Zo dan! Ik denk niet dat veel mensen dat op voorhand goed voorspeld zouden hebben. Voor mij een 18e plek. Fijn album waarvan ik de inhoud nog eens wat dieper op me in moet laten werken.

Hoog, steeds op plek 2, 3 of 4 en in strijd met Tears For Fears en R.E.M. Toen The The wat stilviel op het laatst greep Tom zijn kans. Beduidend minder genoemd maar veel mokerhoge scores.

Swordfishtrombones geeft een scherpe omwenteling in Waits' muzikale koers. Waar hij voordien piano of gitaar speelde, werd hij nu geleid naar minder gebruikelijke instrumenten onder zijn motto:
"Your hands are like dogs, going to the same places they've been. You have to be careful when playing is no longer in the mind but in the fingers, going to happy places. You have to break them of their habits or you don't explore; you only play what is confident and pleasing. I'm learning to break those habits by playing instruments I know absolutely nothing about, like a bassoon or a waterphone."

Vanaf dit album was het instrumentarium dus veel diverser, maar ook zijn songwriting verschoof - van traditioneel naar stijlen die in popmuziek grotendeels genegeerd werden als cabaretesque, rumba, Kurt Weill-achtig theater, Europese volksmuziek, vroege country en dito blues. Behalve in de output van Dr. John en Captain Beefheart waren er weinig precedenten in populaire muziek.

Nou, aangezien de top 10 niet helemaal naar mijn believen is en mijn nummer 1 het net niet heeft gered, is het natuurlijk niet meer dan terecht dat mijn nummer 2 het hier doet.

Weer een 3,5 die mijn lijst niet haalde. Dus al met al toch een sterke top 10 tot 2.

Het goede nieuws zal nu wel ophouden vrees ik met de nummer 1 op komst...
