Ik dacht eerst even dat Justus in zijn top 40 39 nummers aangeleverd had als compensatie voor mijn 41 nummers.
Maar toen zag ik dat hij Mama's Heintje als spoiler eronder had gezet.
Blijkbaar is dit een guilty pleasure van hem.
Voor velen is dit een hele
Mijn oma die al begin jaren 80 overleden is, hield van Heintje. Het was voor haar beter geweest als we Heintje reeds vroeg hadden ontdaan van zijn testikels want toen hij de baard in de keel kreeg vond ze er niets meer aan.
Maar of dat goed gaat weet je nooit zeker. Tot 150 jaar geleden kwamen er nog castraatzangers voor. En niet iedereen bleef goed zingen na de behandeling. Sommigen kregen bovendien allerlei urologische problemen of werden onevenredig lang. En dan heb je qua muziekgebied nog kans op helemaal niks, zeker als je mama moet zingen.
En mij maakt het ook niet veel uit, Heintje voor of na zijn baard (in de keel).
Ik geloof dat ik Heintje met baard in de keel toch beter vind.
En daarom is het gelukkig dat Hein nog ballen heeft.
In ieder geval kunnen we nu lezen dat Heintje al op zijn viertiende seks had en daarna het met heel wat meisjes deed. Met als risico dat er heel wat mama's bij kwamen.
Dat risico blijkt een feit bij de allereerste zanger van Mamma in 1940: Beniamino Gigli. Die ging behoorlijk vreemd als we de verhalen mogen geloven en hield er naast zijn huwelijk minstens vier vrouwen op na die allemaal, evenals zijn eigen vrouw, dankzij hem mama werden.
Hij was de zanger van de muziek (klik) die behoorde bij de film Mamma (klik opnieuw). Een nazistisch / fascistisch product in een samenwerking tussen Duitsland en Italie van 1941.
De Duitse hoofdrolspeelster in die film, Carola Hohn, was in het echt getrouwd met Arved Crüger een Duitse majoor van de Luftwaffe die een jaar later in zijn bommenwerper werd neergeschoten. Carola werd vier maanden later mama van hun zoon.
En Beniamino Gigli was ook weer bevriend met Mussolini.
In die tijd stond Mamma ook nog symbool voor het Vaterland, die Heimat, la patria. Daar waar je thuis hoort. En uiteraard heel veel anderen niet.
Zou het daarom zijn dat Heintje vooral zo populair werd in Duitsland? Ik hoop oprecht van niet.
Het is net als met de castraatzangers. Succesvol worden, je weet nooit of en waarom het lukt.
Dat zijn de raadselen van de muziek.

Er werden namelijk maar liefst vijf singles tegelijkertijd uitgebracht:

Ik probeer al jaren het boek What's Big and Purple and Lives in the Ocean?: The Moby Grape Story te pakken te krijgen maar de release wordt steeds uitgesteld. Nu moet ik weer wachten tot april 2018. Een gevolg van misplannen? In ieder geval is mijn aanbeveling een boek dat nog uit moet komen.
Het onderwerp is interessant genoeg dus een miskoop zal het nooit zijn:

In januari waren een paar vrienden bij mij te gast en lieten we elkaar om beurten een nummer uit 1967 aan elkaar horen. Gaandeweg viel het ons op hoeveel nummers in een (vrijwel altijd onnodig) fade out eindigde. Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Titch laten goed horen dat dat helemaal niet nodig is, maar omdat het 1967 is voegen ze aan Zabadak een coda toe, zodat het nummer alsnog in een fade out eindigt.
Op diezelfde avond werden we getrakteerd op Het Padvinderslied. Ik ben wel benieuwd naar een recensie van LucM.
Intussen is Heintje mijn top 20 binnengekomen. Nu maar hopen dat ik geen ban krijg vanwege wansmaak.

