Hoe staat het met mijn smaak / wansmaak t.o.v. de anderen hier?
Ik heb gekeken naar onze laatste gezamenlijke top 20. Daar staan naar mijn mening totaal geen slechte nummers in. Elk nummer van deze top 20 heeft mijn persoonlijke top 100 gehaald.

Nr. 2 en 24 in deze index is Bitter Ind, een niet zo bekende groep maar ze zouden indirect de basis gaan vormen voor The Allman brothers band.
Producer van deze single is JLD. Dat staat voor James Luther Dickinson, hij produceerde tal van plaatopnames van beroemde popgroepen en -artiesten.
Zijn memoires vormen een geweldige bron voor de muziekliefhebber. Vol met anekdotes over o.a. The Rolling Stones, Big star, Aretha Franklin en Sam & Dave.
Boek bij deze index zijn deze memoires: Jim Dickinson: I'm Just Dead, I'm Not Gone.

We zijn precies op de helft van 1967 wat de indexen betreft.
Liggen we op schema? Nee.
Net als met veel popmuziekgroepen liggen de ambities hoger dan de behaalde resultaten.

Dat vind ik ook het beste nummer van 1967 (en misschien aller tijden). Jammer dat het niet op single werd uitgebracht maar het is wel een enorme evergreen geworden (ook op MuMe).
Dat maakt nog eens duidelijk dat hits en evergreens twee verschillende dingen zijn. Zelfs al in 1967.

Helemaal mee eens, Luc.
"A day in the life" was geen hit maar is een echte evergreen. In jouw wekelijkse beschouwingen komen we veel voorbeelden tegen van kleine hits en grote evergreens en omgekeerd.
Ook in de Amerikaanse hitparade zijn er veel voorbeelden. Een mooi voorbeeld is Eddie Cochran met C'mon everybody uit 1958. Een kleine hit (slechts nr. 35) maar een enorme evergreen aldaar.
Why van Frankie Avalon was een enorme hit (nr. 1) in 1959 maar is inmiddels nagenoeg vergeten.
Ik kom hier nog op terug in één van de toekomstige 1967-indexen.

Een andere belangrijke bron is de tipparade. Deze start op 15 juli 1967 dus het lijkt mij niet onlogisch om deze 15e index van juli 1967 daaraan te wijden.
Ik neem alle nummers uit de tipparade op in de indexen dus als ik weer eens een foutje maak dan hoor ik het graag.
De man die hoogst zelden fouten maakt is LucM. Nr. 28 uit deze index kwam direct de top 40 binnen. Deze is destijds helemaal niet door hem genoemd dus daar ontbreekt nog een recensie van Luc over.

Maar hoe zit het met de tipparade voor 15 juli 1967 en dan vooral de singles die de top 40 niet haalden?
Stichting Norderney houdt deze keurig bij met terugwerkende kracht zoals dat zo mooi heet. Daarom deze keer geen boek maar de bron van internet onder de naam Prehistorische Tipparade waar al deze singles zijn opgeslagen. Uiteraard vanaf de allereerste top 40 van 2 januari 1965. Het zijn inmiddels 812 singletjes. Kortom, veel leesplezier.

Wat valt hierover te zeggen? Met zo weinig deelnemers zullen wat persoonlijke favorieten makkelijker de lijst halen. Hoogste binnenkomer Autumn Almanac wint 3 puntjes. Elke keer dat ik dat nummer gehoord heb zit het op z'n minst nog 2 dagen in mijn hoofd. Knap, maar voor mij eigenlijk niet zo prettig.
Dan nog even wat aandacht voor By the Time I Got To Phoenix. Ik moet daar erg aan wennen. Net als bij Gene Pitney ben ik eerst bekend met de cover door Nick Cave. Daar zit zo veel meer power en drama in.

