“Hallo! Daar zijn we weer!” De royalties van deze editie. Alweer het vierde album van The Veils in de Top 20. Houdt het dan nooit op?
Dit is het debuutalbum van de band en ik vind het grotendeels geen zak aan. Neem nou 'The Leavers Dance': dat is mij veel te veel Coldplay-achtig, pathetisch gedram. Geen wonder dat het zo'n popiejopiedeuntje is. En als het wat steviger is, 'The Tide That Left and Never Came Back', dan zit er nog een glazuurlaag aan aanstelleritis overheen. Gelukkig klinkt me niet alles als weke poep in de oren en is een lichtpuntje als 'More Heat Than Light' al beter, héél veel beter te bekoren. Maar de nasale, snijdende stem van Finn vind ik hier redelijk vervelend. Hoe curieus dat dit album het hoogste gemiddelde heeft, terwijl ik de andere albums kilo's beter te pruimen vind. Nouja, doen jullie er maar jullie voordeel mee, ik zeg tegen dit album: tot in de pruimentijd!

Ik hoop dat je op tijd bij de wc was, want dit klinkt niet al te best! en dan is nummer 1 waarschijnlijk niet veel beter?

Chills zijn op. Komt er nog meer Veils?

Zou maar zo kunnen. Tweede album?

Misschien moeten we de dokter dan uit z'n lijden verlossen en die zelf even plaatsen.

Dan kan alleen maar The Dead C op 1 staan toch?

Daar is-tie dan, de winnaar! En verdomd, als het niet waar is: het is niet The Dead C, maar alweer die vermaledijde The Veils.
Het was spannend, heel spannend welk album van The Veils het zou winnen. Het debuutalbum had meer nummer 1-posities vergaard, maar deze opvolger had één stem meer. En bijna allemaal hoge noteringen. Tot en met de laatste inzending scheelde het maar een paar punten.

Ik was zelf niet zo bekend met deze band en besloot dus maar eens wat van jullie juichbandje te luisteren. Logischerwijs begon ik met het debuutalbum en mijn mening hierover zie je hierboven. Eigenlijk had ik daarna al genoeg van deze band. Toch besloot ik nog even kort dit album kort checken, want deze kwam dus ook al zo vaak voorbij in de lijstje. Openingsnummer 'Not Yet' sloeg hier in als een bom. WTF, is dit dezelfde band? Ik luisterde verder. Niet alles kon me evengoed bekoren, maar een aantal nummers bezorgde me duimendik kippenvel óp mijn lijf en een zinderend gevoel dóór mijn lijf. Wat zijn nummers als 'Jesus for the Jugular', 'Pan' en vooral het ontzagwekkende titelnummer briljant intens. Ik katapulteerde het album ook hoog in mijn lijst, zodat uiteindelijk het verschil met de nummer 2 toch wat groter is geworden. Want ook zonder mijn punten zou dit album hebben gewonnen, maar dan met een erg klein verschil.

Kortom: hun oeuvre begon met voor mij een valse start, maar ik ben blij dat jullie me aan deze winnaar (en hun overige albums) hebben geholpen. Ik noteer Doornroosje voor volgend jaar in mijn agenda.

Wat een prachtig lijstje! En wat een fantastische presentatie. Daar smul ik wel van. Dank daarvoor EvilDr.

Dank jullie allen voor de deelname! De uitslag liet wat langer op zich wachten en ondanks de metaal- en vage shitarmoede in de lijst, ben ik toch in mijn nopjes waarmee wij onze Top 20 hebben gevuld.

De mainstreamaward gaat glansrijk naar Casartelli. Al was zijn lijstje bescheiden, tien titels, het waren bijna allemaal Top 20-noteringen. Op eentje na: die was dan ook meteen uniek en door niemand anders vermeld. Van degenen die een volledige lijst inleverden, was aERodynamIC hiervan met de meest mainstreame smaak (12 hits om 6 unieke titels)

De obscuriteitsbokaal: eindelijk! Ik heb ook eens gewonnen. Niemand die ook maar in de buurt kwam van mijn eigengereide lijstje. Ik had slechts één match (nota bene de winnaar) en dertien unieke titels. Alhoewel, niet in de buurt? Wendyvortex (2 om 10) en zaaf (3 om 13) hadden ook weinig vreugde en herkenning tijdens de uitslag van de Top 20.

Sluit ik af met nog een album uit de vergeten sixties, opdat we niet vergeten dat er ook leuke ouwe meuk in Nieuw-Zeeland werd gemaakt.

In 1982 kwam Martyn Bull als drummer bij de band. Hij kreeg gezondheidsproblemen maar bleef lid van de band. Helaas overleed hij in 1983 waarna de band stopte er tijdelijk mee. Martin Phillipps had een leren jas als aandenken gekregen van Bull en daar gaat dit nummer over.

Weinig animo voor vuige poep, weirde shit en brute herrie: liefhebbers als Johnny Marr en Apollo worden in dit spelletje met node gemist om Lying Mouth en ondergetekende te ruggensteunen. In de wat minder onorthodoxe klanken vond ik ook wel het nodige van mijn gading, maar het is toch vooral metal wat in Nieuw-Zeeland de boventoon in mijn lijst voert. Al moet gezegd: heel veel échte (nieuwe) klappers heb ik niet ontdekt. Wel een heel aantal sterke, bovengemiddelde platen, maar enkel mijn nummers #2 en #3 zijn geweld(dad)ige eerste kennismakingen. Oja, en natuurlijk de gothic/Cave-achtige tracks van The Veils: fantastisch. Wellicht toch geen slechte score, al met al.

Ik heb mijn best gedaan, jij stuurt een lijstje zonder Dead C Verder valt het mij op dat je weinig bekend lijkt met oldskool NZ noise. Die is er wel degelijk, ken je het label Corpus Hermeticum?

Ik vond The Dead C uiteindelijk toch een tikje tegenvallen, als in: ik had er op basis van de vier platen die ik heb geluisterd iets meer van verwacht. De band strandde vlak onder mijn bubbellijstje. Maar ik ben zeker NIET bekend met dat label, dus als je specifieke tips van dat label hebt: graag! Want jouw tip van OMIT smaakte me ook bijzonder goed.

Ik weet, ik weet. Dacht wel ff dat Ulcerate op 1 stond in de eindlijst maar dat is gewoon je eigen top 20 Ging wel baas zijn tho
