De officiële definitie ervan is "de retrospectieve naamgeving voor het prototype rockmuziek dat voorafging aan de punk, tussen de jaren 60 en 70, en dat van grote invloed was op de esthetiek en het ontstaan van dit genre." Waarvan akte. Zo af en toe wordt in dit topic een uitstapje naar dat genre gemaakt.
En wie valt nou precies in het pulletje? Juist The Velvet Underground. Dit was nou een groep die zijn tijd mijlenver vooruit was. Wat zij in 1967 deden, grenst aan het ongelofelijke. Zelfs in 2020 klinkt deze muziek nog altijd modern. Het navolgende nummer zou zomaar 20 of 30 jaar later gemaakt kunnen zijn.