Erma Franklin scoorde 25 jaar later in 1992 een top 40 hit met Piece of My Heart, maar komt bij mij in 1967 binnen. Zo staan er twee Franklin-zusjes in mijn lijst.
Dan de harde blues van Cream. Spoonful is toch wel heerlijk uitgevoerd, onmogelijk op stil te blijven zitten. Ik hoorde deze gisteravond voor het eerst en dat was wel even genieten.
Etta James' Tell Mama is een van haar grootste hits. Lekker uptempo soulnummer en de b-kant I'd Rather Go Blind is ook het vermelden waard.
Slim Harpo ken ik vooral via de Stones, die Shake Your Hips coverde op Exile on Main St., maar dit nummer is ook erg lekker. Lekker loom bluesplaatje.
Gisteren was ik overigens in Hoek van Holland om het Rock Art Museum te bezoeken. Beetje weggestopt op een industriegebied, maar eenmaal binnen is het een hele fijne plek om je even onder te dompelen in de Nederlandse muziekgeschiedenis van de jaren '60 en '70. Momenteel is er een Shocking Blue-tentoonstelling, dus veel over Robbie van Leeuwen Mariska Veres, etc. Verder staat er bv. ook de originele studio uit de beroemde Veronica-boot en tal van andere memorabilia. Gerund door enthousiaste mensen vol liefde voor muziek en mooie verhalen was het echt een heel leuke plek om even anderhalf uur door te brengen, dus mocht je eens in de buurt zijn... Ik moet toch wel erg wennen aan deze originele (eerst uitgebrachte) versie van een van de grootste soulklassiekers. Misschien groeit ie nog wat, maar heb het idee dat Marvin Gaye er toch wel wat bijzonders mee heeft gedaan.

Etta James komt er bij nog aan. Normaliter zou ik blind gaan voor haar single, maar ik vind dat die pas volgende week aan de beurt is.
Hoogste binnenkomer deze week zijn Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.
Wat een dichter is die Smokey. Hij pakt een uiterst triviaal onderwerp als de liefde tussen man en vrouw en doet daar iets buitengewoon bijzonders mee.
Hij benoemt in een aantal zinnen op poëtische wijze in welke gevallen hij zich niet aan iemand zal binden. Een primaire reactie van zijn kant zodat hij zijn hart niet zal breken.
Maar daar zitten zoveel laagjes in dat je enerzijds de diverse liedjes die er al over dit onderwerp zijn hoort voorbijkomen en anderzijds een uiterst ritmisch geheel van metaforen ziet passeren. Daarbij is de melodie ook nog sterk.
Hoewel je het gevoel hebt dat het nauwelijks fraaier verkondigd kan worden heeft de frase " Oh little girl" een licht #metoo-gehalte.
Maar in de context van het geheel met zoveel openlijk blootgestelde mannelijke kwetsbaarheid kan ik alleen maar in de ondubbelzinnige vorm stellen: "I second that emotion".

Ik was gebleven bij index 13. Wat smaak betreft. Laat ik maar meteen met de deur in huis vallen. Het beste nummer van 1967, mijn nr.1 van dat jaar, vind ik "A day in the life" van The Beatles. Als die direct met de LP op single was uitgebracht dan had die uiteraard in index 13 gestaan en wekenlang bij mij op één.
Maar we moeten het doen met nr. 1 uit index-13 The Recurring Love Habit.
En verder ook nog met nr. 63 Joe Brown, nr. 64 The young idea, nr. 61 Kenny Ball And His Jazzmen en nr. 47 David and Jonathan. Uiteraard vind ik elke originele uitvoering van Sgt. Pepper's Lonely heart club band vele malen beter maar ik respecteer bij voorbaat elke andere mening. Maar er komt nog wel een heel aardige cover aan in 1968 van Joe "Cover" Cocker.
Eigenlijk wil ik Sgt. Pepper als geheel op nr. 1 laten eindigen. Want eerder dit jaar heb ik het volgende geschreven:

Het album "Sgt. Pepper" haalt op musicmeter nergens een eerste plaats in de diverse toplijsten. Wat 1967 betreft worden ze verslagen door the Doors.
Dat komt o.a. door een grote groep muziekliefhebbers die het album 2 punten of lager geeft. Je bent geneigd om deze mensen te betichten van wansmaak maar het is ook opvallend dat het heel veel stemmen van lang geleden zijn. Van mensen die inmiddels op Musicmeter zijn verdwenen.
En wat is wansmaak? Is elke afgedwaalde vorm van mijn smaak wansmaak? Dan is mijn adoratie voor Sgt. Pepper voor de laagstemmers wansmaak.
Wat voor de één wansmaak is, is voor de ander hogere kunst.
Of is de afwijking op de gemiddelde smaak van een groep wansmaak? Dan wordt wansmaak democratisch bepaalt.
Uiteraard is muziek die geheel uit de maat is, of ter verering van foute dictators, of een ode aan seks met jonge kinderen voor mij zeker wansmaak.
Maar het kan heel goed zijn dat ze binnen bepaalde culturen volledig acceptabel zijn. Het heeft te maken met of iets binnen of buiten bepaalde grenzen valt. En die grenzen kunnen verschuiven waardoor wansmaken verschillen.
