GODVERDOMME! Wat moeilijk allemaal. Megadeth en Metallica vallen buiten de boot, de echte thrash-bands hebben een fantastisch jaar. Ook geen punten voor prima album van Maiden. En ik schaam me als ik zeg dat ik de huidige nummer 1 niet eens ken (spaar me aub). Bands die ik niet ongenoemd wil laten: Carcass, Voivod, Rigor Mortis, Death, King Diamond en natuurlijk Pestilence.

Een zeer divers jaar zie ik al, drie man gehad en al 11 albums. Met Nine Inch Nails en Godflesh begint de Industrial scene goed los te komen. Verder een sterke plaat van W.A.S.P. en een goed vervolg op HotMK van Savatage. Laatste puntjes gaan naar Bolt Thrower die death metal met een heerlijke groove weten neer te zetten. Annihilator, Blind Guardian en Obituary komen op het erelijstje voor dit jaar!

Maar echt grootse albums zijn het niet. Wel bevatten de albums van Savatage (titelnummer) en Dream Theaters debuut (The Ytse Jam en The Killing Hand) enkele grootse nummers. Save Yourself van de Michael Schenker Group, voor de gelegenheid omgedoopt in McAuley-Schenker Group, is een album dat ik vroeger behoorlijk waardeerde, toen mijn tandglazuur nog wat sterker was.

Ach, ze draaiden het op Monsters Of Rock en later Headbanger's Ball. Net als de hitjes van Cinderella en Giant overigens.

Volgens de site wel, dus laat ik dat maar volgen. Toegegeven dat de latere albums meer de industrial metal kant uitgaan ten opzichte van het debuut, maar ook hier zit wel een dosis industrial riffjes in waardoor het als metal beschouwd wordt.

Tegen mijn verwachting in was 1989 toch een sterk jaar, waarin Sabbat met Dreamweaver alle andere bands het nakijken geeft. Ook Black Sabbath komt (eindelijk weer) met een sterk album. Bij zowel Headless Cross als Dreamweaver heb ik op MuMe 4.5* staan, de andere drie albums in mijn lijstje hier staan op 4.0*.

Misschien wel een idee om in de toekomst de bandnaam ook in de lijst te vermelden, dat maakt het toch wel iets duidelijker (zeker voor de toekomstige lijsten en opgesplitste metal-genres lijkt me dat handig)

Ik snap wat je bedoelt maar de mening van diegene die alles bij elkaar optelt, van elkaar aftrekt, door elkaar deelt en aan elkaar knupt is voor mij doorslaggevend.

Train your brains door zelf nog eens te raden welk band nu welk album maakte. Zo hep elluk nadeel weer zijn voordeel.

Alweer een erg goed jaar, in het bijzonder met goede debuutplaten. Op thrash gebied waren er strakke releases van Exodus, Nuclear Assault, Sepultura en natuurlijk het debuut van Annihilator. Dream Theater's debuut was destijds een openbaring en heeft nog steeds zijn momenten. Dat geldt ook voor Nine Inch Nails. Nog beter waren Fates Warning en vooral het machtige Gutter Ballet van Savatage!
