The Jam wordt vooral gezien als de band, die in de tweede helft van de jaren '70 aanvoerder was van de zogenaamde Mod Revival. Mod? Wat is dat? Mod is een jeugdcultuur, die opkwam eind jaren '50 en zijn hoogtepunt beleefde rond 1965. Mod is een afkorting van modernist. Altijd piekfijn gekleed in maatpakken en petticoats (de vrouwen dan..), reden de mods rond op scooters door steden als Londen, Birmingham en Manchester. Bekende bands uit die tijd waren The Who, The Small Faces, The Spencer Davis Group en The Kinks. The Jam presenteerde zich net zo. Google maar eens op 'Paul Weller' en 'scooter'. Gelukkig viel de mod revival samen met de opkomst van de new wave. Daarom wordt The Jam ook als New Wave band geclassificeerd. Mag ik ze hier tenminste plaatsen.

The Eton Rifles komt in de top 50 terecht (49e) met een gemiddelde van 8,631. The Jam is opvallend populair in dit forum. Ook Going Underground staat hoog in het klassement. Ze zullen in de toekomst nog wel vaker voorbij gaan komen.

Ik ben geen grote liefhebber van covers. Meestal voegen ze niets toe aan het origineel. Alleen wanneer een song drastisch wordt omgevormd tot iets nieuws en origineels, kan ik er (soms) van genieten. In uitzonderlijke gevallen, is de cover zelfs beter dan het origineel. Zoals bij mijn keuze van vandaag. In mijn speurtocht naar geschikte tracks voor dit topic, stuitte ik op een liedje van de onbekende Australische punkband Radio Birdman. Wat zij doen met het origineel van Iggy Pop and The Stooges is geweldig.
Zij maken van een middelmatige proto-punk song een heerlijk vuige rocker. Vooral het gitaarwerk swingt de pan uit. Benieuwd naar jullie oordeel.