Vorige week nog gezakt van 82 naar 109. Deze week gestegen van 109 naar 40.
Herb Alpert - A banda.
Ook ik vind het een vrij platte versie. Ik mis de zoete melancholie, de poetische teksten, de ijle melodielijnen en de meer geraffineerde ritmiek van het origineel. Maar toch zitten er ook in deze versie genoeg verrassingen (vooral in de timing) en voor mijn gevoel is dit de meest gedraaide plaat op de Hilversumse radio van eind 1967 en begin 1968. Kortom jeugdsentiment. Vanaf 1969 heb ik hem nauwelijks nog gehoord behalve nog één keer halverwege de jaren 70 bij Barend Barendse.
Daarom deze week 69 plaatsen gestegen.
En volgende week is die weer verdwenen. Dan zakt die meer dan 100 plaatsen net als op 21 oktober 1967 in de Amerikaanse hitparade,
In Nederland bleef Herb tot aan carnaval hangen totdat die werd verdreven door de "echte" Carnavals versie van Han Grevelt. En die versie is echt totaal kansloos bij mij.
Verder nog negen andere binnenkomers.

Soms is het leuk om ons zustertopic "1973" te lezen. Dan lees je dingen van meer dan 6 jaar geleden.......
Dit jaar bleek dat Waterloo Sunset en A Whiter Shade Of Pale het niet eens 17 weken vol konden houden in heicro's top 40.

Hoe dat zou komen?
Ik vermoed omdat hij in de afgelopen 7 jaar heel veel geweldige vondsten heeft gedaan. Dat begon al 6 jaar geleden.
Volgende week komt die ook bij mij binnen. Mother No-head.

Er was een tijd dat ik Groep 1850 door elkaar haalde met NV Groep 65.
Eigenlijk is dat een doodzonde want Groep 1850 kwam uit Den Haag en NV Groep 65 uit Amsterdam.
Toch waren de overeenkomsten groot. Beiden hadden veel met seks, drugs en religie.

Van NV Groep 65 komt "Pipe and you like it". Een eerbetoon aan geestverruimende middelen. Maar ook de dubbelzinnigheid zal niet toevallig zijn.
Groep 1850 heette eerder the Klits. Een verwijzing naar bepaalde vrouwelijke anatomie en ik hoef dat verder hopelijk hier niet uit te leggen.

In NV Groep 65 zat zanger Warner Landkroon. Hij had lang haar, een weelderige baard en liep op sandalen. Ze noemde hem Jezus. Maar Jezus slikte, snoof en spoot alles wat God verboden had.

En nu schijnt hij clean te zijn. Hoe?
Dankzij Jezus. Hij heeft Jezus gevonden, of liever gezegd: Jezus heeft hem gevonden. En nu is hij in Jezus. "Within you, without you" heette dat in 1967.
Hij voelde zich alsof hij uit de dood was opgestaan, die Warner. Dat was in 1999.. Hij schijnt ook nu nog voort te leven maar ik kan daar op internet niks over teruglezen.

In Groep 1850 zat zanger Peter Sjardin. Die was jarenlang niemand. Niemand omdat een crimineel zijn identiteit had afgenomen. Hij was daarom heel veel jaren onzichtbaar. Net als Mother no-head was hij zo goed als dead, verdwenen. En op mother no-head werd Peter ook al "stiekem" vervangen door Hans van Hemert, dus het was hem eigenlijk al eerder overkomen. Hij heeft nog jaren het nummer live moeten brengen alsof hij Hans was.
En mijnheer niemand werd gelukkig ooit weer Peter.
Die crimineel werd dood gevonden diep in een ravijn. A bad trip to mother earth zoals dat heet. Helaas stierf de echte Peter ook korte tijd later.

Laat ik maar vast verklappen waar ik naar toe wil. Mother No-head is eigenlijk Vader Jacob. En heicro schijnt in het echt Jacques te heten. En Vader Jacob is uiteraard Frere Jacques. Dat betekent broeder Jacques dus.
Ja, het moment is daar. Want Vader Jacob, de verdwenen vader van dit topic, is niet alleen vader. Ik heb uit betrouwbare bron vernomen dat hij donderdag (wederom) opa is geworden.

Gefeliciteerd Jacques.

Nee, ik ben nog niet klaar.

Zes jaar geleden kreeg de single uit "Ja zuster, nee zuster" "de ouwe Jacob" er flink van langs!
Deze single werd gezongen door de meest populaire opa uit 1967 (in heel Europa was er niemand zoals hij). Opa werd gespeeld door Leen Jongewaard.
Dat opa klinkt als oma past goed bij 1967. Al die kerels leken soms net wijven, of ze nou een snor hadden of niet. Opa liep in de serie uiterst moeizaam met de benen wijd en was inderdaad niet vormvast qua stem. Ouderdom komt met gebreken.
Het liedje "de ouwe Jacob" komt uit de elfde aflevering “Fuchsia’s en haan” uitgezonden op 3 oktober 1967.

