Fijn!

Geweldig nummer. Kan me nog wel herinneren dat ik Out of Time cadeau kreeg en blij verrast was (want de singles hadden me destijds niet veel gedaan) door zoveel nummers, waaronder deze. Prachtig. Wat een band toch hee.

Prachtig nummer inderdaad, een van de besten van Out of Time!
Ze schreven dit nummer op de Green-Tour en ik vind het ook een echte Green-sound hebben, het zou er perfect op gepast hebben.

Ik ben blij met deze ontvangst zeker ook omdat Out Of Time of tenminste enkele nummers soms flink afgeserveerd worden

Ik denk wel dat klopt wat Herman zegt, dat de singles (op LMR na) niet echt een goed beeld geven van het album, hoe leuk ze ook zijn.
De andere zeven songs kunnen zich zeker meten met Green of Automatic for the People.

Je hebt gelijk..de andere nummers tesamen geven het juiste Out of Time gevoel weer, singles wel goed en leuk id

12. The One I Love (Johan tesamen met Luigi, 18)



De grote doorbraakhit vinden we terug op nummer 12. R.E.M. timmerde al een aantal jaren aan de weg in de VS en werd met elke plaat een beetje populairder. Maar met The One I Love werd in de VS echt de sprong gemaakt naar de miljoenenverkoop en de grotere podia, iets wat in Europa nog wel even zou duren. Het is een a-typisch lied voor R.E.M., niet zozeer muzikaal (het past helemaal bij de sound van Document) als wel tekstueel. Het enige lied van ze met Love in de titel, en daarnaast een voor hun doen vrij cynisch lied, met vooral de frase 'a simple prop to occupy my time' als opvallende dissonant. Dat vond Michael ook 'vrij hard' gaf hij al snel toe, en de band had zelf ook mixed feelings over deze hit, zozeer zelfs dat toen ze Pinkpop headlineden in 1989 dit nummer (tot dan hun enige hitje in Nederland) niet eens gespeeld werd (net als op veel van de Green-dates).
Toch is het een prachtig nummer. Een dijk van een song, met die geweldige massive drum-sound, de heerlijke gitaar en het cathartische 'Fire!' om lekker mee te schreeuwen. En daarmee past het ook perfect op 'vuuralbum' Document, met zijn Fireplace en firehouse.
Nooit geweten trouwens wat Mike zong in de Fire-gedeelten, maar als ik de lyricsites moet geloven is het 'she's comin' down on her own, now'. Nog maar eens goed luisteren

Net niet in de top 10... hmm, ik gok op E-bow the letter, dan hebben we die ook gehad, want die vind ik het minst van wat nog komt (als ik juist aan het gokken ben).

Het is wel heel tof dat jullie Chance (dub) als Automatic-track staan hebben, maar daar staat die toch echt niet op, tenzij jullie een echt heel speciale japanse editie hebben Het alternatief is dat het gewoon niet in de top 200 staat, maar dat lijkt me nog onwaarschijnlijker...

Drive staat er net buiten, want rijden doe je........

11. Drive (Luigi 16, Johan 19)




De ongelukkige 11e plek is voor Drive, opener en leadsingle van Automatic For The People, van zichzelf wel top 10 waardig. Etta heeft gewonnen en mag een ritje maken met Driver 8 Michael Stipe .
Toevalligerwijs haalde het ook de 11e plek in de UK singleslijst, in Amerika deed ie t nog wat minder goed. Hieronder kun je wat lezen over de inspiratie van de song, ik zal wat meer ingaan op de song zelf.

Ik heb R.E.M. altijd wel als een avontuurlijke en reislustige band gezien en zeker niet stationair, vandaar dat ze vaak verschillende vormen van reizen aanhaalden in hun muziek, muzikaal verbeeld in de muziek, maar ook in hun lyrics...constantly moving, letterlijk en figuurlijk .

We beginnen dit album en nummer met een 1,2,1,2,3,4 en mooi helder baswerk en janglegitaarwerk, een diep geluid...constant in een soort loop. Michael valt al snel binnen en klinkt een beetje "morose". De sfeer is gezet, een harmonica zet vervolgens in en de drums van Bill vallen als harde, maar langzame druppels neer. Opvallend ook wel dat er toch veel stilte in het nummer lijkt te zitten, ook al is het geen seconde stil. Halverwege de song doen de vederlichte strijkers hun intrede en een heerlijk jankende electrische gitaar, zorgend voor nog meer dramatiek in de song en wordt er naar een hoogtepunt gewerkt..ik vind het een geweldige, duistere sfeer, vooral toen ik nog wat jonger was . Op het eind lijken we te eindigen waar we begonnen en wordt het weer kleiner en minimalistischer met nog een paar stuiptrekkingen tot het langzaam maar zeker wegsterft in de nachtelijke desolaatheid van het bestaan, met een vleugje melancholische lichtheid van de harmonica.

Ook de lyrics zijn obscuur en passend bij deze muzikale omlijsting, een perfecte cohesie, een beetje doelloos rondwaren voor de jeugd.."Nobody tells you what to do". "Maybe You're Crazy In The Head". Prachtig, prima het mag allemaal..helemaal in de beetje Psycho-sfeer van dit liedje, zoals ik het maar noem .

The title itself is derived from Stipe and R.E.M.'s support for what would eventually become the "Motor Voter Bill" and the lyric "Hey, kids, rock 'n' roll" is an homage to the song "Stop It" by fellow Athens, Georgia groupPylon; Stipe has also said the song is an "obvious homage to 'Rock On' by David Essex," which features a similar line.

"The arrangement of 'Drive' was, in part, inspired by Queen," reported Scott Litt. "Peteand Mike are big Queen fans. Queen records, for all their bombast, sounded like each player had a personality."

Mike Mills has said "'Drive' is just telling kids to take charge of their own lives. Among other things."To Peter Buck: “It’s a subtle, political thing. Michael specifically mentions the term ‘bush-whacked’. But if you want to take it like ‘Stand’, that’s cool, too. You like to think that you can appreciate these songs on any level you want to. I have a lot of records I listen to when I’m just doing the dishes. Like Ride records. I really like Ride a lot. And I have no idea what the songs are about. And I really don’t care. I don’t even worry about it. Lyrics are the last thing I listen to, unless someone is hitting me over the head with it.”

Het hoeven trouwens niet perse die 10 nummers te zijn hoor, de kans is wel groot maar 100% zekerheid geef ik niet

Ja dat zou het wel moeten zijn of Johan en Luigi zijn opeens compleet de weg kwijt geraakt
Gelukkig zitten zij niet bij de KNVB
