gelegenheid opnieuw opgenomen met producent Stephen Hague. Het tempo werd verlaagd, er werd tekst toegevoegd en de discobeats van Orlando werden vervangen door een totaal andere backing track. Het resultaat was een wereldwijde hit, met nummer 1-posities in het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten. ":