Belangrijk is dat deze aflevering een grote knipoog geeft naar het album “Sgt. pepper Lonely Heart Club Band” van The Beatles. De haan die in deze aflevering meespeelt past uitstekend bij “Good Morning good Morning” en er moet ook nog een deur worden gerepareerd “Filling the cracks that ran through the door”.

In deze aflevering zit ook “Wil u een stekkie?”. De openingstune klinkt bijna hetzelfde al “When I’m 64”.
maar Bannink maakt er een leuke variatie op.
Het stekkie van de Fuchsia verwijst naar het drugsgebruik (stickie) van o.a. “A day in a Life”. Fuck fuck fuchsia doet denken aan de vrije liefde die we eveneens ontdekken in Lovely Rita”.
De aflevering begint psychedelisch, het hele huis en balkon is bezaaid met fuchsia's, het gevolg van het "stekkiegebruik" wat uit de hand gelopen is. Het doet denken aan de overdadige bloemenpracht van “Lucy in the sky with diamonds”.
Men besluit daarom ook om al die Fuchsia's weg te gaan geven.

Het is 1967, het jaar van de flower power.

Bij “de ouwe Jacob” denken we uiteraard het meest aan “She’s leaving home”. Opvallend is dat het ook hier een dochter betreft die de vrijheid opzoekt. Die ene chauffeur geeft net als "a man from the motortrade" de anonimiteit weer van de "nieuwe liefde" met een zekere mobiliteit.
De traditioneel religieuze insteek met mannenkoortje refereert aan “Within you Without you”. Uiteraard hoort daar conform de Nederlandse religieuze traditie een kerkorgel bij. De mannen zijn al 50 jaar bij elkaar en vieren een jubileum (it was 20 years ago today) in dit geval 50 jaar (toepasselijker hier) en deze vrienden zingen duidelijk “out of tune”, een referentie naar “With a little help from my friend”. Zo zingen de heren dan weer te laag of te hoog, dan weer soms net te snel of te langzaam en zijn zelfs af en toe de tekst kwijt (let op: dochter keert weer, het achtergrondkoor zing dochter komt weer).

Na het zingen vraagt opa deze vrienden daarom ook op te sodemieteren, vort roept hij. Terecht, van je vrienden moet je het maar hebben.
Harry Bannink stond bekend om zijn absolute gehoor voor noten. In de boeken Niemand zo aardig als hij een referentie naar die ouwe opa en Harry Bannink, toonzetter kan je teruglezen dat dat veelal tot veel dispuut leidde bij Harry Bannink met zijn zangers. Maar Harry bleef altijd aardig. Soms zei Harry: 'Die noot zat er een beetje tegenaan.' Of: 'Die noot was hoger dan ik gedacht had dat je kon.' Of het allerergste: 'Een hele mooi noot, die je daar zong. Ik heb hem zelf niet gecomponeerd, maar dat doet er nu niet zo veel toe.
En daarom is dit zo'n lekker nummer. Ze nemen de componist hier goed te grazen.

Annie MG Schmidt gooit er ook nog veel verwijzingen in naar andere liedjes. "Zij komt nooit weerom" klinkt oubollig maar dat is volgens mij bewust gekozen want terug had ook gekund en dit is een fraaie verwijzing naar "Berend Botje" (Nooit kwam Berend Botje weerom). De clichés van de oude foto van Jerry Bey en de zwaluw van Max en Betsy Anders komen ook voorbij.

Het couplet is een klaagzang en het refrein een wals. De wals verwijst naar het Doobie doo van lichtekooierige dames zoals Betty Boop en Marilyn Monroe (I wanna be loved by you). Doobie staat uiteraard in de jaren 60 synoniem voor een goede joint. Seks en drugs ook hier weer dus.

De klaagzang voldoet aan de aloude koortraditie van het kerkelijke lied, de psalm. Er wordt een inleiding bespeeld en dan een korte stilte en dan inzetten maar. Het Urker Mannerkoor van Mother no-head ontbreekt maar deze keuze neigt zeker naar psychedelica.

Maar er is geen psalm die er echt op lijkt. Het orgel speelt g-g-a-b-b.
En hier blijkt wederom de genialiteit van Bannink en de overeenkomst met Mother No-head.
Er wordt een variant gemaakt op "Vader Jacob". Speel maar na Justus18 op de blokfluit, dit keer mag het vals: g-a-b g-a-b.
Let ook op de dalende notenlijn vanaf "Zou zij nog komen" en vergelijk deze met "alle klokken luiden".
Bannink bedekt de melodie van "Vader Jacob" met allerlei afwijkende intervalletjes en onverwachte maat- en tempowisselingen.

Ik sloeg het nummer vroeger over omdat ik het zo intens zielig vond. Ik kon het niet verdragen. Die dochter die net te laat thuis kwam.

Maar is vader Jacob dood?
Nee natuurlijk niet. Ze zaten er al twee coupletten naast met die dochter die nooit "weerom" kwam. Ze kwam toch ook terug?

Het zou mij dan ook niets verbazen dat de dochter die terug komt hoogzwanger is en dat komt ze hem vertellen. Vader Jacob wordt opa Jacob! En die oude vader/opa Jacob beweegt inderdaad niet, die zit gewoon te pitten.

Wakker worden vader Jacob. Alle klokken luiden "Bim Bam Bom". Er valt wat te vieren!

Nogmaals gefeliciteerd heicro.

Nee, ik ben nog niet klaar.

Gelukkig (voor mij en mijn omgeving) ben ik niet meer in het bezit van een blokfluit. Ik heb wel snel een top 7 gemaakt van liedjes uit Ja Zuster, Nee zuster:

Een nieuwe nummer één. De overslaande stem op Wild Honey bevalt mij wel.
Ik moest bij het latere Neutral Milk Hotel en het album "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" altijd aan "Wild honey" denken. Ook zo'n heerlijke overslaande stem.
En de hoes van dat album toont een prachtige "Mother No head" op een boot. Anna Suzanna van vader Jacob kwam ook met een boot terug trouwens.
Picture yourself with a boat on a river. Het album van Neutral Milk Hotel staat veel hoger in de Musicmeter top 250 dan Sgt. Pepper.
Ach, wie kan er op tegen een hele zee met een two-headed boy?

The Clouds en Visions doet het erg goed op nr. 15.
Doet mij sterk denken aan de ouverture van de latere musical Jesus Chris Superstar. Tegen Jezus kan niemand op. Het werd zelfs de dood van John Lennon volgens one crazy head of a killerman. Het gaf de killer identiteit zo staat geschreven. Jezus heeft hem vergeven zo zegt hij zelf.

Tijd voor een cadeautje.
1967. Dat moeten bloemen zijn.
Fuchsia's?
Nee. Nee niet een stekkie voor dat stickie.

Black Roses.
Mijn hoogste stijger binnen de top 40. Op zeven. Nog niet tegengekomen en wat mij betreft volkomen ten onrechte.
Lekkere recht toe recht aan rock en roll. Intro doet mij erg denken aan het latere Echo & the Bunnymen en Back Of Love. Een mooie inkijk in het hoofd van Ian McCulloch.
En als je het niet genoeg vind voor het stickie. De psychedelische B-kant.
She's ready to be free.
Toepasselijk bij een kleindochter.

En als je het nog steeds niks vind?
Je moet een gegeven paard niet in het hoofd, meer specifiek, de bek kijken.
Want opa komt later nog terug en dan kijkt die naar de .... van het paard.
Goeie top 7 trouwens Justus18. Ouwe Jacob op 1. Maar waar staat "In een rijtuigie?

Een nieuwe Pink Floyd is een vertrouwd nummer en komt gelijk hoog binnen. Verder allemaal nummers die ik pas echt leer kennen, dus het was een week van veel ontdekkingen.

Zeer vermakelijk, al die 'overpeinzingen' en spitsvondigheden Marzipaintree. Je brengt wat sjeu aan dit topic dat helaas te lijden heeft aan leuke inbreng van sommige deelnemers.
